Not gonna lie, the single coolest and most impactful bit of level design is the game showing you that you can climb walls with the GLOO cannon. With that, the game cracks itself wide open, because I’m sure without it most players wouldn’t have even considered the platform cannon to be usable that way.

I'm so glad you recommended people to play it without HUD elements at the end. Aside from the zero-g sections outside the station my second playthrough was really elevated by not having automatic waypoints and quest markers everywhere. I think I even kept physical pen-and-paper notes that time.
Since you said this is the most perfect ImSim, yet it isn't a masterpiece, are there any immersive sims you do regard as masterpieces?

The opening track "everything is going to be ok" is Mick Gordon's best work.
Game is legendary. Top 5 all time. Mooncrash might be the best dlc, even better than old hunter's.
This game is so genius you can stop the final set of enemies from ever spawning if you are clever enough. That's insane by itself.

What an underrated game, it's so much fun but not frustating that made me always want to come back and play it, shame that it won't get a sequel like deadspace did

I agree with all your point except for your rating of the music 😭. I thought Prey’s music was sooo good, probably my favorite soundtrack in a game.

One of the greatest ImSims ever made, and definitely Colantonio's best game he's ever done.

Mooncrash and Typhoon DLC made me learn the game mechanics to the tee.
Basically a damn good Rogue like minigame.

There is an upgrade chipset for the scope that enables it to detect lower level mimics. It is handy for scanning a room before trying to pick up objects.

    operators
    cystoids
    mimics
    phantom
    etheric phantom
    thermal phantom
    voltaic phantom
    nightmare
    poltergeist
    technopath
    turrets
    telepath
    mind-controlled humans
    weavers
Never really agreed that the game lacked enemy types when they are more defined by their abilities and how you face them different'y, mimics and phantoms are easy to beat with a wrench but trying that wrench in zero-g (with imprecise movement and 360 degree manuverability) against a Weaver is much harder.

      @PassTheSnails 27 дней назад

My discrepancy isn’t necessarily that there isn’t that many enemy types in the game,
But rather, there aren’t too many ways in which for the player to interact with them.
On my first playthough now. 90% of encounters in this game go like this: blast it with a shotgun until it dies.
Some more gameplay variety in the enemy types we have would have quelled everyone’s issues with the enemies in Prey.

Thank you for making a video about my all-time favourite game man. Also FYI, Chris Avellone was a writer on Prey. Yeah, the Planescape, KOTOR II and New Vegas Chris. Explains alot.
Also, STRONGLY disagree on Mick's score, Everything's Going to be Okay, No Gravity, Alex's Theme, December and January, Mind Game, Sacred Geometry, so much of my GOAT playlist is Prey's music. One of Mick's best work hands down (although the last 2 tracks were actually by the game director Raphael and his band Weird Wolves).

    • @triplehelix3207
      @triplehelix3207 7 месяцев назад

worth noting that Chris Avellone only wrote for a few characters in the game like Mikhaila and her quest but most of the game's story was written by other people. I find it worth noting because despite liking the game a lot, I find it aggressively bland in so many other places like the enemies past the mimics themselves.

I just started playing this game again for my 3rd play through this week.. I first played it early last year .. it’s really just something special.. it’s not perfect but it is without a doubt one of the most immersive games you’ll ever play, the gameplay and all the tools u use r just amazing to play around with, and not only that but all of it stays true to the in game world, all of it is practical and logical to exist in this world, and yet it’s also just super fun to play as a video game ar the same time .. I mean u just don’t see this kind of stuff too much anymore.. for my money, prey is one of the most masterfully crafted games and game worlds I’ve ever had the pleasure of interacting with
In all honesty I’ve just fell in love with every single arkane game I’ve ever played - though I haven’t played redfall - and I think prey is probably their best work overall

Woah never expected to get hit by nostalgia so hard (especially when it was only 3 years since I bought and played Prey)
Also "fun" fact: Somehow random copy of this game that I bought, that was in "didn't sell so it's on discount" box in store had still working preorder code for bonuses.

That this game sold as badly as it did is criminal.
This game is Paranoia Incarnate, although the Enemy Variety is pretty poor, having to go for Elemental Recolors to add variety, each type of enemy you can find , for the few they are, is genius design, especially the Mimics.
Sure, after a while it cna get repetitive, but you still go with small steps, paying attention to every bit of environment around you.
Why are there 2 trashcans there?
Should there be a 3º chair there?
Oh, 2 pieces of ammo, I was running out of- 'Face devoured by a Mimic'
In my playthrough, I went only with Human Abilities, rejecting the Typhoon ones to keep the Security System on my side.
And I ended maxing all of them once I got the blueprints for the NeuroMod.
It felt like I was playing the Engineered Perfect Human, fighting hordes of aliens and pushing back both through extreme violence, through clever tactics and circumenting problems, and expert stealth.
It is such a dam great game.

You really overreact to the mimics 😅. Mimics follow rules and are generally easy to sus out. The real tricks they play on you are when you haven't seen one in awhile.

Loved that game because it was the only game I know that made you walk into a room and shit yourself at the furniture because you thought it was going to eat you.
Lotta people like to talk about how amazing Prey 2008 was but I played that game back in the day and I have no idea what nostalgia they have for it because I thought that game sucked ass and yet they rag on this Prey for daring to destroy a possible sequel to a mediocre xbox 360 game.

"such a horrible flops" my man, Redfall is horrible fr, but Deathloop is great. I'm writing this while Arkane Austin is closed, but Arkane Lyon (responsible for Deathloop) still has some of the team that made the impeccable Dishonored 2 (like Dinga Bakaba and Dana, that one who made Clockwork Mansion). I don't get why some people hate Deathloop (well, I do, but I'd rather not comment bout lol), but it's one of my favorite games, super fun with a fresh concept, an answer to save scumming, at the very least intriguing.
I love immersive sims, Prey 2017 is one of my all-time favorite games, but it seems like the super nostalgic crowd thinks only the old formula works. Don't forget about the indie immersive sim scene; there are some great new ideas emerging in games like Gloomwood, Cruelty Squad, Skin Deep, Aquametsis, Peripeteia, Corpus Edax and many others.
