    The answer to Dan's questions about energy and plumbing in the building: quantum energy and quantum plumbing

    • @bjfowler9946
      @bjfowler9946 6 лет назад +7

      The line that Scott should have used when they kept sticking "quantum" in front of everything:
      "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

      I saw an enlarged Duracell battery in the building. Probably takes care of the energy needs.

  • @bjfowler9946
    @bjfowler9946 6 лет назад +27

    I hadn't thought about the plumbing/electricity issues, but as a Structural Engineer I was having some real questions about the foundations of these buildings. They never set the buildings up on anything that was remotely made to support that kind of weight. The lab should have left some large craters, and they literally built a house on sand at the end, which has no chance of lasting. Also, did they have everything in the lab anchored down? Because that thing got tossed around all over the place, and it seems like it should have been a huge mess when they got back inside.

    • @dirus3142
      @dirus3142 6 лет назад +2

      Also why didnt the building, and house, not crumble, twist, and brake apart due to all the lifting, tossing, and what have you. A building's strength is compression strength with some rigidity. They are built to sit in one place. You would thank that the walls would distort and brake apart when being lifted.

    • @anyareyes2663
      @anyareyes2663 6 лет назад +1

      Dirus Nigh I think they assumed that a real house, when shrunk, acts like a doll house. And their beach house annoyed me like what about the electricity or the plumbing or whatever?

    • @bjfowler9946
      @bjfowler9946 6 лет назад

      Dirus Nigh I was going to give them the benefit of the doubt on that one and say they designed it to be really strong and flexible in order to deal with the rapid shrinking and expansion, even though in reality you are totally right. Everything that deals with the world around the building was just where I decided to draw the line.

    • @JohnBainbridge0
      @JohnBainbridge0 6 лет назад +1

      That part where Ghost uses the building to smash through a car window... That can't be good for the structural integrity.

    • @laurelwelch6295
      @laurelwelch6295 6 лет назад +1

      SAME! I'm a civil engineer and that was my first thought (especially when Hank puts the house near the beach). Maybe they're expecting that moving the lab constantly won't cause soil to settle significantly while they're working, but they could lose significant structural integrity if they're in an area prone to sinkholes. And did they install some sort of internal gravity to keep things from moving around? Imagine the damage to the Quantum Tunnel if all that lab equipment started tossing about.

    Ant Man is exactly what the MCU needed to follow up Infinity War, because this is the only franchise that could not take itself too seriously and still have a lot of heart. This movie was light and fun and a much needed breath of fresh air before we plunge back into all the heavy stakes of Infinity War. I don't know how they do it, but even though they're never perfect, Marvel can't seem to do anything wrong.

      What I like about Marvel is that whenever I watch movies, dozes of questions will run through my head nitpicking the story as I watch. And Marvel will usually answer the major ones, right in the following scenes. This is so rarely done nowadays, by any movie, most hoping you wouldn't notice or care. Resulting in some cases, gaping holes in logic. Like for this movie, as they're driving away from Ghost, my mind zeroed in on Ghost using her abilities to hijack a vehicle to give chase - ala The Matrix Revolutions - and why hasn't she done so. It was already pretty far into the chase. And lo and behold, she does so like a minute after that.
      The typical fare of movies I've seen lately, would've abandoned Ghost as the primary antagonist for that chase, and focused on Birch. And have Ghost ambush them later, *but* it would've left the gap in logic of why Ghost isn't using her abilities. That being said, in their initial encounter after having been told to get away, Hope for some reason chooses to duke it out with Ghost instead of shrinking along with the stuff and getting away.
      Well, they're not perfect.

      This is such a bullshit reason to praise a film. It being lighter then IW (which was plenty light literally most of the time except the cliffhanger ending) should not be counted as some actual positive because it has no actual bearing on the film itself. People act like IW was this pitch black descent into darkness when in reality, it was the standard MCU tone with a downer ending.
      In 10 years, will people be like "Oh, when this came out it was lighter than IW so it's soooo good!" There's no logic in that whatsoever.
      Marvel fanboys can find any way to excuse or any MCU film from legit criticism.
      This film is easily one of the most lazy of the entire franchise.

    • @bjfowler9946
      @bjfowler9946 6 лет назад

      Tyler E - I should clarify what I mean by light, because Infinity War was definitely light in most respects, but not when it comes to stakes or characters - the stakes of Infinity War were incredibly heavy and it included a ton of characters who we are already invested in, which meant that the film had a much more serious and weighty feeling even while it was able to remain a fun comic book movie. Ant Man didn't have the weight of high stakes and only had a handful of characters that were invested in, which changed the tone and allowed it to be a much simpler escapist adventure that exists in the same universe, but doesn't get weighed down by lots of characters and the feeling of impending doom.
      The reason I think that is important and is a testament to Marvel's movie making abilities is because the ability to change tones and styles between their movies is what keeps this universe fun and interesting - if every Marvel movie felt the same, they would stop being fun to go to and we would get tired of revisiting the universe over and over again, but by creating films with a variety of styles and tones they continue to keep their appeal fresh. Granted there are a lot of common threads in tone and style, but those commonalities are what holds it together and allows these films to build on one another in a shared universe, it's the fact that films like Ant Man can retain their own unique identity and style that I love.
      I'm not saying you have to like a film that has a lighter tone, but I appreciated and enjoyed it as a fun change of pace as we continue to move forward in this universe.
      And to be fair, I think you're probably right about this being the laziest film in the franchise, but that's why I think it shows Marvel can't make a mistake - it somehow managed to be a pretty good movie that was a lot of fun in spite of the fact that it seems lazy. I think that perceived laziness actually helps to create the casual tone that is one of the things that I really enjoyed about this movie.

    I'm starting to notice this trend ("Solo" and this film make two and that constitutes a trend, right?) in movie criticism all over the Internet in which terms like "fun" and "entertaining" have become derogatory terms. The look on Dan's face when he says this movie was "fun" speaks volumes, as though movies that are just "fun" aren't worth your time or money. And that makes me sad. Don't get me wrong. I love very serious and very artistic films. Stanley Kubrick is one of my top favorite directors. But there shouldn't be anything wrong with movies being "fun".

    • @EwanMakeMovies
      @EwanMakeMovies 6 лет назад +7

      To be honest I feel like certain RUclips movie critics, including but not limited to Dan, have developed a pretty reductive and entitled attitude when it comes to modern blockbuster cinema. I understand that Dan is probably forced to review this kind of fare as part of his role at SJU, and I understand that certain films as of late have been particularly divisive, but at this point I would rather they had someone on who could at least pretend to give a shit.
      I don't need shill fanboys to oversell everything, but I am sick fed up of Dans "I would rather be anywhere else, holier-than-thou" attitude regarding certain franchises.
      It's really taking the wind out of the sails of a lot of videos, and if Dan is unhappy perhaps he could let someone else step in to cover this stuff so he can focus on his box office reporting (he still seems to enjoy discussing the business side of Hollywood)

    • @DarthEd77
      @DarthEd77 6 лет назад +2

      EwanMakeMovies I don't agree with everything you wrote there. I don't think Dan has a "holier-than-thou" attitude at all. I really don't think that's fair to Dan. I do agree that he sometimes comes across as though he'd prefer to be talking about different movies at least. I'm not sure I can blame him there.

      Dan has been specifically using this term for years now and using it in a derogatory way. It bothers me also. I get this movie and others are lighter than the oscar heavy things and deeper themes but they still have substance and in that way i feel like Dan can carelessly sweep it under the "fun" category. It's annoyning and it's something that i think creates a dis connect between audience and critics like him.

    @ 14:30 they start talking about Hanks lab and questioning
    how it's powered. I've seen Ant-Man & The Wasp a few times now and I've noticed a giant duracel battery 🔋attached to a bunch of cable's in Hanks lab.
    This seems to imply that Hank has found a way to expand nd shrink energy itself. So he managed to power his entire building, his whole lab... With a single battery. I kno it's science fiction but damn that's cool.
    Could you imagine what the geniuses of the MCU could accomplish if they all worked together?

    15:24 - Roth and Dan your witty quip about Hank and Tony being "villains" had me laughing in stitches! It reminded me of Eobard Thawne's retort to Barry on the CW's Flash, "Who's the villain NOW, Flash?"
    But seriously when you stop and think about it? Tony's actions in the MCU? And also considering some of his arcs in the comics? Plus, the fact that Hank actually DID make Ultron in the comics?
    Yeah, those aren't exactly the actions of superheroes, and really more like supervillains, eh?
    Brilliant review! I quite enjoyed the numerous cogent and trenchant points you raised! Will you be doing a video about your theories as to the future direction of the overall MCU story thus far?
    What would you like to see in future films? How would you integrate the X-Men and Fantastic Four into the MCU?
    How cool would it be to see Doctor Doom be a recurring character in the MCU?
    Cannot wait for more!

    Here's my MMQ of the writing: rather than separate story threads, make Goggin's character be more central with Ghost working as a contractor for him so she has access to black market quantum tech that might help her. Have her double-cross him to steal the device she acquired for Hope, leading to both groups searching for her and Goliath - Goggins for revenge and the tech, the Pyms for the tech itself. That makes Goggins the bad guy, with the quantum teams being good but desperate people trying to save loved ones. Scott helps them realize they can help each other, reuniting Goliath and Hank, and in act three Goggins shows up and takes everything, leading to both groups teaming up to get the lab back.
    Also needed: at a crucial moment, they get help from a rogue Avenger, so a cameo from Cap, Widow, somebody. The scene helps validate Scott's betrayal of the Pyms by showing that he now has access to other heroes, and you can add a throw-away line where whoever it is says they' get called to help Cap in Ireland (where Vision and Wanda were attacked), giving us a better tie-in to Infinity War's timeline and adding impact to the post-credits scene.

    As for getting himself out of the quantum realm - in the first movie, he got himself out by putting the growth disc in the size regulator. Pym has a line in this film about how he did away with the regulator in the new generation suit(which Scott was wearing at the end); which is why they needed to find the old one todo the tracking.

    I totally agree with you about the implications of the buildings moving locations and changing sizes so easily. I'm a civil engineer and my first thoughts when they kept throwing the lab building into different locations were "What about a proper foundation?" and "Where are they getting power for this lab?"
    If they really are running a quantum tunnel, their energy needs would be staggering and need a stable source in order to run the computers alone, let alone the turbines that they show. If they had the time to explain how all the quantum realm stuff "works" (I still have questions, but that's not the point), then they could have spared a sentence for the lab.
    Overall, it was still a fun movie and a nice respite from Infinity War, but won't place in my top 5 of the MCU.

    The thing with Ant-man and the growth discs is, while it worked before, he didn't remember doing it or how he escaped the first time. So they may have never figured out that was possible. And if he does have some on him, it may not even occur to him to try it this time (especially before his mind gets lost).
    You know, I really think that second post-credit scene would have been way better if the ant got ashed/snapped. At the very least it would've taken the snap questions and theories up a notch lol.

    One difference between a movie that is “fun, pretty good” and a movie that is “awesome, amazing, great” is wether you leave the theater desperate to see it again. I did not enjoy this movie as much as the first, and overall, it was one of my least favorite from the MCU. Not to crap on it too much and ruin it, there was a lot of clunky dialogue and plot points, specifically that scene in the school with Ant-Man being the size of a child and that dubstep music playing. That was cringe worthy in my opinion. Also, why are there brand new cars turned over, burning in an alley? It was the scene towards the end when they were hiding. Definitely did not like the fact that there was zero consequence in any of it, save for the mid-credits scene, which is almost a cop-out in my eyes. And that car that Luis drove...that was heavily cringe-worthy to me as well.
    I'll say, these are my opinions, and I can be pretty critical. It was a fun movie, and maybe the point was to highlight the heroes and be a completely feel-good movie. Felt like this movie was the one that was most geared towards little kids of all of the MCU movies, which is dope for them.

    Just watched it tonight since I was at AX when it dropped and then came home incredibly sick and couldn't see it last Tuesday when my mom bought us tickets to see it. I went into this movie expecting nothing as usual, for Ant-Man anyway, but with all my love for Paul Rudd. In that respect I loved it, laughed, had a good time, and tried my best not to over think all the things that were annoying me. But then the post credit scene happened and I got angry. He's stuck in the quantum realm! And no one knows he's in there! How's he getting out in ANY movie before Avengers IW part 2/Avengers 4?! I was really, really hoping Ant-Man would be in the next Avengers because I love him as a character and I love Paul as an actor, but that just destroyed any hopes I had.
    Then I got out of the film and began to fully process it and I feel the same in regards to there being too much going on. Ghost wasn't even a bad guy, she wasn't a villain, she was a victim of someone elses mistake and just wanted to stop hurting and save her own life, and just by perfect luck Janet came back and fixed her right up. This little side story is the only reason Scott even ended up in the quantum realm to remove him from the only story he could even be a part of next, which looking at the line-up is literally only the next Avengers. So unless they informed someone like Tony or Steve that hey, Scott's stuck in the quantum realm. I don't see how he's getting out unless he just does it himself at some point in which case there's even LESS reason he was left there at the end of this movie!
    These were all the things happening in this movie: Scott staying under house arrest so he's constantly trying to outrun the FBI, saving Janet, avoiding/fighting/saving Ghost/Eva, taking back the Lab over and over again, Scott and Hope's once again underdeveloped love dynamic that's rewarded with yet another kiss right at the end, avoiding/fighting/chasing Burch and his goons, and lastly all the stuff with Luis and his company. It just seemed like way too much and a good half of that could have been removed for a more concise story and maybe in place included more character interactions to better develop their dynamics and overall characters. Still enjoyed it a lot, but just 'cause I liked it doesn't mean it didn't have flaws worth addressing in hopes if we DO one day get a 3rd one maybe they clean it up a bit more.

    Another commentor said something that is close to my thought. What was fun about this movie, and Brilliant by Marvel/Disney is that this movie was fun, could stand on its own, yet is a part of a thread where we don't know where it's going. Nothing, until the mid credit scene was seemingly important to the greater MCU. So, the pay off that the Russo brothers were going for, making the audience wonder what is going to happen and feeling sort of gut punched, is still there. This just let us laugh for a while, then remember the gut punch.
    At the end of this, we still have no idea how Avengers 4 or even Captain Marvel is going to play out. Not a clue. I think the Russo's are enjoying that.

    I really enjoyed the film. I do agree with Dan & Roth that the parts(characters) were great, but the entire story line could have been better. Its 1 of those things that if this was a TV series we'd get those things fleshed out but because its a 2 hour film you can't quite do all of that. After watching the film & what's to come in Captain Marvel & AVENGERS 4 I think this is setting up aside from Dr. Doom & Galactus, The Beyonder, Sin, Kang the Conqueror, Annhilus, Count Nefaria, Amora The Enchantress, Taskmaster, & Morgan Le Fay as villains for the MCU in phase 4 and beyond.

      Zias B Lou I agree the story is very basic but I LOVED GHOST, its complex and there is a discussion to have about why she is doing this (this is the quick version) she is doing it because she just doesn't want to hurt anymore she's been hurting since her father died and she didn't want that anymore. Laurence Fishburne is also complex but it's simple he thought Ghost as a daughter and didn't want to see her hurt. Hope was awesome and I could have a solo movie of just her. I would love to see Cassie as Scott's partner one day. Janet was interesting would like to see more of her and Hank, I also imagine if they do a third they would be back. Walton Goggjns is amazing actor and I hate that he has been "that bad guy" in the last 2 movies he'd done. Paul Rudd man, that's nuff said I think, but seriously he's so funny. Luis talking scene in this one is amazing. I'm just going on and now so I'm going to stop but I liked it.

    I was hoping the "people disappearing because of Thanos" post credit scene in Ant-man would be shot like it was in Infinity War. Starting with Scott's daughter & cutting to his ex wife & her husband, then it goes to Bill. & then Hank while he's with Janet, Scott & Hope. & then Janet goes, Hope & Scott start freaking out. Then Hope disappears as Scott is trying to calm her down. Fade to black.

    For all the people saying "what did Janet eat and how did she poop in the quantum realm?" if we're to go on the movie rules established, since going big drains your energy extra quick going sub-atomic would stretch out your longevity almost indefinitely without having to eat or drink. Antman is not scientific though so stop trying to look at it that way.

    I enjoyed Ant Man and The Wasp. Even if I had to give the logical part of my brain a beer and tell it to chill out.
    I am really disappointing that Marvel dusted Hank and Jan Pym. Marvel missed an amazing opportunity to have Mechil Phypher and Micheal Douglas playing Ant Man and Wasp in Infinity war Part 2 or a 3rd And Man and the Wasp movie. If Liam Neeson can have an old man action series with Taken, then Marvel can make one movie with these two kicking ass.
    Seriously though Marvel brakes it's own rules with shrinking objects. They state that shrunken objects keep their mass yet have the characters pick up a shrunken building as if it's luggage. Also how does that building have power and water if you rip it from it's original foundation and utility hook ups? Wouldn't every thing in that building get destroyed by literally falling all over the place and crashing into things?
    I know have a beer, a hot dog, and chill. It was a silly fun movie. However the preposterous leaps of "logic" on how to fix Ghost's problem is a little to much to ignore. Also how did Jan survive in the micro verse? How did she eat, breath, and shelter herself for 30 years? Damn I cant turn it off.

      Dirus Nigh Mass is different from weight. I assume they lose their weight as they shrink but retain their mass in a more compact way.
      The buildings shrinking make no sense but eh we can assume that they’re bolted down. Hank is smart so I guess he made sure to make their lab self sustaining and bolted down. It’s a big assumption but oh well.

Just one man's opinion. Love your stuff
