Famous Guitar Players Who Started Late

- These are some famous guitar players who started late. There’s a misconception that learning guitar late in life is harder to do. It’s more difficult in the sense that life is busier and responsibilities are greater, so making time for it takes more intentionality. However, you will not somehow have a limitation on how well you will be able to play based solely on your age.

I have been told about some others but haven't checked them out. Glenn Tipton, Tom Scholz, Jesse Hughes, Tal Farlow, Greg Ginn, and Chris Rea.
i haven't noticed much videos you've done with your electric guitar, just wondering if you are going to do more and the differences you find with swapping from acoustic to electric guitar with everything you've learnt from justinguitar and paul davids. weirdly enough i find it kinda difficult to play electric guitar but acoustic i find great, i'm still only what you would class as a beginner, played a few years back and stop for a long while but have recently got back into it
@@keithykarnage I do plan to do some more with the electric. It is all I use at the moment and I was planning a video about transitioning from acoustic to electric.
@@MidlifeGuitar awesome to hear, and well done with all your progress so far.
I’m just learning at 63....
Chris Rea?
I was always envious of the guys who learned to play when we were at school, but never did anything about it. So I’ve started during lockdown. Hoping to join an Open Mike night in one of our local pubs within a few years. Just hit 63 so hoping to do so before my 65th!
good luck my friend! you got it
Hit 64 in March and picked up a guitar again after 30 years. I practice every day for about 2-3 hours and am gradually improving, but it’s always a challenge. Just when I get a song down to where it sounds like it’s supposed to, the whole process of learning some new fangled way to contort my fingers starts all over again! I’m hoping by my next birthday that me and my guitar (I named her Sady) are in tune and have a good thing going on. I hope that happens for you as well!
Best of luck and don't give up🤘
@@anekber4557 Keep doing your thing and don't give up dude!
It's good you put yourself a goal. Many young people that start learning guitar in their teenage years often dream about becoming a rock star, impressing girls ect. They want to be as cool as their idols so they dedicate time and effort to become that. Older people often don't have that so setting a goal really helps with motivation.
Never give up and you will get your deserved applaud in these open mike nights I am sure.
37 years old, started last year and am addicted! The first time I was able to sing while strumming was like Christmas, and got me hooked!
26 years old and fully obsessed. It’s coming pretty easy to me so ima keep going as far as I can! 🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽
I'm 26 and I'm practicing like crazy trying to catch up to those who started as a child. Someday I hope to be in a video like this lmao
Same 😔
26 yo .. i just started a couple of days ago .. and um going like forever!
Update: I paused for a year focusing on college then practiced like crazy again. I can now improvise solos over songs and do some simpler sweep picking and fast playing to my favorite solos. I am next going to learn triplets and more scales :)
@@StevenDoesStuff goodluck brother
I am 25 and i am thinking to start playing guitar again i used to play in high school but left because i was addicted to smoking , drinking and consuming lots of marijuana . Now i am trying to leave those stuffs and start playing again .
Me too... Too old to practice hard
Since I'm 19 years old and just found my love for guitars...the first entry really made me happy and gave me hooe because every guitarist I know started at 15 or 16
I feel this way but I’m 17 LOL I felt like I was too old but now I’m in love
Im 20 and felt the same ! But we are never too old right? Lets keep learning!
I'm 22 (23 in a few days) and I recently found a HUGE interest in learning the guitar.
My background in Piano might help me with music theory and logic, I believe.
@@usuallyclueless4477 If my experience is anything to go by, you'll find the guitar full of short-cuts to things that were quite difficult on the piano. Understanding the intervals makes them seem so darn logical!
Good luck on your journey.
Really? I started 16 and I thought I was too old lol
I began playing 1 year ago when I retired at 65. I was most inspired by another RUclipsr named Lauren Bateman. She said if you improve 1% a week, at the end of a year you will be 52% better than when you started. I believe she is right. If I can improve another 52% in the next year I might just turn out to be a halfway decent guitar player. Keep practicing. You will get better.
Started playing when I was 19, but not seriuosly because of University, so I quit at 23 and never touched a guitar for 20 years. Then I started seriuosly at 45, now I an 48 and I play 3 hours per day. During pandemic lockdown 6 or 8 hours per day. With exercise my fingers are much more quick and precise now then when I was 20 but playing only 20 minutes per day. Now I am attending a professional course in a real school not online, because it is fundamental that your teachers listen to you. Cheers and rock on.
I’m a teenager just started playing a few months ago and finally realized last week what I wanna do with it. I wanna rock!! Im not going to hope to become a great musician I am going to become a great musician. 🤘
If you do it for the sheer joy & not for the applause, you're half way there...
I played a little in school band as a kid. Then decided to buy a guitar to relax when I was 59. It’s fun and I practice about an hour per day.
I tried learning the acoustic guitar when I was 22. Gave up shortly after. Tried again when I was 25. Gave up again after a couple of months. I'm trying it again. Next month will be my 26th birthday. I want a Stevie Ray Vaughan Series Stratocaster and a silver and black Stratocaster. Fingers crossed for better luck this time! 🤞
Try to get a nice instructor. It’ll make it easier for you, you’ll know what to learn, when, how and why.
Orrr.... Find a band, musician whatever to emulate, practice the songs you love to perfection, 30 minutes a day. You will have fun and hit that plateau where you can comfortably play your instrument
Make sure to set goals like wanting to play a favorite song.
I wish you the best , but will tell you outright luck has nothing to do with it
, practice ,practice ,practice, make a point of picking up your guitar
Everyday , it's got to be your life, only way
Don't try to learn everything at once.
The biggest mental block for me has been my age since I’m almost 55, having started guitar 2 years ago. I hit a plateau about 6 months ago, and laid it down. Just started back a week ago. Thanks for the “never too old” reminder! Just what I needed to hear!🤟✌️
Hitting my first big flat period at age 26 here. I started when I was 24. My advice is buy a new pedal or take a lesson. I've been thinking about doing both :).
Its better than watching shitty TV (Covid updates)
Keep going!! Those plateaus happen just before big periods of growth from my experience (59 years old - been playing for 5 years). Remember - it's about having fun so have fun and keep going!!
@@mikedr1549 thanks brother!🤟
@@mikedr1549 This is very encouraging, I'm 53 and have been at it for a little over a year. 3 hours a day every day. Are you feeling like your gaining rough confidence on the instrument to play in a band setting?
I'm 49. Picked up the guitar last year. Still suck at it. Apparently, there is hope :)
There is! and there is no rush, enjoy the journey and celebrate the small wins. 👍
Great video, the production is smooth, you're funny and very informative. Thanks. And I agree, there might even be some benefits in learning to play the guitar at an older age.
@@BucksMusicJourney Thank you
I've just started at 19 and feel old as fuck to start but it still feels right
So for me haha, I'm 21, but I feel like I'm no longer in the time to learn something new. But the truth is that we are still very young.
I am 30 and just started learning Guitar. Better late than never.
So...you mean there’s hope for us old guys? 😂 Seriously, this is what I needed to hear ... I love that I found guitar .. it’s given me a new focus after a very tough year. Thank you again for your posts. 🤘🎸🙂
Without a doubt!😂 I just want everyone learning gutiar to get the same joy we do🤘
Yes age is just a number, I still run, ride my bike, between 50-100 miles a week, and I'm at about the same stage as you with the guitar, I'm 67 :)
Take care of your mind/body and AGE IS JUST A NUMBER.
Thanks for this. I'm so encouraged.
One thing I wish I could go back and change is playing instruments. I played guitar at age 10 and drums a bit at 13. Now I’m picking up the guitar again at age 20 and feel like I’m learning to use my hands again
Always an inspiration no matter, what your age. This decade is when I'm really going to go for it
Glad to hear it, go for it! 🤘
I started learning guitar about a month and a half ago. I've just found your channel and binged a couple of your videos, absolutely love it man keep up the good work 💪
Welcome aboard!
This is awesome I’m 40 and just started learning guitar during the COVID quarantine 9 months ago. I practice every day sometimes for 30 minutes sometimes for hours.
That's not enough 😂 you need to practice more
Good luck! I put in the same amount of hours and I'm 26 started November during covid. Looks like after the pandemic guitarists may be on the rise again
Practice with best plan Learn Ear training learn essentila music there and also songs and also composing and song writing you will improve alot.
I started 13 days ago at age 45.
I missed this one some how. Excellent video
That was very interesting and informative, thanks 👍
Your english is so easy to understand for me. Always I had been looking for a video talking about this cause I feel old at my 26 for learning guita, but I happy to see I am not the only one.
Gettings from México City and sorry for my bad english. I am learning yet too 😂🤘🏼
Another wonderful video! I've always wondered why isn't there a video like this out there! Really good job on this and its always a pleasure to see your presentation!
Also is it too soon to be requesting you to do a gear collection review? I reall like your seagull and fender strat!
Glad you liked it! I might do it at some point but not planning to just yet. Maybe when I get my next guitar 😉
Wow…. I just discovered your channel and it’s Electric!!! Because I’m 53 years old and always wanted to play Guitar ever since I saw Kiss.. Then Jimi Hendrix’s, The Beatles and Prince just Brought it home for me.. I noodled around as a kid and just got discouraged.. It wasn’t until Prince’s untimely passing that I went out and brought a Guitar and decided to give it another shot… I watched videos purchased programs and still hitting road blocks. Your channel opened up something new for me and I decided to put my all into it… Thank you for the Fantastic content… Inshallah and Peace.
Great video, very encouraging, like your channel! Keep up the good work, thanks mate!
Thanks, will do!
Great video!
Bought a used stratocaster last week. It's not my first guitar, but my stepdad destroyed my first guitar when I was a kid before I was able to learn much. I just turned 39. Excited to start learning!
great video. subbed
I started at 23. At 15 I tried it right handed but I couldn't press on the low e string properly. I was left handed and parents couldn't find me a lefty as a kid. I finally found a left handed guitar and about 7 months in and I'm 24 now and can play a few songs and it's coming together finally! I was a late bloomer as a person myself too lmao
It's very interesting! Also, I will have you take note that all of these legends are from long ago - nowadays it's much EASIER to learn guitar so we got that going for us, but it's also much TOUGHER to get known when you become good since there are so much more talented people. Not sure if this is still possible to make a living out of music while starting at 30+, but become good, or even great? Definitely!
Very true!
I'm only 19 i don't know much about music but, feel a special joy when listening or playing music, I would love to become a musician or something in the music industry too add my stuff but also it's a shot in the dark innit. So many people in the world with the same dream. Can work overcome talent? Eventhough with work comes talent.
This makes me realize I didn't start late. I started 2,5 years ago and I'm now 18y 6m so just when i turned 16. I feel really late because one of my very good friends started when he was just 13 years old, so a 3 year headstart, but I just have to practice harder to catch up to him!
My son started at 11 and he feels like is already too late and some people in his music class started at 6-7, already in teen band with crazy solos. This goes to show that even 11 the feeling is the same. Never too late , never to early.
@@Lifeafter40 exactly.. only thing you can do is practice every day. Jimi Hendrix started at 15!
i had a guitar as a little kid i couldn’t play it at all but guitar hero aerosmith and growing up on classic rock bc of my dad i wanted to be a rockstar and then i got older and i still had the interest as a teenager and now here i am 20 just bought myself a cheap guitar i can beat on to learn so it comes tomorrow and im like a kid on christmas
Luke I played guitar as a teenager not very well I've been playing guitar for 16 years now im 74 im on U tube I do jam nights in hotels in Sydney you have a lot to learn you can't rush it
Chuck Berry did NOT start playing when he was 29.. He recorded his first singles and albums at age 29.. he started well before that, but still kind of late.
He said that, did you even watch the video?
@@Donyourmom Did you?
Johnny Ramone got a Mosrite MK II guitar.. I got a Mosrite MK I guitar which is actually their top of the line guitar, and the pickups are way hotter on mine, like 13k! Sounds way better than the Ramones tone. This thing BLASTS, monster huge tone, like no other guitar I ever played. And it is a single coil vintage 1965 MK I model. Too bad everyone just used it for clean country and surf.. I love those styles, but it has so much more potential to rock out!
Everyone here in the comments seem to be pushing 50 years old. And im over here worrying about it at 26 😅 I guess I've got a 25 year head start and that gives me hope
I'm 58 & have spent my whole life avoiding learning the guitar. Seriously! I figured, the last thing the world needs is another mediocre guitarist...
I've always played music though. Learned trumpet for a while when I was a kid (until an accident wrecked my embouchure), played bass when I was a teenager (until I cut the tip of one of my fingers on my left hand), picked up a harmonica in my 20s & have played one ever since (occasionally for money).
Then, when I was about 45, I started learning the clarinet so I could learn to read music, which led to me learning the flute & sax as well, which led to me starting a Diploma of Music (Saxophone) (until I crushed my left thumb in a motorcycle accident)
Then, one day a few years ago, I was watching SpongeBob SquarePants (as yer do) when it dawned on me I could play a ukulele & accompany myself on the harp & play Mississippi Jug Band songs... So I bought a ukulele, which led to more ukuleles of different sizes, one of which was a baritone, which meant learning a whole bunch of new names for chords I already knew. Then I found out baritone ukuleles are basically the first 4 strings of a guitar & my world turned upside down!
So, I bit the bullet & bought a guitar last Xmas & I've got to say, I wish I had done it decades ago! The way they are laid out constantly amazes me... I'm not saying they're easy to play but they are far more logical than one might expect.
So, I'm hooked! I'm making noticeable progress & can now play all the Major & minor chords in all the keys, both open (where possible) & barred AND (thanks to RUclips) am able to solo (at a basic level) over Major & minor grooves!
Next challenge is Travis picking & then alternate tunings & slide... It's never too late! Although, I am a bit worried about losing an arm or something. After all, I've got a history of that sort of thing happening... ;)
Thanks for an inspirational video!
I don’t even think 20 is too late. If you spent 5 years practicing, every day for at least 1 hr, you’ll get an awesome level and you’ll be only 25, really young still. I’m 26, started at 18, mediocrely practicing, and still got a very nice level, well, the last two years I really had to commit and start practicing very decently. If I had done that right off the bat I would be better, not doubt. But even when the first 4 years of practicing I was very lazy, and could still get a nice guitar level, I was able to catch up.
I always looked at it like you can sit on your hands and do nothing or take into affect that you breathing, so just do it age gonna come no matter when you start
I bought a guitar when I was 17, but my mother accidentally broke it. I have never touched a guitar since. I am 27 years old. I bought another Yamaha guitar. I like metal music.
I'm only 11 year old than you, and here I am telling myself i'm too old to learn anything. I was gonna just follow the cycle of my family, of working dead-end job and be miserable until the day I die. I haven't lived to the fullest or even traveled most of my life, so starting now. I spent too many years doubting myself and allowing others to doubt me.
Both of you guys can do it!! Fuck yeah!!! Keep going!!! It’s never too late to learn something!🤘🏽
@@annt.7785 as we age nueros in brain starts to lose but we do guitar like something our brain's nuerons start to grow far good luck it's about planning learn songs music theory and ear training.
I tried practicing guitar at 18 but I gave up on it because it felt like chore rather than something to strive for. I tried again in my mid 20s but the guitar I had kept braking and going out of tune and I was too broke to take it to a luthier. I finally tried at 30 and I was starting to enjoy practicing but the bridge on my acoustic was about to snap off because I made the strings too tight after that I gave up on trying to learn.
53 and started learning for the first time. 😂
Idk if that’s old but Iron Maiden first album was in 1980, 5 years after they started the band! And almost everyone was in their mid 20s.
My name's wesley but I started this yr at 24. there's no hope for older Wesleys
How is Wes Montgomery starting late, at 19 years old?
Usually guitar gods are either taught or get their hands on an axe earlier in life.
love you for making this hahaah you the best man
Thank you
❤ great didint know T Móvel Ford. I remember of Joe Baiza ano starter to practice when 27, qnd even thought for little bit known in alt. music he is a jazz guitarrst
I started practicing at 17 and have been practicing every day for like 5 months now. I think if I just keep practicing and have patience I will be able to play Spanish Fly by Van Halen in like 2 years.
Thats inspire me to restore my guitar
Thank you.
"One's enough": You know it, brother.
nice to hear some late starters :)
it would be real nice to see and hear some female ones too!
I’ve been practicing at least an hour a day for 13 months. I’m still terrible also 40, have high drive, zero rhythm. Lol seems hopeless. If I can’t strum a song by two years, 800 hours of practice I’m gonna find something else to do

Believe it or not Frank Zappa didn't start playing guitar until he was 18. He started off on drums and could read and write music and understood melody and composition but did start on guitar until age 18. This info came from a Zappa biography I read.
I'm a 64 year old man and it is harder to play when you're older don't have the muscle memory capability you do when you're younger because when I was younger I started playing and it was easy but I didn't pursuit cos I was too busy playing the drums
Two of these four artists started at 19 and 24 - which is not old by any reasonable definition - that should tell it’s very hard to find recognisable successful artists who started later in life. You can be the first one but you should know that the odds aren’t good
I started playing when i was 14 and i stopped when i was 24. I pick it back up when i was 35 and stopped at 35. I"m 51 now.
Quick question. Would you recommend a in person lessons or a app based teaching method. I
Wait a second, how come I wasn't on the list? :D I didn't know that about Chuck Berry, just figured he was a music bad ass his entire life. Adding the other guys to my Tidal list to check out. Interesting reads about the others you listed in your comment. It would be interesting to find some "midlife" old farts like yourself that "made it" :D I'm only 46, so I'm still a spring chicken, though my neck feels 89 years old this week :/
Sorry Rich maybe next time 😂 Yes I would like to find some people who are similar age and learned to play well. Might add that to my list, good idea.
Alright, i'm 45, and going to start tomorrow... coz it's midnight here in my country...
In all seriousness this is encouraging. One of my recent dreams has been to make it big, of course not really because what I really want is to become an accomplished guitarist, and that's what I mean by big. Not the fame. Sounds discouraging.
I know what you are saying and I am sure you will get there with the passion you have for playing 👍
What was the Chuck Berry autobiography called?
I always loved music but kept telling myself my entire life that guitar isn’t for me as I had a failed attempt to learn classical guitar as a very young kid.
Last year I spent a few months living among semi-professional musicians and befriended a band. That inspired me to finally start learning at age 36 around 5 months ago.
Never before in my life did I get obsessed with something that much.
My goal is to be able to play pub gigs with a band within this year. Getting there 💪🏼
How are you going man? I’m 30 now and started at 29 it’s been a year and I can’t put it down! I thought I was to old to start! But after this and seeing the comments and the gravel road guy! Means I still have hope! How are you going? I mainly wanted to learn nirvana got a teacher and I never thought Ild want to learn other music instead don’t get me wrong I love playing nirvana but also green day the clash talking heads! Edwyn Collins!!
I've played for 26 years but i'm only 35 and still can't find a band
It was Lionel Hampton ( Pictured) with Wes Montgomery not Leo Hampton
The younger you are when you start to play an instrument the better you'll be ar a younger age probably takes about 20 years to get really good, start T 13 you'll be kicking ass at 25 some people are Prodigy some people can do it quicker
Crap im 52
Dude the fact that your list held many African American guitar players really blew me away. I just didn't expevtbthat at all and I can't even explain the impact that just haf on me as a black, self taught guitar plater in America. To be historically acknowledged and included and not overlooked like they didnt exist 👏🏾👏🏾💯Everybody on the list were new to me so I'll be looking them up to learn more but that just blew my mind so i gmhad to comment lol. Thank you.
I'm 15 thinking I'm too old damn
No way you’re probably 16 now I wish I started that young really, I was to poor. Now I’m 20 and I’m starting and still learning great. Start now brother
Joe Walsh of The Eagles picked up the guitar while he was in college. He wanted something to pass the time while doing his laundry.
no he started at ten are you thinking about there other guitarist?
@@yin8079 I just remember watching an interview with Joe Walsh where he was talking to a group of students at Kent State and mentioned how he picked up the guitar while getting his laundry done.

To much talking in the beginning
I picked up a first act guitar at 18 and I just couldn’t get the hang of it and it was painful too. I definitely plan to try again. I’m 32 now.
