What amazes me is that the first part of the song sounds a lot like thrash metal from the 80s (Metallica, Anthrax, etc). No other metal band in the 70s sounded quite like this. They were truly ahead of their times!
This song emphasizes how talented each member is. Bill is tearin it up on the drums, Geezer cuttin loose on the bass, Ozzy belting out those lyrics, and Tony shredding those cords.
The band "Impellitteri" featuring Guitar God Chris Impellitteri does the absolute best version of this. They play it so damn well it makes this version sound unfinished, incomplete. Look it up here on youtube they did a video for it. Even the most diehard Sabbath fans will like it.

Come on Brad buddy, Im a 56 yr old metalhead with arthritis and can still headbang....YOU CAN DO IT LOL Thank you for hitting this one. This has my favorite ending to a Sabbath song ever. I honestly didn't think Iommi had it in him to play like this and was genuinely shocked and so pleased when I first heard it. Can we talk about Ozzy's vocals and Bill Wards drumming in this? STELLAR to say the least. I'm hoping you'll one day get to "Thrill Of It All" ruclips.net/video/rZqe3VqUqtk/видео.html It's one of my favorites of theirs. Peace
The Nod is more chill, and still scratches that itch. And my pick for a Sabbath song they haven't done yet is Warning from the first album. The guitar solo is epic.
This song plows through anything in it's path. When the end of the song approaches it punches a hole though that and invites us to follow. What we find is beautiful.
"It's just like a wavelength, and once you get on that wavelength you get the music." YES! You get it! Black Sabbath, specifically the first five albums, worked on a wavelength, a frequency and as long as you get that you get their music. It ain't just about heavy riffs and dark Imagery.
the music, and even the band itself... in fact, all of the founding members are still alive; a rare occurrence for rock stars. Although Ronnie James Dio is no longer with us, he was not a founding member. Fun fact: of the founding members, "Geezer" Butler is actually the youngest. In Cockney slang, "geezer" is kind of like "dude" in the USA; it doesn't have the connotation of someone who is old.
While time continues to pass, I've realized that I'm anchored to a specific point in it and while the passing of time blows me forward like the wind on a sail, I'll always be here, in these moments which define my time on earth.
I know good buddy it's crazy... I understand that the year I was born doesn't matter, but born this year 1973 album an now turning 50 when after watching Rock n roll crash in 1995 we will never come across anything like this ever... Ozzy scared the shit out of me as a kid in 1979- 83... Then you become of age of reason...
I bought this album when it came out in 1975 and it was way before there was any headbanging or even the concept of "metal". Just pure, raw and hard rock. Almost hippie-like if you ask me. I was sold from the first note of this epic album. Thanks for bringing it up! 💝
Lex cracks me up! And just by looking at these recent videos, you can't tell she is almost gonna have a baby! She looks great. Also, Brad is really coming around to listening to the music as opposed to just the lyrics.
Finally, my favorite Sabbath song. The first time you hear it comes as a complete surprise because you absolutely don't anticipate the 180 turn the song takes. That jam is just sooo good, i wish it was longing for several minutes more.
Brad, yes the wavelength thing is true for all music. I used to hate hate Fiona Apple's music. Then I saw a live version she did of "After You've Gone" on youtube and it just clicked and I got it. Went back and listened to her other stuff and it sounded so different after I understood what she was doing.
That complete change at about 5:10 is just astonishing, further illustrates the utter brilliance and vurtiosoity of this legendary band. The last part, the music wouldn't be out of place on a Cafe del Mar compilation. Just incredible.
From The " Paranoid" album, Master of reality, Vol. 4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, I've never seen again 4 albums that were as incredible that each one raised the bar each time. Between '70-"74 they were the leaders of the movement that would be known as " Metal ". ♥️🇬🇧
I'm so glad you mentioned that it reminded you of symphonic music! I have long seen a connection between much of Black Sabbath and classical in that there are different movements in their songs.

This one really got to you Brad ..... Your best reaction yet !! Talk about being on a wavelength ..... your words were poetic. Thanx for the pick-me-up. SOTU is considered one of the songs that predated THRASH. And yet gorgeous in complexity.
Yea!!! You guys did it!!!! Sabbath never dissapoints. See Ozzy can sing his ass off. The beginnings of thrash metal. Lyrics are all Geezer on this one. Sabbath can go from braking your neck to making you boogie. They will never get the respect they deserve.
Brad--i'm feeling your philosophy here! Each part of the Universe contains the whole and the divine...the beaty pours thru everything if you look at any specific thing deep enough or at least from the correct angle.
Another example of their utter brilliance, you just can't go wrong with anything off their first 6 albums. Sabbath rules back in the day, in the present and as far into the future as humans love great music. Also on that album try Hole In the Sky, another banger from the best. All hail the kings of heavy music! Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶
When you put this song on one of your playlists, as you must, always include the song before it: Don't Start Too Late. It's very short, and kind of a great contrast/intro to this song. A very Sabbath bunch of mood changes. After you've reacted to all the songs from Sabotage (except Insane), you'll have to go back and listen to it all, it's one of their greatest. Ozzy's voice is so strong on this album, and it's full of great songs and riffs, and killer Bill Ward playing.

BRAD, feeling the Sabbath - loving it ! Take the head-banging slow, you are not a teenager anymore...lol Love Lex the Sabbath fan. When the transition hit, Lex became a metal hippie !
This is probably one of my favorite songs but theres a 50 second song called “Don’t Start too late” that builds this song up even better imo. This whole album though gives me energy
Great reaction especially LEX. Tony Iommi is referred to as the riff Master and this is one of his best. Sabbath almost always changed feeling and tempo several times in each song. All hard rock and heavy metal comes from the DNA of Black Sabbath. There are no bad songs so keep reacting!🤘

The greatest metal song ever written. I’m so jealous that you get to hear it for the first time. Absolutely brilliant album.
Yes!!!!!!
Agreed, I remember Tony Iommi saying Sabbath Bloody Sabbath was the pinnacle. A great album for sure but I think it could just as easily be Sabotage.

In my opinion this is one of the greatest ”metal” tracks of all time.
Undoubtably. A masterpiece in every sense of the word.
The Grandfathers of metal, Black Sabbath, with another banger of a song.
