Kevin and Rook's bromance is one of my favourite things about Omniverse. The episode where they go to the Tetramand home world and preparing a new car to resist Ben and his alien forms were my favourite episodes ever.
I nearly peed myself laughing at that episode, because Kevin and Rook were trying so hard to make a Ben resistant car, that they forgot about the other Tennyson that could cause just as much mayhem and property damage.
I think part of the reason Rook works so well with Gwen and Kevin is because he was partly designed to fill their roles. He's knowledgeable and level-headed like Gwen and he's also techy and quick-thinking like Kevin. They have shared interests so they can bond quickly but, crucially, they also have enough differences and distinct enough personalities that they all feel like real characters even when right next to each other.
They both have experiences beyond Earth that aren’t tied up with Ben. Rook doesn’t come from Earth, but Kevin spent time off planet one example of which is the catalyst for events in this episode.
I honestly wish they gave characters like Julie, Cooper and Alan more independance as characters like they did with Kevin and Gwen, so they could step in to help Ben and Rook as well. I think Julie especially could have joined alongside Ship in helping save the Mechamorphs from Malware.
Honestly Julie should have been a recurring character with Ben and Rook. There is a fanfic called "Ben 10: Guardians" by Shadow-DJ that shows what the Omniverse must have been like.
It helps that that the writers actually let the two groups mix and interact with each other regularly instead of doing what most writers do and just have one member of a group tag along with the other group for an episode and at most talk with only one person.
The real reason these Breakdowns take so long to make is because Kuro has to think of a new line to say for each OV intro sequence "Be sure to get a taste, don't let it go to waste, Ben 10" Might be my favorite so far
I agree with you that I really hate that they didn't make them 17 in Omniverse, but I'm guessing it's because that'd make Kevin 18 and maybe Cartoon Network didn't want that. They used to be kinda strict with that stuff
I've never heard anything about CN not wanting their characters to be 18, but if that's true, it's a good theory. Could you tell me other instances where that's been the case?
@@TheInkTank from the top of my head I remember Owen Dennis, Infinity Train's creator talking about it. He said that CN didn't allow him to make Book 5 of his show because the protagonist was an adult woman, with the excuse of there not being a "child entry point" and that it used to be harder. He says that the reason they even allowed Regular Show to have adults as main characters was because they were very childish. It's a bit strange, but it seems like the sorta thing that they got more chill about over time.
@@TheInkTankI thought you would talk about how him being an adult would date a 17 years old girl with still would be considered a minor when you said CN didn't wanted that
@@thewisthersgames I mean it's just one year and they started dating when they were both minors. And considering they allowed adults to be weird to Kevin and Ben before, I dont think they have an issue with that
He should have been 18 in Omniverse. Not only would it fix the whole "Kevin dating a minor" issue (even though it's not even an issue cause it's only a ~12 month difference), but it would make more sense given that Gwen is starting college and Ben is a payed Plumber employee who doesn't go to school. It would be an organic change as that's when they both would have graduated high school and entered the next chapter in their lives, as opposed to making Gwen go to college earlier and Ben being a high school dropout. Omniverse also treats returns of certains characters as if it's been a long time since they've seen them, so it feels like writing-wise, the show treats the world as if it's been a few years. But since CN executives (probably) feared having an adult main character, they were forced to keep saying he's 16, despite what the writing implies. Honestly, I think they could have gotten around this by merely never stating any of their ages at all in the show. That would probably satisfy executives, and DJW or some other staff members could have just confirmed that he is 18 on forums or something a few years later. But hindsight is 20/20, I guess. It's also baffling because CN has had a multitude of popular shows starring adult characters, even other superhero cartoons, like Justice League just about a decade prior. And even Regular Show, which was airing at the SAME TIME as Omniverse and was incredibly popular despite the main characters repeatedly being referred to as 23 years of age. TV executives are wild. Ayway, given there's no reference to his age, or any characters for that matter I think, after season 3, I like to imagine that from season 4 and onwards, he is 17, closing in on 18 by the end, or perhaps even being 18. And I know the typical counter argument to that (as well as my previous suggestion) is "But then he'd have master control. Azmuth said so!" and honestly, I never understood why fans hyperfocused so much on that line. Azmuth merely said "perhaps". And you know how grumpy and inconsistent of a man Azmuth can be. Is it really that hard to imagine he'd just not want to give Ben access to it when the time comes? Omniverse is full of retcons, I'm sure retconning something that wasn't even a stated fact wouldn't be a big deal.
I think logically it does make sense that often Ben just hits the dial without selecting anything, at this point he has access to ALL his aliens, trying to cycle through to get to the one he wants, especially when the Omnitrix is gonna ignore it anyway, would take up quite a bit of time. Letting the Omnitrix do its thing is probably the most efficent at this point lol
The looma fight is one of my favorite shock squatch moments in the series. Crash hopper and clockwork didn't get a single hit in against looma, but as soon as the smoke clears shocksquatch immediately comes out swinging and puts in work.
Clockwork could have won, but we never see him improvising his moves like Time Stopping or Slowing to dodge until later in OV. Whereas UA Clockwork only projected the past and can fire Eon’s time rays, which is extremely out of character for Ben to just kill Looma by aging her out of existence. But yea Shocksquatch was throwing dem hands fr. After all he could fuck over Alpha in the crossover, so naturally his lighting and his physical strength was nice to see used well.
To be honest, kinda like Kevin and Gwen's new designs even if Gwen doesn't need those glasses, and love how Kevin looks abit more rugged and that lock of a necklace with an eleven on it
For better or worse, Omniverse seemed to try and merge the classic and UAF character designs together. Some of the design decisions go a little too far for me, but I appreciate the effort.
the dynamic of the UAF trio is probably my favourite part of the show next to the aliens. there's just something so endearing about them as a team, which isn't shocking since it's a fan-favourite. seeing them all together again at any point in the show is always an exciting watch
I really like OV Fourarms, it's genuinely my favorite design for the character because it represents how Ben uses Fourarms - he's not a Tetramand Warrior, he's a Wrestler.
So, let me get this straight, Kevin basically had a fiancée at the age of 14. While in UAF, he was trying to get with Gwen, this really looks even worse on Kevin. How did he keep this a secret for so long?
I think Kevin, from the jump, knew that this whole marriage thing wasnt happening. And, while it is a douche move, Looma is a nutcase and warlordess, so its not like Kevin marrying her would have been good anyway.
Well the Tetramands said they’d be back in 3 of their years and since Kevin is 17 now, it makes sense that they’re coming to Earth now. Idk why they’re leaving but I think it explains why he was able to keep it a secret and why they weren’t looking for him.
26:08 I just like to believe that tetramand weddings are so spontaneous that all of their large/cruiser/war ships have built in wedding chapels. The only thing missing was the random dude that cries at every wedding he’s at. For the priest, he is probably use to fights during the wedding.
My head canon for Luma’s “as if I’d fight a girl” line is that on Khoros, it’s considered taboo for two women to fight, since that planet is fairly traditionalist and fighting is heavily linked to courtship for them
20:22 This actually makes a bit of sense, since we've previously seen that UAF Four Arms was even bigger than OS Four Arms during the Aggregor Arc. Plus with their species' culture, Looma probably bulked up from lots of fighting. Heck, we later see that the Tetramand marriage customs require her to collect offering gifts, so maybe after getting engaged with Kevin she trained specifically to collect her offering gifts.
It actually says a lot that Argit "didn't want to give you up"(Kevin). Like Looma is so dangerous that even sleezy backstabbing Argit didn't want to give Kevin up.
I always thought this episode was way later, post Frogs Of War when Argit had gotten ever so slightly nicer because of that. I guess Looma is that serious a situation for him.
@@yannismorris4772 huh didn't expect any replies but we'll maybe you could be right but the dude littarally said gentleman instead of using a term for all people or something I don't think there's discrimination in the same sense as earth but female warriors definitely tend to be warriors more often then men.
Sudden thought. Think it’s possible they kept the trio 16 because they weren’t sure if they wanted to eventually give Ben Master Control on his 18th birthday like Azmuth promised?
probably, bcz Master Control Ben is too op, he was handling both Vilgax and Kevin at the same time, two of his most strongest enemies back in Classic so imagine how long his battles would last if he got Master Control with OV aliens like Pesky Dust and Gutrot (spoiler alert, the battles would be over instantly)
18:57 i always thought of ben as a sort of freelance agent when it comes to the plumbers. Kinda like a bounty hunter but alligned with the morals of the plumbers. He just is friends with most of the plumbers so thats why he still hangs around the base.
11:54 I've said it before in other discussions about this show, I think this one line pretty much represents everything to like about Ben and Rook's dynamic. It's not quite brotherhood, not quite buddy cop, and it would have been an extraordinarily difficult kind of move for most shows to make. All of their moments together resonate with me much more than either of the main trios because of how casually well written their interactions are.
It's possibly the weirdest thing, after Ben and Looma got engaged, I immediately started thinking of wedding plans, the venue, catering, seating arrangements, it's just plain crazy.
@@matijasostojic4288 I was imaging it being held on Khoros, picture this, a Norse Viking setting, outside, disregard that fact that it's in a desert, traditional dress attrite, drums and horns in the background, Ben and Looma underneath a archway made of strong branches, with Looma aimed with a battle spear in one hand, it's dawn, the sun is a perfect red, and standing before them, friends and family of both the bride and groom. After the ceremony, we move on to the reception, inside Gar's palace, huge ballroom, seating arrangements are as followed, Ben and Looma will be seated with both Gwen and Rook on Ben's side, while bridesmaids of Looma's on her side. Ben's parents, Grandpa Max and Gar will be seated at the same table, next to Looma and Ben's table, while others will be spread out among the room, the food with consist of the meat of hunted creatures, each from different planets housing the most dangerous alien creatures, cooked with only the best culinary master of alien cuisine, Grandpa Max, and there will also be vegan and vegetarian options. That's kind roughly what when through my mind when I saw the end of the episode, would you say it would've been a good setting for a wedding?
I think my problem is that Kevin got scott-free from Looma and left the problem to Ben. Even worse, Gwen allows it to happen even though he did nothing wrong. Sometimes, what is considered funny is NOT funny.
that's honestly a recurring issue with OV: character doing stupid/bad shit and getting away scott free because humor. Remember, Argit ends up a town hero later on and even becomes PRESIDENT in the future.
TBF the episode just kinda "ended" there. I imagine Gwen didn't stop grilling him when they got home, but the 3 year promised return gave them all a lot more breathing room than they started with so there was little to immediately complain about. This would have been something great to follow up with later (which unfortunately didn't happen as well).
I know you don't really do the chart thing anymore, Kuro, but I do appreciate them so I reviewed your ratings for the first season of Omniverse and where's what I got: Plot - 3.2 Characterisation - 3 Visuals - 4 Importance - 4 Entertainment - 3.2 Average score - 17.4 Not a bad start for Omniverse, right?
Ken could be explained with oh interspecies reproduction does not work naturally and they had to use biotechnology or something and kens humans because he's designed as human.
22:20 Even though having super speed, running in a straight line makes you very predictable for those with trained reflexes, this also happens with Flash sometimes.
Looma's "lower myself to fight a girl" comment is particularly weird when you consider that, as Rook says in this very episode, Tetramand females are generally stronger than males. The only way it kinda makes sense to me is with the knowledge we get at the end that losing a fight results in engagement. So maybe Looma was saying "I'm not so desperate to get married that I'd consider another female."
I've always imagined (and this might be a little headcanon-y) that the female tetramands being pledged to males was more like.... if they can prove themselves in combat, they've proven themselves as a suitable spouse. It's the equivalent of tetramand dating. Rather than they have to fight off a bunch of guys. Which is why Looma appears so on board (beyond this being cultural), she now has a strong partner and together they'll conquer so many enemies together.
Considering Ben turned 17 halfway through OV: OS is set in 2005, AF takes place between December 2009 and December 2010. UA takes place between December 2010 and June 2011. OV (16 year old Ben) takes place between June 2011 and December 2011. OV (17 year old Ben) takes place between June 2012 and December 2012. OS Ben 10k is 30 years old, so it takes place in 2024/2025 (first appearance); and is 42 years old, so it takes place in 2036/2037 (second appearance). Ultimate Ben is 36 years old (as it takes place 20 years after UA), so his future takes place in 2030/2031. Ben 10k from OV takes place around 2032 (because Argit uses that year when they say to vote for him, so Ben 10k from OV is 37/38 years old. The reason for these dates is because: Whereas in Moonstruck, Max said he was Kevin's age (17 at the time), it's mentioned in the ep that Kennedy was president and that the colonel alludes to Kenned's 1962 speech, so Max was 17 between 1962 and 1963. Also considering that Max would be replacing Neil Armstrong in the Apollo 11 Mission, so Max must have been born in the summer of 1945. As he turns 60 in the OS (in the Ben 10,000 ep), then the OS takes place in 2005 and Ben and Gwen were born in December 1994. Note: In Many Happy Returns, Gwen says she is on spring break, however, as the third season of UA takes place after summer, so I assume that Gwen's spring break is early or late due to something that may have happened in college (maybe it's just a schedule mix-up or a problem with some Lucky Girl villain). (this information was based on a theory post on the Ben 10 wiki, which I agree with everything except that OV is not canon, because the episode “Blukic and Driba Go to Area 51”, it was never directly said that the events of the episode are the Roswell Incident, therefore, Alien X recreating he universe did not affect these events. The link to the original post is: ben10.fandom.com/f/p/3072715829280769230)
Thanks to the episode, "Paradox", I thought the classic series took place in 2001. "Factory new from 30 years ago.", "Comes into contact with anything else from 1976.", and the fact AF takes place after a five-year time skip makes me think this.
At 18:13 you mention that Looma's glove suddenly appears when her hand returns from out of frame, but if you look closely at her shoulder when she pulls her fist back it doesn't move when the gloved hand comes back down, so it seems that the first punch was done with her lower right arm and the second punch was done with the upper right arm I believe she's still meant to have gloves on all four of her hands and she had it in the shot just before the close up, so it's still an error regardless, but I figured that it was still worth pointing out
I'm always a fan of seeing alien races have varying figures, I mean unless there's a reason for them looking so copy and pasted, like clones or something
12:45 If you pause at the right time, you can see Bloxx’s omnitrix is a perfect circle as opposed to the Omniverse art style of hexagonal. So that’s another point of evidence for this being a CG model And I also think Gwen’s line of “replace Vilgax with a pompous art history professor” was brought back when Ben and Rook went to Friedkin and thought the teacher was Vilgax in disguise
The "a girl" line fits given the racial context. Female Tetramans are the dominant version of their species. So when she says "girl", referring to "human girl", what she is really saying is "weak lesser being" or "I don't fight pathetic weaklings" since human males tend to be the more dominant one in feats of strength. Given Gwen's social intelligence (and general intelligence), she gets EXACTLY what the princess meant by this which is why she got so angry after trying so hard to be nice and sympathetic. She was trying to be the bigger person only to be put down for it and treated as a lesser being.
@@fightingmedialounge519 Why does proof mater, as lack of proof is by no means proof itself towards any notion nor any counter notion what-so-ever? That's like saying "there's no proof that ben knows the species names of more than 10 of his favorite transformations". Doesn't mean he doesn't. :/
@@Hadeks_Marow you might want to remove a proof there. One, that comparison is pretty bad considering there is proof Ben knows the names of several of his transformation's species. Second, assumptions for shows need to be rooted in actual established information for that series( for instance it's reasonable to presume that Ben knows the names of the species for several of his transformations because we see him learn said transformations proper classifications). To do otherwise is to make baseless assumptions, and those don't have much merit since what you would be doing is describing how you would have written it rather than what is actually written.
@@fightingmedialounge519 Several? yes. Over X amount? Nope. And second: I'm not stating facts. I'm stating plausibilities. :/ 3rd, there is such a thing as "suggestive evidence". And finally 4th, it's not an "assumption" in this case, it's instead a "presumption", as that is the context that you are missing that makes your needless counter come across as somewhat pigheaded in nature, given that this is all theory-crafting based on context clues, as all "assessments" are.
This is definitely one of my favorite episodes from Omniverse, Kevin and Gwen returning was nice and they bounce of well with Rook. Also Looma made for a hilarious antagonist here.
@@Blitz_Blazerweird fact: there initially was a writer's statement saying that Gwen and Kevin "did it" at some point arpund Omniverse. But it was removed, pretty weird but kinda realistic fact.
14:56 there was a similar situation in an episode of the Golden Girls. Rose's cousin Sven came to visit, Blanche and him were talking, and he said that he has no experience with women, Blanche was shocked and said get out of here. Sven took it literally and actually walked out of the house.
10:20 maybe the reason they didn’t do that is because that would make Kevin 18 and Ben and Gwen 17 which some people could take a completely wrong way even if its only a one year difference, because at that point then it would be like “Kevin is dating a minor” which still is a stupid reason but its the only one i could think of
Crash hopper is one of my favorite omniverse aliens- I think his combat is really dynamic because of how explosive his jumps are- but I am already getting fatigued with him being overused in omniverse.
I wouldn't say overused but written wrongly The new aliens could have a better time to shine if the Khyber-Malware arc is done well A predator that counters Ben's aliens will only exist if the species is thriving and the predator is the only thing limiting their population This makes most of Ben's powerhouses compromised which will only allow him to use only a handful of aliens that doesn't have a natural predator allowing more improvisation and the introduction of new aliens due to Khyber not having one to counter with
About the fighting a girl line. I actually can see that happening in real life. There are some woman that see them so far above other woman, that they basically treat themselves like a separate species. The line could have worked better if Looma said she wouldn't fight a girl that looks so weak to emphasize the fact she doesn't view women from Earth as a challenge.
Wow, this was one of those "Better than you remember" episodes. One of the best things about OV, is that it didn't NEAR as many throwaway episodes/characters than the last three series did. It still does, just not to a notable degree.
With Asmuth promising Master Control on Ben's 18th birthday (at the end of UA), I kinda hope they had made him 17 throughout Omniverse - also because it doesn't screw with time and all that - and fulfill that promise at the end of the series to close it off It'd make a lot of sense narratively, imho
Also, Kuro have forgot to point it out I think. But at 31:46, Rook has wrong color near his eyes. Instead of purple its white. And it happens twice, specifically at that angle.
23:43 just a thought but since looma is tetramand and because tetramand’s are about strength what if “girl” in their language one of its meanings is weak and insignificant and that’s why gwen got offended because looma said she wasn’t worth it and that

The trio is just too iconic man but I also love how Rook interacts with everyone so well.
Rook is the perfect addition to the Trio
Gwen is so well rounded as a character. She's empathetic, chill, intellectual, and the most mature one in the room.
True and I do love her for that though she’s bit of a Mary Sue imo 😭
Wish she was lucky girl more tho
The real reason these Breakdowns take so long to make is because Kuro has to think of a new line to say for each OV intro sequence
"Be sure to get a taste, don't let it go to waste, Ben 10" Might be my favorite so far

Glad other people like it as well

I really hope he does it for every single episode
Letting the Omnitrix do its thing is probably the most efficent at this point lol
exactly, plus Ben adapts to most fights with any alien anyway
And with his later revelation that the Omnitrix can give him a better fit alien if it considers it worth it, it makes sense

Right? Shocksquatch jobs a lot in OV, but he made her work for that match.

I honestly think they both look really good in this style. Espeacially gwen.
Though the classic Gwen And UAF Gwen And Kevin Are more iconic to me.
Kevin and Gwen adopting Zed was great. She definitely deserved better than being paired with Khyber who didn’t check to see she was girl.

Like a minute earlier.
Whoops!
I always loved how Rook seamlessly fits alongside Kevin and Gwen through their shared interest (cars for one, magic for the other).
OV four arms entrance in this episode is so badass. OV knew how to make classic and UA aliens first appearances awsome with this and Humungasuar.
His entrance was pretty great
I feel like if you get rid of the moustache on 4arms then he looked good (also liked that you didn't mention xlr8 weird motorcycle helmet shaped head)
I really like OV Fourarms, it's genuinely my favorite design for the character because it represents how Ben uses Fourarms - he's not a Tetramand Warrior, he's a Wrestler.
I completely agree.
you know what, that makes perfectly sense, hope Kuro's sees this as an answer to the design
same, this and OG Four Arms
Rath will later get clothes that also have a wrestling theme, and his techniques already have that
So, let me get this straight, Kevin basically had a fiancée at the age of 14. While in UAF, he was trying to get with Gwen, this really looks even worse on Kevin. How did he keep this a secret for so long?
by being unfaithful
The more I thought about it the weirder this sounds …
I think Kevin, from the jump, knew that this whole marriage thing wasnt happening. And, while it is a douche move, Looma is a nutcase and warlordess, so its not like Kevin marrying her would have been good anyway.
Well the Tetramands said they’d be back in 3 of their years and since Kevin is 17 now, it makes sense that they’re coming to Earth now. Idk why they’re leaving but I think it explains why he was able to keep it a secret and why they weren’t looking for him.
I could believe that at one point he just forgot xd

@@banano2210 I mean that's also possible but he was pretty clear about his betrayals in the past.

Good thought
the entirety of Ultimate Alien and the first season of Omniverse taking place in just 3 months is such a funny image to think about
Ultimate Alien is arguably 6 months
It sounds absolutely INSANE,but I could buy it.
It seems like the writers don't know how months work.
17 would have been better
Its because if everyone was 17, Kevin would be 18, and i dont think Cartoon Network wanted an 18 and 17 year old in a relationship

Or he was temporarily suspended for this mission and was reinstated after the episode.
11:54 I've said it before in other discussions about this show, I think this one line pretty much represents everything to like about Ben and Rook's dynamic. It's not quite brotherhood, not quite buddy cop, and it would have been an extraordinarily difficult kind of move for most shows to make. All of their moments together resonate with me much more than either of the main trios because of how casually well written their interactions are.
their personalities go well together too
It's possibly the weirdest thing, after Ben and Looma got engaged, I immediately started thinking of wedding plans, the venue, catering, seating arrangements, it's just plain crazy.
But... How did it go?

TBF the episode just kinda "ended" there.
She suddenly became my fav with your comment. I dont know why....

Considering Ben turned 17 halfway through OV:
OS is set in 2005,
AF takes place between December 2009 and December 2010.
The reason for these dates is because:
Whereas in Moonstruck, Max said he was Kevin's age (17 at the time), it's mentioned in the ep that Kennedy was president and that the colonel alludes to Kenned's 1962 speech, so Max was 17 between 1962 and 1963.
I believe she's still meant to have gloves on all four of her hands and she had it in the shot just before the close up, so it's still an error regardless, but I figured that it was still worth pointing out

And I also think Gwen’s line of “replace Vilgax with a pompous art history professor” was brought back when Ben and Rook went to Friedkin and thought the teacher was Vilgax in disguise

The new aliens could have a better time to shine if the Khyber-Malware arc is done well
A predator that counters Ben's aliens will only exist if the species is thriving and the predator is the only thing limiting their population
This makes most of Ben's powerhouses compromised which will only allow him to use only a handful of aliens that doesn't have a natural predator allowing more improvisation and the introduction of new aliens due to Khyber not having one to counter with
Crashhopper's real power is getting his ass kicked that's why he's used a lot
About the fighting a girl line. I actually can see that happening in real life.
There are some woman that see them so far above other woman, that they basically treat themselves like a separate species.
The line could have worked better if Looma said she wouldn't fight a girl that looks so weak to emphasize the fact she doesn't view women from Earth as a challenge.
I thought she meant girl as in little kid instead of grown woman

Also, Kuro have forgot to point it out I think.
But at 31:46, Rook has wrong color near his eyes.
Instead of purple its white. And it happens twice, specifically at that angle.
Good eye!

With how Kevin treats his car, that is saying a lot. "With love, care and respect!"

Can neither confirm nor deny

I can confirm im into this
17:14 I was not prepared for that lol
23:43 just a thought but since looma is tetramand and because tetramand’s are about strength what if “girl” in their language one of its meanings is weak and insignificant and that’s why gwen got offended because looma said she wasn’t worth it and that
Really happy this episode got a great score, honestly a really good episode imo
Love this episode
