This was perfectly demonstrated and explained. As a female teaching her daughters basic maintenance on a vehicle, you gave valuable detail tips. You’re a great instructor- THANK YOU!
Thanks for a 'how to' that wasn't a music video or filmed in potato-vision. Quick, direct, to the point & above all: helpful! Thanks! Nitrile gloves are great for keeping the oil off your hands. (The Harbor of Freights has them ultra cheap.)
Thank you sooo much! It’s crazy you should say that. Every video I watch is always music blaring, dog barking, baby crying, potato camera. I’m glad you appreciated the clear message.
Hey man thanks for putting this video out there! New car owner with a Ford 04 here and had no idea where to start, so I came to RUclips and happened across your content. Thanks!
After I (finally) got the filter off that the last mechanic put on, I used a Motorcraft filter for which I had already bought the specific cap wrench (and 5 spare filters!) You get at it from underneath using a socket wrench + extension handle. MUCH easier than the ring-thingy 🙂👍
You forgot to put some oil on the filter gasket. It's VERY important to do that so you get a good seal between the filter and the block. Also, instead of fiddling to get a filter wrench in that small space, use a bottom adapter and use a 3/8" drive extension to loosen it. Works great and speeds up the filter removal.
I have a 2010 and the first time I changed the oil myself, I immediately went and got one of those "bottom adapter" filter wrenches aka "Cap Type" that fits on the bottom of the filter. That and an extension like you said, made the filter process waaaaay easier/faster. Highly recommended. And yes I do the oil around the filter gasket too. I just dip my finger in oil and run it around the gasket couple tree time
Good vid, the only thing I'd add is to wear disposable gloves. Harbor Freight sells them super cheap. Easier personal cleanup, not to mention used motor oil is a carcinogen. Occasional exposure isn't an issue, but if your do it a lot....wear gloves.
@@iamdjnam Yeah. The filter was a frustrating test of mental health and will power not to swear too loudly so's to disturb the neighbors or any clergymen who might pass by. Thought I was gonna go blind, have a carpel tunnel event and throw up at the same time under there till it finally came off. Then I dropped the oil cap down into the engine compartment. Made a mess of the garage floor but done, finally.
Great..I watch all your videos no matter how simple they are.. 3 things I learned , 1 do the oil change in the AM, if you don't filled the filter with oil it takes longer for the pump to pump oil&:3 I'll put my rubber hammer to my hood to hold it, tired of changing hood shocks.
I still hate all models of ford expeditions, ford exploders, f-150 through f-350s. Doesnt mean i will not keep the the vehicles maintained but all i can say is ford and their "friendly" way of replacing lets say fuel filters and other things including the spark plugs are more complicated than they should be in comparison to other gm vehicles. Its more frustrating than my chevy and evo. I just got an 05 ford exploder and spent 3 months deep cleaning it from top to bottom removing every bit of the interior. The exterior i got new plugs and cables and all filters and new wheel hub bearings. Gotta tell ya flippin ridiculous lol. Anyway the fuel filter and the oil change is the last thing the car needs before its up and running. Your video was very good, descriptive and on point thanks for the upload xD.
Couple comments..... First a new drain plug is about 3 bux from a Ford dealership.they don't sell the rubber o-ring seperately. Get a new drain plug and only tighten it up to torque spec. Fastest way to get a slight oil drip is overtighten the drain plug. (it chews up the rubber o-ring.) Second, I didn't see it it your vid but take your finger dip it in some oil and just lightly slide your finger around the new filter gasket. And lastly the Oil filter is a lot easier to get at if you pull the back (rear) 3 push pins out of the inner mud flap and bend it back..you'll be looking right at the oil filter. The push pins can be removed and replace a hundred times if you are careful.Jack it up and take the wheel off...easy peasy.
Tedmc1 Thanks for commenting. I own 7 explorers and do enough oil changes to know my way around. I go from underneath the vehicle because my arms are small so I can reach it no problem. If I was some slob that couldn’t slide under the vehicle that’s a different story. I did put oil on the gasket, and on certain explorers the oil drain plug gasket is replaceable. My whole thought is why take the tire off if I don’t have to??
You forgot to edit out your license plate at the end 😂 I only noticed cause I'm in NJ too so that plate always catches my attention in random internet vids
you should use full synthetic in that engine due to the weak chain guides and change it out every 3 to 500o miles. A better choice is Amsoil. Supertech has great full synthetic oil.
I can’t give you an answer because so many variables are different. Depends on what chain is making the noise, mileage, how hard it is driven, etc. Keep driving it until one day it’s so loud that you have to shut it off. You’ll know when that day comes....
Who TF said that??! What's 5 litres of oil cost? What's a filter cost? (You can order Motorcraft filters through RockAuto and they'll cost you sod-all.)
@@iamdjnam bet! Thank you! I did filled it up too, also what do you use to film your videos? I just did the oil change on Dora ( my ford explorer) and i tried to film for my instagram and i was struggling 🤣🤣

Totally understand. For what a mechanic charges (I assume around $30) it’s totally worth it to let them do it. Afterwards you need to go through the hassle of recycling the oil and cleaning everything up.

Been changing oil in my 03 Explorer for 20 Yrs. Always looking at videos to learn something new. This is one of the best out there. Thanks

Best oil change on a Explorer. Thank you bro 💯

Oh man that WAS simple looking! I'm going to start doing my own oil. Thanks for the video
How’s it been?
@TFG Dia3lo Good. That said I traded the old fella in for a newer car. This video was a big help along the way so thank you
Great video. Quick, Fast, simple and very well explained! Thanks!

Looks pretty simple. Thanks a lot. I'm gonna start changing the oil myself.
How’d it go?
Wow my brother this tutorial was perfection. Subscribed immediately! Thank you man about to check out your other vids
Much appreciated!!

Using the flood clear mode when first starting it up after the oil change eliminates the need to pre-fill the filter.
Yeah I do that when I put a new motor in but also helps during oil changes too
Yep, what I do.
Also, if you do your change an hour or 2 after running, the engine will still have a protective oil coating.
Thanks soo much😍

Thank bro I just got one question I need to change my oil too but I have the v8 engine , you think I would need more oil or 1 is just good ?
My 4.6 van takes 7, but my 4.6 mustang took 5. Check the dipstick. Don’t overfill.
Dino Oil? Good for what change interval? , very nice video
4:58 i have same clicking noise while engine running at cold. please tell me is that dead chain or something else?
Yes, that is the notorious cold start rattle due to worn out tensioners and stretched chains.
@@iamdjnam thanks for the answer. And how many miles can i move without critical consequences? Approximately
I can’t give you an answer because so many variables are different. Depends on what chain is making the noise, mileage, how hard it is driven, etc. Keep driving it until one day it’s so loud that you have to shut it off. You’ll know when that day comes....
What kind of oil are you using full synthetic ? Deciding if I should use it or not
Amsoil on the engines I rebuilt. Walmart special conventional on everything else.
your took exactly only 5 Quarts?
Yes
every time I change my oil, I just drain, and put the whole 5 quart bottle in and it's always right on the money on the dipstick.
I need help, the bolt on the oil is too tight, Is en used a wrench, no help, any suggestions?
Tap it with a hammer, the shock will break it loose
Should filter be changed at every oil change? I read that the filter maybe be changed every 3-5 oil changes...is that accurate?
Thanks in advance
They’re like $3. Totally worth it to replace every oil change.

Is it 5 quarts for a 2005 XLT 4.0L Explorer?
Yes
Question❓ so I don't have to lift my car to do oil change on 2003 explorer xlt
Depends on the persons size. Personally weighing in at 119 pounds and skinny as heck, I don’t need to lift the truck.
So do you fill it up all the way or half way before putting it on ?
I fill all my filters to the top to prevent momentary dry start
@@iamdjnam bet! Thank you! I did filled it up too, also what do you use to film your videos? I just did the oil change on Dora ( my ford explorer) and i tried to film for my instagram and i was struggling 🤣🤣
I use a GoPro hero 4 and a GoPro hero 7 black. No case, because the case prevents it from picking up clear audio.
Did you have to jack up the vehicle?
Nope!

I hot a 2002 explorer xlt it sat for 2 years the battery is dead i put a new battery it it and it just clicks when turned over. Any help please
Perhaps the starter needs replacement
Are you SURE the replacement battery is good?
Now I have to look up the quantity of oil and the number on the filter.
That's all I needed to know.
No thanks.
5 quarts and FL820S. No need to be a dick.
You don’t need to prefill the filter unless it’s a turbo vehicle
That’s highly debatable.
5w30 Valvoline full Synthetic or Mobil 1, any reference?
All oil is good as long as it’s API rated. Get what’s on sale. Don’t waste your money.
