The “polearm master” feat inevitably comes up whenever people discuss optimized fighter builds. Some DMs will even call it overpowered or broken. Is it? Should you play one? We’re going to dive deep into the concept and provide you with everything you need to know.

Fun fact, the sentinel feat has a passage which says when a creature makes an attack against someone other than you you can make an opportunity attack which means if your riding a mount, and have the mounted combatant feat you can attack anyone trying to attack your mount as a bonus action.
I add a third feat, Great Weapon Master, and use the UA fighting style, tunnel fighter. You now get extra attacks, bonus damage, and don't use your reaction for opportunity attacks. Make it an eldritch knight for added fun.
This sound great! Can you explain a little further plz hahaha.
I sense lots of arrows and spells coming your way with this build, but neat idea! 👍
Huzzah!
Place those feats and classes on a Bugbear character with the long limmed trait and you can add an extra 5 ft to your reach.
You're absolutely right, and it's ridiculous....
Seems broken enough. 😋😂
@@SkullSplitter ONLY on your turn. Which does NOT include Attacks of Opportunity.
Also give that bugbear tunnel fighter, and spider climb
My DM doesn't allow bugbears as they are suposedly only evil aligned and he doesn't allow evil characters at his table - fair...but I want to play one that was "cursed" into being either neutral or good aligned.
I like to multiclass the battle master fighter combo with 5 levels in forge cleric to make the pole arm a +1 magic weapon and additional damage from spirit guardians. If your willing to sacrifice the ability points for one more feat, alert is also nice to throw in and take the blind fighting style. So in that 10ft radius it’s just a kill box.
A difficult terrain kill box.
So, I often use pole arm master not for this cheese strategy, but rather I use pole arm master to as a huge DPS boost both early and late game as it means you can dish out an average of 14 damage at 1st level which is enough to defeat most enemies at that level assuming both attacks hit. Additionally, once you get to 4th level you can pick up the great weapon master feat to deal an average of 34 damage which is still insane for that level. This damage can be boosted even further with class features such as a paladins smite bringing the damage as high as the 50s by 4th level.
Imagine playing a bugbear and getting five extra feet of range. And also a possible extra 2D6
Best build is this: custom lineage (pick whatever race you want, we're doing this for darkvision plus a starting feat). For fighting style go with great weapons fighting. For starting feat go with mounted combatant and swap one of your starting martial weapons (a hand crossbow is worth 75gp, the same as a riding horse) with a riding horse. For your weapon pick a glaive or Halberd (you want something with reach that's classified as a polearm with the heavy weapons property).
Now you have advantage on attacks you make provided your mount is bigger than the target. Next grab Great Weapons Master at 4th level, Polarm Master at 6th and Sentinel at 8th. Fun fact: you can add the GWM +10 damage to the bonus attack you make with the blunt end of the weapon from Polearm master since the attack specifies that it retains the weapon's original property (heavy). Similarly you can stop people from moving whenever they enter your range.
You also can block weapon attacks targeted at allies thanks to your warding maneuver and you can use multiple reactions to use opportunity attacks several times at 17th level when you get vigilant fighter.
Additionally good feats are Heavy armor master, Lucky and Alert. You can however opt for an ASI improvement alternatively. With a riding horse or war horse using dash each turn you'll have 120 feet of movement each turn. Enjoy!
bro made that Lu Bu build in 5e fr
Do you find a 4'5" dwarf barbarian wielding a glaive as interesting?
Important : I don't think You know how AoO works. Point 3. When enemy charges You it doesn't provoke attack of opportunity. So the whole tactic in this movie is wrong.
lol. I don’t think you understand the feat. There is no “charge” and this fear combo specifically does get a AoO in a situation where someone attempts to come through your reach
So I have a Harengon ranger. Harengon get a jump that’s 5x their prof mod and does not provoke opportunity attacks. It’s also affected by jump 3x your jump. Harengon also don’t suffer the 1/2 stand high jump debuff. So you can jump plus their hop with a pike or glaive. With polearm master and sentinel for some insane dps plus depending on how your dm does fall damage you can roll for acrobatics to avoid some damage but 1d6 for every 10 ft falling split 1/2 between you and the foe and they are knocked prone and later with drake warden the dragon can grapple or fly you around
I am trying to make a bugbear cavalier polearm fighter
My personal favorite (will definitely use him as at least one of my main villains when I start DMing)
*EDIT: changed the level order. I did it differently with more paladin first and tried to streamline it for this post, but forgot smite is only available at level 2
Level 7 oath of conquest paladin, level 10 hexblade warlock (eldritch blast with repelling blast) , level 3 echo knight fighter with tunnel fighter with polearm fighter+sentinel+warcaster weilding a glave/halberd
*Level 2 paladin, 3 warlock, 2 fighter, 5 more paladin, 1 fighter, rest warlock*
Or level some warlock before paladin if you wanna get your feats online before your personal effects then finish up warlock at the end
I used winged tiefling, but the species is up for debate (admittedly mostly between tiefling and variant human)
What was your BBEG named?
@@SkullSplitter Putting it short, we basically played an extended curse of Strahd. The final encounter with Strahd was honestly kind of disappointing with how fast we killed him, but it was still fulfilling. Although Castle Ravenloft itself was brutal.
Can also be done w/ a human cleric where by level 5 you'll have polearm, sentinel, and spirit guardians. Keep things at bay and demolish mobs.
dex ranged fighter is superior. better main stat, crossbow expert/ sharpshooter. so basically the same as this, coming online at 4th level. can use it up close and at range. can dump strength and focus on constitution . can't make opportunity attacks though. so finding something to do with your reaction can be difficult. paired with goading attk or menacing attk, can do some control as well. menacing attk is okay i guess, but people just gloss over how sooo many creatures are immune to it. and also granted a hand crossbow only does a d6. but 10+dex+d6 is mighty strong. anndd you can take the archery fighting style, so that sharpshooter doesn't hurt your to hit as much lol
Wouldn't call it "superior", but very potent as well. Melee BM has a much easier time getting advantage on their attacks (basically +5 to hit). Whoever fails that Trip Attack Str save is looking at a world of hurt.
im building up my half orc champion fighter to get pole arm master at 6th level and sentinel at 8th i already took orcish fury at 4th im also gonna take mobile and slasher lols crit fishing with my fishing pole lols i already got a +1 haldberd so im getting the ball rolling lols its in a free marches style setting called The Forged Concordance on roll 20 and discord
What about a VHuman Battlemaster with PAM@1, Sentinel@4 and GWM@6? Does GWM work with the bonus action PAM attack?
From the PHB: "Before you make a melee attack with a heavy weapon that you are proficient with, you can choose to take a -5 penalty to the attack roll. If the attack hits, you add +10 to the attack’s damage." The bonus action attack from PAM is a melee attack so yes, you can use GWM if you want. It's one of the reasons why such a build is so powerful (Paladins love PAM for the same reason because they can Smite with the BA attack as well).
Query how would you fight against someone with the Polearm master and sentinel feats?
Ranged attacks
I think someone mentioned using something like shocking grasp to get rid of reactions teleportation, magic. Lots of options if you're creative. Sending in minions works too
Battlemaster Fighter with the Disarm maneuver (because a polearm fighter without a polearm is called a target). Ranged attacks and spells are always options.
Bugbear race...give yourself an extra 5 ft of reach + 5 polearm. Bugbear Stealth is nice too. Sentinal and polearm master... He's a beast!
Although I’m pretty sure they can’t use an opportunity attack with the bugbear reach
Leonin paladin pole-arm master with sentinel.
I really like that race and I wish I saw more of them in play.
My dm said I can’t have both these feats. I asked if I can be a cavalier. Yes I can 😅
Patrick you’re a legend
Finally someone who claryfied the Spear Situation. So i do can use the Spear and shield with my Sorlock to push people back with my Opportunity eldritch blasts. (warcaster, polearm master)
I made an even more optimized version of this IMO with slightly less passive damage but way more advantage and disadvantage and hijinks and AoO's 😂
Welll what is it???
Wonderful guide
Glad you think so!
I’ve read sentinel only takes effect within 5 ft:
Its any area you threaten, which is indicated by your reach.
@@SkullSplitter this is the third asterisk of the Sentinel feat: “When a creature within 5 feet of you makes an attack against a target other than you (and that target doesn't have this feat), you can use your reaction to make a melee weapon attack against the attacking creature.”
So I guess my question is does the pole arm master feat override this language stating 5ft?
Ahhh, I see. Two points here, you get the opportunity attack for anything you threaten. The reaction portion is five feet. Which, frankly, is kinda a bummer as a bugbear with a polearm gets seriously shafted by the 5ft limitation.
@@SkullSplitter right? Bummer. Maybe my DM will grace me with reach.
I made it 667 likes for you. You're welcome, lol
DANG ;p
While not as safe since you're not taking advantage of reach the new crusher feat added in Tashas adds the opportunity to make a quarterstaff version that to me looks fun.
Just replace sentinel with crusher, let a foe step up and get slapped with ya staff, then when it's your turn smack the foe using ya attack action and the bonus action attack from the polearm master feat, at the end of that bonus attack push the target 5ft and with that the foe must walk into you and get slapped by your attack of opportunity again.
If you have a dm that will let you use UA content then replace human with bugbear fighter and pick the tunnel fighter fighting style. much larger endgame damage with sneak attack and comes online at 6th lvl.
Sentinel +bonfire?
Evil. Of course that means we like it.
@@SkullSplitter lmao nice. Im currently working on a goblin wizard/bard. Not just great roleplaying but also: booming blade + dissonant whispers and disengage bonusaction from race if no slots. Needs rework tho. Have any thoughts or ideas for improvement? Still new to dnd
Not having to disengage as a wizard is good; but looks like you set up for face to face. Do you have the mobile feat? Might save you that need to keep that bonus action open for things you've attacked.
@@SkullSplitter oh i am not trying to melee them. Im trying to make them go away and immobilize them/kill them
Will this work with the Tunnel Fighter fighting style?
If its allowed at your table, yes.
Yeah, but Tunnel Fighter has been in Unearthed Arcana for years bc its too op by allowing infinite reactions. DM could throw 3 dozen low lvl creatures at you at lvl 4 and it wouldn’t matter.
