@@Dancing_Psycho absolutely! I prefer to request reactions to live performances from Metallica. “Creeping Death” live in Moscow 1991, and “Disposable Heroes” live in Mexico City 2009
@@Dancing_Psycho On the contrary, I would advocate doing the studio versions first and _then_ the live version! That way, you can get a feel for the song's original structure and then compare the live version to it and see what they changed during the show, if they improvised at all. I always liked doing that.
Metallica started back in late 1981. Ride the lightning came out in 1984. Fade to black was written after the band’s equipment was stolen during a band tour. This song was therapeutic in helping Metallica get through that experience
James is a master at writing lyrics. He writes them in a way that every listener can relate to unto themselves. They have a completely instrumental song on most of their albums. I recommend starting with Orion for the instrumentals.
My very 1st band, I was 16, our very 1st song we played all the way thru was the song that came right before this. a tune called for whom the bell tolls. Now, I always played by ear and we were so so very off on how it was actually played except for my drummer who was a year younger than me. His name was Steve and even at 15 was amazing on drums. A few months later, his dad came in to his room to find he had taken his own life and had his song on repeat. This song has been an emotional train wreck for me. im 48 now so its been a little bit.
I think everybody in the course of their life gets a handful of signature moments that they remember forever. Maybe things that wouldn't seem significant to others, but moments you just KNEW something about yourself had been revealed and solidified. First kiss, falling in love, birth of a child, those are big ones, or maybe on a smaller scale maybe something like the first time you try a favorite food or visit an awesome place. For me, one of those signature moments was in my room at 14 or 15 years old (I am now in my 40s) and playing this song for the first time. As soon as Kirk's intro solo pops in, I had literal goosebumps. The hair on my arms was standing up. My heart was racing. I probably re-listened to it a hundred times before I even got to the verse. From that moment I knew I loved this band, I knew I loved this genre, I knew I was going to be a guitar player (been playing 25 years now, started around when I discovered this band)...my whole life changed in that moment. Crazy what music can do to you.
You would be VERY surprised at to how many Metallica songs have a message to them. Fade to black, One, For whom the bell tolls, Master of Puppets, etc. Not to mention the switch ups in the songs. Their creativity from the start in the 80’s until now and the influence they have had on the music industry is legendary.
Metallica released their first album in 1983, 40 years ago with the album Kill Em All, and their popularity grew throughout the 1980"s. In 1991 they did a concert in Russia and the attendance estimates range from 1.6 million to 1.8 million.
Same here. Driving home from the hospital alone the night she passed away. For some reason this song came on back to back on two separate stations. Made me feel like it was her way of letting me know she was OK, and that I was going to be OK, and I could let go as she had.
Fade to black is my favorite metallica song. And also ride the lightning is my favorite album. RTL is also known as the death album because every song has a death conception about it
I was 11 years old when this album came out in 1984. (I'm old)....This was their 2nd album. I found this album when I was 14 & because I had a very hard life as a child music was my escape. I would put this album on and just lay between my two big tower speakers and get lost in the music. Still to this day this is my all time favorite song and my all time favorite album. I hope you listen to the whole album.
Metallica is such an amazing band. The artistry that goes into their music and lyrics are crazy!!. Fade to Black is a great power ballad about suicide and the mindset and sorrow of someone thinking about killing themselves. Metallica's music touches on so many topics. Master of Puppets following the horrors of drug addiction both in the lyrics and the music going from the addict needing the drug to the euphoria of the high and then back to the intense desire for more. In "One" they show the pains of war following a soldier that is severely injured, can't communicate with anyone and has only his thoughts to live with. In the Four Horseman they incorporate the sounds of the horse's hoofbeats into the drums and guitar solos. In Ride the Lightning they sing about a death row inmate about to be put in the electric chair and his final thoughts. Metallica is a band of truly amazing artists.

I appreciate that you identified various things that influenced other artists or metal sub-genres. One reason why this song is so great is because it is timeless. It is just as powerful now as it was when first came out. On the opposite side of the coin, the largest reason why it is great is because of "when" it was released. Your comment that it sounded more "Hard Rock" than "Metal" is understandable. This particular song does lean more on the hard rock side. But, If you were a kid in the 80's there were only a few sources for "new" music; the radio, television and trading cassette tapes. This kind of music was not mainstream. This was something you heard because you stayed up late enough to watch "Headbanger's Ball". Or someone else personally introduced it to you. Keep doing the reactions and we'll keep introducing you to "new" old music. :)
Back in the early 80s, there were 4 big metal bands. Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth. They each brought something slightly different to the genre and were the founding bands of a genre called thrash.
@@Dancing_Psycho Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and some others were all just a little earlier. To be honest, the way the metal genre gets cut into so many subgenres has always been confusing. Now that I’m nearly 50, it’s downright irritating.
Metallica formed in 1981, released their 1st album titled KILL 'EM ALL in 1983 and have dominated the Metal scene eversince. The Big 4 in Metal was Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth. Exodus, Overkill, Testament, Sepultura and others soon joined the collective stage. Go back to the KILL 'EM ALL album and give it a complete listen to see how it all started!!&!
This record was made in 1984. Metal had very few subcategories back then. It was just called ‘heavy metal’ or ‘thrash metal’ back in those days. Metallica released their first official album in 1983. *Ride the Lightning* was their second album, released in 1984.

Man you should listen more Metallica! Im also very young (21) and discovered Metallica in the covid and they literally changed my life, young people needs to make music like this again, is so sad to see the ignorance and lack of culture that young people has nowadays...
There appears to be a cycle of chaos and order. Metallica rose during a time of order, and there is great order in their early music, but it was a tearing part of that order. Today is a time of chaos. Neither chaos nor order is good or bad on their own. Chaos is unfettered potential, and order is stability and comfort. Too much of either is problematic, but a constant interplay between the two is where true artistry comes from. (The above opinions are my own, and you get what you pay for, and as you paid nothing for my two cents worth, it is quite possible my opinion is worth exactly nothing. If you have an erection lasting more than four hours consult a physician. Some assembly required. Allow six to eight weeks for delivery. Some restrictions apply.)

So glad you didn't listen to the live version, they all have too much crowd fill.....35 years ago in high school this was my favorite song. Your elders are WATCHING you and smiling. :)
Metallica definitely plays its own style of metal. Moreover their musical craftmanship ist outstanding which becomes obvious in rapid changes of speed and unexpected "shots" and "jags". They simply are one of a kind in their genre.
This was written after they had their equipment stolen, just starting out and still broke. Check out one, sanitarium, dyers eve and nothing else matters if you like metallica ballads .. 😊
Nice video, man; well-spoken, professional reaction. I know I'm not alone in considering Metallica one of the greatest metal bands of all time. I'm pretty sure you'll greatly enjoy exploring more of their catalog.

When reacting to Metallica always pay attention to the lyrics. They are every bit as important as the instruments. Metallica formed in 1981 and just dropped a new album and are touring. They are all right around 60 years old now and still going strong. Start with their first 3 albums to really get a feel for why they are the best (my opinion) but every album is great in their right.
There was a kid we all knew, a friend of mine, cool friend of mine, but troubled, his name is not of consequence; he once said, as we were talking up this new Metallica song: "I hate that song" ...I was like, "What, why?" He replied "it's too personal"...a short time later he put a gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger....he is gone now...please, tell someone if you are having thoughts of suicide
Much of metalcore, death metal, etc....came from early thrash metal(from the 80s) which to me takes the energy of hardcore punk and hard rock and meshes them together. Metallica was one of the beginners of thrash metal. Their first four albums were the best. Kill em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, And Justice For All. For more thrash, give a listen to Slayer, Venom, Flotsem and Jetsom, Anthrax, Storm Troopers of Death, and early Exodus. If you want to dabble with hardcore punk, listen to Poison Idea, Black Flag, MDC, TSOL, Cro Mags and too many more for me to list. Hope this fills your interest in rock, metal, and anything hardcore.
suchende, glad metal helped you. the disturbed vid is always good. all life is a blessing and ending it is a curse. not to the ones who does it but to all those who love them. been there.........I was a drug addict and came clean, moment of clarity? found my wife of 25 years, had my son of almost 17. music can be a cure!!!!! especially heavy metal. its a release of energy that also helped me cope with my demons. Metal is a drug though....................once you go down this rabbit hole you want more, harder, faster, more!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i started with metallica and im now with meshuggah and autopsy
I really was impressed by your reaction. You actually reacted to it. Most reaction videos is just the people listening to the song and not saying anything constructive or descriptive. Well done. You earned a subscribe and a like from me.
@@Dancing_Psycho I really appreciated some substance to your reaction. It was like a breath of fresh air to hear someone actually talking in an educated manner about music instead of a husband and wife reaction video where they just listen to it and are like, "we like it"
@@Prosch23 hahahaha, personally can't stand those "i like it" reactions! Really trying to stay far away from that so that requires knowing a little bit about music here and there and putting to words what I appreciate about a song so much :)
I agree on this sounding more to hard rock , but they surely are metal. This is one of the slower songs of Metallica. ( great one though). But if you want to hear the metal Metallica form ride the lightning, check out trapped under ice or creeping death ;-) cheers
Originally a thrash metal band, Metallica shifted into less heavier material as the years went on, eventually becoming a metal band that focused on heavy metal music.
Im so happy you embrace great Metal of Generation X., Metallica is timeless and Im so glad that todays younger generation is seeing how great the music is that I listened to growing up..Rock on little brother.😎🤘
Since you are a drummer oh offer you a few suggestions of course the song One it's very heavy drumming the next one would be blackened but overall Metallica always has pretty heavy drums both of those songs also have good guitar I would suggest an overlooked song of theirs but I believe is just an awesome song is Damage Inc. there's more but if you start with those I think you'll be happy and probably hooked for life LoL
@@Dancing_Psycho I forgot to add that when you and if you check out the song One do the version that is overlaid with the movie Johnny get your gun. Little context the song and the movie is about a soldier that gets blown up by a landmine and loses his arms legs eyesight hearing and ability to speak so he's trapped inside his self. Also FYI they're live versions or harder and faster.
@@Dancing_Psycho I believe it was thier first music video and if you start at the beginning and work yer way through their albums in order you’ll get a better feel for the band and their progression. 🤘🏼 ENJOY😁
Many gems off this album. I'd suggest creeping death off same album, or maybe master of puppets off the master of puppets album. Enjoy. I'll sub to see if u r willing to check out them in this time period of their career. For reference to their talent they recorded the first album when in their early 20's. And this was early thrash metal in the 80's.
Do yourself a favor and check out more of Metallica. They are LEGENDS of metal. Master of Puppets and One are required listening. 🤘If you want to go even further back, check out some Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath as well. Also realize this video was made in 2021, so I hope you've already expanded your metal horizon. 😄

Metallica is one of the original big 4 thrash metal bands, the others being Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax. Metallica was the most successful of the 4 and of metal in general. They still have a huge following and are still making music and touring. Yes, Metallica probably influenced a lot of the metal you are listening to today. If you want to go even further back, Black Sabbath were the original metal band. They kind of kicked off modern metal in the early 70's. Iron Maiden is also another huge metal band from this era and well worth checking out. They are more standard metal than thrash. They are also still making music and touring.
So much things between this and slaughter to prevail or suicide silence. If you want to know anything about rock dm me. I want to be really clear. I'm not the guru of music, just a metalhead that is also a musician and like modern, old, different styles. I'j goad you liked the song. If you want a wicked kickdrum listen to dyers eve song or Slayers angel of death. Or basically any old behemoth song.
@@Dancing_Psycho yes it is. I actually have 2 bands. And yeah, i completely understand this. All my lyrics are from personal experiences and struggles I have. It's the best way for me to process my emotions. Like the sec9nd album ir's my story on how i went to the shitter and almost died because of too much rock and roll. If you want to check it out just tell me and i can provide ypu with a link to a video or playlist. I don't really like to push my music on people. This record was made in 1984. Metal had very few subcategories back then. It was just called ‘heavy metal’ or ‘thrash metal’ back in those days.
Metallica released their first official album in 1983. *Ride the Lightning* was their second album, released in 1984.

Agreed! I'm excited for the ride!

Such a sad story.. May he still rest in peace and still wishing you strength

Thanks Kenneth! Awesome!

@@Dancing_Psycho I forgot to add that when you and if you check out the song One do the version that is overlaid with the movie Johnny get your gun.
