@@TampaSkwad imo.. 30hz and lower is Way too low for bass, even a low B0 fundimental from a 5 string is still just above that threshold, ur not gonna get any useful frequencies from there. in rock music typically anyways, the bass is actually highpassed a bit to leave the sub area for the kick drum, staying in just the bass area. (unless youre making say, dub lol)

Ideally, each mic will only capture the sound of the Tom upon which they're set - but both mics are actually gonna capture a bit of the other Tom next to it. And a little bit of all the other drums in the kit - even cymbals. The amount of sound from an off-axis source (ie a sound you DON'T intend to be the primary signal captured by a mic) is called bleed. It won't be super loud in the recording, and there are methods audio engineers can use to minimize bleed. But yeah, this mixing is stellar. You may not immediately appreciate it, but this is some VERY good work.

The bass guitar and drums sound unreal...you can just hesr all the good engineering applications being put to use for the recordings, such as different sized rooms

As a guy who's spent an entire summer making beats with sampled breaks from a pack called 'All The Breaks' , I can confirm that the sound of it is accurate af. Put a tiny bit of tape saturation, some vinyls crackle, turn it into mono and you got a break from the 70s straight up.
Very impressive. I am fascinated by the trends that occurred in the 70s that made music sound so special for the decade. I hope to see more musicians learn from what I consider to be the golden age of small group music.
Have you ever tried the Geoff Emerick Mic technique? The one used on the last Beatles albums. Which is condenser under snare, and dynamics under toms not above, 2 kick mics, and a dynamic overhead, which I switch out with a condenser. It’s a cool sound, gives you a paper thin snare good for singer songwriter music.
@@BionicHorseBeats Using better mics do though. They had u67s and 47s, and a lot of other good mikes like rca and coles. And chose a d19 as an overhead. A 47 would’ve easily beaten it.
It seems like vulfpeck has also been able to simulate a similar muted sound with their use of their compressor. Cool to see you can do it by muting as well
More perhaps the 60s sound, more specifically the Ringo sound, but the 1970s didn't really mute their drums like this, or at least not as often nor to this extent. In fact, it was the 1970s that took off all the cloth lining after the 1960s. It was just the careful and subtle mic placing on the drums that gave the drums that soft sound thus to be as equal to the mix as possible. It wasn't until the gated reverb sound of the 1980s where it was clear that people wanted big bombastic drums that could fill an arena. Also a factor was the tightening of the heads. Tighter heads allow for a quicker and shorter hit with very little ring.
There's no hard and fast line with drum sounds between decades haha! I just called it this because it's more 70s inspired than anything ... not literally claiming this was the only drum sound to exist in the 70s. There are so many incredible and varied drum sounds from each decade that all existed concurrently. Think of Motown, Muscle Shoals, Stax, The Wrecking Crew, The Beatles, Blue Note, and early Zeppelin all making classic recordings in the 60s - all with their own unique drum sounds! Still blows my mind.

Dudes would stuff pillows in their drums to get that sound back then (I was gigging on bass in '77) - this seems like an easier solution, but you lose some of the stick rebound.

Has more to do with how drums are recorded. The sound of the 80s was born out of compression and noise gate. That's why it sounds unnatural.

As a Guitarists (with a capital G apparently) I dig it!!! Especially the skins, I never seen any drum skins with a design on them before. Sounds really good Dude 👍😎.
Dudes would stuff pillows in their drums to get that sound back then (I was gigging on bass in '77) - this seems like an easier solution, but you lose some of the stick rebound.
The fabric on the heads being the easier solution? What even is that? I kinda wanna try it out

bonhams kit was definitely more open and punchy especially his bass drum, doubt he put much muffling on his compared to this but idk
