  • In this video: After collecting the bark from the woods and drying for a couple of day, soak it for at least 3 hours before cutting and splitting. First cut before first split. After splitting, then cut into 1/2", 1/4" or 1/8" widths. Use only a few blades with the Table Top Lace cutter, or you will break the cutter. To cut 1" pieces use three blades spaced 1" apart. To cut the 1" wide strip into 1/8" use 9 blades and to cut 1/4" use 5 blades.

    This was awesome! Thank you so much! I am Coast Salish/Sto:lo and just started using cedar! I learned once but needed a refresher on the basics! This was perfect and I think the only video online done by an actual indigenous dude versus the other ones where they're not native and seems like they have no clue what they are doing. Huy Chewx a!

    So glad to have come across this video. Please describe how to remove the outer bark of the cedar tree. Is it done from a fresh cut tree or is the bark dried then removed? I have a downed tree which I want to save the bark for basket weaving. I learned some helpful techniques from the video, but don't have the tool to split strips of bark so all will be done with a single blade. Thank you for further helps.

      Use a hatchet or knife to remove the bark from tree. See video on harvesting cedar bark. ruclips.net/video/7-4cuDrYgi0/видео.html

    I’m Tlingit living in Arkansas with 0 first hand experience with native arts and people. My weaving knowledge is only from online and I can say I’ve wasted two large cedar bark peels trying to split it half ass

    we are cutting cedar trees for poles, and i want to keep the bark, but since i have a lot to process, i'm wondering if i can keep it rolled with it's outer bark and peel it later when rehydrated? any other suggestions?❤

      Hello, It's best you crack off as much of the outer bark as possible. After its re-hydrated it's very difficult to remove the inner bark, as it turns to wood.

    Do you have to soak the bark after harvesting or weaving or do you do all this when it’s dried?

    • @Gannyaa
      @Gannyaa  3 года назад +2

      dry after harvesting. then when you need to weave with it, soak bark for 3 hours

    Todd is the cedar dry when you cut the bark or split it . Do you split it first?

    • @Gannyaa
      @Gannyaa  4 года назад +2

      Soak the bark at least 3 hours in cold water prior to cutting. After cutting to 1" widths, then split.
