The 2025 Polestar 4 Is A The Polar Opposite From The Polestar 3... Is That Good Or Bad?

- The Polestar 4 is the Swedish/Chinese brand's newest SUV and it was designed from the ground up to be a coupe, be different, and be, well, polarizing. It's sleek, wicked fast, but doesn't really drive like the 2 or 3, not to mention the old 1. That's because this is the first Polestar to not be based on a Volvo platform and there are pros and cons involved.

I own a C8 Corvette convertible. Visibly rearward is crap. I rely 100% on the rear view camera when the top is up. No issues at all. It eventually becomes second nature and you'll be surprised by how much better it is when you get used to it.
Thumbs up for calling out the blended braking difference between this and tesler.
Agreed, lack of blended brakes is my biggest gripe with most EVs driving experience. The blended braking in my Volvo PHEV is fantastic.
Glad you mentioned that the lack of frunk space is due to the heat pump setup. i honestly couldn't figure why only the mach E have a great frunk and it's never mentioned on other channels(so far) , only that it's small compared to Tesla, although the model 3 has a smaller frunk now and now I know why
Average new vehicle transaction price in the US is $49000, no one points a gun at those close-minded people forcing them to buy this car. As a consumer, I am just happy there are more competitions in our market. Also as someone who travels to inner cities occasionally, I almost want to call the window-less rear hatch a security feature.
it's looks astonishingly
. . . astonishingly what? Astonishingly what!? Speak to me baltazar!
the polestar 4 is truly the ev of all time
I really like the color on that polestar.
The gold color really works well on the 4 imo, although they dont really have any other real "color" options available ya know? No red or blue, just black, white and like 2 forms of silver/grey...
@@animeman2 you can always order it in black and foil it in any color
Top Gear was saying that this is platform is related to the Lotus EV.
Top gear is wrong as usual. It’s the same Plato form as a zeeker
The SEA platforms (Polestar/Volvo/Zeeker/Ji Yue/Geely/Smart) are related to the EPA/SEA-P platform used in the Lotus Eletre and Emeya, but it's a very, very distant relation. It seems to only be some portion of the crash structure, unknown suspension design bits, and some software that is similar, but nothing is directly shared.
@@AAutoBuyersGuideThe Lotus Emeya still looks like the Polestar 4. Lotus is trying to be the premium Geely brand, with Polestar playing second fiddle. Having said that, I think Lotus will fail because it doesn't offer that much more than Polestar, but at a way higher price, and it totally goes against the brand's legacy and reputation, which is the polar opposite of large heavy EVs. From that perspective, the Polestar version will be the winner imho.
@@AAutoBuyersGuidethanks for the explanation!!
Very happy to see it in a color other than white.
Polestar looks really cool. Spain though!! Beautiful💎
I have a P2 and I can't remember when I looked over my shoulder while reversing. I'm all in on the camera and no rear window.
The lack of rear parking sensors is a big problem, the camera as proven on other tests can miss poles or ground blocks when passing camera angle , again with no audio notification as well when reversing, polestar need to change this asap
Great job as always Alex! The lack of standard, powered sunroof shades in these new P* and Volvo models is very weird (what about kids in the rear seats?). I also don't understand why they didn't carve out more headroom from the headliner for the rear passengers in the reclined position.
Overall, I think this is very impressive and attractive car. I much prefer the interior of this one over the P* 3 - far more cohesive and inviting.
Any news on built-in NACS port integration for NA? What about bidirectional charging for home backup?
Great car. Polestar is really good at design, especially the interial, it is clean but doesn't looks cheap, looks high end. Some people is judge its price. Polestar is a luxury brand l, it is more like BMW M series or Mercedes AMG, so the car can not be a cheap one. Think about it, even a top trim Kia will cost more than $70,000, why polestar can't have a higher price. Of you thinj it is expensive, you may not be their target customer. I think we should buy the car with in our budget. There is no car has high end design and materials with cheap price.
keen on getting this. Still debating whether to go for a long range model s or the polestar 4….
Another great review. Yhsnk you! Wish you had a chance to drive single motor like other journalists. So, everyone is comparing to Porsche, Audi etc. This screams VW ID7. The ID7 has been postponed in states and Audi is probably closer but how come no one ln Europe is comparing? Also no any mention of cameras not operable yet and lane cantering. BTW mistake in lane assist graphic appearing twice. The SM seems interesting and like to know what you get from $7k difference between single motor and dual. Seems you ge5 pilot pack + additional extras with dual motor. How about US availability.. still on track for '24? Cheers
If you could get this bad boy without a glass roof, it would immediately be in my top three EVs to seriously consider.
First sight thought is Urus😂😂
Electric Avenue! Great song. ⚡️ 🎤
Nice job Alex & I'm interest on buy this EV car.
I really like this form factor.
In San Francisco, having no hatch glass will be a welcome feature. What would be even better? No side windows. Keep your belongings safe!
I really like the looks-
I’m puzzled they didn’t called a new segment the coupe cross over
4 door vehicles aren't coupes
@@jamespaul2587 Maybe a coupeover then.
@@jamespaul2587 it is called a coupe SUV
@thomaswestin9987 yes, but that term makes no sense as it's neither a coupe nor SUV. The term is just for marketing purposes.
@@jamespaul2587 maybe but what would you call a coupe with space like a SUV then?
I had this car on my short list until I saw the vent controls. You'd think it'd be price that's the deal breaker, and that's definitely not great either. But combine that with digital controls and the rear window situation and I'm out. I've tried digital vents in 2 other vehicles and it's maddening based on the frequency with which I and the drivers in our house change vent positions. Such a dumb change with no actual customer benefit.
Was this a review of the recent press model or is it from a while ago? The other reviewers said they got one that was so so and was early pre production and then got to drive the recent press model and it was night and day difference. Would like to know which was being reviewed here. Thanks Alex!
I'm not sure which other reviewers you are speaking of so I'm not sure I can comment on which models vs which models.
@@AAutoBuyersGuide I think it was Top Gear
@@AAutoBuyersGuidethe British press has - Top Gear , Piston Heads. They explain there was significant calibration issues and polestar sent cars to UK after Spain. However given the press launch was 3 weeks did they manage to sort it out?
Most of what we noticed were software issues, but also the UK program wasn't using the same cars we were. They had RWD models in addition to the dual motor models which were not ready for us when we drove them.
Call me old fashioned but I want a rear window and the option to use a regular mirror over a camera mirror. I haven’t liked the camera mirrors that I’ve tried, but maybe I’d get used to it. But maybe I’d continue to find in annoying. It’s an expensive gamble.
I like that gold color
What is the BMW i4x? This is the second time I've heard it mentioned, but a google search comes up with nothing. Is this coming with the neue klasse models or is it something different?
That's what we assume might come eventually from BMW. It doesn't exist as far as we know.
The IX4 Crossover is planned for 2027 debut according to BMW.
There you go! We guessed correctly!
as a gen 4 Mazda3 hatchback driver, i have gotten very accustom to having little of no rear view thru my cars xtra large c pillars and tiny rear glass...
i'm primed and ready for polestar 4 challenge. can't wait to see these in person.
The amber turn indicators are large enough to pass US regulations AND other Polestars have amber so hopefully this one keeps them too. If so, I will move up my list of a possible new vehicle.
They aren't quite big enough actually. FMVSS says they need to be 50 sqcm and these measured out to be about half of that. We are waiting on a comment from Polestar, but we should know more soon. It's possible they are seeking a waiver.
Save the Ambers!
wait one to two years after it depreciates by nearly 50% or more.
Driving through Spain looks lovely.
Planning to order one of these later this year. Beautiful car. Interested to see the minor differences between the cars coming from the SK factory vs. the China factory.
Polestar will go down like fisker, if they don't get better dealer support and drop prices,
This looks like one car from the lynk&co lineup in China...
Id take same car with zero to 60 in 5.3 seconda for 10k less. These car manufacturers are cluess as to whats going on in the US economy. Rhese wont sell and will be heavily discounted as a result.
So is this tariffed? hope not.
It is, but Polestar are manufacturing the Polestar 3 in the US which they export to Europe and other markets, when producing and exporting in the US they can off-set some of the tariffs they will incur from importing vehicles, that way they hope to minimize the effect of the tariffs. However, they are currently working on producing the Polestar 4 in South Korea instead of China for the US market, that way they avoid the tariffs entirely. That factory goes live next year. But in the meantime they will be using the US production of the P3 to offset the cost of the tariffs from imported Polestar 2:s and 4:s from China.
It is. The base MSRP was raised by $10,000 as a result of the tariff. Hopefully that comes down when production moves to South Korea.
PS3 production in the USA won't offset the tariffs because PS3s built here are not being exported to China, at least not for now. There was some talk about doing that but it seems that Polestar will instead just move production for the 4 to South Korea which will escape the tariffs. We could not get Polestar to comment on this, but it is still possible that they could export some to China to offset and refund the existing tariffs paid on Polestar 2, but how much business sense this will make is unclear at the moment.
@@AAutoBuyersGuide ArsTechnica published that PS4 would get a price increase due to tariffs, but that Polestar would honor the original pre-tariff price for those that preordered/reserved a vehicle.
ArsTechnica is incorrect. I called our contacts at Polestar today and they said their reporting was incorrect that there is no price increase for pre-orders or new orders. Ars has or will be publishing a clarification as I understand it.
Okay I know driving without a rear window is do-able but... I don't trust people lol
Or cameras.
this is a tall ass car ... like that toyota crown 😂
This is on my vision board ❤. Really beautiful car and spacious interior. Not so sure about it being stiffly sprung. We need more smooth, soft riding EVs. It fits the character of the drive trains better in my opinion.
an interesting marketing move by Polestar. sell more sedans by calling them... SUVs? lol
It’s that no one wants to call anything a hatchback these days. You’ll see that with other recent models from other manufacturers.
SUVs allow a higher MSRP to claim the tax credit
it is spacious on the inside like a SUV
Won't this get hit with the 100% import tariff?
Yep, which is why they will be moving production to Korea in just a few months...

It looks nice, but I'd be concerned with reliability if I had it for a week-long rental.
ps4 > macan on price and size alone. you get more for less.
Don’t make excuses for bad packaging, the Model 3 for example is lower, has a smaller hood and a heat pump, and still has a bigger frunk!
Everyone except Tesla, Lucid and Rivian seems to struggle to get good frunk space in passanger cars 🤷
Actually the hood is lower and shorter in the 4. We measured vs Travis' Model 3
@@AAutoBuyersGuide Oh ok surprising, thanks for the correction, Is that the height in the front or the middle?
Still confused generally on legacy front ends, like BMW i5 for example, huge hood and just a big covered cavity, especially on the rear wheel drive model.
Height at the start of the hood is notably lower (after the bumper) and the hoos was about 4 inches or so shorter in terms of length. i5 is just packaged to be a compromise between ICE/EV so they stuff things like chargers, etc under the hood and that's what eats most of the space. Volvo and Polestar also tend to favor shallower frunks due to concerns about crumple zone performance which is similar to Mercedes' take.
@@AAutoBuyersGuide that’s interesting because Teslas have good crumple zone performances, not including the Cybertruck
@garrettw99 We don't actually know how they compare. Standardized tests are not done with anything in the cargo area and NHTSA, IIHS, and other NCAP groups around the world have yet to test performance with deformable vs non deformable objects in the front. It's logical to see that a frunk with a gym bag will deform differently than a frunk with a metal suitcase, vs home construction supplies, etc. This is a point that Mercedes made not long ago and I kind of dismissed the thought initially.... Until I was at Home Depot loading concrete pier blocks into the frunk of the Lightning we owned and I thought "hmm, maybe they have a point"?
That Gold Color is outright ugly!. The side profile is exciting though. Seems country road in Spain is pretty terrible.
If I had $80k to spend on an EV I'm buying the Porsche Macan EV or Audi Q6 E-tron over this where I can get seat massaging and rear wheel steering.
$80k isn’t enough to get you massage seats and rear axle steer in either of those cars
@@PsychicOracle I just went on porsche's website and configured a base Macan EV and added massaging seats and rear wheel steering then it popped up with four cars in stock that match my build near me and the price was $80,450. So yes you can!
@@pnketiabut a base macan does not come with this level of power. Not a proper comparison

Yeah, ...but who's the blonde in the mirror??
I LOVED the Polestar 2 I drove recently, but I have misgivings about Polestar leaving the Volvo family and going directly under Geely because the Android Automotive interface will no doubt be sending your information to China.
Oh no... Give it to Google, Marc, And Tim instead.... JFC .. gimme a break already with this bull. What are they gonna do that isn't already being done? Such craziness is a disease.
No rear window no opening sunroof and the price are deal breakers 86,000 for this model I guess it will be the nail in the coffin for Polestar too bad they make very handsome cars.
Ah the rear window complaints sounds like when people complained about the lack of a floppy drive on the original iMac around 1998…
They tried calling the Polestar 2 an SUV and nobody agreed. They're trying the same with this and no one is going to agree.
Nobody at Polestar has ever called the 2 an SUV to my knowledge, at least not in the USA. I'm surprised they didn't actually since it has similar clearance to an XC40.
@@AAutoBuyersGuideAgree, P2 is not called a SUV in Sweden either. Also, if you sit inside the the P3 and P4 I think it is as big as a SUV in terms of space and legroom
Does Alex’s previous manservant still work on this channel? Does it do the camera work and no longer on screen work?
I'm not sure what to even make of this question?
Okay okay let’s not objectify Brian (you can see him on KBB’s 2025 R1T R1S refresh)

Polestar needs to do better. Spanish junkets for journalists/reviewer/influencers/RUclipsrs is not a sustainable practice nor are junkets free of biasing reviewers. I know you do your best to stay objective, Alex. Just send some of those early cars to North America and other markets and then pass them to their non-existent dealerships.
I wouldn't describe the average launch like this as a junket. Rolls and some luxury companies do influencer type things that are like that, but spending 50 hours in Spain to drive 2 cars and eat buffet lunches/dinners between filming 12 hours a day isn't my definition of "fun". I would have much preferred to have the program closer to home, but the decision was for all world market journalists to drive the 3/4 and Spain is centrally located between the Asian markets and the Americas. International trips make me cranky and lose sleep.
looks like a GV60 right out the gate
Just what the world needs, another sub 4 second zero to sixty EV that costs over $56K for the base model - NOT! 🤑

Polestar is almost bankrupt. I think info like this needs to mentioned along with any information about whether a car is a lemon or not. Everything is unicorns and honey in a new car review, but what about after you drive the junk out out of the dealership?
They recieved 1 billion USD investments recently, have three cars with great reviews now, seven new markets coming up. Also one of the biggest car company in the world as main stakeholder.
Jumping around alot. Looks uncomfortable
Not bad looking. Too bad it’s an EV. I’ll stick with my 455HP, 523 lb ft S60 Recharge, lifetime (17,000 miles) mpg 103, charging costs~$35/mo. (My last ICE, 29.7 mpg.) I went 54 miles yesterday at 40 to 50 mph, rolling terrain, on the battery, which was not exhausted.
According to the comment section polestar is of to a bad start, and I couldn’t agree more, they look terrible and cost a shit Tonne

Some stupid things manufacturers do in name of design or polarization is disgusting.! Like cybertruck might have good ideas but all together ugly, this thing looks good till you see no rear glass like seeing a sexy female from behind and turn around to see Mrs doubtfire! This had so much potential. Cybertruck would have been good with a family front but more like rivian
Polestar seems to have little to do with Volvo. It just seems to me to be a Chinese designed and made auto?
I'd rather have the most American car made than the most Chinese car ever bought up from Sweden.
For me and my S60 the Ridgeville SC assembly and minimal 25% Chinese parts makes up for the larger Chinese connection.
Polestar is ”a publicly traded corporation on the Stockholm exchange headquartered in Sweden. Geely owns around 40% of Polestar directly, Volvo still owns about 40% and Geely owns over 75% of Volvo, so ultimately around 71% of Polestar is owned by Geely.” (AAutoBuyersGuide)
60k and made in China no thank you!
I'll take it over "made in USA" 🤣🤣🤣
Why not? Quality build assured. The best Teslas are built in Shanghai. No surprise why Biden imposed 100% tariff protection even before they are for sale there.
Both Polstar 3 and 4 are both Chinese cars, so they’re the same to me.
They're not Chinese. Polestar is a Swedish brand with a Chinese parent company. But the teams of people that designed and engineered this car are European based in Sweden. And the 3 and 4 are very different cars, one very much based on a Volvo and the other strongly based on a Zeeker.
