His overhead shots with the drone are awesome but how does he get them when on his bike or walking with no camera in his hand?? It's almost like someone is following him. I'd love to have him explain his technique some day. Hope he continues doing whatever he's doing as he is AMAZING in everything he does. This is and has been for many months, my Sunday morning treat, here in Canada.
Hi Martin, I live in Trentino Alto Adige and I might have an answer to your question concerning the "not 90°" corners in your cabins. As you notices they are in the mountain top direction, they were built like that to make avalanches as well as water slide on the sides of the cabins. In my valley, most stone cabins are like that. Great job with the video, as always.
This intro was, oh, so very beautiful. On to cabin #2 with so many possibilities. Thank you, Martijn. And friendly greetings to all the Community here.

My husband was watching this exquisite video with me, Martjin. When it came to your drawing of your crooked out of square walls in cabin #2, he said all the homes in Key West when living there as a little boy were built with slightly crooked out of square walls to withstand the winds. And pegs were used instead of nails so the homes would have more flexibility against the strong winds. Perhaps there’s a Key Wester in your following who can confirm my husband’s recollection. Your new bench is classic for the setting of your cabins and the landscape---very "old world" style and just flat out heartwarming. I can't wait for the permit to come through for the second cabin but at the same time I dread the roof work that you will be having to do. Even with all the help you had on the first cabin it was a major effort. All the very best to you, your plans, and your guests.
oH Please have Don Johanson back up in his paradise, to walk over and assist with massive slab stones on roof. Missing his postings, hope hope for him to share again. Great friend to channel.
Martijn, what you’re looking for is a curb mounted skylight. This way the flashing on the roof is separated from the actual skylight flashing, and you can properly watertight the transition from the roof to the curb. Then you can mount a standard Velux or equivalent skylight, opening or fixed, to the curb and not have to worry about roof drainage issues. A quick Google search for a curb mounted diamond skylight should show you a number of examples. Also, I’ve seen a couple of people suggesting a light tube style of skylight…I agree, these are a great alternative to a traditional skylight, and are quite unobtrusive.

One idea is to place the cast iron stove on the ground floor, with the pipe running through both floors, from bottom to top. This way, the heat generated by the stove will travel to the floor above and the smoke will come out through the roof. Heating will be quick in both rooms.
Agreed. That greenhouse is truly a work of art. If Martijn's going to do it at all, he's going to do it as perfectly beautiful as possible. (Which is way more perfectly beautiful than most people do.)
In the south of France old farm house never have straight corners or walls. The myth is that it was done to keep the devil out of the house. Apparently the devil loves 90° degrees corners, that's why they make it smaller (too narrow for the devil) or wider (too cold). Not sure if that story is the same in Italy.
My weekly trip to the Italian mountains never disappoints! Beautiful scenery, beautiful music and an old friend comes to visit and help. Life doesn't get any better than that. The finest restaurants in the world cannot compete with the views you have when you cook outside and eat at the stone table. Looking forward to the next cabin and I really hope you get your permit soon to start your workshop.
Our Sunday ritual….cup of coffee while living vicariously through you. What a joy it has been following the growth and transformation of your beautiful slice of heaven. Thank you for allowing us to share portions of your journey.❤
Yep. I don't always catch it Sunday, b/c I tend to read for hours on weekends, but I do eventually catch it the following Monday. It's the most refreshing channel of those I follow. Wish I had similar ambition, confidence and courage.
Martijn, you are successfully adding layers of sound that add texture to the visual components ‘- the rasping of the brush’s bristles adds dimension and texture to the seat being hand wrought. This depth of sound adds depth to the viewer’s sense of the moment. Your work reminds me of Dickens sketching morning scenes with words as he sat in the street. Very enjoyable for me. Please accept this compliment - masterful composition.
I hope that 100 years from now, Martijn's great-grandchildren are still using that bench, sitting and watching the sunrise while eating their breakfast. Wouldn't that be stellar?
I'm so glad you got yourself an e-bike and that you are loving it. I have a regular bike and an electric cargo bike. If I lived somewhere like you, I would also have a bike you just got. They are a game changer. And anyone who thinks it's "cheating" doesn't really understand how most people use electric bikes. You still pedal. You still exercise and work hard. It just allows you to do longer rides and/or tougher rides that you wouldn't usually do without the electric assist.
I’ve been away for the last 2 episodes and missed being in the Italian alps immensely…thank you Martijn for being such a solid rock for many of us in a time when we are needing a safe haven and a well of goodness to draw from…much gratitude and love sending your way …aloha 🙏🏽❤️🌺🐝
Dear Martinj, this has to be one of my favourites of all your videos. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and soul for all you do to share your life in the mountains. The music, the strings, this video hit so much within, and it was so wonderful. Thank you again and may YAH Most High continue to shower you with blessings brother.
It's just outstanding how you film, edit, and tell your story. You really are underrated and easily have one of the best channels on this platform. Thank you so much for all your hard work!
Your videos are unbelievably beautiful….wow, you deserve every red cent you get from this channel! And much more! What a talented man you are. Thank you for sharing this with us.
I love watching your woodwork projects. When I was in primary school I asked to be allowed to do woodwork rather than "domestic science" but was refused because I was (still am!) a girl and woodwork was "for boys". I've grown to be a woman with a workshop, but I'm entirely self-taught, from books, and after decades - I'm 64 now - my woodworking is still quite wonky. I'm learning a lot from observing your craftsmanship. Maybe I'll graduate to building a stable bench one day, even if it's not as beautiful as yours...
It’s great when new people find this channel and have many questions. It shows how it draws us in to be here every weekend, some of us lucky to be here from the start. One latecomer was confused thinking it was a home improvement “how to” show and didn’t like all that other life-of-Martijn stuff. 😂. How sweet it is to have this soul filled space every week, even if only to hear the rooster’s adolescent crow and see water fall.
I just discovered your channel, and I've binge watched the last 2 years!! It's so relaxing, interesting and engaging. I live not so far from you, in Canavese, but I'm a foreeing too because I arrived in Piedmont only 12 years ago from Rome. Just a tip: the type of fig tree you have taken will ripen in September with very sweet fruits. Don't plant it too close to the greenhouse, because the fig tends to invade everything. It is also a very resilient plant. Don't be afraid to plant it in the ground, just cover it in winter for the first year or two at most. Keep it up, you're a sight for the heart!!
Have you thought about building bunker beds, one on top of the other, you could have 2 +2 in one side wall with locker space underneath like they have in the hostels. In one small room you can build 8. If you had 2 side walls 2+2, and 2+2. In each area you install a cell charger, a light, and a small shelf to place a book, food and such. Since you have guests I think it would be a good idea.❤❤❤
Martijn …. Great to see you back on a bike. Looks like an Ebike…..? The narrow mountain roads look like heaven ! Thanks for adding so much to the lives of your viewers! Best. Phil A
I have a small garden in the country. Every weekend I feel fresh and calm when I spend my time there. I can understand your sense, when you are completely living out there, in the middle of the nature. It's awesome bro!
With the new eating & contemplation bench completed, out comes the creative Martijn to treat us with these tantalizing plans for the second cabin! How exciting is this!? Perfect to begin with an old friend to start the process of decluttering the wood while preparing the pile for winter use. One thing flows seamlessly into the next, which opens to the next along with nature’s timing & the breath of humans! Thank you Martijn.

Excellent tracking drone aerials in this piece. What a perspective. It used to cost me $600/hour to shoot from a chopper. Now you young dudes have the affordable tools anytime you want. Fantastic,
Hi Martijn, you asked for ideas for the diamond-shaped skylights in the second cabin. Now what if you have several layers of glass glued together, shaped like one of the stone roof tiles and use this glass stone as the roof stone. Then you will be fine with drainage and the like. Just an idea. Good luck. I admire your project, your craftsmanship and your positive mindset. MVG, Dirk de Lange
Hi to Martijn and everyone hoping you are all well. Thank you once again Martijn for showing us the fantastic mountain views, Italy sure is a beautiful country. I'm almost as excited as Martijn to see how his new venture progresses. Your new bench and window boxes are beautiful.
Let's see, you are master craftsman, a master gardener, a master roof builder and who knows what else. You are an amazing force of nature, and as a mother, I know your parents are extremely proud of you! Love and blessings to you ❤
Looking forward to another year or two of construction of your zen life in the mountains Martijn. Because of the short growing season there a grow light in the green house will really accelerate the growth and production. Keep up the great work with the videos! they are part of my Sunday routine.
We love all of your video’s but when you get on your bike a special magic happens. Almost as special as when family comes to visit. We fell for you with your bike packing videos and have been hooked ever since! Thanks for sharing!!
I have seen skylights mounted diagonally in many restorations, most of the time for a "modern look." In this case, it would be a great choice as it would enhance the aesthetics and totally suit the structure.
Martijn you are a goddamn artist. Literally every work of yours is a art itself. Be it your youtube videos, your greenhouse🤌, your every drone shot etc. etc. list goes on. I have been watching you from your first compilation video to till now and it just astonishes be how your brain works. I mean the thought of me going alone and learning all of this from scratch just seems incomprehensible. And surely you would have faced difficulties to your path here and i am just curious how you handle those things. I would love a youtube video where just talk about your thought process to do things and how you learn new things and literally perfect. I am sure those insights would be help full everyone watching your videos. Hopeful you consider this, otherwise great work keep it up.

Martijn, you did an amazing job with your first cabin, I know the second one is going to be as beautiful. The difference is that, you don have to live in a tent now. You have made a beautiful place to live. We watched you work so hard on the first one, dragging rock and dirt out, leveling the floor and so on.

Amen
Imagine the bench, discovered 100yrs from now, in an antique store. No one would understand its unique place in the world. 😊
I hope that 100 years from now, Martijn's great-grandchildren are still using that bench, sitting and watching the sunrise while eating their breakfast. Wouldn't that be stellar?
@@janiedillingham3190ok, Martijn has no children, that's not gonna change. Your quest for a fantasy future is kaput.😊
@@mezanian LOL!!! It ain't MY fantasy future. I am way past that point in life.
Hola Martín, que excursión tan preciosa, que cascadas, gracias por compartirlo. Te ha quedado un banco muy bonito y artesano, me encanta😊
The waterfall view, to die for. A new chapter.
You have many talents and many skills. I look forward to my Sunday morning with you.
It's just outstanding how you film, edit, and tell your story. You really are underrated and easily have one of the best channels on this platform. Thank you so much for all your hard work!
May I suggest? To the bottom of the bench legs, add a strip of horizontal fiber wood. They will protect the legs and you can change them when worn
a good time to live in the era of internet for sharing our beautiful world
Your videos are unbelievably beautiful….wow, you deserve every red cent you get from this channel! And much more! What a talented man you are. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Breathtaking first minutes! WOW, thank you for that natural high!
I love the idea like a library with chairs, lots of books an open space for relaxation and creation.
The view as the drone crested the ridge was heart stopping.
I mean, I could totally live in that greenhouse (it's so beautiful!)
It's awesome bro!
i really enjoy the sound design of your films. thanks for making the extra effort.
I find living in the clouds fascinating and serene.
The walk to Rifugio section was literally breathtaking
Martijn's channel is a cut above the rest. Your videos are just masterful! I'd be in heaven just lingering in that stunning greenhouse.❤
I liked getting in the car and going to town; seeing the waterfall; and planning the next project. The girls love being with their dad; what fun to see them following you around. Thank you Martijn, another wonderful day in paradise.
Excellent tracking drone aerials in this piece. What a perspective. It used to cost me $600/hour to shoot from a chopper. Now you young dudes have the affordable tools anytime you want. Fantastic,
As beautiful as always, thank you. That greenhouse is almost a cathedral.
It is
Your cinematography never fails to blow my mind.
The cinematography and beauty of the landscape at the beginning of the video makes me cry.
Love and blessings to you
❤
Looking forward to another year or two of construction of your zen life in the mountains Martijn. Because of the short growing season there a grow light in the green house will really accelerate the growth and production. Keep up the great work with the videos! they are part of my Sunday routine.
What a beautiful greenhouse. Thankyou for sharing
We love all of your video’s but when you get on your bike a special magic happens. Almost as special as when family comes to visit. We fell for you with your bike packing videos and have been hooked ever since! Thanks for sharing!!
I love your new coffee spot by the greenhouse.
I have seen skylights mounted diagonally in many restorations, most of the time for a "modern look." In this case, it would be a great choice as it would enhance the aesthetics and totally suit the structure.
Yeh you wouldn't need bespoke diamond skylights right? Just square units mounted in a diamond configuration.

Martjin you deserve an award for videography! Took my breath at the 2:37 time line! Don't get me wrong there have been many many OH WOWs escaping my mouth with each and every one of your scenic videos, but this one today was EPIC!
When people question why you chose to live where you do In the cold dark depths of winter, tell them "watch vlog #124"
Seriously, it's so worth it. Thank you so much for sharing.
Cheers from the sunny, warm Yukon🍁
ps: I hope White Hen shows them whose boss if they mess with her.
Rain is such a lovely sound, only surpassed by thunder. Love the mountains M….
The trip you made with your friend: Nature pure... bellissimo... so beautiful.... like in a dream!
Peace, what beautiful view. I love it. Thank you so much for sharing your precious time with us. God bless you 🙏
I loved the beginning of this video! I am a mountain biker and I enjoyed watching your ride.
I ruptured my distal tendon about six weeks ago. I'm on the mend now and making great strides towards a total recovery! I started watching your channel around the time of my injury. I discovered your channel while watching Kirsten Dirksen and then started on episode one. I'm almost caught up now! There are few other channels that come close to this one. I love what you are doing and support you mission. I would like to stop by and do some serious manual labor and then enjoy a beer with you! Cheers.
Congratulations Martijn, everything I wish to say has been well said in the comments all of which I agree. Keep up your inspiring work and I hope you get some kind of film making awards because you deserve it and you are one of a kind, the kind who inspires.
Could I suggest something? A second hand cast iron spiral stair between the bedroom and bathroom? So happy watching your progress in these beautiful videos, thank you for all that you do, I look forward to Sunday relaxing in the place we know so well.
Bonjour Martijn Ça fait plaisir de te voir prendre le temps de vivre et de ne créer que de belles choses avec autant de pudeurs et de respect pour la nature à chacune de tes vidéos un moment, hors du commun.🫶🙏🏻
In watching your videos, I feel like I'm in a Tolkien novel waiting for a Hobbit to appear. Then expecting the Mountain King just to stroll out of the mist. You take me to a place of beauty and awe with a Zen like peace. Hearing the cow bells in the distance, birdsong, even the buzz of an occasional fly. I can smell the earthiness in my mind and feel God's gentle breeze brush my skin. Thank you. I adore your aesthetic and style.
My ancestors are from this region, I connect more with your videos.
God blesses.
I am also very excited with the second cabin project. Thanks for those amazing views. God bless.
Martijn, you did an amazing job with your first cabin, I know the second one is going to be as beautiful. The difference is that, you don have to live in a tent now. You have made a beautiful place to live. We watched you work so hard on the first one, dragging rock and dirt out, leveling the floor and so on. Yes, i can't hardly wait to see you start working on the second cabin. And of course, the view of the mountains makes everything come together. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and videos with us.
I'm so excited for you to get your other cabin started. It's going to be fun to watch it come together with your hard work. Have a good week and I will see you next Sunday. The flower boxes and bench add a special little pop.
Martijn taking us on another journey can’t wait you are a legend thanks for the opportunity to join your journey
Dont wait for the permit, you can start with foundation and other things. As long as you dont build walls your safe to work.
I had to chuckle when I saw you sitting outside the greenhouse eating and enjoying your view. Reminder of the days when the tent was there. It is a breathtaking view. Love the bench. Excited about the new plans for the cabin and the workshop. Lastly---the walk with your friend. What a gorgeous area. That waterfall took my breath away---great filming, as always. Thanks for taking me along on your journey.
I have watched Martin from the start. I'm a 80 old lady from Louisiana and also painter as well love every minute 😊
