    Hey everyone! I'm really excited to share my complete photo + video review of Rokinon/Samyang's first ever AF zoom lens - the Samyang 24-70mm f2.8. I have HEAPS of SOOC, unedited 1:1 photos for you to look at from this lens on the Sony A7III as we check out the performance, image quality and more at a portrait photoshoot. I also test out this lens for video on the Sony A7sIII and check out if it really is par-focal or not. Let me know what you think of this lens and my review in the comments!

    This lens seems to be so polarizing, it’s super interesting. All the people who are super technical reviewers don’t seem to love it, all the people who are actual creatives love it because the images it produced are absolutely beautiful. I’ll side with the creatives on this one ;)

    Great lens and great review! There's a ton of online lens reviews but most cater either to photographers or to video. I love how you cover everything for everyone (quickly and beautifully). Barely anyone covers both Parfocalness and Focus breathing while also covering all the things that are more geared to photographs. Congrats and thank you!
    The only 24-70 2.8 E mount lens that has barely any focus breathing and has dead-on parfocalness is the Sigma 24-70 2.8 (at least from my tests and my copy!). Also the parfocal nature of the Sigma is optical. No lens auto-focus required.
    Crossing fingers for Samyang 16-35 2.8...

  • @apricanephoto

    It does look like Samyang is knocking it out of the park with this zoom, I'm just looking forward to what else they might have in store for the future (a affordable, high-performance 70-200/2.8? a 100mm macro?). If they keep this up it seems like they might be able to replace Tamron and even Sigma as the best third-party option for Sony FE lenses.

      @@dicekolev5360 It very well may be the best 50/1.8 from technical standpoint, but it doesn't work on my Sony camera and probably no one values the difference so much to go (back) to Nikon ;)
      Also better/more reliably working camera/gear doesn't make you "lazy", it mostly allows you spend time on non-technical issues, model, creativity etc. Who has time to wait for Nikon to catch up all those years. And believe me, I wish they did sooner - competition is good and I loved my Nikon gear.

    I have autofocus problem in video mode with this 24-70 and a7iv, and im not sure why. Basically to get eye af working i have to tap on object or person, or hold af bitton while shooting. If in photo mode i get green square, in video mode i never get green square, but grey one instead. I have AF-c on with human eye autotrack priority on and im not sure why i have these problems. Its a pain to film on gimbal, half of footage is out of focus and tbh i dont know what to do anymore.

    Certainly a solid performing lens. Just need it on Fuji X Mount hahaha That parfocal issue though... they were definitely trying to use firmware to get around it. Whether that's fixable with updates remains to be seen. I don't think it can to be honest. They can make it faster, but fast enough to make it equivalent to a real parfocal lens... I just dunno.

I have updated my sony a7 IV firmware but most of the time its hard to get pin point focus when I try to take pictures enabling single AF... When eye detection is enabled it either focuses behind the eye or nose plane...but sony GM shows me no problem ...

    The parfocal aspect is clearly firmware driven, it's almost impossible to make it at optical level at this price point (like expensive and calibrated cine lenses).
    From my experience with the lens so far it's more reliable going from (some) tele to wide, because I think it's more precise what the AF distance than the other way around - there's much more depth of field on the wider end so it might not be precise enough going tele from there.

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  2 года назад +2

      I found the opposite actually, for me the shift in focus is more significant when zooming out. At about 60mm is where completely loses it before coming back in. Zooming in it’s a little less noticeable if you go really slow. If it’s not possible at this price point (which I agree!) they shouldn’t be calling it parfocal.

    • @PetrKlapper
      @PetrKlapper 2 года назад +1

      @@juliatrotti I think we're talking about two different things :)
      What you seem to describe is the fact, that the refocus is slower to follow the zooming before the motor electronically corrects for the previous distance (because the optics itself is not parfocal and more importantly even a bit variable unless really expensive - there's a nice blog post on LensRentals about that). I think it's nice that they made the function available "the only way possible" at this level, but it's mostly for photos or slower zooming video I think.
      What I meant is that it's more precise (when "settled" after zooming) when going from tele (more accurately focused due to less depth of field) to wide, regardless how it's delayed whichever way and zooming speed.

      The 35 will give you more background blur but you'll have to move further away from the subject. I use the 28 f2 to film my videos on my channel and it's an amazing lens, but the 35 is better (also more expensive).

    How would you compare this to the tamron g1 and g2 or even the sigma. I have the tamron g1 now and I do notice it struggles to focus when shooting while zooming. Typically this is during weddings when I want to get wide and close during the walk down the aisle. Considering upgrading to the samyang of the tamron g2 but they are different price points... Is this worth the additional 300?

      This is not a definitive answer but I was reviewing some combat sports training videos at 60 fps shot a few days ago with my Tamron 28-75 G2 in a very dark training room at high ISOs. Focus while zooming in & out appear seamless. Previously owned the G1 and was contemplating the Sigma 24-70 vs the Tamron G2. Ultimately went with the Tamron based primarily on near identical optics and the Tamron’s significantly lower weight. This Samyang is almost twice the weight of the G2.
