Crypts are a great option if you can find them as well. Because of the relation of height of the abomination and crypt models, when you stand on a crypt the abominaton cannot deal any blows, as they all hit lower. Crypts are indestructible, so you can stay safe on top. But - and here is the kicker - the height ratio between the two is such that when abominatin gets real close aggroing on you their legs stick slightly above the height of the crypt. Not enough to hit you when they attack, as I mentioned above, but just about enough for you to be able to hit them with an axe. So you can just stand on top and deal damage without any danger to yourself. Be wary of the legs though, they can push you around a bit whil your're on top of the crypt. Not a lot, but keep an eye on that not to allow yourself to be pushed off.
I put portals atop crpyts and a bonfire right beside. I kite them back and try to get them to chase me around the crypt and thru the bonfire. You can also stand on top of the crypt and use fire arrows but it's pretty slow. Bonfire is best.

During its "waking up" animation Abomination takes double damage - you can try to score some potshots with your bow. Also you might be surprised but knives are pretty effective against these guys. They do not do a lot of damage, but their attack is very fast. This means much shorter stunlock in attack animation so you can react by blocking or rolling much faster. Using knife, you can try to run around Abomination and hit its hind legs if possible - usually it will try to turn to face you before attacking. As for late game: Crystal Battleaxe is my weapon of choice. Difficult to master but soooo much fun to use for... well almost everything.

I would love to see something similar to the bit at 0:29-1:29 here for trolls, i.e. the bit about how far do their attacks reach, both for the ones with the club and the ones without. That doesn't seem to be info that's easily available either on RUclips or elsewhere, but it would be very useful to know for base design - how much of a gap do you need between your outer walls and any buildings you don't want the troll to wreck as it's smashing through your wall to get to you?

I tend to skip the Root armour in Swamp and come back just to get the chest in Plains. I made the helmet in Swamp on this latest playthrough, thinking it would be good against Poison - and it is. With the helmet and a Poison mead, an Oozer did no damage at all to me. You're effectively immune to Poison. But then I cleared out some Surtlings and started leveling the area around their fire spout so that I could make a Coal farm. Next thing I know, my health has dropped from ~130 to 42 in just a few seconds, purely from touching the fire spout. I always make Surtling farms and not touching the flame is tricky as they usually die and drop their Coal very close to it. So I don't think I'll be wearing the Root helmet in Swamp, leastways not for Coal runs. It should be good for Blobs in the Crypts, though, no fire there.

The easiest way to kill these that I've found, is to run in circles around a Surtling spawner, to keep the Abomination on fire until it dies. Alternatively if there was no Surtling spawner available, I would kite it with fire arrows. Attempting to fight them melee is not only unacceptably dangerous, but there's no real need to.

Its arms are easier to target than its body plus we can avoid the body slam. But there are too few of them, I move up to silver age only encounter 3-4 of them. Unlike trolls you encounter them a lot while mining copper, iron mining is mostly in dungeon.
Easiest way to beat this when no fire is available or for early kill: Step 1. Use an axe. Step 2. Get in close and dodge the swipe, hit it twice before dodging the centre slam. Step 3. Hit 4 times more and then dodge the second centre slam backwards and take a stamina potion and get back in close. Step 4. Rinse and repeat and you’ll have one dead Abomination in no time.
@@cincinatus90 no worries, I did too when I first encountered them. But once you learn their attack pattern they become trivial, especially if you kite them around the crypts.

I don’t know for sure because I haven’t fought these guys with a shield a lot. But based upon my experience an Iron Buckler at maxed upgrade or a Banded Shield should work. At least for their lighter attacks.
by far the easiest way to fight these guys is just bating in the trunk slam, very easy to get out of the way by just running forward, (not under, forward and to the right) he will then turn around, hit the large trunk and he will go into trunk slam again, rinse repeat, use a wood cutting axe.
