I’m a diabetic and I enjoy my pipe. My friend when I was upset about my sugar being high and at that moment and he said to me to pull out my pipe and try to relax. And don’t you know I came back to silence with god and being still. It really helped me relax. I’m one to rush around on a daily day but the pipe reminds me to be still and know he’s god.
I am Diabetic, also-BTK Amputee. Pipe Smoker since '87 & lifelong Roman Catholic. Since the "Cut", BOTH have comforted me immensely. Both my Pipe and my Faith gifts of God's Grace from the Abyss of His Mercy. I hope Jefferson Davis spoke like this Man.
Please keep posting videos. Very relaxing and introspective to watch. I like how you regard the pipe as encompassesing the entirety of one's life rather than one simple hobby.
I love your contemplation on the value of smoking a pipe. I look forward to sitting on the deck each evening and ruminating on future projects, handy crafts, whittling, leatherwork that I will accomplish in the future. Taking the time to think, contemplate, and not worry about the reactionary immediate makes me happy and my nightly bowl helps in creating that peace. Glad there are others in the same ilk as I. Looking forward to hearing from you going forward and will be sure to purchase my tobaccos and supplies from you. I'm in the piedmont of NC and there few brick-and-mortar shops to visit and share in this state. Thank you for your service and content. Cheers, Neil
This made me think more about my reasoning for my enjoyment of pipe smoking. Besides the fact it takes more time and makes one slow down and learn to appreciate the finer things, but it often reminds me of things past, like a Gentleman sitting in a room with incredible wood grain and brass accents all around him, and perhaps some wonderful books in a large bookshelf, a leather chair with brass tacks... all sorts of things that were of a time with greater attention to detail, and a time where it was better understood that the best things take time and patience, and all those that sat and contemplated many wonderful things over a bowl of fine tobacco.
I often wonder what our founding fathers would be thinking right now. Have no fear. I assure you, this younger generation isn't as bad as people say. Many of us knows exactly what is going on in this country and a lot of us are fighting back to get us on the path to restoring our liberties. Just around the corner. It's going to be biblical. Keep the faith 🙏 God and country
From one Southern gentleman to another. I totally respect Mr. Foote’s standing his ground not to lay down his pipe upon his doctor’s orders! As far as respect for history, you are most assuredly correct that today’s young folk have a growing disregard for not just knowing but understanding their past. On my father’s side I am a descendant of Arthur Middleton a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Also, on my Mother’s side (she was a Wheeler”) we are directly descended from Gen. Joseph “Fightin Joe” Wheeler. Again, on my Mother’s side I have many Gantt and Smith relations there in South Carolina specifically from Summerville. My family also has a Douglas ancestor that fought at Lexington Green. That is just a smatterin of my family tree of which I am excessively proud…..as you can tell. Absolutely there is nothing for me as satisfying as sitting quietly with my pipe and cipherin through life’s many challenges and joys. I was blessed as a very young man of 16 to have been gifted a pipe from my grandfather, Judge Alton Wheeler, who then taught me all its secret joys. I have very much enjoyed your videos so far Alan and I look forward to seeing more. God Bless y’all my brother and stay safe. PS…..when you have a spare moment please swing by my channel and visit a spell.
I came because I saw it was a pipe video, I stayed because I saw that you are a fellow South Carolinian, I subscribed I noticed a Jonathan Edwards book on your shelf.
As a Midwestern Yankee, I must admit that I often find your presentation of your topics a bit over the top. But after thinking about that (while smoking a pipe), it's probably a form of admiration and envy. After all, my two top daydreams of my ultimate retirement are living in the countryside of the South and living in an Irish village, both involving sitting in a rocking chair and smoking a pipe. As to the content of this video, I suspect that many pipe smokers contemplate the very things you talked about.
Great video. The filmography and content is superb and our country would benefit from its wisdom. Thank you. Hope to see you in my Subs list soon. Happy piping.
Great introduction to a context of pipe smoking. Its extremely rare these times. Even scientists (or might I say especially scientists) limit their scope only to one aspect of pipe smoking, while scientific method doesn't grab other dimensions. My congratulations - texts like that I've found only in Chesterton writings!
Great video. Especially love your intro and perspective on pipe smoking. I started smoking a pipe after a battle with cancer and I realized that I needed to slow down and de-stress more.
This feels pleasantly like my Catholic priest's homily. Lovely delivery good sir. Matches great to this Virginia blend from H&H presently in my pipe. Sitting on the porch on a late summer evening.
Very enjoyable video. I’m happy to have found your channel. If I remember correctly, Mr. Foote was given that diagnosis while in his 60s and lived to be 88. I’m glad he put down the cigarettes instead of the pipe. I wish all cigarette smokers would do the same.
I’m 38, been smoking cigs for 20 years and Iv hated it forever, gonna quite in 2 weeks for my little boys birthday… Iv always loved my pipe and tobacco collection, will help with the smoke in my mouth sensation
Great video! You might consider suiting up in seersucker and reading from "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" while smoking a Missouri Meerschaum. Subbed!
The quote is most likely due to writer and philosopher George Santayana, and in its original form it read, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,wise words & should be understood,I smoke because as you stated slows me down & keeps me in touch with a slower pace of life & living
I really enjoy pipe smoking I have for quite some years now!I smoked a pipe just a cheap corn cob pipe from a drug store and fell in love immediately with the aromas and tastes that I never get from cigarettes. I smoke a pipe everyday and always look forward to expanding my interests and education on this subject.I've always loved to drive to look at tobacco fields and I can say Theres nothing like that experience and have always wanted to see one up close and personal.thank you for sharing your wisdom and enjoy all your videos.

Good perspectives... I appreciate your comment re ... When smoking a pipe, I am at work in mind and spirit. Bertrand Russell once said--- (I am omitting quotes as sometimes RUclips deletes my comments when I use quotation marks) Quote: I smoke a pipe all day long except when I'm eating or sleeping. Unquote. By the way, Nice intro. Wishing you good fortune and great piping.
This is a really great video, I agree with you it's great to sit and contemplate with a nice pipe it's It's good to be able to sit and contemplate life and decisions and you you're own personal meditations
A fellow pipe smoker, believer, and theologian! Entirely agreed on the rampant homogenisation of culture, predicated on the new and the fast-paced. So-called neophilia. The pipe forces itself upon you; you must bow to its needs, should you succeed.
Hello Allan, Just stumbled upon your channel tonight up here in Michigan. I appreciate your references to "prayer" and the "Good Shepherd." As a well studied man, what are your biblical convictions in connection with membership in a local church? Do you have a denomination you are apart of? Kindly, Elijah
Curious about your pipe there...reminds me of my Rattrays 5 friends billiard that smoked many a bowl of Exotic Orange...my first and only "no effort whatsoever" smoke ring (happened just once) with it...don't know why but the moment was magical!! Just watching that ring grow and fade... the weather just right to let that thing linger for a good while before disappearing to the heavens....i was sure leprechauns fairies hobbits and unicorns were going to show up! 😂😂😂😂 (perhaps i wasn't fast enough to see them)
Pipe smoking does exactly as you said, it forces a man or woman to slow down, which results in a chance for contemplation. A contemplation which is quite elusive these days, or certainly seems to be due to our culture's quick pace and infinite distractions. If one is able to slow their hands, their mind will follow.
Enjoyed this video. I am a young nonsmoker from Charlotte NC area. My biggest concern with starting pipe smoking is becoming nicotine reliant. Is that a danger, or can it be avoided?
Pipe smoking does NOT make you nicotine reliant. I smoke pipes for the relaxation of it. When Im hiking or some other outdoor event a nice pipe and good tobacco will help you enjoy the experience. I have been smoking a pipe since 1997 and I do not feel the need that say cigarette smokers do where they have to have it RIGHT NOW!!!!!! I can go a couple of weeks without smoking a pipe.
I've never cared for tobacco when I was younger, because I was opposed to cigarettes only. I've smoked cigars since my 20s and now pipes, its like a candy bar. I can go days, weeks months without it. Same with cigars and pipes, no strong cravings or headaches if I don't smoke. Hope that helps.
I smoke a pipe because I like it. I'm sure for some it's some leisurely activity but I don't smoke to forge a link to the past or romanticize something lost and forgotten. Yeah, it's definitely a time of my day to be more mindful of what I'm doing but I think people should smoke because they like it.
