In the Witcher 3 there is a free DLC mission. It entailed the titular Witcher, Geralt, approaching a village who had put up a job posting needing someone to rid themselves of a murderous Cave Troll.
The villagers told Geralt that the Troll killed five of them, in a nearby cave.
Geralt went into the cave, and the Troll…was amicable to discussion.
As it turns out, the cave was the Troll’s home, and not only were the villagers breaking and entering into the Troll’s home, they also attacked the Troll! The Troll only attacked after giving multiple warnings, and allowed the rest of the villagers to flee to safety.
Why do I bring this up? Let me tell you another story. There was once an Ice Troll, minding his own business. He had just suffered the horrible company of Orcish house guests, and their leader vandalised his dining table with some plot-hole ridden sigil. But that wasn’t the end of the poor Ice Troll’s troubles, for then a group of elves forced their way into his home and broke down his door. The Ice Troll, rightfully, defended his home, only to be murdered in literal cold blood. His killer didnt even look him in the eyes when she murdered him.
And the killers name was Galadriel.
This Ice Troll didn’t have a Geralt to speak up for him.
    Remember the Ice Troll, 2022

I kind of disagree. The Elves did spend a fair bit of the First Age acting pretty shitty to each other, both in Valinor and in Middle Earth, even if it only rarely devolved into Elf on Elf violence. The video lists several instances.
Having said that, one of the things I thought Peter Jackson caught quite well was Galadriel as quarter-Vanya, since her grandmother was not of the Noldor. The Vanya always seemed to me to be far more ethereal than either the Noldor or Teleri/Sindar somehow. Needless to say, we've got none of that in what Amazon is doing.

I will never complain about the Tolkien estate not selling rights to his works ever again
Tolkien gave us his beloved languages, that developed in a diverse, culturally rich world that is similar, yet unlike ours. One of his making, describing the nature he loved and hated to see destroyed, one in which magic is steadily fading and will disappear.
Then he wrote a story into this world he developed until his death.
No specific real live politics concerning human interaction, no allegories, it's mostly timeless concepts
(His love for Nature and dislike for its destruction is however quite clear to see on almost every page)
He did not even expect others to share his interest in this world and wrote it for himself and was gladly proven wrong when his books were published.
It shows courage and cowardliness, honesty and deceit, prejudice and open-mindedness, life and death, mistrust of strangers finally leading to cooperation, hope yet no certainty, etc.
All universal concepts in a setting that isn't our modern world or even a 1:1 representation of our past, merely inspired by it to create what he was looking for in english folklore.
It simply is HIS and it should not be disrespected by people claiming to know better/ to be able to "fix" Tolkien's Middle Earth so that it can be like our world.
They don't even care about his story, only how they can use a semblance of it for their agenda, their messages crammed into his independent world to highlight and to influence opinions in a way he did not intend
    It's not wanted or needed!
And when we say exactly that, they use stigmas to belittle our opinions and paint us as small-minded bigots.
They ridicule that we care about a literary masterpiece to such an extent, (tell us to get a life and basically to stop caring about it at all, because it isn't real, it doesn't matter what they do to it)
Instead of listening to our criticism about how they misrepresent and change things that are not necessary, they say we aren't welcome in the fandom anymore.
They are drawing lines to defend a story that isn't Tolkien and claim it's the new "fixed" Tolkien that's open to all....and don't see the irony of that statement, don't mention they mean open to everyone that agrees with their point of view.
Someone who does not like it, for whatever reason, is apparently against them and therefore on some level X-phobic/-ist, etc
His story was already translated to dozens of languages, well received all over the world, simply appreciated for what it is.
Now they are trying to claim it wasn't so and that they are the only ones able to do make that happen.
That some people could not truly enjoy it before because of the creator of the entire world and story.
It's sad...and I will never complain about the Tolkien estate not selling rights to his works ever again.

      I agree.
But Simon Tolkien is now chief executor of the estate.
Christopher never wanted Simon to be the chief executor precisely bc he knew Simon would monetize anything and everything.
It was a serious enough conflict to cause a rift in the family that lasted decades
But Christopher, guardian of his father’s works, did not bend.
It was Simon that pushed back against Christopher’s lawsuits against Warner Bros for the Jackson trilogy.
Personally I thought Jackson’s adaptations were great and tried to adhere to the Tolkien as best they could.
But the point here is that Simon didn’t want Christopher to sue Warner Bros via the Tolkien estate bc it would diminish their ability to sell the rights to Tolkien in the future.
Simon has always been bitter and jealous of his grandfathers success. Resentful.
He stated Jackson’s adaptations were ‘almost too faithful’. What?
Simon Tolkien is the reason Amazon is getting away with abandoning the lore.
The Tolkien estate has the power to veto almost the entirety of the show. They had the power to veto anything that changes the existing lore. Which is everything at this point.
But bc Simon is at the helm, Amazon knows they’re free to do as they wish.

Remember that scene when the narrator tells the story of Elves sailed from Valinor to ME to hunt down Morgoth, the camera pans from Valinor in the left to the right and showing ME continent, they should have shown a much bigge ME map with Beleriand in it ( The western part of ME), fans who knows the lore and read the books would know that, most of Beleriand eventually sank into the sea during the War of the Wrath, when the Valar sent a massive army to defeat Morgoth for the final time.

@@GeorgeTheGiantSlayer Some of their staff writers came from Star Trek Discovery (etc) and so may have been influenced by that well-loved Star Trek movie #2: The Wrath of Khan which was known for Khan's obsessive quest for revenge. Khan was EPIC in that movie. Khan's actor was more charismatic than Morfydd though, so Morfydd is at a disadvantage because the obsessed character also needs to be likeable in the modern media climate. Unfortunately, Morfydd and the writers didn't flesh out a canon Galadriel, so I was unable to transfer my affection for the canon Galadriel-Kate onto the non-canon Galadriel-Morfydd.
I'm patiently awaiting for the screenplay writers to make the merchandising mistake of dressing up Morfydd in various clothing so that they can sell them at dept stores. As soon as Galadriel steals more clothing from the Numenorian houses, maybe the writers will make the mistake of having her wear goth clothes. Then instead of Morfydd, I can call her MoreGoth.

Not only have they given a false narrative to both Galadriel and Finrod but, by extension, mocked the heart of the legendarium with the Beren/Luthien/Finrod story. Secondly, they seem to have completely undermined the Ban of the Valar and given agency to the elves to actually make the decision to return to Aman (and Círdan, who understands and oversees the process more than anyone else is NOWHERE to be seen). Debates on Jackson's faithfulness to Tolkien aside, the aesthetic created by those artists previously mentioned, instantly transports the viewer to a world that is timeless in it's beauty and equally majestic in scope. One particularly rancid Easter Egg George seems to have missed came at 27:45 of Episode I. "Nori" is referred to by her full name of "Elanor Brandyfoot" by her (I think) step-mother Marigold. When I saw/heard that, well, my eyes crossed.
First, "elanor" was the name of a flower in Sindarin, meaning "sun-star." Did the pseudo-Hobbits know Sindarin? Don't think so. Second, the flower did not grow wild, as best I can tell, outside of LothLorien, though the Wiki says it was also planted on Numenor. It was certainly unknown to Hobbits, of that much we can be sure.
Finally, and most importantly, Elanor was the name of Sam Gamgee's oldest child. A child Sam an his wife planned on naming Frodo if it was a boy. (See The Grey Havens, Return of the King). So, yep, Elanor is literally a stand-in for Frodo. Maybe this is a stretch, maybe this is me being all Alex Jones, but, c'mon. They could have named her anything, but they chose that? To my mind this goes beyond incompetence and enters the territory of malice.
As an aside, the only video I've seen mention this was the Legendarium Podcast. And he didn't explain why this was so bad, he just mumbled something about not being crazy about this, without any further explanation. (He is, unfortunately, generally a fan of the series. I agree about Arondel. He actually held himself like an elf would, though he did not look like one. Shame, really. He could've made good a different character had this been done properly.
Everything else was just bland, generic fantasy stuff with a dash of Tolkien here and there mostly unrelated. Bleh.

This series is bad D&D fantasy with some Tolkien names and places. They did exactly what you are not supposed to do. They created a series which doesn’t appeal to everyday people and is rejected by the real fans. Many thanks Jerb for sharing your thoughts. Have a phenomenal day!

Let's rewrite some lines of the show to make some sense out of it :
"Do you know why the rocks sink and the boats float? Because the rocks are still full of sorrow; so high and strong were they wrought by the Valar that they wilt never recover from their fall in the hands of Melkor, while the boats have an everlasting wish to join the stars and one day, mayhap one might set itself among the brightest."
I'm by no mean a writer and is by no mean skilled at it, but I think this already make more sense than the one from this show...

Excellent use of "mayhap"! Catweazle used that word a lot! I love Catweazle (70s TV show in the UK), in fact The Meteor Man (Gandalf/not Gandalf) reminds me of him a lot. Except Catweazle is very funny, original, and full of charm and character.

I've been watching it to give it a chance on a friend's prime account since he is watching it anyway. There are moments where it looks like they are about to get something right or start a compelling story line only to toss it away with something stupid. The idea of halbrand being Sauron roaming around middle earth scoping things out trying to figure out who to use for his ends seems interesting. But it looks like they are going to make him a lost king Aragorn knock off.

    • @GeorgeTheGiantSlayer
      @GeorgeTheGiantSlayer  Год назад

You could be right Christopher about Halbrand. But everyone I have spoken to keeps insisting he is Sauron before he unveils himself as Annatar. at this point anything is possible with Payne and McKay. They have created such an utter catastrophe. There were moments, when such as yourself, I thought oh, wow, this is about to be correct and good. And then a breath later, nope, just more desecration.

The troll fight scenes comparison is spot on lol....
In cave troll scene from PJ FoTR, it took 1 wizard ( a Maia), 2 men, 4 hobbits, 1 dwarf, and 1 elf to bring down the cave troll. All took part and work together as a team, each contribute in some way and it paid off at the end. It was an intense scene, and glad to see even Legolas didn't solo kill the troll, but manage to land a killing blow at the end
In snow troll scene from Amazon RoP, you only need one Mary Sue Galadriel to save the day, she doesn't need her other elven warrior companions to help her, since they are all so weak and useless during the fight. Yeah the suppose elite and seasoned elven warriors that Galadriel bring to hunt down Sauron, if they can't even put a dent on the troll how would they even suppose to beat Sauron lol. I mean Tolkien described Elves as agile, nimble and light on their feet, clearly the could've at least dodge some of the troll attacks, but apparently they couldn't since they are just human with pointy ears
That scene could've been better, if there is nobody but Galadriel alone by herself , since she doesn't need help from anyone, she is a strong warrior Elven pricess lol. 😂😂😂
