I'm a beginner. Last weekend I used the "back hand over the tail" technique and I saw on the video that my posture immediately straightened out. I felt smoother and more control. It was my 4th trip as a beginner and I thank you for the help.
i've been snowboarding for over 20 years. I find that training videos out there are shit because most people giving out the lessons don't have more than 5 years experience on the hills. Your videos are the best ones out there. Good Job man!
I've been snowboarding for a few months and refer to your videos as I progress. They've helped me from day one! Now I'm carving down blue runs. Thanks for making such great tutorials! You give some of the best beginner snowboarding advice on RUclips!
You forgot about the weight distribution. Keeping your weight balanced, parallel to the slope and shifting it to the front leg before the turn makes turning easier.
Thumbs up! it makes it much easier to engage your edges if your weight is evenly distributed and not positioned over the back of the board. Thats only really good for Powder days
Thanks man for what you're doing! I m a beginner and your lessons help me so much !I live just next to the Alpes and with you I don't need any teacher ! Keep doing it!
Thanks for the tip 3---create rhythm, it did work !! I went to grouse mountain yesterday, and tried that, it worked!!!! Finally I can do smooth turns !!!!!! Yeah!!!! Thank you so much !
Well I'm new and this is the most helpful video I've seen for beginning snowboarders! Spot on guidance...especially the back hand point. I see good boarders counter rotating all the time and this helps keep that in check.
Hey Kevin, Great videos, I started snowboarding 4 years ago and always reference back to some of your videos especially in the fall. Can't wait for the snow to start falling here in Colorado! Copper Mountain and WInter Park are Awesome here!
Awesome video - thanks - been looking for this stage for ages - only started snowboarding this year, so trying to catch up for lost time - loads of coverage of beginner turns and carving, but this stage seemed to be the missing link, I can do this on the less steep stuff, but when it is steeper and faster I seem to go back to beginner turns, scrubbing off loads of speed. I guess it is just practice!! - Thanks again - your videos are very helpful!
Thanks Kevin, this is so helpful. I've started counting my turns to get a rhythm and that really helps but I had no idea about the hand trick. Your beginner turns video also reminded me to look in the direction of the turn to rotate my body... Am in the French Alps and am gonna go and try these tips out!
Awesome tips! Nice to see it done goofy for once!!! It makes sooo much more sense seeing it that way. Oh, and don't listen to the haters. Your videos helped me a lot. Perfect for those who just need to see it done the correct way and be given the tools to perfect their style. See you on the mountain!!!
+antsolja , My advice is to always be on an edge. The way Kevin goes from one turn right into the next will minimize time in flat board. Flat board is dangerous because the board will often rotate sideways to direction of travel and leave you vulnerable to catching an edge. If the board is linear to direction of travel you will not catch an edge (obviously). If your trying to pick up speed you can gently rock from edge to edge. If your catching your front edge it may be because your upper body is facing direction of travel instead of a centered stance. (this also makes a toe side turn difficult). In other words: If you have a quarter twist in your hips(bad) the board will try to untwist when in flatboard leaving you vulnerable to catching an edge. If your catching your heel edge it's possible that you are trying to put yourself vertical to 'force a turn' before the board is ready (still in a toe side skid) thus letting your heal edge down while it is leading. Word are a poor tool for explaining actions.
This is my exact issue too. I think as one of the replies says the problem is staying in flat board because that is where you are vulnerable... Keep on trying!
hey kevin, I was wondering if you could do a video on how to tackle steeps. I can handle blues really well but on some steeper reds and most blacks I sometimes struggle. thanks and keep up the good content
A turn tip I got early is to imagine your back hand is holding the rudder on a boat. It gives a focus to keep the hand over the back of the board and I found my turns were instantly better when I used that visual.
Thanks a lot for the vids! I've started snowboarding last week and already got down most of my turns and tricks thanks to you..keep up the good work :)
Hej Kevin!!! I saw a lot of your's videos and they are very helpfull. Im going to use all your advices and lern faster and faster :) Thank you very much for being there for me :) and create great lessosns and explain everything :) Heve a good day and I will let you know how the season goes soon :)
Hi I'm now on a ski trip and today was my first day snowboarding. I still do understand how to toe turn into a heel turn. I keep falling over when I try to toe turn. Also how do I keep in 'rhythm' and not stop all the time. Get back as soon as possible, thanks for your time 😃
Great videos, great advice...I am going tomorrow for snowboarding (Rusutsu, Japan) and taking your advice with me, will take some videos of my riding and if it is possible I will like to send you for more advice, it is possible? Once more thanks, ED
Your videos have changed my riding so quickly! Thank you SO MUCH. I have a question though: I can turn easily from toe side to heel side, but going from heel side to toe side I feel like I gain too much speed too fast before I can actually start turning. I get scared and bail out of it sometimes, and I go right back to my heel side (my comfortable side). I can rarely complete a toe side turn. Any tips for making my board come around faster to toe side?
Should I Snowboard or Ski? A few friends and I are going skiing in Easter and I'm not sure which one to do? I have been skiing four times and are a fairly confident. I have been snowboarding once but that was 6 years ago, and if I do it I will be by my self; but I really want to try it again. Which should I choose?
Hey Kevin, what do you mean by getting your board on edge earlier? Everytime I try to make a toeturn on a a steep mountain, I end up falling but I'm not sure why. What do you think? Thanks :)
Hey Kevin, love your channel! Could you please clarify something for me? When you say pressure your edge to spray snow out the side of the turns, are you just applying more pressure with your back foot or are you applying even pressure with both feet? I tried doing this in Bulgaria but our instructor was less than helpful 😿, so I'm a bit stuck between beginner and intermediate turns. Thanks Kevin, I hope to hear from you!
I'm a beginner snowboarder and have just figured out how to turn my snowboard with both of my arms out from a instructor. I can zig zag across but want my turns to be more fluid with rhythm. I also want to be able to turn without having my arms out. Is this the right video I should watch to help smooth out my turns? Is this the "next step" for me?
really really nice vid for beginner, how do i put pressure on edge, for example, on toe side edge, when i bend knees, lean forward and put pressure on shoe tongue, do i need to lock ankle or flex ankle? if i flex ankle, the board just becomes flatter instead of keep a steep angle with ground, and the board skids rightaway, if i lock ankle, my calves get tired very quick, then it becomes very hard to keep board tilt on edge stably.
Could you please make a video about overcoming fears from injuries. I have been able to do boxes and rails for a couple of years, but every year I seem to make a dumb mistake and hurt my wrist. Then it takes me some time to overcome my fear. I am completely comfortable with riding on to boxes but since I broke my wrist so many times I'm always afraid I'm going to be on my edge. And when I think about it I always do fall. I have a week trip out to Colorado planned and it will be my first week back from my injury and I hope we will be able to get back at it. Thanks.
+James3160 I'm relatively new to snowboarding, so I can't help a lot, but if you don't already, I'd highly suggest wrist guards. Saved me a lot of times when I slammed backwards / forwards on the board at high speeds.
+James3160 I snowboard, skateboard, and parkour. I can safely say there is no video that will help you. Learning to fall the right way is crucial to minimizing injuries. Otherwise, extreme sports involve risk of injuries and a person has to be comfortable with that. It is all mental now. When I was trying tricks that scared me, a common tactic that works is to visualize yourself completing what you're trying to do from start to finish beforehand. Believe in yourself. If you have doubt from the start, you will fail. In parkour especially, I pushed myself to limits I never thought I would have the guts to do. I was able to do it because I didn't give myself time to get scared. I just got up and did it. Psych yourself up and do it. No doubt - just confidence and you'll be fine!
+Boola bend your knees when you turn and then straighten your legs when shifting edge, it almost makes the board shift on its own :) and make sure that you are not leaning on your back foot which can be the case if you put much preassure on it while turning.
open the downhill knee out, the board will easily come around. I learned that from this video, worked beautifully. now it just comes natural and I don't think about it.
im pretty new to snowboarding and looking at videos to learn a bit, When i see turning u turn with your shoulders, but for balance u keep your hands parallel to your board, do u keep doing that when turning or does your front arm follow your shoulder and go off a bit?
Hi I am a big fan and your vids have helped me a lot. I weight 90 pounds andam 173cm tall and Im riding a 2014 Burton Easy Livin Jimi Hendrix, size 151. I havent been able to some of the tricks u show on ur vids, any idea why? Anyways keep up wih yhe good work! P.S.: I also am riding at Grouse Mountain (Vancouver). Hope to c u up there!
Hey! I've been snowboarding for just a little time now, but I do suffer from fish memory, so everytime I go on the slopes is like learning over again! I was remembering though, that the flexibility on my board has to do something with turning, am I correct? Whenever I push my toe on one foot while pushing the heel on the other it will...? Does that have to do anything with what you mentioned on your video on "taking the knee in and out"? Thanks!!
Hey! This video was very helpful. But I feel I am struggling with the same thing. Which is putting too much weight on my back foot, not the front, when trying to turn. I thought it was because I was using the wrong lead foot (left in front). I tried switching to right foot in front but am experiencing the same problem. :-( Heel edge is great, toe edge... not so much. I fall when I try to turn from heel to toe or vice versa.
Cheyenne Mercer just remember to turn your back foot before you tilt your board or else its a guarantee fall! and if your struggeling with stopping at the toe edge, just make sure you face your whole upper body up the slope and then u will stop eadily!
help! noticed I use my upper body to turn, almost in a jerking motion, and although I'm turning weirdly I can't break out of. im still a newbie and any advice is truly appreciate since I'm traveling to deer valley soon to snowboard. thanks!
I went out this weekend and was trying to improve my basic riding but I found that there was a lot of pressure on my front calf from my boot. Any ideas what this is from? My boots seemed tight enough I have a mild duck stance on my board. Is it from not being properly positioned over my stance? Please help me because the amount of pressure the back of the boot put on my calf caused me to go in early because it hurt so much
i have an idea for a video i just got back from a week of snowboarding, and one of the biggest difficulties was when i slide on a planar track and lose speed anthill finally i stop and can't move, is there a way to regain speed and momentum?
Kevin, I subscribe your channel for a very long time. I really hope you can answer my question. I really scared the speed when you turn your board straight downhill. Is there anyway can help me to overcome this since I start learning snowboarding at 29 years old - - Thank you bro. Cheer.
Zhou Zou I can't really help you since I don't snowboard and I think I would love the speed but I'll try anyways, start slow and get comfortable there and gradually go faster
Hey I'm a beginner snowboarder... only been riding for 6-7 days so far. I used to have my turns down perfectly but didn't snowboard for a long time and now I'm having trouble getting my board to do what I want it to. I remember to put my weight on my front foot and such, and that gets me pointing downhill, but once I'm pointing downhill I have trouble completing the turn. I always end up having to swing my arms around to get my board on the right edge. Any suggestions?
I have a similar issue even though I've been boarding three years... I almost threw my elbow out last time I went up cause I was swinging my arms around too much. Try what he said about keeping your back hand over your board - or, alternatively, what works for me (when I remember it) is to keep my front hand infront of my hip, my back hand behind my hip... And when I wanna turn... Basically imagine holding a hoola hoop around your hips and turning that as your "steering wheel" .... It sounds really stupid but it helps quiet your hands (keeping them down by your sides) and keep your body in alignment. I find my board follows me easy and smooth when I do this.
Althought you have to put weight to your front foot don't completely forget about your back one. Without seeing you ride i can't be 100% sure but my guess is that you forget about your back foot. If you pass to heel of toe edge only on the front foot the back one will cause the board to stay flat in the back. This way it's more likely to catch an edge with your tail and preventing you from finishing the turn, hence the hand waving to force the board with a counterspin of your upper body. Also, for turn make sure you lean your shoulder to anticipate the turn, like diving in with your body and letting the board follow you. Not the opposite ;) ( sorry for the awful english ^^ )
Are my heels not supposed to move up and down inside the boots? m wearing boots size 6. When standing straight, my toes barely touch the front, which sounds right. But when doing toe turn, Mine heels can move up and down in the boots and i feel like that makes it harder for me to do toe turn. But If i go half size down, 5.5, i feel like too tight for my toes when standing up. My regular shoes size is 6.
+Emily Truong It sounds like you don't have your boots laced properly. You do not want your feet to move around in the boots and you are already experiencing the issues of that in your turns. I also suggest trying different socks and finding what gives you warmth and "snuginess" in the right places.
I'm a beginner. Last weekend I used the "back hand over the tail" technique and I saw on the video that my posture immediately straightened out. I felt smoother and more control. It was my 4th trip as a beginner and I thank you for the help.
Are u a pro know

David Paquet Thanks man! I taught snowboard at a high level in Whistler for ten years. Trying my best to share that knowledge.
Well, you're doing a good job. The mountains in Quebec aren't has big but we try our best to get on the slopes when the snow is nice
yep
Not neccessarily true.
I've been snowboarding for a few months and refer to your videos as I progress. They've helped me from day one! Now I'm carving down blue runs. Thanks for making such great tutorials! You give some of the best beginner snowboarding advice on RUclips!
The clouds at 2:25... just wow
That looks like water idk but ya
MiniMini Yeah it’s water, because the ocean is at the top of a mountain... Haha, well maybe this is the future with Global warming.
Nate G I know sooo beautiful
That's cotton candy!
Could you maybe do a video on how to ride on very icy slopes
It would be very helpful
Thanks in advance
Just started snowboarding this year and your video and advice are just what I need to progress. Thank you for sharing it!
You forgot about the weight distribution. Keeping your weight balanced, parallel to the slope and shifting it to the front leg before the turn makes turning easier.
Thanks for the addition!
Thumbs up! it makes it much easier to engage your edges if your weight is evenly distributed and not positioned over the back of the board. Thats only really good for Powder days

Hi Kevin. Thanks for the video. The 3 tips helped me to link my turns properly for the first time in 3 years!
Hey Alex, that's awesome to hear man!

The best instruction I've encountered so far. Thanks
Phenomenally helpful series by Kevin. Thanks a lot!

William Nelsen Awesome man!
do you have any tips on how to overcome my crippling fear of catching an edge while transitioning from one edge to the other?
I have the same issue. Just be confident. I keep trying to tell myself that. Haha

Thanks a lot for the vids! I've started snowboarding last week and already got down most of my turns and tricks thanks to you..keep up the good work :)

Can you do a board slide to a 270 off vid plz?
Really helpful. Thanks
super helpful. THANK YOUUU!!!!
Thank you 😄👍
I don't know what it is but I don't trust myself to lean forward I always fall.. Any tips on that?
Great videos and channels. Keep it up
I keep catching an edge or something every time I switch from toe to heel when trying to link turns and I ride goofy. What am I doing wrong?
You may be trying to turn to quickly. Let your board run straight for a second before turning to your heel edge. Hope this helps!
+SnowboardProCamp You're probably right. I'll try it when I go back. Thanks.

hey just wondering what snowboard do you normally ride?
He rides a Burton Easy Livin
Not the opposite ;)
( sorry for the awful english ^^ )
Grouse mountain? As in the grouse mountain in the lower mainland?
Yeah! That's the one!
+SnowboardProCamp oh sweet! I'm in Kelowna
do you guys do lessons?
when i first start going down the hill i pick up a lot of speed and its hard to turn to slow down how do i stop myself from speeding up so quickly?
hey man, what size board do you have?
