  • March 18, 2014 - President Barack Obama awarded 24 Army veterans with the Medal of Honor in White House ceremony. Each of these Soldiers' bravery was previously recognized by award of the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation's second highest award, which was upgraded to the Medal of Honor.
Congressional review and the 2002 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) prompted a review of Jewish American and Hispanic American veteran war records from WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. During the review, records of several Soldiers of neither Jewish nor Hispanic descent were found to display criteria worthy of the Medal of Honor. The 2002 NDAA was amended to allow these Soldiers to be honored with the upgrade in addition to the Jewish and Hispanic American Soldiers.
The ceremony recognized these 24 men for their gallantry, intrepidity and heroism above and beyond the call of duty.

Heroism knows no race, no boundaries. My family has proudly served our country for 150+ years and I continue that service today with Civil Air Patrol. I see no reason why anyone should be passed over for a military decoration just because of the color of their skin, it is immoral unfair and frankly irrelevant! As a country we must always show unwavering support to our veterans regardless of our personal feelings, we owe them that much. All these brave and courageous soldiers served with honor, bravery, and valor and for that I'm extraordinarily grateful, as are all Americans, whether they have served our country or not!

These men make me proud to be American. They make me prouder to have served. I didn't do much, but I'm still glad I can hold my head high. My family has a long tradition of military service, dating back to the American Revolution. I recently discovered that I had several ancestors and distant relatives who served in WWI and Vietnam. Before that, I was under the impression that those were the only two wars my family wasn't represented in.
Four of my great uncles fought in Korea, along with my grandpa. My great uncles were Puerto Rican. Three of them served with the 65th Infantry Regiment and two of them were present at the Chosin Reservoir and covered the Marines' withdrawal to Hungnam. My grandpa was a Marine and never talked about it. But his story is for another place because he wasn't Puerto Rican.

    1. Congratulations to these deserving US Citizen Soldiers. 2. What is amazing is the number of inappropriate of vile comments being made here when US Citizens should celebrate the bravery of these humble service-persons. The same persons that defended your right of free speech (at considerable cost) thereby enabling some to publicly confirm to us all that they are in fact bigoted morons to the bone.
SO HAVE SOME RESPECT !! Listen to the text of the Presidents speech and celebrate that finally these people have been recognized. Keep your cheap politics for the voting Booth ! God Bless America.

+Allison Hunt Listening to these citations, I think these guys more than earned their medals. However, I do think that the only female MOH award, Dr. Mary Walker in the Civil War, was nothing but shameless pandering to political correctness. I don't think she was even in combat, or a full member of the armed services. Her medal was presented in an attempt to " buy her off" when she was demanding some other military benefit, an award of military rank or pension, I believe. Walker's medal was later rescinded, along with many others by a review board, but later reinstated during the Carter administration after lobbying from a female descendant. As far as any Jews not being worthy of the MOH, there was a sergeant who died after ordering his men to retreat while holding of the enemy with a machine gun during the Korean War. By all accounts, he was liked and respected by his men. He was only recently awarded the MOH after a review board reexamined his case. ( Sorry, I don't remember his name ) As far as I'm concerned, this delay really DOES show anti Semitism. Also, I don't know what your problem with Jews is, but I suggest you get over it " I will bless them that blesses thee, and curse them that curses thee " ( Jews, the descendants of Abraham ) Genesis Chapter 12, verse 3

    • @superpadave2

Growing up in the 90's we were teenagers who thought we the toughest around. Never really knew the extend of the TRUE badasseray of the old man that visiting our at times home when my friends, and I would walk in. My mom & stepdad didn't really mention much about his times in the Service. Even less about his war experiences. Of course we did very much respect him as our elder, man, and Grandfather. However, as an adult I can look back in a whole new respect, honor, love, and pride of a true American Hero.. 🥊💙

Troops landing at Utah Beach had a relatively easy landing, due in part to this successful assault. Colonel Robert Sink, the commander of the 506th PIR, recommended Winters for the Medal of Honor, but the award was downgraded to the Distinguished Service Cross due to the policy of only one Medal of Honor awarded per division, which was awarded to Lieutenant Colonel Robert G. Cole.
Award the Medal of Honor to Major Richard D Winters, Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment.
