You did the right thing. Playing to the larger audience to get them to the floor. They may leave early and the young kids will stay longer. It appears you still rocked it. As most DJ's you are a perfectionist. With the SRX828 you were going to make them feel each track you played. Great professionalism.

I had a dad the other day send me a Spotify playlist and said in the email “ we would love to stick to this list. Please run any music you want to play out side of this list by us”.
I was able to send a nice response setting the expectations clear that though I will hit their music (good songs luckily) I do not get permission while I’m playing to supplement a list of his making. Blah blah. He responded well and gave it back to me. At first, I had that handcuffed feeling but was able to work it out beforehand. I have also had it during event so I really empathized with you !

Great vid Terry! Gotta say that for all the issues with hotel design, mixed gen audiences and interfering mothers you Yanks know how to party. Be grateful. For us UK djs, getting our stiffs in the mood, without a tanker of liquor inside them is like trying to wake the dead. May be it's the weather.

I have to say this with some seriousness as a business man and a DJ I love you. It's hard to put talent out there and be accepted by people of different cultures but you do it effortlessly. I started out young hanging out with some of the best as a lighting tech as a DJ I've played hole in wall clubs in Thailand, Spain, Philippines and every thing in between and the most important thing that i learned is I LOVED IT and would never change one thing...accept that time a ladyboy tried to bite me that's a story i'll tell when you get older...Keep doing your thing

loved the micromanaging/handcuffed part of this video. this seems to happen to me at 70% of my gigs. the party planner (or person paying me) says I'm playing the wrong music because I didn't play the bangers in the first half hour of a 5 hour party when everyone's sober & still figuring out which line is for food and which line is for the bathroom.

  • @marioramirez8618

Great gig log Terry looked like a great party I totally get you on that micromanaging stuff
I had a 15th last week where the host came to me and asked me to play something more in the mid 120's t0 130's RPM's at diner time while every one is eating and i looked at her and said do you think somebody is going to get up and dance right now?? and told her i would play something a little more up bit but not dance music until after the presentation. it rely sucks when your gigs start that way; love your gig logs man

Same thing happened to me back in like 2004 or 2005. 40th birthday part/mini family reunion. WIDE range of ages there. The birthday girl (who was the client) wanted me to be her personal jukebox and not a talented, versatile, entertaining DJ. I was at the mercy of her musical whims. I was miserable! lol

cleveland, i have been doing bar and batmitzvahs for years. The mom always wants to micro manage get used to it. But you handled it the same way as i. In the end everyone is happy. I finally changed the time line. During cocktail hour while parents have not entered the room. Its all kids hour and i play all of the kids hip hop rap and i warn any parents in the room, this is an all teen hour. Then we do introductions and prayer, then dinner and etc. I don't let it bother me anymore. i just keep a smile on and rock the dance floor. keep em dancing

lol Yeah that one person wanting to tell you what to play........ it's just a part of the job, 90% of the time it’s a female coming up asking to play what she wants to hear. It really sucks when it’s the client because you feel even more presser to give them what they want since they are paying you. But I really like that phrase you used just trust me!!!!!! Good Job and keep doing your thang bro.

I bought the JBL caster kit and replaced it with the Penn Elcomm W9008-V6 swivels made removable using PE caster plates which did bolt on directly with no modification. This was superior to the JBL hardware, the 4" wheel makes a huge difference clearing cracks, joints, etc., plus they are better quality IMHO. And...you can slide them off easily once you flip it to prevent rattling.

Does it sound pretty even when your on middle of dance floor for bass when u have 1 sub on your left as opposed to on both sides??

    • @ClevelandTerry
      @ClevelandTerry  5 лет назад

Bass is unidirectional, meaning it’s doesn’t matter where you put it, it’s still going to fill up the space. I’ve done single sub set ups many times. The trick is to balance the highs and the bass cab so the sound hits in the same place at the same time. Usually means less output for the highs.

OMG! "Cool Mom's" are the worst! They're thinking, "I want my party to be the freshest, newest and coolest thing since sliced bread." LOL They forget that not everyone at their party has a teenager and keeps up with current music. My parents hated my music when I was a kid. Why? Because they didn't relate to it. They didn't listen to it non stop. They have their own music. DJs have to play a general mix of music. You want EVERYONE to hear a song they love. I NEVER cater a party to only 50% of the guests. Why? Because half the party won't be into it. You can't force people to like what you like. From now on tell your clients to give you a small list of music they like and music they don't like. Then tell them you will incorporate their music into YOUR set because YOU are the professional with years of experience and they don't know what the FU*K they're talking about.

The Persians, Israelis and pretty much all of the Middle Eastern folks (don't get it twisted I love playing for them,,but), always want the music louder or they want to tell you what to do. They complain and boss you around but in the end they love you up,,,HARD. They just have this "need" to complain and control and make you think that you don't know what you're doing. Just like you,, at the end I always have this feeling that it could have been better if they had just left it up to me. Gotta love 'em but it's incredibly frustrating.

Arent you always commenting on how you need to play what the employer wants? I know that sometimes it can hurt the crowd, but its a delicate balance. Maybe the situation would have resolved if the first time she asked you to play 'new' music, you immediately switched to what she knew she wanted to hear and played that for the next 3 tracks. Then go back to doing your thing and see if she is satisfied, feeling validated that you responded to her.

I have heard them full tilt countless times. One of my single powered Yorkville 21 or 18 will be louder and sound better than that jbl any day. I'm not guessing I'm telling you that jbl is rubbish, they'll get the job done but there's much better out there especially at that price point your just paying extra for the logo . The crowd doesn't know the difference but I do.. if your okay with sub par bass and it's making you money why not 🤷🏾‍♂️... I guess 🚮🚮
