It wasn’t until the reviews started coming out that I learned this was a courtroom drama. Not a bad thing, but I thought the movie was going to be about Joker and Harley starting their relationship and the nightmares they cause with musical numbers. Then, the reveal would be that the music was all in their heads and we see the chaos they caused. I mean, I guess good on them for going in a completely different direction, but from what I am hearing, this sounds like a movie that almost regrets existing and kind of hates the first?

I dont know, most of the time i dont even bother with movie trailers anymore and just go in blind. The director said himself all those years ago he wanted to make a good movie that tricks people thinking its a comic book movie. But fans on the internet myself included have their own ideas of what a sequel should be like. when its not up to anyone but the writers and director. Thing is though got a lot of weirdos that feel personally slighted cause a movie wasn't made to pander to their desires as if they are entitled to it. Like im not gonna be mad because i didnt get the movie i wanted to see because i wasnt the one funding and making it. So why are all these other weirdos coming out about it?

People dont get that just because a movie sequel dont go a certain way dont mean the creators hate them, its one thing to have love for a character but the parasocial level that the first movie generates when Joker has went through worse? Clearly its not the director who is the problem

I didn't know this movie was a musical, and for the first time ever in my movie going experience, the theatre slowly emptied out. I was with a group of four, and the theatre was packed. By around the third song, the crowed went from around 100, to just 20 by the end of that song. The movie is a slow start, and stays slow for a long time. It had interesting ideas and it didn't land on any of them mostly because it was way too interested in the fact that they had a Harley character to capitalize off of.
Also, I saw that Lady Gaga said that the movie isn't a musical, but that "the characters express themselves through song." is not a good look. They clearly didn't have a lot of faith in the musical aspect, and it really shows.

  • @fellowspacemarine

Sorry if this comes off as pretentious, but I already wrote this off the second it was announced. Even if the film was as good as the first, all I could ask myself once it was announced was "why...?" And I know you can ask that with any sequel, but the first one is such an experimental type film that works in it's own little vacuum of chaos in uncertainty that sequelising it at all is pointless. Yes it's TECHNICALLY a DC film, but is it tho...? It's about Joker, but pretty much only in the metaphorical sense that can only work if you remove all factors of DC, Batman included, so why the hell do we need more of that? Pretty sure WBs was like "People loved Joker and it made us a shit ton of money, make another!" And when the studio was like "How the hell are we supposed to serialize a hyper experimental film, that is entirely standalone from any resemblance of DC, where the whole point of the narrative is it's all being drove by an untrustworthy pov...?" WBs said "Lol idfk, make it a musical or something" And since no one else had any better ideas (and I don't blame them 🙃) they just rolled with it. It'd be like trying to make a sequel to Fight Club, by the idea alone it doesn't work

I was completely thrilled throughout the whole movie, and I loved the ending (and that the outcome was told in the intro).
I will admit that there were a bit too many musical numbers, but I liked how imperfect they were, as they all depicted Arthur's state of emotions.
That they were a dysfunctional couple was based on the fact that Lee was not interested in Arthur, only in his shadow, the Joker.
And this is the final outcome. Arthur created the Joker, but he _isn't_ the Joker, and neither is the guy in the final scene. Joker is an idea that will get picked up by / infect any individual broken enough, only to be consumed by it as well.
In a way, the movie even foreshadows the reaction of its audience via the reaction of the Joker fans in the courtroom, when Arthur admits that he is not Joker. This was the spark many of them needed to take up the mantle, as we saw in the final scene(s). Their disappointment and anger was the seed to grow many more "Jokers", the shadow lives on while consuming its creator and very likely all following hosts.
It's sad to see how people are not interested in such an amazing concept. I loved this movie.

It would seem that Joker has become the latest in a long line of films that fell into that pitfall of "This shouldn't have had a sequel." It is a shame too since one can argue that Joker definitely was a fantastic title for what it was and even if we were to remove the aspect of "Oh, this is set in a comic book world!" Joker still would have done well (even if it was just a random guy who calls himself Joker).
But yeah, I've heard other reviews and how there is the same sentiment of how this feels like this shouldn't exist. Not to say it didn't deserve a sequel, but it would be difficult to make a sequel to Joker (and clearly the end result does leave a lot to be desired). Going to be a miracle if there is a third one, but from what I've heard how this film ends... yeah... I don't think there will be a "Joker Part 3."

Hearing about what the director’s thoughts on comic films in general are and how he felt about the reactions to the first movie not being what he wanted, you definitely feel like he was really overcompensating to make the audience feel how he wanted them too in a sense. I feel a lot more of movie makers are somewhat fighting with their audience these days due to personal differences in opinion and it should not effect the creative process this much.

I liked the movie....but I also liked Metal gear solid 5 which has similar story. And a lot of people didn't like MGS5 for the same reasons.
The whole movie is a meta commentary on previous movie. First Joker setup a bar so high, put the expectation through the roof.
But then you have to ask yourself is barely educated abused Arthur able to live up to the character he created? To this grandious prince of crime who is bigger than life? He was doomed to be the god of his creation. Notice that at the beginning of the movie he was silent for almost I dont know 20 minutes before he had any line. And the entire time I kept thinking. What could he possibly say to convey that he is this confident and insane character. He couldnt, that's why he kept silent to prolong that mystique.
He was never the Joker. The perception of others made him to be the Joker. They seen in him something he wasn't. Which is entire point of the first movie. "I keep walking around and you dont notice me.", "If it was me dying on the sidewalk you'd walk right over me." Nobody gave or gives a damn about Arthur. Only after they seen something he created people noticed, not it wasnt him.
The scene with Garry was amazing because it showed Arthurs hypocrisy. He kept complaining that people dont see him yet he didnt see Garry either. Didnt even know his name.
The first movie with Joker is perfect. And thats the point of this movie. Living up to the expectations people created.Trying to be someone you are not. You can pretend you are someone else, but you can't do it for long and it won't make you happy.
In the end this movie is a joke........Knock knock....who's there?.....Arthur Fleck.......Arthur Fleck who?
