Old school grower here, 30+ years, and not once did I ever give plants 48 hours of darkness because I thought terps would be enhanced. We did it because metabolites are dormant at night and stay within the root system, whereas day time it’s up in the plant to help photosynthesis. And those metabolites are what we thought have funky tastes. Even to this day, I always harvest before lights on. I do believe there is science to back this up as well. Then again, I could be wrong.

When it comes to smell. I never have noticed an increase in smell with darkness at harvest. Putting them into darkness is more of a done thing. Like when they spray soybeans with poison at harvest to get the whole field all done. The darkness doesn't help potency. But it does help curing and drying. I have noticed an increased smell with cold at harvest outdoors. I try to harvest when they bring out the loud smells. Not for peak thc, because peak smell makes more potent weed than peak thc. Most cup winners are only 18-21% thc, but always over 3.7% terpenes. All about those stinky terpenes. About 2-3 days of house stinking is harvest time. I have had plants that didn't stink. They weren't that good either. Higher terpenes makes more potent bud not higher thc%. Stress makes higher trepene levels. That stress puts them in survival mode. No longer perfect conditions. That's were good genetics show. Some cultivars have drought genetics that really ups the terpenes in a drought. Other like humid conditions like a jungle. It's about having info on your cultivar. I want pages of info not 4 sentences. That's the difference between good genetics and a hyped up name. Is good genetics come with proper information on the cultivar. Good genetics will have flowering times for indoor and outdoor. Good genetics will tell you if it is resistant or susceptible to stuff. Good genetics will tell you what they use to get proper terpene profile for cultivar. Good genetics come with a COA, and health certificate. Information on the cultivar makes good genetics. So you can match your environment to the right cultivar. Example there are a lot of heirloom vegetables I can't grow because they take too long for zone 4-5. I only have so many growing degree days here. Sunlight is not equal around the world either. Some plants grow better in partly shade. Like my blueberry patches growing bigger berries in the shade than full sun. Some cannabis cultivars were grown where sunlight wasn't as strong. So don't have genetics for desert sun.

The smells are the precious terps evaporating. You don't want them to smell. Even in a jar, if it smells, you are smelling the terps you are losing. If it doesn't smell, it is stabilized.

I mean, technically the drying and curing is a part of terpene production. My argument for this is that they're still developing fully through the breakdown of the sugars and such.
Another thing I would say is to avoid over-feeding, that can negatively affect the terpene production and introduce tastes that distract from the terps. Not really for producing terps, though to avoid contaminating the taste of terps with other unwanted tastes (like too much nitrogen and such). Worth looking towards ways to reduce the chlorophyl content during the final stages, as that is often a big distraction to clean terp tastes.

      Great info!

    • @HerbisRGreen
      @HerbisRGreen Месяц назад +1

Totally agree with "they're still developing fully through the breakdown of the sugars and such." You can physically observe this during the drying process when you compare nugs that are still attached to branches that are attached to the stalk to nugs that are hanging just from branch (no stalk), and the nugs that get detached from branch. The nugs that are fully detached dry quicker and end up in the trim pile. The buds that still have a line to the stalk tend to stay chunky with better terps and they're more visually pleasing. Smoke better too. The ones that are connected to branches wind up somewhere in the middle depending on how thick the branch they were attached to was.

Then, on the last week, I add an extra hour each day and drop temps a couple degrees each day trying to get to 56 to 60 at harvest
Just my opinion works for me

In the early '90s we would grow over the winter in mid-Florida areas. We always brought our pots inside for 2-3 days of 24 hour light, because we were naturally at 10/14 light cycle. We'd do the final nutrient run inside and not really go for a full flush. We'd just run a balanced flow to bring up the sweet terps and push out the bitter or harsh fertilizer tastes. Cut back the water by half, and just watch the terps finish and start to get creamy. Cuts down on the drying time so you can start curing a lot quicker and cleaner. We'd get at least 15-25% more terps and trichomes. The perfect stalks and balls. 1970's guerilla grower taught my cousin, not realizing 12 year olds have big ears. Used it about 10 years later to pretty good success.

I hang dry the whole plants for as long as possible between 60 and 70f at 55-65% humidity, then I begin trimming and store at progressively lower humidity levels at the same temperature as the hanging plants till my long term storage jars have the 32% packs meant for instruments in them so the bud grinds just right, and smokes almost perfect, some varieties have to be prevented from long curing and after the 1st run or 2 you will figure it out.

Heloo everyone 👋Live in Scotland run two 600w hid’s together to flower 12 clones perpetually use a 250 W cfl for cloning and a400w mh for bringing clones on ready for last veg and flower under the two 600’s. Solely organic, fabric 3 gallon pots lst and top twice normally so 8 colas or more on each plant trained on trellis net use bio biz soil and products. No complaints great smells and sticky trichomes all over, my normal indoors temp is 75 Fahrenheit, I don’t run any ac I don’t control rh either and my plants grow great, no tents either my grow room “boxes” are made from 1.2 m square sheets of 5mm bathroom Whitewall plastic 4 together stood up makes a square with 1.2m high sides 👍light hung in centre same again for 2nd lamp with oscillating fans everywhere and it looks great I have trouble getting to low 60’s for drying and curing it’s often harvested hung in a dark cupboard approx 23oC. when sticks snap into jars n then dark place burp daily. I deffinatky loose terps somewhere and I have trouble with potency of the weed but it looks awesome sticky and caked in crystals. Then when it comes to the smoke I’m always a bit dissapointed it’s hard to grow Amsterdam quality bud at home 😬

V.P.D on the LOW ENDS reaaaally limit overall growth. I found on the high end, I was able to pull off 2 4 oz autoflowers when it was peak summer and regrettable to grow inside. Tent was beyond 100F and 80-95% for the last month but LUCKILY zero budrot and the biggest plants to date. Was my first grow lol.
With AUTOS I was stressing but kinda rolling with it because of noticing high heat and humidity with some worm castings and daily watering, they grow the way they need with the limited veg time they get. Helps to get OG indicas like afghani/cheese/skunk etc.
One reeked of purple grape candy. The loudest terps for anything non skunky in my experience. Ill probably never pull it off again.

@@ScottyReal420 thanks, I will check it out. I like to keep humidity around 45-50% in the room. Tents hold their humidity after watering and a dehumidifier in the hallway takes care of too high humidity. The room across the hall from the grow room has four electric guitars and recoding equipment that costs more than all my grow stuff put together. It’s a balancing act between growing plants and keeping the guitar necks from getting out of whack. The only goal is to smoke good weed while playing guitar. My setup is all about compromising to find a good average. I don’t want the whole lower level to feel like the tropics but I don’t entirely ignore the environment in the room. One benefit in a slightly lower humidity is no problems with mold, mildew or pests (with the exception of curios cats).

@@ScottyReal420 thanks, checked out a VPD chart and I’m not that far off that it’s in the red. Common sense dictates temperatures and humidity that aren’t extreme in either direction. Environment I knew was my greatest challenge and admittedly has to be compromised at times. House rules, I have one space and it can’t be too dank. Granny used to partake fifty years ago but doesn’t have any dog in this fight in 2024. I shut it down a month or so in the summer then restart seedings that like it hot. I know the limitations and have to plan around extreme weather that affects the indoor environment.

Great vid, I have a question thats been floating around in me head since bruce bugbee said that 48hrs of darkness does NOT increase terpenes. Sure, turning the light off may slow down terpene production BUT I wasnt giving my plants the darkness to increase the production, I gave them no light to do 2 things, signal to the plant its about to die and to do what it can to get laid but also to prevent a loss of the terpenes due to them evaporating off because of the light/heat from the light.
So im wondering if while the darkness may not produce more terpenes (As shown by bruce) does it prevent the loss of terpenes meaning at the end your plant will have more even if its not actually produced more ?

The trichs can mature after the chop. It is a misconception that when the plant is cut, it dies and stops doing stuff.
Its very much alive and even when it "dies", if the water activity is high enough the enzymes inside it are still working breaking down things and converting other things to be released as gasses, Ethylene being one of them which can cause overbrowning or over ripening of buds post chop. If you use runoff water from plants which are ready to chop, the ripening hormones in that water can be used to bring on early ripening in your next harvest by about a week. It was shown the chemical changes during curing still happen 9 months after they were chopped though, even after there is no more water activity, where terpenes and other compounds change and the potency for the first time since the first weeks after chop, increases again.

So, how do I get the perfect VPD in an 11x12’ room, two small tents and a drying tent? The room is in the northwest corner of a Minnesota finished split level and the room was intended for storage and doesn’t have duct work. My tents are too small to put humidifiers and dehumidifiers in them (2x4 and it’s not unusual to have seedlings, vegging plants, flowering plants and drying plants going at the same time.
This being the tundra it’s not unusual for outside temps to be -20 and dry in the winter with the humidifier using more RO water than my plants and like now in May an inch of rain every other day and and running the dehumidifier 24/7.
VPD is just a fantasy with my setup I will never achieve at my level of growing and available space and equipment budget. Knowing that I try to do my best on temp and humidity and double down on the things I can control.
I get decent results by starting out with good genetics from reputable breeders. I figure if it’s rated as 30% and I only get 25% it’s still way better than the 5% of my youth.
If I were to take this VPD advice as absolutely necessary I’d have never started growing. A balance between simplicity and perfection can still produce good results better than store bought.

Lights on vaporizes them, lights off gives the plant time to restore them. I smell the most when lights are on, that means my terps are in the air vs on my plant. Im gonna research this more but im thinking the opposite of you.

If you want the least chlorophyll, brightest green nugs, most sugar and sweetest flavour from your stuff going into dry, try 48 hours of light and keep your temps lower, and it was shown that plants left in the dark for over 48hours lost potency and terps because the plant goes into the dying process without light for that long it begins eating itself, you don't get that from 48hours of ligjt

Basic science shows when Temperature rises humidity LOWERS and when Temperature lowers humidity rises.
    • Temperature
    • Humidity
    • Dew Point
    • VPD *
I starred VPD as this is probably one of the most important factors when growing Cannabis that goes under the radar.
I know when to feed my plants due to the VPD levels in my room. I get my data via a Hygrometer + Smart Humidifier all controlled via app. When VPD increases due to heat the Stomata start to close so therefore the ladies stop their nutrition intake via leafs (foliar feeding pointless at this point) and start pumping those roots for water/nutrition. Depending on the VPD level is how I feed my girls lol.
    • Stomata Opening
As VPD increases, stomata get smaller.
    • CO2 uptake
As VPD increases and stomata get smaller, CO2 uptake gets reduced.
    • Transpiration
As VPD increases, the plant transpires (evaporates from leaves) faster due to the larger difference in vapor pressures between the leaf and the air.
    • Nutrient intake at the roots
As VPD increases, and transpiration increases, the roots pull in more nutrients. The plant is like one connected system of plumbing!
