If your interested ,there is a book about a couple who make cedar mats (and there are photos ) and tells the story of their life around Minnesota and Canada in the early 1900's,'Making the Carry',by Timothy Cochrane.
I harvested some cedar for splitting for a canoe and immediatly notice how great the bark was and saved and processed it. I then tried looking up videos and could only find west coast people using their cedar bark. Nothing about eastern white bark.

that tree isn't going to survive. More than 1/3 of the circumference will kill it.
He addresses that. That tree was chosen as it would later be cut down and its wood used for other projects.
