    Not only was James' favorite amp stolen, it was a gift from his mother, who died of cancer when he was 16. The depression you hear in this song is from James remembering his mother and the loss of the amp she gave him.

    James, who wrote the song was upset that the break in of their gear truck which most of their gear was stolen, mainly his favorite Marshall Amp his mother bought him after his father left them when he was 13. Not long after, she died of cancer. This explains the hurt in this song. One of my favorites

    Great song and it still holds up. Timeless. Fade to Black was very real to our group of friends. Most of us could relate and it did actually help because our favorite band understood and we could relate. That's why it's so powerful. They don't hide from it. I saw this set live twice back on the Lightening tour (amazing to see Cliff back then). The show in Sacramento, CA, I believe '85, they opened for another Bay Area band called Y&T who had a minor hit with the song Summertime Girls. Armored Saint opened the show. Metallica pretty much blew everyone off the stage. During Fade to Black, James Explorer was out of tune. The E string was out. He was so pissed on that intro. They gave him the Gibson Flying V and he made the intro work in the same key. The recorded show is floating around on RUclips.

    Thanks for the Metallica! A couple thoughts/requests.
    1) I hope you'll also react to some covers that they did. Am I Evil is in my top few favorite Metallica songs.
    2) After James injured his vocal chords and took some lessons to protect himself, he focused on singing better. I think his best ever vocals springing out of this are in Bleeding Me. Great lyrics on this one too; whereas a lot of his/their lyrics are very dark, dude here admits that he's been his own worst enemy, and is pushing hard for something better.

    Cliff Burton had a lot of influence on their compositional style (on the first four albums) because he had studied classical music theory. This is one of the reasons why he’s so beloved by Metallica fans. He was more than just a great bass player.

    • @vibingwithvinyl
      @vibingwithvinyl 2 года назад +3

      Not really on the first album though, the songs were pretty much done by the time he joined the band.

    • @QAjimine1
      @QAjimine1 2 года назад +1

      @@vibingwithvinyl I would concede that your assessment is somewhat true. Cliff didn’t have as much of an influence as he did on the later three albums, but he did come up the album title and the idea for adding the bass solo, Anesthesia, as well as composing it.
      I’d say that their first album was where Burton’s influence began. He had to have some say on the musical compositions considering he was with the band a year before the first album released. It was released in June of ‘83 and they recorded it in April/May of that same year. I’d also add that the inklings of their signature compositional sound can be heard in songs like, Four Horsemen, Phantom Lord, and No Remorse.
