Hey everyone! I'm really excited to share my complete photo + video review of Rokinon/Samyang's first ever AF zoom lens - the Samyang 24-70mm f2.8. I have HEAPS of SOOC, unedited 1:1 photos for you to look at from this lens on the Sony A7III as we check out the performance, image quality and more at a portrait photoshoot. I also test out this lens for video on the Sony A7sIII and check out if it really is par-focal or not. Let me know what you think of this lens and my review in the comments!

What do you think of this lens? By the way, you can download a highres sample gallery of photos I took on the Sony A7 IV + Samyang 24-70mm f2.8 on my blog here: www.blog.juliatrotti.com/pictures/samyang-24-70mm-review
The same issues with Marc Alhadeff review about parfocal on this lens..
Nice video, btw :)
@@rollymartha oh nice I’ll have to check out their video! I was trying to find someone else who shared this but most videos just mentioned it without any examples. And thank you!
I love you julia 🥴😜

So happy that you do lens reviews also from third-party companies like samyang. A quick question: would you use this lens for a paid job?
This lens seems to be so polarizing, it’s super interesting. All the people who are super technical reviewers don’t seem to love it, all the people who are actual creatives love it because the images it produced are absolutely beautiful. I’ll side with the creatives on this one ;)
Great lens and great review! There's a ton of online lens reviews but most cater either to photographers or to video. I love how you cover everything for everyone (quickly and beautifully). Barely anyone covers both Parfocalness and Focus breathing while also covering all the things that are more geared to photographs. Congrats and thank you!
The only 24-70 2.8 E mount lens that has barely any focus breathing and has dead-on parfocalness is the Sigma 24-70 2.8 (at least from my tests and my copy!). Also the parfocal nature of the Sigma is optical. No lens auto-focus required.
Crossing fingers for Samyang 16-35 2.8...
It does look like Samyang is knocking it out of the park with this zoom, I'm just looking forward to what else they might have in store for the future (a affordable, high-performance 70-200/2.8? a 100mm macro?). If they keep this up it seems like they might be able to replace Tamron and even Sigma as the best third-party option for Sony FE lenses.
Wow this looks so good! I didn't expect that from a zoom lens!
Mine just got delivered 🥰 bought it because of your amazing review ❤️ thank you for what you're doing for us Julia ❤️❤️✨
YES! the Samyang 85mm 1.4 AF lens and 85mm 1.2 XP MF lens are both KILLER! My all time favorites. I'm investing in this 24-70mm AF. Thank you for the video!
Thanks Julia, your videos are always super helpful.
I will definitely consider this lens now. I wasn’t too sure about the brand.
Julia you are such a good photographer! I absolutely love watching your videos they are so chill yet informative. I just ordered a Sony A7 IV to replace my 11 year old Nikon - wish me luck! Now trying to decide which of these popular zoom lenses to get.
Same here
What one did you go with? I have the tamron 28-75 and am considering changing to this?
@@lemonchop1799 did u ever change ur lens ?
I just bought this lens without knowing much about it, just followed my feeling. SO glad I did, love the look of it for photos + video.
Ur reviews are always amazing !!
The AF performance and image quality is great! I'm also a fan of the Samyang look. A touch of warmth to the popping sharpness. Been a long time user of their wide primes.
Have you had any issues with the mount? I have seen images of the mount breaking off.
Thanks Julia, for this review.. i am silent viewers of your videos.. and you are one of my inspiration in this new hobby of mine photography.
I bought the lens two Days ago. I Agree with Julia. Amazing lens !
Excellent lens. A tad bit steep for their first zoom but it may be worth it. Their 24mm 1.8 blew my mind. I returned my 24mm GM for the Samyang. That was an easy win for SY.
Hey Julia! I mainly use prime lenses, but i needed a zoom lens, I bought it today and I already used in two photoshoots. It's an amazing lens, I love it! It's my third Samyang lens, and your review convinced me to buy this lens, so thank you for it! Big hug from Hungary! :) Oh and it's a super review, as always!
Szia. Melyik obit vetted meg ? Samyang?
Thank you for mentioning the 70-200 GM II, I was wondering about it at the same time you talked about it. I too like Samyang's rendering - for me it is the 45 f/1.8. :)
Nice review, I plan to buy this lens. Thanks Julia you look gorgeous
Thanks SO much for this honest assessment. I'm particularly keen on this lens compared to others because of the wider 24mm end.
Will be interesting to try it out in the weeks ahead. Kind Regards. hazard
Thanks for this great video. i found what i was excatly looking for.
Yooo I just got my a7IV and I just had to come back here to say this: The AF on this lens when pt on the a7IV, is literally as fast as my 70-200 2.8! This lens is A M A Z I N G! AND ITS PARFOCAL!
Julia, may I ask what is that adapter you have connected to your camera? I think it's a video recorded but I'm not sure. Kiddos for putting a great educational video on this lens, I learn so much from these photography videos. Thank you, I'm glad I'm a subscriber :)
I would love to see an updated video with this lens!
Brilliant review! Thank you!
Thanks for the effort! have you done similar testing with a Sigma 24-70?
Julia, great video! I see a extra device on your camera, and I was wondering what it is?
Lovely review as always! Do you have a link to the small thingy you use to record your evf? Can't seem to find it on your gear list! Thanks!
Hi super video thank you very much, I find it very interesting how fast the Sony can focus.
But what I really want to know, how do you have such a clean sound (voice) in all your videos? I did look at your description regarding the microphone, but there must be more to it. I would really appreciate an answer / link or tutorial :)
You should review the Samyang 50mm f/1.4 Mark 2 as well
Julia, thanks for this video. Honestly, wich is the best zoom for Sony ? Gm, sigma art, tamron? Or this one, samyang
Great video review, I'm looking for this lens to be available in Canada as I was considering this Samyang, or the new Tamron 28-75 G2 or the Sigma 24-70 Art or even the Sigma contemporary 28-70.
I like your channel so I subscribed. Take care.
If compare with Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8 in low light, which one is faster focus?
I gonna choose the new one for wedding shooting instead of Tamron 28-75 f2.8 that quite slow focus speed.
Very nice video. I am planning to get one here in NZ, let’s see how my copy turns out. Thanks heaps.
another lovely video!
Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN is 835 g, you googled the (Hsm) dslr lens wich is 1,020g and is much older, good video tho ;D
I thought so. Sigma DG DN is definitely a lot lighter
Ahhh oops! Thanks for clearing that up. Maybe Sigma should let me borrow their lenses finally so I don’t make that mistake again 😂😅
@@juliatrotti agreed!
@@juliatrottil'd love to see a comparison vid
Both round up to 1,000g. Which is 2 lbs. Still heavy.
I’m definitely going to order this lens thanks to your review! Question though…how the heck are you recording and taking stills on the same body? Lol
Would be interesting to see a comparison between the Samyang and the Sony Zeiss 24-70 f4.
Thinking of selling my Zeiss and getting this, I now get into areas where I need the faster aperture 🤔
Can you make a review on the Sigma 24-70 f2.8? I would love to know how good that lens actually is based through your review. Thanks.
I have never heard about this solution for parfocal lens. thank you.
I instantly had to click upon seeing this vid. Thanks Julia!
What focus modes do you use when shooting couples , saying weddings , portraits etc on the a7iii
Hey Julia you always did good thing I love you❤❤❤
I love samyang as a company. They keep putting out great lenses at more affordable prices. I hope they'll send you the 50mm 1.4 mk2 so you can maybe test it against the 50mm GM? I've always wanted a good 50mm but the GM is too much for me 😅. Amazing video btw!! I really appreciate the amount of work you put into your videos!
Nikon Z 50mm 1.8S is the best 50mm out there currently but oh well, All youtube influencers are lazy sonyboys af-addicted. I hope Julia doesn't get offended if even read this but facts are facts.
@@dicekolev5360 Lazy cause of AF? I don't know about you but AF is really important especially in professional work. I do agree that nikon lenses are extremely good for their price, but for the best 50mm out there, the 50mm GM has to be it. Nikon and Canon came with their f/1.2 version and the GM was the best out of them all.
Yes I’m currently organising a shoot to start on my 50mm f1.4 II review! And thank you so much 😄
I have some videos on my channel where I use manual focus vintage glass if you wanna check it out :) AF is important for professional work and being efficient with clients. But I have no problems shooting in manual when I want to as well.
@@dicekolev5360 It very well may be the best 50/1.8 from technical standpoint, but it doesn't work on my Sony camera and probably no one values the difference so much to go (back) to Nikon ;)
Also better/more reliably working camera/gear doesn't make you "lazy", it mostly allows you spend time on non-technical issues, model, creativity etc. Who has time to wait for Nikon to catch up all those years. And believe me, I wish they did sooner - competition is good and I loved my Nikon gear.
Nice catch with the parfocal thing, I probably wouldn’t have noticed that =)
So the big question when doing focus pulls manually for video: Is it focus by wire, or linear?
c'est toujours passionnant merci
Ох, спасибо! Именно этого объектива искал обзор !
Hi Julia!! My name is Larissa and I love you and your videos and I'm a huge addict of photography..just out of curiosity how many cameras do you have lol?
Does anyone know how this compares to the Sigma 24-70 2.8? Looking to get one or the other ASAP for my new Sony A7IV that is on its way
Great video 👌 how did you record the camera Evf while shooting?
Fav channel on RUclips
Thank you!!
was the 4k recorded internally with what codec and settings? the skintones look absolutely incredible!
great video btw!
Yes, it was recorded 4K internally with the XAVC S-I 4K file format in slog 3. So 4:2:2 10 bit. And thank you!
loved the review. personally i am a big fan of samyang lens
Omg yes! Just ordered mine yesterday and so glad to actually see it in action here!
Also what do you use to record your screen as you shoot?
where do you order?
@@memoritobn2778 I got mine from Jessops in the UK
Great work sis!

Yep she is so amazing!!
Thanks. How is this with dust in the lens or sensor? I had the Sigma 24-70 2.8 and got dirt on my sensor first time using it! Returned it and looking for another zoom.
This lens delivers beautiful photos
Great rundown. 👍 🥂
Very warm photos like the look
Hi Julia! Help please. What is the name of the device under your camera that allows you to record the screen?
IYO which would be more beneficial to a beginner for portrait/product: 85mm1.8 or Speedlite/trigger/Softbox
That’s video I was 👀 for … 🙌🙌
Any QC dust issues like sigma has had in their 24-70?
The two lenses are very similarly spec-ed and priced otherwise.
Hey!! Did you reviewed sigma 24-70 f2.8 dgdn art lens?✨
Uao que maravilha de canal ganhou mais um inscrito, meu sonho é ter uma câmera sony, mas por enquanto me resta a Canon 7D!!!! mesmo assim agradeço muito á Deus!!!
Hi Julia, wondering why aren't you using your new 7iv? Thank you for your videos! they are great!
I did this photoshoot before my A74 arrived! Also I’ll still have some shoots on the a73 to share in the future as well because it’s still a great and very capable camera. And thank you!
Thanks for this helpful review. I like Samyang but their reputation for quality control suffers providing a hit and miss outcome depending on the actual copy that is in your hand. I've got the Tamron 28-75 so I'm not sure if this would prove to be a useful addition.
The bokeh is silly good for a zoom lens! I guess you have to pay for that in weight... I am thorn between this and the new 50mm that is the opposite the lightest and smallest 1,4. Thank's for a awesome test!
Fantastic. Love your stuff. And model is gorgeous too. Are you going to get the a74?
She already got it. She did an unboxing video
@@_cjmccullough Thank you. I missed that video.
Hi Julia. Were you using Sony A7III for this video? How did you capture a video and stills at the same time. Eg 2:13 on the bottom left corner there is a small preview of the model and it is a video. Thanks!
Great review! Subbed
I have autofocus problem in video mode with this 24-70 and a7iv, and im not sure why. Basically to get eye af working i have to tap on object or person, or hold af bitton while shooting. If in photo mode i get green square, in video mode i never get green square, but grey one instead. I have AF-c on with human eye autotrack priority on and im not sure why i have these problems. Its a pain to film on gimbal, half of footage is out of focus and tbh i dont know what to do anymore.
Certainly a solid performing lens. Just need it on Fuji X Mount hahaha That parfocal issue though... they were definitely trying to use firmware to get around it. Whether that's fixable with updates remains to be seen. I don't think it can to be honest. They can make it faster, but fast enough to make it equivalent to a real parfocal lens... I just dunno.
Hi, if I use a7iv for product review, which best Sony Zoom Lens I should use?
Do you mean you’ll be using the a7iv for videos of yourself handing products, and for stills of the products you’re evaluating? Or are you shooting stills only? Also, will you be shooting primarily indoors?
Sigma 24-70 2.8 or Tamron 35-150mm 2.0-2.8
@@silklion7375 strongly agree with this.
I just reviewed the 35-150 and I think you’d get such a great focal range and just a beast of a lens to use for a lot of variety!
Would love to see you put the IAF on the new sony to the test with a faster moving, less compliant subject like a toddler 😅
KINDLY REPLY!!!
I am facing some problem while using Samyang 24-70 f2.8 with my Sony a7 IV. I have updated my sony a7 IV firmware but most of the time its hard to get pin point focus when I try to take pictures enabling single AF... When eye detection is enabled it either focuses behind the eye or nose plane...but sony GM shows me no problem ...
Is this lens the same as the Rokinon 24-70mm that was released in January 2022?
Which camera you used to record your.... RUclips videos......
What external recorder you use for capture view from sony ?
Dang I've been waiting for Samyang 24-70 reviews to start coming out
What's the build like? Is it plastic or metal barrel? I'm guessing metal judging by the weight of that monster

One question: my copy of this lens won’t focus to infinity at 70mm. Please help.
How do you get the very crispy sounding audio in your videos?
How are you able to do the video of the camera with the shutter and everything showing
please compare it to sigma 24-70 2.8 ART side by side?
I have to book you as a model to Germany or, more precisely, bring you to Cologne, is that feasible? :) :) On a TfP basis, of course
Sigma or samyang 24-70mm ? Please 🙏 and yestrday you said would make comparison a7iv and a7cii
The parfocal aspect is clearly firmware driven, it's almost impossible to make it at optical level at this price point (like expensive and calibrated cine lenses).
From my experience with the lens so far it's more reliable going from (some) tele to wide, because I think it's more precise what the AF distance than the other way around - there's much more depth of field on the wider end so it might not be precise enough going tele from there.
I found the opposite actually, for me the shift in focus is more significant when zooming out. At about 60mm is where completely loses it before coming back in. Zooming in it’s a little less noticeable if you go really slow. If it’s not possible at this price point (which I agree!) they shouldn’t be calling it parfocal.
@@juliatrotti I think we're talking about two different things :)
What you seem to describe is the fact, that the refocus is slower to follow the zooming before the motor electronically corrects for the previous distance (because the optics itself is not parfocal and more importantly even a bit variable unless really expensive - there's a nice blog post on LensRentals about that). I think it's nice that they made the function available "the only way possible" at this level, but it's mostly for photos or slower zooming video I think.
What I meant is that it's more precise (when "settled" after zooming) when going from tele (more accurately focused due to less depth of field) to wide, regardless how it's delayed whichever way and zooming speed.
@@PetrKlapper ooh I see what you mean, I misread your first comment!
Thank you for sharing.

please make a comparison between Tamron 28-70 vs samyang 24-80
Please review Samyang 24-70mm F2.8 vs sigma 24-70mm F2.8
Would you get the Samyang brand new or the Sigma used?
Julia, can you recommend what the lens I need for Vlog ? Sony 28mm f2 or Sony FE35 f1.8 (sel35f18f) ? I want to shoot my head and necks in frame and blured background :-)
The 35 will give you more background blur but you'll have to move further away from the subject. I use the 28 f2 to film my videos on my channel and it's an amazing lens, but the 35 is better (also more expensive).
How would you compare this to the tamron g1 and g2 or even the sigma. I have the tamron g1 now and I do notice it struggles to focus when shooting while zooming. Typically this is during weddings when I want to get wide and close during the walk down the aisle. Considering upgrading to the samyang of the tamron g2 but they are different price points... Is this worth the additional 300?
I am in same situation
This is not a definitive answer but I was reviewing some combat sports training videos at 60 fps shot a few days ago with my Tamron 28-75 G2 in a very dark training room at high ISOs. Focus while zooming in & out appear seamless. Previously owned the G1 and was contemplating the Sigma 24-70 vs the Tamron G2. Ultimately went with the Tamron based primarily on near identical optics and the Tamron’s significantly lower weight. This Samyang is almost twice the weight of the G2.
@@tomirwinphoto curios as well, but IMHO i actually like the rendering from this lens over tamron, and I love my tamron holy trinity.
@@matthewchute5514 Can’t argue with your preferences but when I want an image to pop I’ll reach for a prime that stands apart from zooms such as a 35, 85 or 135. In my experience the gap among zooms pales in comparison with what a prime can do.
@@tomirwinphoto absolutely. Primes will always be greater than zooms! I will say zooms have come a long way though!
