    • @awesomecoolepicawesome
      @awesomecoolepicawesome 5 лет назад +384

      Think what you will but they at least had reason to believe they had a claim. Renly is just like fuck this I want to be king and thought he’d build an army and wage a war, he was a baby. Truly the stupidest character in the series.

    • @libertinarey
      @libertinarey 5 лет назад +87

      @@awesomecoolepicawesome That's more then the Targaryens ever had. They didn't even have an army, nor were they even born into the land they ended up ruling, they just had medieval wmds which no one could do anything about.
      At least for Renly, he had a lot of popular support to back his ambition, people wanted to see him on the throne without having to be threated with horrible gruesome death.

    • @libertinarey
      @libertinarey 5 лет назад +202

      @Not Alfie Stannis has the strongest claim of all since he is next eldest of the Baratheon line, by medieval succession laws you can't get a better claim then that.
      Agree with you about Daenarys though, her family won their throne through the right of conquest and lost it in the same way, so she has to start again as a foreign conqueror with no legit claim. As is the trend of targaryens though you don't need to follow the rules when you got dragons to burn anyone you disagree with.

    • @Derekivery
      @Derekivery 5 лет назад +86

      What "claim" did Robert have to the throne, he won it by force. Renly (or anyone with an army) could make the same claim.

    • @alessandragonzales8190
      @alessandragonzales8190 5 лет назад +67

      @@Derekivery Big Bob's "claim" to the throne was his family's distant relation to the Targs. That relationship provided the justification for some of the more legalistic lords to side with him over Aerys (he's the grandson of Rhaelle Targaryen, which makes him the great-grandson of Aegon V Targaryen).
      As to whether the Targs had any claim to the throne, yes and no. They don't because they were an outside invading force. They DO because "the throne" - as in the Iron Throne, the Kingship of all seven kingdoms as opposed to the individual kingships of each - didn't exist before the Targs came. Because the Targaryens literally created the "one kingdom" out of the seven, and thus created the position of king over all, the right to the Iron Throne starts and ends with their bloodline.

      Maybe I need to rewatch the season, but I just can't see Renly as king. It seems like he only took the role because he felt like he had a chance to win. At least Stannis, the Lannisters and Robb had other goals in mind beyond just "I want to be king".
      Even as a lord (and a warden? I can't remember.) Renly's scenes show him more interested in lounging about the council meetings and banging Loras. I don't see any real sense of responsibility in him.

    • @RXdash78
      @RXdash78 5 лет назад +15

      It was more than reasonable. Stannis had the only legit claim. Renly's claim was based on "i really want to be king because reasons. Also I did nothing to save ned stark and I refuse to pump out a brat so I am guaranteeing another succession crisis."
      Stannis was essentially giving renly all he tried to steal as long as he was willing to wait for it.
      If that beautiful dumbass had a lick of sense or patience, he would have gotten everything he wanted.

      He was in Storm's End, starving with the rest of the city and although never taking it too seriously, was quite a capable lord on his own.
      Stannis wasn't the man his brother was, either. Robert Baratheon would have taken King's Landing before help could arrive, even the Hound had said that when Stannis was delayed by Blackwater Rush.

    • @Carlos-ln8fd

      Even though he wasn't the rightful heir, Renly got the people from the Stormlands and the Reach to support him, creating a formidable army filled with men and women who would die for him. That's more kingly to me than Stannis, who had trouble even getting the lords surrounding Dragonstone to support him. Being a leader is not just about fighting but getting people on your side and uniting them.
      In the books, Renly doesn't even ask Robb Stark to surrender the north as long as he promises fealty. He was a clever, flexible leader that would have probably won the war if his brother had not relied on dark magic.

      Better than Robb, Joffrey and even Stannis. Stannis never understood that a king is not a judge to rule over the realm.
      'What claim my brother had when he took the throne, I ask you. He took it because he could. There is my claim, Lady Stark. All the chivalry of the South rides with me. And I want you to deliver your son a message. I intend to be a king, and being a king of a broken realm is not my intention. I'll name him lord of the North, I'll let him call himself the King in the North if he likes it so much, the title bears no meaning, so much so if he bends the knee to me and calls me his overlord'
      Renly wasn't a soft-weak craven as he was portrayed in the show. He was around 6'5'', quite strong, a pure reflection of Robert Baratheon.

Time and time again in Game of Thrones it's shown that the people care little for who sits the throne as long as they aren't illogically cruel or bloodthirsty and don't adversely affect their lives. Stannis is rigid, yes, but he'd be fiscally responsible, just and capable of making measured decisions for the betterment of the realm. His detachment and obsessive sense of responsibility would have made him the perfect king in practice yet ironically made it impossible for him to secure the kingship.
      While I don't think Renly would be an awful king relatively speaking he's clearly more in it for the trappings that come with the crown and not the responsibility of wearing the crown. In practice he'd possibly grow to be a less debauched version of Robert. Stannis is a different beast, but then again, in Clash of Kings he was a different man to what he was in later books you know. He regrets killing his brother in the books. That's the main difference between Stannis in the show and in the books. In the show he is becoming more and more spiteful, vindictive and lustful, Mel's puppet if you will, while in the books he is becoming more likeable as the story progresses.

      @@ForsakenDreamer7 At this point, Ser Davos hasn't had a chance to really stand out yet (at least as much as he would in the future). Renly would need seasoning in case of potential kingship and Ser Davos is not a power-hungry man - he'd have been very content simply being Admiral, I think, and his skills would have suite that role well.

    With a series like this, good is a hard word to properly define. Of all the people who want to be king, Stannis would be the one most likely to put the interests of the realm first. He would be harsh, but fair, and would be pretty much incorruptible. People argue that the red priestess has him wrapped around her finger, but that's debatable.
    Stannis is my favorite character too, and he's got a really fun story arc.

He didn't stain his honor for gain, or glory, not for ambition, but to save his two defenseless daughters. That's the kind of man Ned was. Hypocritical or not, things aren't in black and white, Ned lived and died honorably, even in his last acts, which dishonored him, still was the honorable thing to die. Better to save his daughters then stubbornly be beheaded with his kids following.

    If you understand medieval succession, Stannis naming Renly his heir is not so much of a courtesy. In agnatic succession, the younger brother will always inherit over his niece. Additionally, while it was within a king's right to revoke ancestral titles off of unfaithful vassals, in a state of total civil war this was ignored, especially if your main opponent is your brother. Also, think about Renly's strength. He has tens of thousands of swords and horses behind him, all the chivalry of the Reach, and the second greatest house backing him. To quote Renly "Here is my claim, 100,000 swords, just as good as Robert's"

  • @prasadgr9193

    It is strange that Stannis never leverages his House Florent connection. According to GRRM, Houses Florent and Tyrell never see along; House Florent was angry that the Reach was granted to House Tyrell, bypassing House Florent. Florents view the Tyrells as lowly usurpers. Would have been interesting seeing Tyrells and Florents on opposite sides.

    • @prasadgr9193
      @prasadgr9193 5 лет назад

      Actually the Tyrell-Florent rivalry would explain why Renly was so interested in the Iron Throne despite Stannis' presence. Lady Olenna was the one influencing Renly through Loras and then Margarey so that the Tyrells are not divested from their Lordship of the Reach by Stannis through intervention by the Florents. At the end, it was all politics.

    • @gooby1673
      @gooby1673 5 лет назад +1

      Olenna never supported Renly. Not in the books, and not in the show as well. Also, in the books it is Mace Tyrell and Olenna who decide together, but the show ruined Mace and made him retarded. The real Mace is supposed to be a big powerful-looking fat man full of arrogance and entitlement.

    Remember this is all Loras’s fault. He pushed Renly to claim Kingship. So much could of been avoided. That being said, what would of happened to Westeros if Melissandre governed the seven Kingdoms? She would probably saw the Lord of Light’s vision about the night King. And convinced Stanis to take up arms against the wall. Then that leaves Daenerys. So many angles.
