At every turn, the show runners' claims of loving the source material and respecting Tolkien has been proven to be complete and utter horseshit. They, and everyone else involved, wouldn't know Tolkien's writings if you beat them over the head with one of the books. They may think they're making a timeless story, but by adhering to modern political nonsense, all they're doing is making it more dated. Decades from now, people will continue to return to Tolkien's works, as well as the Peter Jackson films-long after the utter shite that is the Rings of Power has faded from everyone's minds. People will always return to the source material these clowns want to erase, not just because they remember them, but because they're worth remembering.
er will say jacksons films were just as bad.....lotr trilogy ok story bit changed due to budget constraints....the hobbit..wtf 3 films padded out and whole bloody history changed.....
@@dussel69deboath61 The hobbit was bad because of meddling by Warner Brothers, who insisted that certain scenes were inserted regardless of whether the Director wanted them or not, among other things.
@@dussel69deboath61 Personally, I think the Hobbit films get dunked on *way* too much. Are they perfect? No. But as bad as Rings of Power? C'mon dude, don't you think that's over exaggerating _just a little?_
@@dussel69deboath61 :) Tell you more - those who were groomed as children by groomers, instead of being raised by family of loving parents, wouldn't be able to tell the difference between Tolkien's books and amazon frass.
The insistence of pushing "modernity" into Tolkien displays a complete misunderstanding and desecration of his works. Tolkien's Legendarium was an ode to the past, to simpler times in way, and of cycles of greatness, lust for power and vengeance, falls from pride, rebuilding, and ultimately hope reborn through humility. Tolkien spent his life building it, and put incredible, deep thought into every single aspect of it. Female characters actually had quite a bit of agency - most of them were wiser and more humble than the men and hence skipped to the happy ending, which is why they had a lesser part in those cycles (e.g. the female elves mostly stayed with the Valar). Cultures weren't mashups of everything under the sun - they were distinct, with differing values, settling in different places, and interacted and sometimes clashed with each other (e.g. the Noldor and Teleri). Tolkien put the work in to explain "this is how we got here". And it pays off with a mythos unparalleled by by any "content" today that's being rammed through on a timeline to pump out to the consumer. Everything from what the showrunners have shown us to what they are telling us, shows that they simply don't understand. Tolkien's themes were bigger than allegory - it was about humility, about the dangers of pride unchecked, about mercy, about love, about courage, about sacrifice, and about redemption - values which will remain forever timeless.
That´s the problem with narcissist, they live in their own bubble leaving no room for empathy or self reflection and can´t even understand or accept that Tolkien´s creation was already a timeless fantasy world. This is a piece of art, a fantasy world made to ESCAPE FROM REALITY - for fans and also for Tolkien himself. And that´s the biggest issue, cause by forcing modern politics into it and by making middle-earth look more like our own, they completely ruin the magical vibe. This abomination will end up being another woke series with no soul, just cosplaying middle-earth characters.
Exactly. Anyone who says it "needs to reflect our world" should be fired on the spot. If these people are so obsessed with modern day representation they should have gone in to the business of making documentaries.
Tolkien created this “reality”, a world that stands timeless because it is not in time, our time anyway. Scholars will now say there are paralels with his time, events….world war. Forget about that. Profesor created a world with its own rules, species, languages, history, everything. He gave it to us so we can escape into diferent, other i would say better world. I used it all the time, still using it. And it works because its a unbelivable masterpiece, life work of a genius. Art can only be created with pure honesty…
Yes! Yes! And Yes! The Professor's themes impart hard fought wisdom and tempered experience gained from the war, love, loss, from his childhood, his expertise in philology, Nordic cultural tales, from linguistics and the poetry of his imagination, which he imparted as a gift to England and bequeathed to the world that would both remind us of a simpler time and warn of us of the many that seek to pervert the natural harmony of life for a quick fix of short sighted of vision. From such grand themes such as immortality versus the gift of man (death) to the value of camaraderie, loyalty, bonds of fellowship and tragedy. RJres, your insight is refreshing. Thank you for sharing it. Wishing you a magnificent weekend my friend!!

@@gerhardtarmstrongkrausecor8995 Wait .... is Kitkat really advertising that way? This is going to insufferable... exactly what JRR Tolkien didn't want for his work. Commercialization and cheap advertising gimmicks.

Amazon's epic voiceover: "From beloved fantasy author J.R.R. Tolkien comes a story ... that he didn't write ... and featuring characters ... that he didn't create ... in a world ... he developed in books to which we don't have the rights ... ah, crap."
I cancelled Prime, told them it was because of the “desecration of Tolkien”. It hurts my soul, quite literally, what I’ve heard everyone involved with the show say 😔 A “slightly” altered quote… “I’ll tell you the problem with the Tolkien you’re using here, it didn’t take any discipline to attain it. You read what Tolkien had done and you took the next (misguided) step. You didn’t earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don’t take any responsibility for it. You stood on the shoulders of a genius to accomplish something as fast as you could, and before you even knew what you had, you altered it, and screwed it, and slapped it on anything to whore it to people who know nothing about it…” 😢
The only reason I havent cancelled yet is Im doing it as soon as Rings of Power is released and if I get asked for feedback I will say its because of their desecration of Tolkien as until that show is cancelled theres no chance I will be back.
Imagine having the hubris to ever compare yourself to Tolkien. Even the greatest writers on earth don't compare themselves to other writers and least of all compare themselves to Tolkien.
That was the first statement of theirs that made me stop and start digging into them. To believe they could write anything of Tolkien’s equal is simply raw and unrefined arrogance. That boast alerted the world to who they are.
@@GeorgeTheGiantSlayer there were a few red flags to begin with but yeah thats what cemented it for me. The sheer arrogance to even mention their names in the same sentence as Tolkien is so thick you can cut it with a knife. I honestly hope they never work again.
The female characters in Tolkien's world _already had_ agency which was extremely "progressive" for a male writer of fantasy in those days - in one story a female even goes on a perilous journey to rescue her male lover from Sauron's dungeons! Rather than respecting and acknowledging what Tolkien already achieved they changed it all and gave them swords instead and claimed they're being revolutionary by giving the female characters agency Y_Y because a sword means you have agency these days apparently. Rather than being strong despite not having a sword like in Tolkien's originals.
Good point! That's just laziness and disrespect to targeted auditory from "creators". They think that people will not recognize "strong" character unless they carry brutal weapon and are physically beating bigger foes. Pathetic attempt to reach more viewers and get good ratings from critics with zero creativity and effort.
@@scythianking7315 in those days in the fantasy genre? Women were generally only damsels in distress when they were included in fantasy stories at all. this is 80 years ago. Yet Tolkien had two women (Eowyn and Luthien) take on some of the most powerful enemies in the world, and Luthien along with Beren was said to have undertaken the most dangerous and perilous task ever attempted in the history of Middle Earth before or since. Other women were powerful in other ways (ie Galadriel) or there's Arwen who made the choice to sacrifice her immortal life in Valinor to risk the afterlife of Men in the hopes of meeting her lover again. To have progressive ideas means your ideas are "modern" rather than traditional. For the time, when women in the real world had very little agency, he was definitely progressive in the way he wrote his women characters. Or would you use another word? :)
I still fail to comprehend how Amazon manages to produce what appears a flaming pile of sh*t out of what is IMO the gratest work of fiction ever written. Considering the incredible writing by Tolkien, capable actors available(not this Horror Clowns), special effects gurus and unlimited funds available...the perfect foundation of what must have been a easy Grand Slam Homerun, the greatest TV series of all time, past-present future!! It's not like they can't do it... "The Terminal List" was great, "Reacher" was also very good...and those had neither the genius sources or gigantic funds compared to ROP. How can those in charge let this happen?!? Shame on you Amazon!!!
It isn't that hard to comprehend. 1. We have two generations of leftism in schools -- both grade and colleges. Gen Z has been exposed to the greatest amount of woke, PC, boy-hating, identity politics and the lest amount of real-world economics, history, and science, and fact-based teaching in history. And their parent's generation is left enough they allowed it or don't see the issues. 2. You have a massive split in political thinking in the US centered geographically. The coasts are so leftist, they don't have to see it. They live in a bubble. 3. You have the greatest standard of living from 2000 to 2020 in world history centered around the US. So many parents and children grew up never needing to face having to grow up where ideals meet the reality of jobs, food, relationships, etc. 4. Amazon (and many coastal tech and related companies) have a license to print money. Amazon Prime doesn't need to make money -- I use it for the discounts and free shipping. It's subsidized by a massive online sales and delivery model. They can lose a billion dollar on LotR far more than Disney can lose money on Star Wars. As such, it has layers of people who think this and no accountability. This isn't like someone working a garage or factory in middle-America whose boss can say "Stop wearing those political t-shirts in at work or find another job." And the person actually starves or ends up on the streets. People working at Amazon Video, from writers to the board of directors, are immune to consequences because of how Amazon functions.
@@BW022 To add to your comment, Amazon has always been a front, from its inception. What type of company, allegedly for profit, can exist for over a decade from its creation, without making a profit at best? @@BW022 You are absolutely right about everything you wrote! Of course Amazon have no need in making money. The horrible and absolutely irresponsible indoctrination of Gen Z and the generations onwards (even the Boomers and "my" GenX are affected by it) is also a prominent part of the problem amogst many other things. My point is, if I was in a position of power and responsibility in the making of this series, with all of this wealth of source materials and money....I would just make sure that I would make the absolute best series of all time, just like Peter Jackson did with the LOTR movies. Until this day the LOTR trilogy is lauded as a masterpiece of cinematic importance way beyond other fantasy movies and is even among the most favorite movies of casual movie goers, non Tolkien or fantasy fans. I think(in my ignorance) it would be even in Amazons interest as a studio, that they rather make a universally loved masterpiece and not an atrocity of a show that will drive people away and will only cement their status as a incompetent woke clown show. If Amazon wants to pander to those woke coastal dwellers, they should make a quality original series that satisfies all the woke needs...as they do not care for Tolkien anyway( nor do they care about Star Wars, Marvel, DC, and all those other IP's that got destroyed) and don't have any interest to watch RoP. Amazon just threw away the chance to make an everlasting (master)piece of history, but choose to damage the work of fiction most dear to me ...and countless others.
Frodo: I wish the Rings of Power had never come to be. I wish none of this had happened. Gandalf: So do all who live to see such turds, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the turd that is given to us.
*"But....But....TOLKIEN never said there were NOT transgender Unicorns that fart Skittles when they run....so we CAN use it and stay true to Tolkien!!!"*
They will fail miserably at being timeless. You need talent to be timeless . The books will be read forever your show will be forgotten as soon as it completes maybe before.

Not 1 person involved in this abomination of a show has ever red Tolkien and I even suspect that most of them haven't even seen the brilliant Jackson's trilogy.
Actually there were lots of flaws in Jackson's films, most of which centered around the stuff he changed like sending elves to Helm's Deep and making Arwen a warrior. But you could still see, even in the Hobbit movies, that he loved & respected the lore.
@@sunsin1592 och, we should not mention Helms deep 🤣 Legolas on shild... No we should pretend that some things never happend, but overall IT s good film and fine adaptation. And Hobbit - PJ jump into moving train in that one... So i dont blame him for things there
in Silmarillion the text says that Luthien and Beren undertook the most dangerous endeavor in the history of Arda before or since when retrieving the silmarils from Morgoth's crown - which technically makes her the most badass female in his entire Legendarium, no sword required; she used magic. Then you have Patrick McKay on Rings of Power Galadriel: ''she's full of piss and vinegar with a broken sword from all the orcs she's killed'' ..that's a direct quote. sigh.
ALL THIS, Lúthien was ultimate of female "agency" lol, the most powerful elf that ever lived, Galadriel pales in comparison to Lúthien, she smote Melkor into a deep slumber with her voice. daughter to Arguably the most powerful elven king to ever live AND a to Mellion a Miar who basically was a goddess. Who was said to be the most beautiful elf to ever live on Arda, when she diminished the world literally actually became dimmer.
@@kensummers2894 I'm actually glad Amazon didn't get the rights to Silmarillion - they'd have butchered her story!! Probably put her in armour with a mohawk and a big sword, and had her go fight Morgoth alone in hand-to-hand combat. Then realize she didn't even need Beren and tell him to go on his merry way or something. Because apparently the people making Rings of Power think a woman can only have agency if she has a sword and a bad attitude :/
I'm a LotR movie fan and I don't know how much accurate Peter Jackson's interpretations of the characters in the books are, but I've never thought or felt about the female characters as less than equally complex and important than male characters. All of them were described as very powerful and brave women with their weaknesses and own conflicts, so hearing these people talking and acting like they weren't well written complex characters is just annoying as hell. It is all about egos and trying to look morally superior with this new show 😒
He nailed Galadriel (having Cate Blanchett also helped), almost destroyed Arwen giving her not only the role of Glorfindel but also the role of her brothers and turning her into a female elven warrior (you can still see her in the battle of helm's deep in the background in the extended edition i think), and turned Eowyn into what she was not, an heroic figure instead of a tragic one, but the last movie is the worse because it was the one where he most deviated from Tolkien, so it's not his greatest sin.
Because they have to put others down in order to make themselves feel elevated and special. Middle earth has some of thee greatest female characters ever written. Tolkien was writing about empowered females who are resilient, brave, intelligent, beautiful, wise and powerful long before these bozos were born. Again, this only serves to prove they do not know the lore. Thanks for sharing that Jose! This is why we always stand tall against such people. Never bow down! Never bend the knee! Always Forward!!
@@alfgui3295 So the situation is even worst because Jackson already gave Tolkien's female characters more "agency", but Amazon's people are acting like that never happened (if they even red the books) and they are the first ones doing it, adding the pretentious and annoying actitud of "fixing Tolkien's work"
That was a slap in the face to Tolkien, and a shit on the wonderful female characters he wrote. I loved his female characters. Even just in the movies, they were all strong and feminine. They were perfect role models. There was less of them because Tolkien is a male. This is absolutely normal.
´The adaptation suffers a bit from the transition from book to movie - less time and different storytelling medium - but you can still see the empowering rolemodels of Tolkien, even in the movies. Galadriel was so perfect, I always picture her just like that when reading the book. Saying that Tolkien needs more feminism means you haven´t read the source material´, because LUTHIEN!! ELWING!! IDRIL!!
Beren and Luthien. Luthien turns them into a werewolf and giant bat to sneak into Morgoth's Angbad, then SHE puts Morgoth to sleep with a spell so they can recover a Silmaril.
The reality is that while I would love to see well executed and faithful live action portrayal of Tolkien's work, for Amazon it is just not going to happen, because the people who are signing the checks look at entertainment as commodity, and commodity and art are never fulfilling bedfellows.
...And commies just don't get how free exchange of goods and services actually functions. They always seem to blame the people who aren't buying their 'product'.
Sadly, for todays time that is true. Yet, I hold out hope that someone will come along one day with the money and love for the lore who will do it justice. Perhaps someone right now is working on a fan film that puts them to shame. You never know. There is always hope! Have a great night Phillip.
I am playing an elf so I'm researching Native Americans. Instead of, you know, the ACTUAL Norse/Germanic Mythologies that they've come from. The mind boggles. 😬
Even if this abomination gonna flop, I am kinda sure Amazon people won´t stop blaming fans for being toxic and hateful - because they live in their own bubble without any room for self-reflection. Again fantastic work, you are indeed the best slayer on YT :)
Absolutly if it flops it is going to be blamed on the toxic hatful mob instead of thinking for themselves about their own actions. This is amazon after all it is the same thing they did with wheel of time.
You must know all Tolkien fans ( me included) are racists and haven’t understand or read the books. Only the show runners have understand what Tolkien wanted (irony off) .
Absolutely! Because as you so eloquently stated, ‘they live in their own bubble without any room for self-reflection.’ Without reflection they don’t respect. They refuse to do so because then they would have to take responsibility for what they’ve done. And responsibility comes from something you have worked for and earned. They have not. What will ultimately unmask them is not only when they make their first public attacks against the fans. It will be when they need to justify their attacks on the fans by stating they love and honor Tolkien but he wrote the books in an age of prejudice and bigotry. When they slander the Professor to save their series is when you know they’ve officially lost. Lalaith, many many thanks for sharing your insights. Wishing you a magnificent weekend my friend!
That's the Elephant in the room, these two young charming quirky inexperienced yes men it seems to me are likely not making any decisions more serious than what to order for dinner. I know they do a lot of stupid things in the name of pushing their politics or ruining loved fictional universes to undermine the patriarchy, but just look at these two and tell me how stupid you would have to be to trust them with a billion dollar project, even if you are completely delusional you still wouldn't do it. These guys are well paid actors, there to take the heat off of the real decision makers. I don't know it for a fact but it seems obvious to me.
@pachuko But you do know it for a fact, because there is evidence of it. Spewed maliciously from the reptilian lips of the King of Bad Reboot himself, JJ Abrams... "Enough White Comfort". This vile scumbag, is a string-puller in Hollywood who has been guiding these two bootlicks Payne & McKay the entire way. The fatal injection of identity politics into something so pure and timeless as Tolkien, just as that conniving vermin JJ Abrams intends to do with Superman, as begged for by WB/DC. Every step of the way these puppet producers have followed every directive laid out before them by their masters with the Diversity & Inclusion standards mandated by the Arts Academy itself.
I just might manage to drum up the motivation to order some Vagisil from Amazon and cancel the order immediately, citing a Rings of Power as the reason... 😆
So much of this mess is prefaced with, "We think Tolkien would say this or that," ... when we know for a fact exactly what he DID actually say on every given subject. It isn't as if someone picked up a marvelous book which was the only record left by the author; Tolkien left ample notes on his thoughts, his intents, and the views he held on what the future for the works he labored to create should entail. To ignore any of that is equivalent to blatantly ignoring (or flat-out defying) someone's last will and testament.
So right you are Gregory! The Professor's life was his work. He bequeathed it to every generation. Not some megacorp that wants to massacre it. Yet, little will be remembered about Rings of Recycled Fantasy and The Flame Imperishable will continue burning and lighting itself anew in every reader from now till the end of time. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Wishing you a brilliant day! Always Forward!!
This show gets a lot of hate, but it has some great dialogue, like: "You won't have ears tonight, you wont have eyes or a tongue, you will wander the halls of Womandos blind deaf and dumb and all the dead will know, this is Sauron, the fool who thought he'd killed Gollum."
I keep saying, when Gandalf bursts out of Kane’s chest and shouts “are you not entertained? you princes of numenor, ye kings of Endor” I literally had goosebumps. Amazon is truly crafting a timeless classic.
And this moment when Galadriel hangs over the ravine and says "Gandalf told me enough. He told me you killed my brother!!#!" And Finrod comes out of the orc prosthetics and says "I am your brother", I was in tears
It's comical how Galadrial is way older than celebrimbor yet she looks like a 20 year old and celebrimbor looks like a old man. He's an elf why is he aging?????
I've passed this quote several times but it still need to said. "The whole literature of the past will have been destroyed. Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Byron (now Tolkien and soon they'll come for Orwell too)--they'll exist only in Newspeak versions, not merely changed into something different, but actually changed into something contradictory of what they used to be.... The whole climate of thought will be different. In fact there will be no thought, as we understand it now. Orthodoxy means not thinking---not needing to think. Orthodoxy is unconsciousness." Syme from 1984.
An excellent and “applicable” quote as these hack show runners might say. The erasure or alteration of the foundations of our civilization is the ultimate goal and Tolkien is just another target on their list, albeit a significant one. “Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thought-crime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten. . . . The process will still be continuing long after you and I are dead. Every year fewer and fewer words, and the range of consciousness always a little smaller. Even now, of course, there's no reason or excuse for commiting thought-crime. It's merely a question of self-discipline, reality-control. But in the end there won't be any need even for that. . . . Has it ever occcured to you, Winston, that by the year 2050, at the very latest, not a single human being will be alive who could understand such a conversation as we are having now?” -Syme
Great job, George! Once again you really nailed it. And the Vagisil commercial parody is hilarious. Though I wouldn't put it past Amazon to do something just as outrageous! Keep up the good work!

Another _actually_ "strong female character" that people tend to forget about is Haleth. She helped lead her people during very dark times, back when humans had first come to Middle Earth, taking up the role of a leader after her father and brother were killed by Orcs. The Haladin are therefore also known as "the House of Haleth". Morwen mother of Túrin, and his sister Nienor, also have lots of agency, setting out against Melian's advice to find who they (rightfully) believed to be Túrin under a pseudonym. This despite the dangerous time they lived in and the harsh way. Nienor even started the journey in secret, not wanting to leave her mother alone. Ultimately their decision to not listen to Melian proved to be an unwise one, but flaws and mistakes (which everyone in the story of The Children of Húrin has/commits) are what make a story a tragedy. Moreover, after losing her memory and marrying her brother, Níniel as she was known by then, would try to keep him from going out to fight Glaurung's forces, so as to avoid bringing his attention to the place where the Dragon-helmed Túrin but also other humans and elves dwelled. When she couldn't keep him from going out anymore, she, afraid he would die, goes after him. Morwen shows also an important type of strength that is often forgotten or glanced over. This woman lost her first daughter when said daughter was three, her husband during the Battle of Unnumbered Tears - while he was the only warrior to fight til then end and survive, he and his wife would meet only once after that, having lost everything else-, soon after also her son - who she had to give away for protection, sending him on a journey she couldn't join as she was pregnant with Nienor, and who she would never see again, finding only his and Nienor's graves. This type of strength is one that women (and men) all over the world show for the shake of their children, and you will find lots of similar stories from real-life people living in real-life difficult times. These women show strength, courage, resilience, rationality, patience, and many more traits that are worth "envying" and striving to achieve in real life, but they also have flaws, they make mistakes and they sometimes even doom themselves (Nienor). So _where_ is Tolkien lacking in "strong female characters"? No one is denying that he wrote more male characters than female ones, but the ones he _did_ write were great characters. He shows us what every modern Hollywood screenwriter should learn: quality is much better than abundance.
And we might add Emeldir, who basically saved House Bëor from extinction when she led the remaining women and children to Hithlum while the men stayed and fought for their homeland. Aerin, married to an Easterling, quietly supporting her people even if it got her in trouble with her husband. Idril, whom every single survivor of Gondolin owed their life because none would have been able to escape, had she not had the tunnel built. Aredhel defying her brother, escaping the beasts of Nan Dungortheb, and leaving Ëol. - But, sure, no strong women in Tolkien... just like he only writes black and white characters, I guess 🙄
@@irena4545 Thank you, thank you Irena for sharing that and reminding me of it. Brilliant! Absolutely brilliant! Yes, she was courageous and noble while her husband and son if I recall put together a rebel group to fight Morgoth. If I recall Emeldir was called either Stouthearted or Manhearted. I think it was Manhearted. But yes, before Hollywood twisted and perverted what it is to represent legendary women, The Professor poured his passion and poetry into gifting us some of the most epic heroines. Thank you for your comment. Wishing you a most wonderful day my friend!
One of the great reasons I love making videos are the amazing interactions and the undeniable insights, thoughts and commentary shared. George, you hit it out of the park! ‘Hollywood screenwriters should learn: quality is much better than abundance.’ Perfect! So many beautiful and rich tales Tolkien wove into his tapestry: and female characters may not equal the number of male characters, each in their unique way is a gem. A brilliant jewel that can both radiate tragedy and triumph with equal nobility, intelligence, beauty, sensitivity, courage, honor and power. Hollywood has given us 5 years of non-stop masculine women and Mary Sues. Hundreds of them. Yet, who can even recall their characters as worthy of remembrance just as you now shared some of the Professors. Love it! Cheers to you my friend!
@@GeorgeTheGiantSlayer Man-hearted, and you are welcome 🙂 And I would also add a little quote about Aerin, which, I think, would do well for certain people in Hollywood to read every day, and hopefully, come to understand: "Many a man of arms misreads patience and quiet." Have a wonderful day, too!
Nice arguments. Great work. Netflix has already destroyed the Wicher through serial ,where nothing was from the books .Now Amazon wants the same with Tolkien's work. These people should disappear from cinematography.
Tolkien hated allegory. He says in the preface to Lord of the Rings to paraphrase, "I hate allegory in all its manifestations". What I find most ironic is this travesty of a TV show, which I will not even denegrate Tolkien's name by saying it is linked to his various epics, is that it is nothing but allegory. It is anti-Tolkien, anti-Lord of the Rings, anti-entertainment and anti-everything not in the woke bubble. This is going to be popular with about 0.0000000001% of the worlds population, but like the Democrat party they are trying to make us believe everyone will love it with propoganda and lies and redefining language (what's a recession now?).
If they changed all the names of the characters and called the show "Amazon's generic medieval fantasy" I'd probably think it looked alright, and would even watch it. But the association with Tolkien feels insulting. Even if it ends up being a decent fantasy show, I just can't. On principle.
September 2nd should be the day that every JRR Tolkien fan around the world cancels Amazon Prime. It would be the perfect way to honor the beloved grand master of fantasy literature.
Add Melian the Maia to the list of great female characters. She is the mother of Luthien (another great female character who took on Melkor - ref: Beren and Luthian) and the foremother of of Elrond and Elros. Galadriel is great too, but (Amazon take note) Elrond has the blood of the Maia in those veins of his and, of cause, is no idiot.
Keep on your good work George, Thank you ! I'm following you from Reunion Island, a French State in Indian Ocean near Madagascar. Im' a real Tolkien Fan as Read several times the Silmarilion, "contes et légendes perdues" of the first and second age and of course The Lord of the Ring and The Hobbit (sorry for my bad english as French is my natural language and I don't know if the translation of the french title book is the same in english... Keep on the fight !
I confused "stoors" and "harfoots" because I am french speaker. My bad. Smeagol et Deagol were "Stoors" and not "Harfoots". Almost all Hobbits in the Shire are "harfoots" except for some who mix with Fallohide blood like Frodo and others in Buckland who are mixed with "stoors" blood and live closer to Bree. At least I'm more familiar with the original terms now.
Great video again. Their non-stop U-turns and contradictions show how much they're scared and lost control, even if they try to make fans sound like idiots.
What about Luthien? She dessobey her father, the king, in order to save his beloved from the tower of Sauron himself, and then went with Beren to face Morgoth, face to face she makes him asleep and stole a silmaril from his crown and escapes without scratch, that's some empowerment.
you play Luthien down alot, she's the daughters of a literal goddess, when she diminished the world literally became dimmer, and Morgoth was literally at the time was just as powerful a Manway who is the king of the "gods" hes not even a Miar, and his basically his brother, and she smote him down onto the ground with her voice asleep. Empowerment.. JUST a bit.
I have slain the notification bell and am now subscribed to your channel😄💛 Good thing too! Your videos are great! So the cast and Amazon fans of The Rings Of Power are happy to have characters that looks like them, the first woman dwarf of colour, the first woman activist, the first elf of colour, none of these things matter. I read Tolkien's books every year ever since I was a child. When I read his story or any other kind of novel that I love like Dune, or The Last Kingdom series, I don't need characters to look like me to connect with them. Those who need that are very shallow and they lack imagination.
Welcome aboard MsEnglish! Many thanks for taking the time to share your insightful thoughts. I’m thrilled you are enjoying the videos. You are absolutely spot on in your characterization. ‘Those who need that are shallow and they lack imagination.’ I feel sad for them, for what a bleak world they live in. If they cannot connect with anyone that is not their mirrored reflection how shut off are they from the rich beauty found in timeless stories and the wonder of undiscovered countries waiting to be explored not only in the Legendarium but in Herbert’s Dune and Bernard Cornwell’s The Last Kingdom that you shared or in his Sharpe’s series, which I love. Just started reading Last Kingdom and God Emperor of Dune. You picked some of my top favorites. Thank you. Hope you have a phenomenal weekend my friend!
I was absolutely gutted by season 8 of Game of Thrones. Gutted. As a 28-year old who grew up on LOTR as basically my, my brothers and my fathers bible I seriously loved GoT massively. It even in some instances for me rivaled the best fantasy ever, Lord of the Rings. I remember that right after that fiasco, this Amazon-series was announced. And I knew then I wouldn't watch it. But I just got stabbed in the back by D&D. Time heals wounds and I kinda forgot about this series being a thing. Till about two weeks ago. I was baffled by a black elf and a black dwarf. Im really sorry but... those are not elves or dwarfs. But then again, sign of the times. I brushed it off. But it was the actors themselves that broke me. 'The most important thing for Hollywood and the work of Tolkien is that it is now for everyone' 'I am the first female dwarf of colour' Just... what can you say about this other than fuck off? Fuck you? I will not watch a second of this show. I closed my laptop right after Arya killed the Night King in GoT and didn't watch anything after. Felt amazing. Im going to keep that up. Sorry, random rant.
I will never understand why Amazon didn't just adapt Conan the Barbarian. From what I understand they controlled the rights at one time. If they didn't I would be willing to bet that they would have been cheaper that Tolkien. A fantasy with a fan base but not to devoted, strong female characters. Diversity. Nudity. Seems like exactly what they wanted. Plenty of source material. Conan is not exactly a rocket scientist in the original works and he is upstaged by some of the females heroines. I just don't get it.
Brilliant comment. Conan could rival the best of the Game of Thrones seasons, in terms of special effects and stories. Khal Drago can play him (again!)!
I can't remember the details now, but I heard that the Conan property still has a protector who wouldn't approve anything about a woke version of the character. Much like Christopher Tolkien once provided.
@@clogs4956 I agree but the legendarium is more flexible that JRR Tolkien, in my opinion. And I literally just finished listening to the complete Conan the Barbarian Weird Tales Omnibus for the 5th or 6th time. 35 hours of Crom.
@@brianmorris4446 well, granted that several writers have turned their hand to finishing Howard's unfinished scripts... read de Camp, avoid Offrut, imo. I would like to see Howard's horror/weird stories get more air time. There's been a few odd adaptations, but a whole series would be wonderful, beginning with 'Pigeons from Hell'.
I read Tolekein's books as a kid (he was after all a classic literature Don) and the films were quite accurate to his vision, however, I think even he would keel over and be flabbergasted by this series and its utter distorted vision and message of what he had originally set out to do. It's almost like this series has no relevance or relationship to anything Tolkein penned as an author.

Alphonsus, I have dreamt my whole life of visiting Vanuatu. Have read so much about it. Glad to hear from you. Your words are refreshing. Every time I hear someone holding the line, fighting for the Professor’s Arda it is inspiring! I have planted my feet and am going nowhere. Day by day people learn about what they’ve done to Tolkien and what their underlying motivations are. That is most important. They wish to pollute a mythology in order to butcher the heroes in a long battle against culture. Without great legends and loves. Without great myths. People become demoralized and lose hope. If they loved and trusted the source material they wouldn't have to twisted it and bastardize it beyond recognition. If they wanted to make a show with a more diverse color palette than Tolkien's world they could have picked literally any other fantasy world. For those who aren't ubernerds like myself you should know that in almost every other fantasy setting elves are highly adapted to their environment. You'll have snow elves and sea elves and every kind of elf you can think of including elves with dark skin. I can think of at least 6 specific fantasy settings where a black elf isn't lore breaking. I can think of ways to put black elves in to Tolkien's world without completely and utterly trashing the lore (and tokenizing the character) but of course Amazon couldn't be arsed. So we get one (token) black elf with zero explanation for how or why he is so drastically different than his kin. It's going to be awful, it's going to be offensive. You can already tell because of the way they choose to style his hair and the fact that he is in a relationship with a single Mom. There is at least one scene that we know of where he is chained up. They are going to try to be so on the nose with it that they are going to end up actually being offensively racists themselves.
If they had made an effort to try to respect the lore they could have made the Don Lemmon Elf half Elf and half Haradrim. That would have made at least a little sense.
@@Waroion Tolkien's "Dark Elves" did not refer to the color of their skin. It referred to the elves that came to Beleriand from the east but did not travel to the west to see the light of the Two Trees. They were called the Moriquendi, the Dark Elves.
All this corporate bastardasing of IPs like Star Wars and Marvel by Disney and now this travesty by Amazon of Tolkien is producing absolute killer content creators like this guy and the guys at Nerdrotic! Keep on fighting the good flight, we're winning and people like you are the only ones we're supporting!
If that guy feels like Native American chiefs are "the closest we have to Elves in human form" then why did he a) accept to portray a _short-haired_ elf, the beautiful and healthy long hair of Amerindian men is what most likely made him think this in the first place; b) not advocate for a Native American actor (with cultural long hair) to take the role he is playing in his stead? Is he not an activist? Also, why only Native American _ chiefs_ and not Native American _people_ in general? And isn't there at least _one_ (possibly more) racist thing/implication in the sentence he said?
They lost me 'way back with "Mah gorl Ga-lad-reeeee-EL!!!", and "I can fix him". It was crystal clear what they were doing then. That commercial, oh my stars, I laughed and cringed at the same time. I can totally see them doing that kind of thing.
At the end of the day, a billion $ series like this just doesn't start messing up at this point. The "show runners" (who look like bad 90s Hollywood film frat boys), have their job because they will shut up, shut the amazon BS and get not with it. They will basically sell their souls. Same for the actors. This was the direction amazon decided many years ago when they bought the notes of Tolkien.
George, thank you so much for making these videos and calling them out on their bs. You, Nerdrotic, Disparu, Sebastian from European Lore and Just Some Guy speak in the name of millions of actual Tolkien fans who don't have means to make their voices heard. When I saw the KitKat ad, my eyes fell off my sockets. Like, Jesus, is this what it's come to? KitKat ads? How low could you get Amazon? No, you guys don't understand! Tolkien's work was hailed as "The Book of the 20th Century". It was officially the best selling book of all time after The Bible in the 20th century... The second book after THE BIBLE, let that sink in for a minute! Now imagine the outrage if there was a KitKat ad about Jesus Christ... This is blasphemous to Tolkien's true fans...
3:00 The boy who plays Theo looks like he's rolling his eyes at her. He looks so annoyed as soon as she starts speaking. I saw a video from another channel yesterday that did a hair commercial for Oldbrimbor. It was quite funny.
I love this material so much that even after being translated in numerous countries I need my show to provide “access”. Gee Mr.Wizard, access is in the form of being translated into so many different languages.

@@Vera0723 At best they have managed to produce a visual bell-bottom Jeans spectacle...or pet rocks of today.
Here, here!
Good point! That's just laziness and disrespect to targeted auditory from "creators". They think that people will not recognize "strong" character unless they carry brutal weapon and are physically beating bigger foes. Pathetic attempt to reach more viewers and get good ratings from critics with zero creativity and effort.
Women destroyed our hobbies.
I wouldnt call that "progressive"

This isn't like someone working a garage or factory in middle-America whose boss can say "Stop wearing those political t-shirts in at work or find another job." Then realize she didn't even need Beren and tell him to go on his merry way or something.
ELWING!! IDRIL!!
I'm going to enjoy the second of September by cancelling my Amazon prime & having a middle earth marathon over the weekend 😊
Anyone with prime should cancel the day they release the first episode.
I cancelled my prime subscription once I saw the first trailer, There was other shows I wanted to see but I'm out, F off amazon
I used to be mad then I realized Tolkien’s work won’t suffer this show. This show is already dead it’s stillborn waiting for the corpse to be removed
Kitkat is owned by Nestle, which I boycot for crimes against humanity the last 30 years, since the so called Bamako campaign.
Seeing the clip of Galadriel jumping at the troll made me piss my pants with laughter
And it wasnt just a jump, she used a sword to jump from it
I am playing an elf so I'm researching Native Americans.
@@GeorgeTheGiantSlayer Excellent Words . Thank you amazing comment .❤️
Great point.
pay no attention to the man behind the curtain
They may aswell use Tolkien himself in that KitKat commercial. "It's what Tolkien would eat if he was alive".
Holy Christ, the vagisal commercial is one of the funniest things I have seen in years! Absolutely hilarious, this channel is great.
I know, right? That had me laughing for a good 10 minutes. It's well done.
I just might manage to drum up the motivation to order some Vagisil from Amazon and cancel the order immediately, citing a Rings of Power as the reason... 😆
You know where the interview panel is going when Steven Colbert is hosting it. Love your channel and humor.
And even he was getting impatient with them at times.
@@RedHuntsman He was at that.
Exactly! And then when they offer him a role and did that whole shtick. Embarrassing.
This show gets a lot of hate, but it has some great dialogue, like:
"You won't have ears tonight, you wont have eyes or a tongue, you will wander the halls of Womandos blind deaf and dumb and all the dead will know, this is Sauron, the fool who thought he'd killed Gollum."
Or ike this gem:
"My name is Frodo Baggins. You killed my uncle. Prepare to die."
I keep saying, when Gandalf bursts out of Kane’s chest and shouts “are you not entertained? you princes of numenor, ye kings of Endor”
I literally had goosebumps. Amazon is truly crafting a timeless classic.
That moment when the Old Wizard said
“Gollum is only mostly dead, but mostly dead means partially Alive!”
Absolutely Breathtaking...
And this moment when Galadriel hangs over the ravine and says "Gandalf told me enough. He told me you killed my brother!!#!"
And Finrod comes out of the orc prosthetics and says "I am your brother", I was in tears
I loved the part where sauron said 'ill be back'
Note to self. Don't buy KitKat.
Tolkien:I want no modern politics reflected in my work
ROP Actress:I am an activist and bring that to my role
Their actions betray their words every step of the way.
As tends to be the case with witless worms.
Yeah... 1984 appears to be a manual, not just a warning.
But people are so full of apathy. Such cowards. Depressing.
Great job, George! Once again you really nailed it. And the Vagisil commercial parody is hilarious. Though I wouldn't put it past Amazon to do something just as outrageous!
Keep up the good work!
Thrilled you and so many others got a kick out of it! We have to be able to laugh and do our best to mock them. That is some of the best medicine for these people. Thank you Mary for sharing your enjoyment. Hope you have an incredible weekend my friend!😊
Why, don't they enough SUPERFANS to make this a huge success?
"Το κακό δεν μπορεί να δημιουργήσει τίποτα καινούργιο, μπορεί μόνο να διαφθείρει και να καταστρέψει αυτά που οι καλές δυνάμεις έχουν εφεύρει ή κατασκευάσει." - J.R.R. Tolkien
Dunno why they didn’t just call it ‘The Rings of Girl Power’.
George, I love ya, man. Keep up the great work.
The cast interviews told us all we need to know. The Showrunners CANNOT put the genie back in the bottle. Whomever hired these guys and gave them a license to kill Rings should be sacked
Will boycott Amazon on Sept. 2 by cancelling my Prime subscription. I think that is the only way that they learn.
George THANK YOU for urging people to cancel their Prime. This outrage is literally just outrage if we don't actually act on it.

You have excellent screen presence. Nice job
Nice arguments. Great work. Netflix has already destroyed the Wicher through serial ,where nothing was from the books .Now Amazon wants the same with Tolkien's work. These people should disappear from cinematography.
Thank you for being a real fan unlike a lot of these hacks that got Early Access and flown to London and are now chilling for the show
Cancelled my prime tv and stopped ordering off Amazon there disrespecting Tolkien
Underrated comment

Hey Mr George, congrats on causing enough damage to this horrible garbage so that ur on their radar
It should be the day every Tolkien fan around the world stops using Amazon altogether.
OMG The Vagisil parody is the funniest thing I've seen in weeks. Bless your heart, George, that was FUN.
No love, no trust. These people are evil, they are criminal liars.
Those two treated Tolkien like a Barbie doll to dress up 🤭
That doesn't surprise me.🤔
Great video again.
'The most important thing for Hollywood and the work of Tolkien is that it is now for everyone'
'I am the first female dwarf of colour'
Just... what can you say about this other than fuck off? Fuck you?
I will not watch a second of this show. I closed my laptop right after Arya killed the Night King in GoT and didn't watch anything after. Felt amazing. Im going to keep that up.
Sorry, random rant.
You have great taste in literature. Those are in my top 10

I wouldn’t let these moderns anywhere near Robert E. Howard’s fine work, full stop.
@@clogs4956 I agree but the legendarium is more flexible that JRR Tolkien, in my opinion. And I literally just finished listening to the complete Conan the Barbarian Weird Tales Omnibus for the 5th or 6th time. 35 hours of Crom.

@@Hinatachan360 Wouldn't explain the black dwarf and black hobbit characters we've seen though.

@@Waroion Not that dark; I think the term was "ruddy" in complexion.

What pisses me off the most is those hack fucks dropping Tom Shippey's name after firing him for daring to say they are fucking up the lore.
I think Tolkien would love the fan's comments circumventing the censorship.

Well said!
“There is no curse in Elvish, Entish, or the tongues of Men for this treachery.” ― J.R.R. Tolkien
It wasn't made for fans, why would they care what fans think at all?
Love your vids George! I do miss your final words though.
