@@stevelane6919 you must still be young. You will learn one day that there is no value to material things. I would give anything to see my wife just one more time, anything. I would trade all on my tomorrows for one more day with her. All the money in the world is useless to me.
I read somewhere that they wanted to make a prequel about Maude before she met Harold. Thankfully the project was abandoned. Who needs to know more about her. I like that there are blank spaces in her story and we can fill them in,especially those hinted at by the numbered tattoo on her forearm. She obviously saw the worst of humanity but didn't allow it to taint the rest of her life, choosing life over death. Ruth Gordon deserved an Oscar for her performance, but being in a film so weird and morbid that it was never even considered. I will never tire of watching Harold and Maude. Let's see someone try to remake this. Impossible.
I love a man 34 years older than me. We have two children and will soon be welcoming our third. I understand this movie so deeply it hurts, because I know in my heart I will have to be strong when my other half leaves this world. May we meet again in another life as we have in so many. Love you today and always my dear! You taught me the meaning of life and still are, just as Maude taught Harold.
I agree fully! Bud Cort was the perfect angry/scared "little man" in this movie. The song, and sometimes the footage, helped me through the death of my own son in 2009. I can't tell you how many times I died by proxy while watching this film... Work. Of. Art.
My condolences. I recently lost my son and I'd told him to rent this movie not long before, bcuz I wanted him to understand that there's more to life than doing what everyone else does. I hoped he'd be inspired by the freedom of spirit that Maudes' charachter so perfectly championed . a very special film to me and will remain to be .
I'm so sorry you lost your son! Losing a child is every parent's worse nightmare. God bless his beautiful soul. May he rest in peace. May perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of the faithful departed through the Mercy of God rest in peace, Amen. God bless and give you comfort and solace if they can be found in such circumstances.
A perfect ending if there is a such thing! The hearse is driven off the cliff, a fade up, he's playing the banjo, then dancing in the distance, symbolizing all his dark obsession is left behind AND what Maude shared with him on life, live on through him. SIMPLY FANTASTIC!
None of us "is" Harold or Maude. . . .. just saying. (I understand, I'm going to be seen as the grammar police . . .sigh .. .it matters. . . ."None" has no real way of being plural . .. . does "None"? :)
God bless his soul. May he rest in peace. May perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of the faithful departed through the Mercy of God rest in peace, Amen. Sending lots of hugs and love your way!
The great thing about this movie is that this amazing soundtrack is just as much as a leading character as the main leads of this film. The fact is, I've never watched a film that if you took out the soundtrack, the entire movie falls down. This is that kind of movie, it just doesn't work without the soundtrack.
When I saw this as a kid (19-20) I was convinced that Harold did die at the end, and the depiction of him playing banjo on the bluff was his soul’s release. Now at 56, I’m watching and I’m pretty sure if Ashby had intended that, he’d have had him in different wardrobe or something to indicate it. He’s wearing the same outfit he had in the hospital and driving out there. I was convinced otherwise for 30 some years, now I’m convinced that he was letting go of Maude (and that whole morbid chapter of his young life) and that meant ditching the Jag/Hearse and embracing the banjo!
Look closely at Ruth’s face in the first shot… she has the widest, warmest smile at first thinking of her goal… but watch how it fades as she speaks. She recognizes halfway through her line that Harold isn’t on the same page as her. That what she’s saying is going to devastate him, and the smile shrinks to a smirk. Not a cruel smirk, mind you. More of a “what else am I gonna do” kind of smirk. Excellent, subtle acting from one of the all time greats.
I just searched for this because I wanted to share it. Harold and Maude is my favorite movie by a thousand miles. I've heard adjectives for it like "sick" and "morbid." Mine are "beautiful" and "life affirming." I was 10 or so when we watched it as a family, and it is imprinted...
Sucks, have always loved it, now having to face my own mortality... No great sound track for it. Please embrace your inner child while you can...like Maude said, go out and love some more
Chris Morrison I'm sorry. I lost all my elders but my mom is who I miss the most. She's the one who turned me on to this movie. She played guitar, drums, artist, surviver of so much. Been over 10 years. She's probably jamming with Bob Marley

The forearm number tattoo is the single most important shot in the movie. I often wonder how many people watching on small screens never saw it…

Lyrics
Trouble!
Oh trouble set me free
I have seen your face
And it’s too much, too much for me
Trouble!
Oh trouble can’t you see
You’re eating my heart away
And there’s nothing much left of me
I’ve drunk your wine
You have made your world mine
So won’t you be fair
So won’t you be fair?
I don’t want no more of you
So won’t you be kind to me
Just let me go where
I’ll have to go there
Trouble!
Oh trouble move away
I have seen your face
And it’s too much for me today
Trouble!
Oh trouble can’t you see
You have made me a wreck
Now won’t you leave me in my misery?
I’ve seen your eyes
And I can see death’s disguise
Hangin’ on me
Hangin’ on me
I’m beat, I’m torn
Shattered and tossed, I’m worn
Too shocking to see
Too shocking to see
Trouble!
Oh trouble move from me
I have paid my debt
Now won’t you leave me in my misery?
Trouble!
Oh trouble please be kind
I don’t want no fight
And I haven’t got a lot of time
