While I do not understand exactly why we won't get the short wheel base in the US (it would likely sell well), I do understand the reasons for the LWB version from my own perspective: third-row seating. Please correct me if I am wrong, but the SWB doesn't have the third-row seats as an option.
I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I want a third row for being able to install 3 car seats. 3 car seats across a single row is typically physically tight, and ergonomically horrible for the parent helping to strap their young children into the car. My back has been crying for the past four years loading my boys into my Passat, GTI, and to a lesser degree, the Bolt now.
I only have two kids right now, but this vehicle is my choice if and when we have a third. The SWB would be a non-starter for me.
What? Who is going to clean leafs, trash and mess in the windshield gap? Ridiculous
Sometimes I get the feeling, the VW bus is emontionally more important to Americans than to Germans.
The earlier VW bus from the 50', 60', 70' may have special place in american car culture, but the later model from 80' and today are still on of the most popular van in Europe.
@@jonpetter8921 This could be why Americans might be more excited about the ID Buzz, because we haven't had any good VW vans in so long. (The US did get the VW Routan minivan briefly but that was basically a rebadged Chrysler.)
it absolutely is and that's why it's stupid of Volkswagen to wait so long to deliver it to the USA
In fact no. Germans loved their Combi's and were absolutely nuts about the Westphalia conversions.
This.
I had a 1967 VW Bus when I was attending art school in San Francisco in the mid-70s. This VW Buzz brings back a ton of memories!! Thanks for the tour!
Wow! I hope you bought a run down studio/warehouse in SF back in the 70s. How did art school work out for you?
@@hereigoagain5050 ha! I wish I had. But “starving artist” isn’t just a cliche, you know. My one bedroom apartment on Haight Street was $150/month!
I got my BFA in 1978. I had a tradesman skill (running a printing press) I learned in high school. That paid the rent. Then I went back to school and got a teaching credential (needed the Bachelor’s degree to get that) in 1990, as I wanted to do something meaningful.
I taught elementary school for 30 years. Plus I was an adjunct professor at the local community college (photography) and lecturer at the state university (photography). All of that was a great experience.
A few exhibitions, work in collections, a book, and years of immense satisfaction and challenges creating work.
So, I’d say art school and the BFA proved very useful!
@@ezpoppy55 Outstanding! Sounds like a life well lived.
It’s unfortunate we won’t be getting the “short” wheelbase option. The biggest miss is that we won’t be getting the cargo version. I was really hoping to add one to our delivery fleet. Apparently we dislike wagons, hot hatches as well as cargo vans in North America. 🙄
A friend of mine was ready to buy 3 cargo Buzz’s but now can’t
Chicken tax strikes again.
...and the ID.6 SUV is only available in China.
Well, I think that you American customers just have to make more pressure on your US VW dealers. If the leading board in Germany will recognize that there is a demand for this car, I’m sure they will bring it to the US.
If VW can build them in the states they will be able to make a cargo version.
For now too hard to get chips and batteries. Long wheelbase loaded vans. Is what we will get.
Young, yes, but also nostalgic. Can’t wait to recapture the old van feel. Love the rear wheel drive. Hurry. Hurry, VW.
A crazy comment at 3:20. We're basically teetering on a global recession with cost of living increases never before seen. This winter, some people will be chosing between 'heat or eat', so the comment is thoughtless and unnecessary. EV's are undoubtedly the future in one shape or form, but manufacturers seem to be showboating right now, almost like they want to show what they can do, but not actually make EV's for the masses at prices the average person can afford, and the average person *cannot* afford $70k and up on a car!
Yeah, I completely 100% agree. I was like "WTF are you saying right now?"
I really want one of these (with a 300ish mile range) around 55-60k and I would be happy. I am just worried that the US price of this thing is going to push it out of the relm of comfort when it comes to price
First you skip the line for a Rivian, now you try convincing VW to jack up the price of the van?
Wealth has its privileges. But the Buzz is for older folks with memories, often incorrect, of the original and they have the pay scale to afford it.
He’s completely lost the plot. I’ve found myself watching his videos far less recently.
For real, that was super annoying...
@@davidmccarthy6061 No. we don't
@@mmavcanuck same man... are we just hoping for more EVs for wealthy car collectors at this point?
You asked why a longer base ? Those van were famous for carrying more than 7 people. In order to fit a third raw seat a longer base is needed. Which is great we need a big electric family car. And this one is going to be a big hit for family
I’m excited about the long wheelbase version. I need more room! Three kids and a dog is not easy to carry around in most cars if you have any extra luggage. I have an ID 4 right now.
I really need a third row seat.
When the concept vehicle was unveiled it caught my attention.
I think the changes to the appearance actually hurt it. Volkswagen should've made it look MORE like the classic VW micro-bus.
That VW multi-van you pointed out is definitely something I will have to look into as I prefer PHEVs. Charging isn't readily available for me.
I prefer the essentially unlimited range when you still have a gasoline motor to get you around after the electrons run out and there isn't a public charging station anywhere near.
I think it should be 60K max or it won’t sell due to its smaller size. People who buy minivans in the USA won’t buy something that much, but I am sure those looking for a lifestyle vehicle will.
PacHy Pinnacle starts at $58k.
It's unusual to hear a presenter cheering for a higher price. Let's not forget what the word "Volkswagen" means.
Does MTV still show music videos?
I think Oldsmobile stayed true to its name until the customers died out😜 for Volskwagens for the masses you went to Škoda but they are more premium than some VWs, so now it’s only Seat, which you don’t get in US coz U R not poor enough
@@mtumasz so when does seat come out with there version? ( rhetorical)
Funny that the Spanish version is less than the Czech
@@CHMichael not as rhetorical as it seems. Much depends on the pricing of the Buzz. They might overshoot it like they did with ID cars in Europe imho, and then after the initial buzz runs its course, say in 2025, they might need a cheaper version with the Spanish badge
It's absolutely obnoxious.... "Just charge 100k, wealthy collectors need more!"
'Hell' means bright and 'Dunkel' means dark. Day and night are 'Tag' and 'Nacht'
Genau. And Google Translate is free.
11:22 so it's a removable ice cooler that you can dump the water after the ice melts and can be used outside the van? Nice feature.
should be a Thermoelectric Module equipped cooler; people would buy the Buzz just for that feature.
it has one big flaw, the price... every mini-van that is not electric, is fairly cheap...
the idea that this should be expensive is ABSURD... the original car was a mass product, decently priced... so taking that legacy and turning around and make it the polar opposite is ABSURD..
A Honda Odyssey can run me over $60000 CAD a Toyota Sienna the same.
This VW is an EV yes, but it doesn’t have the fit and finish of a top end Honda or Toyota minivan.
@@mmavcanuck the 2022 Odyssey has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $33,040 USD, The range-topping Elite model is $48,770..
2020 Toyota Sienna L Starts From $31K USD MSRP, now compare this to a Model S/X pricing for starting price.. you cant.. thats double or more then double the price..
@@mrdot1126 agreed the van should be van priced plus 10-15k for batteries, all developments are covered by id3/4/5
@@mrdot1126 You do realize VAT is included in European prices as well as cars just generally being more expensive there. ID.4 77kw is $50k USD there while it’s $40k USD here.
In the UK it starts from £57k
Maybe the longer one for the US will come with 3rd row seating! That would sell really well I think!
I love the idea of this vehicle! I have a Bolt, and love the size for 90% of my life. But on those 10% occasions, having slightly more room would be helpful. That said, I'm not interested in the larger N. A. model, which makes me pretty sad. All the EVs coming out are just too big for me.
All minivans have a third row in US. No third row (longer) and it’s DOA
I agree with jen1sue. I would prefer the smaller one.
@@martyquint right. If I wanted a minivan I'd buy one. I want a hella cute little Buzz!
@@HumbertoYi0878 True, when most Americans are cross-shopping minivans the SWB version would quickly be passed over because of no third row. But, the SWB version would be a great alternative to many of the SUV/CUVs that people are buying. I think that VW doesn't want to spread itself too thin with EVs in America for now - they are being rather stingy (I would much prefer the ID.3 over its fatter sibling ID.4, but alas).
A third row of seats would be the motivator to swap to this from a Bolt, I have a lot of friends and I like playing chauffeur when we go do things, but right now I'm capped on seats.
We need a full glass roof, air suspension, and the 4x4 chops of the original Touareg L7, i.e old combi Syncro. Rear seats should captain chairs that rotate, slide front and back, and have leg rests. All that can be moved around on a floor track system.
Such "fun" versions are coming later, at least that's what rumours say.
It's a symbol of family life: fun together, picnic, camping ...
Why don't they let you drive one? it goes on sale in one month.
There is a launch event in August in Copenhagen DK where journalist and video channels have been invited to, e.g. Battery Life. They will test drive the ID-Buzz but must only publish review from a certain date. This so all publications are on equal footing.
Our family is all electric except for a wheelchair accessible Dodge Grand Caravan for my son with cerebral palsy. I wish VW could fit this out for accessibility, and I would love to have it. I think it is a cool vehicle.
Same with the Tiguan...why are we stuck with the long wheelbase?
I can't wait to get the cargo version of this, so I can camp in.
There is also a camper version coming
If you are in the US, then that's not gonna happen. The cargo version will not be sold in the US.
Yes, Congress needs to eliminate the chicken tax that has been in place since the 1960’s that prevents us from getting two seat vehicles from overseas
In Norway the price start at 494 500 NOK. 49 450 $. No VAT.
yep, VW isn't the people's car anymore...
Will the rear seats go fully flat so that you can deck it out for camping? I'm looking forward to trying to fit it out like the old Kombi vans.
In Germany its only 65 000 euro ish. Which is about the same in dollars
Im not sure why America needs a bigger version than this? This seems like the perfect size.
It's a huge bummer they're stretching it for the US market. I want with these proportions.
Best car review channel on tube right now.
To me the buzz is the most interesting EV that we can order right now! Big inside, not to big outside and not an SUV. We had a Multivan when I was a kid and it was the best Family vehicle ever!
Waiting for the AWD, but how do you bring your skis without becoming too tall to enter many parking garages?
love your enthusiasm for EVs
I would get one for a local short trip fun car. If the price isn't crazy high. But I'm sure it will be. Great channel.
I can see initial sales of this being strong with people that have an emotional connection to the VW Bus, but honestly the interior seems very low rent, at least in this review, especially in that price range. I don't see this being a good seller once the enthusiasts have theirs. Minivans need family useful innovations, not just big cubic feet.
nobody with an emotional attachment to VW bus, will be able to afford this.
Yeah, it is a disappointment design-wise... VW has been working on this before it was an EV and this is what they decide to produce? Maybe a company like Apple could buy them that has more knowledge about design and software that needs manufacturing car knowledge... might be a good marriage. Except you have German regulations etc... aka Giga Berlin, I not sure anyone will build another plant or start a company in Germany.
@@rockstertx interesting perspective. Germany is still the industrial powerhouse of Europe, despite high standards of environmental protection (regulations) and workers rights. And American car companies are not famous in Europe for good design, Tesla being an exception.
@@GaiaTheorist82 you’re kidding right? This will go off with the boomers who drove them in the 60’s and 70’s and are desperate to reclaim some of that lost youth.
They are the exact audience with an emotional attachment who can drop the money on this thing.
There's tremendous pent-up demand for a VW Bus and no similar EV options so they'll sell a lot, if they don't price it too high and avoid battery or other issues.
Own a Id4. Love the look of the buzz. Won't buy another VW because they don't update their software. Over a course of a year I've had many software issue, none that have left stuck on the side of the road but super frustrating. I still have to swipe to charge at a Electrify America station. Don't get me started on the VW phone app, I can't even use it to lock or unlock the car or see if its locked or unlocked. Their route planning navigation is terrible. The backup camera is blurry. Was locked out of the phone app for the last 10 days then miraculously it just starts working again. So if you think Volkswagen will update their software don't hold your breath. You would think with all the new electric car competition out on the market that they would be on top of these things.
In the UK we can now configure the ID Buzz for pre order. The prices quoted are £57000 to £63000 which equates to $68000 to $75600 at todays exchange rates.
Good video. Does it come with v3 software, does it have rear speakers?
VW are cutting corners with ID series. Can it tow, can you fit a roof rack?
I cannot wait to see it, but definitely not paying 80-100k as you said. Especially when ford lightening pro also has 100kwh battery and selling for 40k with AWD
A couple of comments, not everyone can afford a $90-$100K vehicle, so that is bad advice to VW to price it that way. I hope the EV auto manufacturers make electric cars cheap enough for the masses, lower price is always better. Also, the current situation with chip shortage(s) is not the big issue anymore, I see thermoplastic supplies being limited (injection molded components) and other commodities that suppliers are having problems obtaining as well as getting employees is a bigger problem. I also think VW should market both wheel bases here in the states. Great review, keep up the good work!
watch the production videos for the Buzz; not so many humans needed...
@@rossr6616 I am more concerned with the suppliers to VW...I was (owned a manufacturing company in Texas and Slovakia) a Tier 1 & Tier 2 supplier to the Automotive Industry, it was tough even long before Covid...
my favorite feature about van is you can access the back seat from the front which this buzz offers.
Dimmable light! Yes guys that rocks!
Great video. Can’t wait for these to replace some of the suvs and crossovers we see in the US.
Congrats on 100k subscribers! Well-deserved with the quality content you put out!
VW ID Buzz needs to implement Vehicle 2 Load tech (like KIA/Hyundai)! Will make this the ultimate camper!
Why is the windshield set back from the ‘hood’ so far?
Crash protection regulations I assume. The original VW Bus was different - or as Jay Leno put it: "You will be the first person on the scene of the accident"😃
@@robertkempe2730 But the Multivan / Transporter has less distance to the front _and that_ has an ICEngine ahead of the driver.. I would assume it's the best they could do with the MEB platform - so, meh.
Definitely needs to have an option for regular double doors on rear instead of the lift gate.
The cargo version has double side-hinged doors. It will be available in Europe and other parts of the world, but it won't be coming to the US.
I'll be wanting one with a little bed and table. Hope they offer this!
What will be the dimensions of the longer US model?
@11:21 "the pedals are exactly where you expect them to be"...on the floor where your feet are? 😀
Congrats on the 100K!!!
I would love one of these if they can tweak out some of the bugs... software included but if they are gonna charge more than $50-60k they can keep it. There are better vehicles available now and coming soon... VW get your act together.
They are 60K € (including 21% VAT) to start with in Belgium
With $ and € parity
No, don’t make them expensive. A $80-$100k VW Bus is an affront to what made these iconic in the first place: affordability.
Why is there a bench in the back? Why are these not separate seats?
I sure wish we could get the short wheelbase in the US
As much as I love the Buzz, the size of the dual A-pillars is going to be bad at intersections for visibilty, just like my Bolt is now. Pretty much on par with most modern cars with the windshield extending that far forward though.
I think the reason the US version will be long wheelbase is because minivans here basically has to have a 3rd row. I would certainly want a 3rd row if I ever get one of these.
Agree 100% would get a lot of different vehicles if it doesn’t come with a 3rd row. Really should be AWD also if it was to come with a 3rd row.
I would like to have the 2nd and 3rd row completely removable.
@@rzu7120 like most vans yes
Plus Americans are a plumper size so 3 probably won't fit arse to arse in either row
Man, they should give the option for SWB/LWB. That length of 186” isn’t bad at all!
You need the long wheel base for frequent 6+ passenger comfort PLUS cargo for larger families and sports where parents car pool kids ( Big reason to get a VAN. over a crossover SUV)... Second is they already announced the camper version is coming that one needs room for the pop up bed, kitchen and cargo.
We're going to get the THREE row version in the US, not just the short-wheelbase 2 row version. We're also apparently NOT getting the cargo version, which is a BIG mistake. Perhaps VW doesn't want to compete with Ford's E-Transit. Is this going to be built in VWs Chattanooga production plant? 🤔
Would be nice to have a 7 seat version with some storage space. That's probably why is bigger in US. version. Love the Look! I'd love to get one! I'd daily drive it over my Jeep hybrid!
I do want that glass ceiling so we can see the stars when camping :)
The old style radar doesn’t get covered with slush so easily and I bet it has a heater. In my ID3, the radar is behind a body colour panel without heating.
Kann der Buzz auch fahren ??
Considering how much the transporters are selling for in the uk in the “lifestyle trim” I think that they should make it 200kwh and sell it for 90k and people will still buy more than VW can make
I was hoping the front would be shorter. And I really hope they put in a glass ceiling at some point. I want to be able to go lay in the back and look at the stars.
If they make a camper van version, we will come. And so will hoards.
I don't want a long-wheelbase version; I want THAT!
Love the interior looks so fresh. Not so sure about the screen and hope it has one petal drive that's a deal breaker for me since I have it and love it already on the Chevrolet bolt.
I have a 2023 Bolt EUV and can't believe the VW EV's don't have one pedal driving.....
it should be able to fit a 4x8 sheet of plywood and be able to remove the seats. Otherwise its a station wagon and not a van
No ground clearance?
Will they be selling the cargo version in Mexico? Would it be possible to buy one there and drive it across the border?
What happened with the battery problem?
While im not a future customer of the ID buzz...its a cool vehicle. I hope its a huge sales success
This may be the most practical EV so far. People mover and utility for living space and camping.
I think they nailed the look and it seems like it will be practical. It looks like it has the same infotainment systems and steering wheel controls of the ID 4. That’s too bad. Who doesn’t like a volume knob? Hopefully the build quality will be better than the last generation of VW beetles. I’d want AWD and more horsepower. Not necessary of course, but that’s what I’d want. : )
Great video because of the excitement! I do wish someone would fold the back seats down with the add-on accessory platform in a video - I think it allows for a long enough flat surface to have a "bed" in there. For me, I don't need all the bells and whistles of a camper to go camping and I know this isn't a camper, but if it's possible to sleep in there and easily buy a platform/shelf (and not have to custom make your own), then that would make it totally worthwhile for me (was originally hoping for the rails, captain's chair swivelling, and table shown in the original concept vehicle). Because it's electric, I wouldn't spend more in gas/create more emissions while doing my city driving in a bigger-sized vehicle. It will be so unique in Canada - not many electric vans.
I like how they integrated the front-facing camera down low on the front window. Too many newer cars have so many sensors in front of the rear-view mirror that it noticeably reduces forward visibility.
I just read there is a place in California working on a Subaru power transplant available probably within months of the ID Buzz arrival.... lol I like the concept, German built you can be sure it is trouble plagued... Ill go for the Subaru powered VW
Chesapeake Climate Action Network Action Fund did a good job on that tailgate.
When it's open, it's a nice sunshade.
Looks pretty solid. It was hard to tell, is there a 3rd row of seating in these ones?
Does it come in red?
It's not the only one electric van. You have Vito from Mercedes and Boxer from Peugeot on the European market allready. The design is really cool (speaking of VW) but the tech is already outdated. The lack of competition is his only chance to thrive.
No one paying 100k for this. Shouldn't you be a proponent of lowering ev prices? Very disappointing.
Agree 100%!!!!
Yeah that comment came off real elitist.
Like the concept but the price is way to high. I will wait for the competition or I’ll go hybrid. I hate to say that but at $90 to $100,000-no way.
My wife is sooooo stoked to order a Buzz once available. I’m telling her it will likely be $80K start price but I guess we will see.
$80k will almost definitely not be the starting price in the US. Definitely less.
I hope to see it at about 44k
It's cool, but I was much more excited about the design of the concept vehicle. They watered it down too much. 😕
are you thinking the "California"? model.
Hoodie / skate shoes/ hiking pants/ beard/ nerd glasses ! Everything covered.
99.9k subscribers!!! C’monnnnn almost there!!
Excited about the evolution of EV's finally hitting Vans. Not so excited about the excessive Price. Don't worry, the Chinese are coming, they will produce a similar copy, at approx 20% less. Perhaps the Chinese manufactures will force VW and others to offer competitive priced options ?
So what EV car is actually on a dealer lot available for sale today at mrsp? That’s what I need to know!
It should be expensive? That's what you want?
He explained it in the video.
@@davidclark538 not well... I don't think the majority of consumers are cheering for more collectibles for the wealthy. Nobody that loved the original, would be able or willing to pay that. This is like VWs joke on their own former customers...
Wish they did some retro designs in the interior as well.
The Long Wheelbase is for the third row of seats
No third row seating?
This should be a top-seller in USA and Canada. It's Achilles heel is the tech. If the hardware is decent, then VW should be able to push software updates later. The interior looks much better than early pre-prodution ones. Thanks Kyle!
Love it! I do wish we had the option of the smaller Euro versions here in the US.
Uh, DON'T give them ideas on the pricing and that they should charge MORE!
I'm waiting this car for years. This one will be the best ev i guess.
