Totally- was feeling bad for Dan on the desk earlier with the ladies with the new hair colour- new eyeglass frames? (I'm a baldy so get the hair colour envy lol)
I am very not surprised that Jessie Marltin didn’t like Sorry To Bother You. She also didn’t like Hereditary. No judgement, though! Also, you guys got me stupidly excited for The Meg
Hey guys! I’m living in China right now and I have to chime in about Dying to Survive! I haven’t seen it yet (but probably will in this next week) but I’ve had various Chinese friends of mine recommend it to me in a way they haven’t recommended any other Chinese movie to me. They say that it’s unlike any other film they’ve seen in over 10 years and is a breath of fresh air among the typical romcom/soap opera themes prevalent among most Chinese domestic films. I’ll definitely be tuning in next week on Charting to see how it does but in the mean time keep doing the good work! Love all of you guys here at Screen Junkies 😊
Really like the dynamic going on in this. Dan is just really good at breaking down the numbers, and Roth is good at bouncing questions and counter points off him, and keeping him from getting too far in the weeds. Keep up the good work.
While I never expected Ant Man and The Wasp to do Black Panther or even Spider Man Homecoming numbers, my thinking was Ant Man being in Civil War would expose more people to the character and would lead to higher numbers. So while it did improve on the opening of the first but I didn't expect it to the lowest MCU sequel opening. After I left The Dark World, I remember thinking that they didn't know what to do with Thor and needed to do something different and Ragnarok was a very welcome change. I don't feel like Ant Man is in need of a tonal reboot in the same way but maybe Marvel will feel different based on the box office.
I'm surprised they didn't catch on that every 3rd film in the MCU changes the dynamics. Iron Man, Thor, and even Avengers 3 had huge game changing elements in them.
I was trying to find “Sorry to Bother You” this past weekend because I knew it was coming out not realizing it this limited until this video. Looking forward to watching.
I think they will still do a third one. The MCU has done trilogies so far and I would think they would do the same for Ant Man and the Wasp. I agree with Roth and Dan that they should either budget accordingly or maybe reinvent it a little like Thor. These aren't flops for the MCU, heck who would have thought that a super hero with the name Ant Man would do so well at the theater in the first place!
Now that Netflix is so common and has made excellent documentaries so readily available, do you think this is a big reason for so many documentaries doing so well theatrically this year? And do you think this trend will keep going for the next few years?
Ant-man and The Wasp only have to make 620 million and that's a hit right in line with what Iron Man 2 and Thor 2 did and a 100 million more than the 1st Ant-man did.
I think the World Cup delaying the opening over seas is the biggest issue with the opening numbers. How do you take those delayed openings into account?
Heh I had expected this comment to be buried with posts regarding Roth's new hair before anyone notices and thanks for the informative content you provide
I'm not generally a fan of documentaries, particularly bio-pics but I have to admit this has been a great year for them. I really enjoyed The Director & The Jedi, a behind the scenes making of The Last Jedi that premiered at SXSW. I can't believe it went straight to blu-ray. Given the level of interest & controversy I thought it was going to be huge. It also helped that it was well made & enjoyable so I hope more people get to see it.
Love the new hair, Roth! It will be interesting to see how the box office numbers play out as the summer continues, especially once the highly-anticipated "The Meg" finally swims into theatres.
Without question, after the performance of “Ocean’s 8”, we will see an “Ocean’s 9” and possibly an Ocean’s 10 which would work perfectly as a companion trilogy to Soderbergh’s films. The oceans 8-13 box set!
You forgot to mention that the first purge and this franchise is not just a Blumhouse movie, Michael Bay and his company under Platinum Dunes also produce this movie and the franchise too
I can't imagine they're too surprised by the numbers considering Ant-Man has been treated as something of an afterthought character. I don't mean they don't care or they don't try, but what I mean is that he's not really an Avenger, having only showed up for one fight in Civil War, and he wasn't in Infinity War at all. It gives the impression that he's easily skippable if you're not a fan of his. For the record, I loved both the first one and this one. I just can see why it's not as big as Dark World.
Is there any insight to how the medium of release affects these numbers? I wanted to go see Ant-man and the Wasp on Thursday evening, but all showings at a decent time were in 3D and I am over 3D. I waited to see it at noon on Saturday which is an odd time to see a movie.
It would be helpful to have something like an icon (like a dollar with a red X over it) on movies on the charts that indicates that a given movie has stopped earning revenue and won't be rising on the charts any more.
Roth ur hair looks amazing. I mean, ur analysis is on point, as always u guys are great, but also ur hair 😍In the most respectful way imaginable. Dan urs is prolly pretty cool too.
Roth, as a Beatles fan (or at least saying you grew up with it), do you like "A Hard Day's Night" or "Help!" ? I just watched "Help!" the other day, and it's still hilarious! Still holds up. Like a Monty Python movie
Is it sad that I immediately noticed that Roth changed her blazer from SJU to Charting? I remembered because it matched her fun new hair. Even though that new blazer looks really good!
Ant-Man has yet to appear in an Avengers film, and had the shortest screen time among the heroes in Civil War. So no surprise on the bad news. They should've at least added Hawkeye in the movie.
I think people just need to stop saying that it underperformed though, just it didn't overperform. It did exactly what most people expected it to do. The fact that a comic book character named Ant-Man can come anywhere near a 76 million opening weekend is amazing. Prior to the MCU getting a big opening weekend for a comic book movie not titled Batman, Superman, X-Men or Spider-Man was a herculaneum task. I'm sure if they do a third Ant-Man in a few years it'll come closer to 90 million opening weekend. Movie has essentially made back its budget already and hasn't even opened in all international markets yet.
Marvel and Feige seem to be making choices many like. I will let them go until they don't work once or more. P.S. I also like many parts of Hawkeye and Squirrel Girl, not joking. Edited this because smart tv allows spelling mistakes.
+Joe McKim Not sure that anyone used the word "underperformed" either. The point is they could've supported the character better. Ragnarok got a huge boost by bringing in a big draw like the Hulk. After Infinity War's cliffhanger, most people are only concerned about the development of that storyline and felt that this side story is insignificant. Wasp was the main new draw in the marketing, and yet look what happens to her by the end. Perhaps if they incorporated a Back to the Future 2 type of scenario where the events of Avengers 3 actually intersect w/ this movie, then it would've done way better than Thor 2.
The thing is Ant-Man didn't get the Avengers boost that all the other Marvel movies got. He had a small appearanc in Civil War and only got a mention in Infinity War. So it's not fair to expect a huge improvement on the first movie's numbers.
Roth looking cute with that new hairdo. She looks like 5 years younger with this cut, though. I've been talking with my friends for the past 4 or 5 marvel movies how crazy it is for a studio to have nothing but #1 hits. Their success is insane.
I think they should have released Ant-Man and the Wasp in August like the first film and the first GotG! Again every week is crowded out by multiple films vying for the same audience. Add the holiday of the 4th of July and its understandable why it didn’t do triple digits. Either way its still a hit.
Roth looking stylish! Still amazing that Ant-man and the wasp isn’t near the top of marvels comic book characters yet it did so great. I really would like it if Marvel Studios made a Netflix tv show into a movie.
Roth your new hair color looks so good! Love this show, always look forward to Dan and Roth talking about the box office.
Dammit I was going to mention Dans Hair
You think it is close to her actual hair colour? If yes, I hope she just let's it grow out. Suits her way better than the fake blond.
Totally- was feeling bad for Dan on the desk earlier with the ladies with the new hair colour- new eyeglass frames? (I'm a baldy so get the hair colour envy lol)
Simon James
I think a black leather motorcycle jacket would look good on Roth.
Yeah completely agree. Awesome hair. I had to do a double take though 😂
Roth's hair is certified fresh
Woah Roth! Love the new hair
Roth you changed your hair. I like it.
Can we all just agree that Roth has always been a 10 but this new hair and new look is to die for? 😍😍😍

I really can’t wait for that dumpster fire. I know it’s going to be more over the top than the Rocks movie, with his magical prosthetic leg.
damn Roth looking FINE AF!
Really like Roth Spy/Assassin looks.
Damn, Roth was born for this hairstyle. It looks sooo good.
I am very not surprised that Jessie Marltin didn’t like Sorry To Bother You. She also didn’t like Hereditary. No judgement, though!
Also, you guys got me stupidly excited for The Meg
My crush on Dirty Aunt Roth increased today...
The first 2 seconds I'm like: 'Where's Roth....Ohhhh....there she is!'
I think it will have good legs® since it's breezy and super enjoyable. Everyone in my theater really seemed to love it!!

Roth i love your hair so much!!!!!!!
Really like the dynamic going on in this. Dan is just really good at breaking down the numbers, and Roth is good at bouncing questions and counter points off him, and keeping him from getting too far in the weeds. Keep up the good work.
This is such a great look for you Roth! Had to come in her just to say that. Love it! Great show too, both of you - keep it up!

Love your new look Roth! I could listen to you two talk about charts all day!
Roth looking good with the hair today
I made a little noise when I saw Roth's hair. Love it.
roth loving your new do!
Thanks for keeping me entertained on my lunch break guys! another awesome show!
Love this show, and really lovin the darker hair on Roth, and her jacket is pretty nice too.
The First Purge didnt have the advert for the show in my viewing in England which is maybe because it doesnt have a confirmed network that is showing.
Ant-man and The Wasp only have to make 620 million and that's a hit right in line with what Iron Man 2 and Thor 2 did and a 100 million more than the 1st Ant-man did.
Yeah I'm pretty sure it will have great legs(tm) in fact 6 of them!
Dan's description of Sorry to Bother You sounds like a Terry Gilliam film - Brazil or Baron Munchausen and the like.
I saw Roth's new look in today's live but it still had me do a double take. She's gorgeous as always.
I don't know if you realize how great this show is. Thank you for making it
Lets talk about that hair!
I really wanna see Whitney after Roth's recommendation.
Great episode as always guys!
Roth's cut & color looks so good! It's a "Yes" on every level. Nice jacket too.
Love the hair and the jacket Roth!
Great show as usual, thanks guys.
I think the World Cup delaying the opening over seas is the biggest issue with the opening numbers. How do you take those delayed openings into account?
23:23 Dan doesn't think Star Wars and Star Trek should mixed while wearing a shirt that mixes the 2 franchises -_-
Touche´ - Dan

I wonder if Dying to Survive will have a release here in the US? Sounds interesting.
One of my favorite SJ shows! Roth, LOVE the new hair! So pretty
Everybody is talking about Roth's hair (which looks GREAT) but I think we're all forgetting about Dan. Nice hat, Dan!
Roth’s hair looks great!
Love the new hair, Roth! It will be interesting to see how the box office numbers play out as the summer continues, especially once the highly-anticipated "The Meg" finally swims into theatres.
In Germany there was no teaser for the Purge Series in the Movie:O
Omg Roth I love your hair so much it's so flattering on you!
Without question, after the performance of “Ocean’s 8”, we will see an “Ocean’s 9” and possibly an Ocean’s 10 which would work perfectly as a companion trilogy to Soderbergh’s films. The oceans 8-13 box set!
I can't even listen because i am in love with roth's hair...i LOVE it!!!!!

Roth your hair is awesome :)
Roth out here looking like a million dollars

I love your hair Roth! The cut is so cute and of course the color
what EVER Roth did today. Hair, makeup, that awesome jacket, WOW she looked incredible!
So. I'm definitely NOT the only one who thinks that Roth is becoming more and more fabulous every single day.
Another comment giving love to Roth’s hair!
Wow! I love Roth's new look! It looks great! 😎
It would be helpful to have something like an icon (like a dollar with a red X over it) on movies on the charts that indicates that a given movie has stopped earning revenue and won't be rising on the charts any more.
Roth your hair looks really good, adding to an already great show.
Roth's new hair do looks really fantastic! the shorter hair frames her face nicely and the darker color suits her well - two thumbs up 👍
45k on 16 screens is very, very good. It would be a pretty good number on 4 or 5 screens
Roth ur hair looks amazing. I mean, ur analysis is on point, as always u guys are great, but also ur hair 😍In the most respectful way imaginable. Dan urs is prolly pretty cool too.
Roth's new hair color and cut is tremendous!!!!
Roth!!! Your hair!!! Looks so good!!!
Roth, as a Beatles fan (or at least saying you grew up with it), do you like "A Hard Day's Night" or "Help!" ? I just watched "Help!" the other day, and it's still hilarious! Still holds up. Like a Monty Python movie
Roth killing that New haircut. Dan always amazing with charting
This is Roth’s “take me seriously as a critic” hair.
How much do you guys think Skyscraper will make in its opening weekend?
I love how Dan says it would be confusing to mix Star Wars and Star Trek while wearing a Wrath of Khan designed like A New Hope
Is it sad that I immediately noticed that Roth changed her blazer from SJU to Charting? I remembered because it matched her fun new hair. Even though that new blazer looks really good!

Ant-Man and the Wasp did 35% higher then the first Ant-Man, it was by no means a failure.

Roth's new hair cut and colour makes her look like a big time reporter for the New York Times!
Am I the only one noticing Dan's gesture to end the video?
Roth, love the hair. Great look for you.
Roth your hair looks so pretty!
Charting with Dan! is the best way to end a monday
Roth is rocking that hair and I honestly need a change myself so you are giving me ideas :D
Roth !! Your hair ! I love it!
She looks like a character in a TV show (yes, that’s random but that’s the first thought I had).
The thing is Ant-Man didn't get the Avengers boost that all the other Marvel movies got. He had a small appearanc in Civil War and only got a mention in Infinity War. So it's not fair to expect a huge improvement on the first movie's numbers.

catch all of us screenjunkies bomb the megs box office in 32 days
Roth looking cute with that new hairdo. She looks like 5 years younger with this cut, though.

Loved AatW, love Roth's hair color, love Dan's shirt.
Roth! I love your hair! And oh hi Dan! Good charting 👍🏻

I gasped when I heard you guys haven't seen Hotel Transylvania. ROTH, YOU WOULD LOVE IT SO MUCH!
Roth looking stylish!
Still amazing that Ant-man and the wasp isn’t near the top of marvels comic book characters yet it did so great.
I really would like it if Marvel Studios made a Netflix tv show into a movie.
Loving the hair Roth!! 👍👍
