    I liked the ragnarok and black winter the most. Atlas and black heaven were a bit too nasal for my taste. D activator not enough in the mids and too much highs. Thanks for the comparison.

    I'm glad you mentioned pickups altering pinch harmonics. I used to think that I was incapable of performing a proper PH until I played a completely different rig and they sounded great. I was certain it was either my preamp or my pickups. I replaced my aging Korg AX1G with with an Ampero II (which helped a lot) and pickups are next.

    i don't mind a pickup that has a thicker low end because then you can carve it out in the eq to your liking vs a already tight pickup that you have to add depth and bass to not make it sound thin. That's more work IMO. I got a DiMarzio Dreamcatcher - it is clear and fast in pick response but it's fat in the bass but nothing a boost or an eq can't handle.

    Awesome Demo riffs! The Lundgren and the Guitarmory had a really nice grind in the mix. I really liked the range of the BKP’s. The chunk and chug of the black winters was great. But, to be fair I am pretty biased toward SD and BKP. I just put black winter blackened set in my Jazzmaster and painkiller in my KM-7.
    To me the DiMarzio was a little weak.

    Thank you very much for this great video! These humbuckers sound really great. The Ragnarok, Black Winter and the Black Heaven Lundgren are my favorites. I was surprised about the Guitarmory humbucker, it sounds really good. In the bridge position they sound all wonderful. The Dimarzio was also not bad sounding. I'm still looking for a good humbucker in the neck position that has enough clarity for my baritone. I have a ml1 modern storm burst baritone from Chapman and I'm not happy with the Sentient Seymoure Duncan humbucker in the neck position. It's too dark and has not the clarity I need. What could you recommend for the neck position in my case? I was thinking about the Rebell Yell humbucker from Bare Knuckle, it has less bass and more midds and highs in the sound. I'm not sure, if I use a set of Lundgren Black Heaven or the Black Winter from Seymoure Duncan, that the neck pickups sounding better as the Sentient...

      +Nick Harper - Have you messed with actives much? If you have multiple guitars I'd definitely recommend at least having one guitar with Fishmans or an EMG 81 in the bridge.
      I have a plethora of pickups (Fishmans, EMGs, Lundgren, Dimarzio, Duncans) and at the end of the day I always end up preferring a guitar with actives for that nasty stuff.
      I've yet to find a pickup that can do it all, so why not just collect them all so I got the right pickup for the right occasion.

    There was another youtuber who made a recent video about how different pickups didn't really matter for your tone in a mix. There's no need to spend extra cash on more expensive pickups and just go with the cheaper ones. While it's true, most metal pickups are similar to their sound. To me, personally, it matters down to every detail. The price of pickups do matter to me, but if it gets me even 10% closer to my ideal tone spending the extra $$$ is worth every penny.

    • @MetalHeadProductions
      @MetalHeadProductions  Год назад +2

      I know the video, and while he's right about the final mix, but it does matter to how everything plays and feels to play for sure. If it's not right for me, it gets in the way of my playing 100%

    • @jroc6166
      @jroc6166 7 месяцев назад

      @MetalHeadProductions Completely agree.... As we all know, speakers/cab choice has the greatest effect on tone... The pickups, preamp tubes etc may be a minor difference. But, it's how those minor differences add up when applied with a major tone shaper like speakers that really help you get your desired tone. And yes, thank you for hitting on that point.... It's not just how it sounds, but how it feels and responds that takes playing to another level and gives you an inspiring tone to write with.

    Dang! I have D Activators in my Alex Wade ltd 7 string lol. This video proved my suspicions. Things are gonna change around here;)
    I was thinking Ragnaroks before this vid. But now and surprisingly, the Black winters are on my radar for sure. I’ve been using a Seymour Duncan SH-6 Bridge and Jazz 3 neck on my first 7 string for years. I replaced the EMGs 81/85 type and it greatly improved string clarity and tightened everything up.

    I have a question in regards to pickup comparison videos on youtube. Why do so many comparison videos I watch I hear almost no difference between pickups but with Keith Merrows seymour duncan comparison videos I notice super massive differences between pickups even on phone speakers? I definitely noticed more of a difference with crunch in your video and I love your channel by the way.

    • @MetalHeadProductions
      @MetalHeadProductions  2 года назад +1

      I go into that in the video, the amp, speakers, cab, mic and mic placement all have the biggest impact on the sound and when keep everything but the pickups the same, the differences will be less overt. I do do out of mixes with high gain, overdrive and cleans to really show the differences, and you can especially hear them on the overdrive and clean tones, so I'm glad that helped you hear the differencees more clearly.
      I can't speak to why Keith's would show larger differences.

    • @ejw3006
      @ejw3006 Год назад

      Probably just the differences in tone helps poke out the difference in pickups, Keith uses a clearer, less saturated tone than this vid does. So my best bet would be just the amount and sound of the gain being applied is what affects the guitar tone the most, the less amp gain and character you add the more the pickups will sound different. That’s my hypothesis at least for that.
