In a nutshell, from the minute i heard "Across the Night" Diorama had changed me forever. This album is sheer genius. They need to get back together.
what is the deal with dan's taste for techy synth pop music? he said so himself that across the night is an invitation to the audience, and now he's making electronic music singing in hushed falsetto. dan left the audience hanging didn't he?
you hear a lot of comments like Silverchair died after neon ballroom or neon ballroom was their LAST GOOD ALBUM. They seriously must have something wrong with them. DIORAMA is amazing
Ben doesn't think so, but he really is. I mean, name any other person in their early 20s who could write something this beautiful and complex! Most people could only wish for Daniel's level of talent in Frogstomp, much less dream of being Diorama levels of talented. And the fact that this is just a demo, too! It's missing the entire orchestra, yet it doesn't feel any emptier than the final version. That's a clear sign of a musical genius.
Absolutely agree about the musical genius comments. I could not imagine being able to produce music so good. Just brilliant. I also feel the demos are not missing anything - just as good.
I have never, ever heard a band so brilliant as these guys, and that even goes beyond 2 of my favorite bands (well, now silverchair is pretty much it for me now). To think I grew up in this era and just recently rediscovered their popular songs and newly discovered all this other stuff I had never heard before. Pure orgasmic genius doesn't even begin to cover Daniel and his talents ♥
Amazing! One of the most underrated bands in HISTORY. I was so happy to be able to see Silverchair in San Francisco not long after their last album came out. Daniel Johns is still so amazing.... that VOICE!!!!
Their music inspires a lot of people I'm discovering them all over again I knew their more mainstream songs I didn't realize that they had so many others their songwriting is great
This whole album is amazing. When it first came out I listened to it for atleast 2 years straight. And this song is such a genius song. The Demo is a rough version that sounds raw and boundless. Then you have the album version that is a polished sparkling gem in the crown jewels called Diorama. Diorama is a piece of art. When Daniel pressed the record button and let their demo's be recorded over by silence, it was the best thing he could of done. It led the way to make this.
The harmonies in this song are much better than the studio version, much more pronounced and intricate. Definitely one of my favourites from the album.
Seriously, this version, because of that end, is 10x better than the album version. Not to say the album version isn't great, but this is just... so much better.
I dreamt of listening to this song last night. Actually I don't use the word epic, but I think in this case I must say "tuna in a brine" is an epic song. I'm so in love with Daniels voice and it's absolutely great how much it developed.

@dr3amsofglass - it came from the dvd Across The Night The Creation of Diorama. Its one of my fave dvd's they made. You most likely have to order it off Chairpage. I had to order from there. Make sure it NTSC format first.
ha...i've thought the same thing. that 2nd vocal harmony is some of the most interesting melodic content he's ever written. how could it have been cut? it's not like the inclusion of it would have made the song too over the top. lol
@punkguyrich Yes! I've been a long time chair fan, and only recently started getting into elliott smith. I definitely hear similarities between him and daniel johns. Elliott even sings with a bit of an australian accent.... in my opinion. But yeah, definitely, I agree.

They're not wrong, Neon Ballroom was their last good album. Diorama was their first masterpiece.
