When I was younger I wanted this song for my mother because my father was abusive. When I got older I got into a relationship with an abusive man as well. I was able to leave and I burst into tears when my new partner sang this to me. I always wanted this safety and love.
This song contrasts nicely with "Music of the Night". It shows the contrast between the two men. This song mentions 'warm', 'daylight', 'summertime', 'light', 'morning', 'day'; all symbolic of light. The Phantom's "Music of the Night" is as much a love ballad to darkness and night as it is to the girl. It repeatedly mentions 'darkness' and 'night' while pleading that the girl 'close your eyes' and 'turn away' from 'garish, cold, unfeeling light'. The Phantom hopes to convince her to join him in his dark world he has created. In the end, he realizes that she can't or won't. In despair he smashes the mirrors(they reflect light), drops the candlestick holder(his only source of light in his underground world) and steps through the broken mirror further into darkness and isolation as the curtain falls behind him shutting out all light.
I've told my friends that if I ever meet a girl and propose to her, I'd serenade her with this song and get on one knee and pull out the ring at the line "anywhere you go let me go too" before the climax.
+Mittens Loves MC haha thanks! I'm a hopeless romantic, so every time I hear this song it reminds me of old time love stories. It's my ideal song to propose to some to (since, you know, Raoul's low key proposing to Christine here).
This scene broke my heart in the movie. I really felt horrible for the Phantom because he truly loved her but He never learned how to properly love someone and how to act when you love someone. (**cough** **cough**, don't murder, **cough** **cough**) If I'm right it was the scene where they were in the rooftop and the phantom was hidden behind a statue.
Exactly. And the Phantom has himself to blame for this. His murder of the stagehand in the previous scene is the catalyst that drives Christine right into Raoul's willing and waiting arms.
This song, and indeed the entire story of the Phantom, was written by ALW to depict a cosmic conflict involving each one born into this world with normal faculties. There is for sure a being of genius with abilities far beyond human comprehension who is indeed an angel of the night - of darkness. His fate is fixed and for him there is no escape or turning back. He seeks to gain sympathy in his hopeless condition from mortals and succeeds through playing upon the empathy of those who never see him face to face. He pursues those who can be deceived into believing he is the highest source of light - of truth - by convincing the unsuspecting that happiness is found in letting their spirits soar in selfish abandon. He knows that only when those he pursues feed upon their self-centered imaginations can he take possession of them. He tries to convince us that he is true source of light - of genuine love, power, and truth - and that the true source of truth and love is selfish and wants to hinder our happiness. This is demonstrated by how the Phantom - a psychopathic murderer - can gain your sympathy and mine. Christine was taken in, as we all are, but she came to the realization that the Phantom's mind is filled with the lust for blood. She waffled back and forth with longing and desire between the Phantom and Raoul, just as our desires go back and forth between doing wrong and doing right. Raoul wanted to protect her and lead her from darkness into the light, and thus Raoul was the Phantom's mortal enemy. ALW was well acquainted with this conflict on a cosmic scale when he wrote the lyrics and developed the plot for this heart-rending musical - The Phantom of the Opera. The question is: Which one - Raoul or the Phantom - does Weber choose as the real hero? I suspect that he chose the Phantom. I think that most people choose likewise. Which one we choose holds eternal consequences either for our good or to our detriment.

Phantom is chosen as the hero. A tragic one, but the hero nonetheless. Raoul loves Christine like one loves a songbird: caged, pretty, pleasant to hear. The Phantom loves Christine like one loves a wild bird: flying way above, fulfilling its dream. But somewhere down the line, the Phantom forgets that he loves Christine first and foremost for her music, and tries to cage her. And that's when it all goes haywire. But then The Phantom makes the ultimate sacrifice in letting Christine go (and then is weirdly rewarded for it in Love Never Dies, but I never actually considered LND as canon, only a great follow-up fanfic...)

I love the phantom so incredibly much. The first time I saw this opera was in London, then Chicago, but there's no place like Broadway. If you ever get a chance, you need to see this. It will make your heart bleed.
i'd say london would actually probably be the best place as that's where itoriginated as a musical (before he died my uncle got to play the french horn in the musical)
