I’ve been wanting a dog and my mum finally said we MIGHT get one but I know I gotta be prepared and you are the best with that as you do great with dog
I did the same type of training. On our morning walks, we pass by a known pair of dogs. One of them Oliver loves hanging out with while the other is a barker for pedestrians and dogs walking by. Oliver would pull towards the dog wanting to pick a fight. We kept walking by every walk by daily and at first, I kept him as far away as possible to have Oliver walk by with no pulling. Each day we would move just a little closer and finally, after two weeks, we can pass their house on the same side of the street and Oliver just keeps walking by while ignoring the other dog who is still a heavy barker.
I love watching this series when I’m feeling frustrated with training my 1 year old dog. Great reminder to keep my expectations realistic and that they won’t be perfectly behaved in different situations right away
My dog is pretty good for the most. But same as you, when another dog is interested he LOOSES it. But every time we go for a new walk he ‘resets’ no matter how much of this kind of training we do. Your videos help a lot
Oliver Chambers have done that mate - as I said it’s only when a dog gives mine the ‘side eye’. With regards to the ‘reset’ comment, I meant he resets at the beginning of the walk, but he very quickly comes in line after 2-4 minutes of his training techniques.

I really appreciate that you show us these incidents , because I am soon getting a dog and really want to be prepared for when I get one !!! This is more appreciated than you'll ever know ! Thank you Zak and Bree !
Thank you. My dog is barking at neighbors when she sees them. I was practicing having her off leash and walking with me when she saw two neighbors walking; she darted over to them, barking at them and scaring them... It was pretty embarrassing. I had to walk over quickly and put my hand up to signal and say, "Stop." I asked her to sit and had to gently push her bottom down a little. I put her gentle leader and leash back on. I haven't used treats in a while, but I think after watching this, she and I may have to hang out near where my neighbors might be walking more, and I will use the treats and try to get her to look at me. I was trying to socialize her so much in positive way so she wasn't scared of people from age 3 months to 2 years but the pandemic has confused her a bit now (2.5 years old now) since she doesn't see much of anyone except for me now!
Zak at 4:15 in the video Inertia doesn't really seem excited but more scared/ freaked out by the noise of the bikes moving on the bridge. Her tail is down almost between her legs and her ears are pinned back.
Thank you for sharing your love for our furry friends. My daughter and I are watching your videos, and recently just taught our 10 month old friend Ugo, to give his paw. Only took him 5 minutes to get it, we humans took a bit longer. LOL You're awesome, Zak.

Very relevant to us! My dog has always been a little nervous around bridges on the trail by our house, but recently as we approached a bridge, a huge group if cyclists was coming. I kept her off to the side to let them pass. She didn't get reactive, but the noise must have really scared her. The next time I was walking her, coming from the opposite direction even, she stopped about 100 ft away--so far that it took me a while to realize that was why she stopped (I checked her paws for thorns thinking she was hurt!). It's going to take a lot of conditioning to get over this one! I might even try walking her in her thunder shirt, since it seems to reduce her anxiety.
I just wish I could do this more with my 6yo Aussie rescue Zephyr. AZ is getting HOT, get home at 9am can usually get an hour in at the park across street before it gets unbearable. What makes it extra hard to socialize is that by 9am lots of people have already stopped walking their dogs due to the heat. Zak - I will be getting a purebred boxer puppy in about a week. I want to train her to bark at "strange" noises to alert us of unknown potential threats outside the house. Is there a video or chapter in your books (we already have your "Guide To a Well-Behaved Dog") that will help me train her for this? If not, could you give me some ideas on how to do this?
Hi Zak, you're actually not desensitizing her.. Desensitizing and counterconditioning mean that you are changing the emotional state of the animal towards the trigger. You are going over her threshold many times in this video which means you applied management many times when it would not have been necessary if you kept more distance. Inertia's emotional state does not change this way. It is probably more useful to start from further away, only taking SMALL steps forward, feeding treats as Inertia sees the trigger (so she does not have to focus on you yet!!). This way, the trigger is paired with something pleasurable (food) and the behavior can be modified rather than suppressed/managed. Then as she progresses, you continue the desensitizing / counterconditioning, so now she does not get the treat when she sees the trigger, she gets the treat when she sees the trigger and then looks back at you.
Hi zac I’ve watched your clip on barking outdoors, I have a chion pup 9mth old and he’s fine outside with dogs and animals, ducks, birds, geese ,cats and birds. But since lockdown he’s struggling to cope with humans and growls more and more, it’s his nerves as he shakes, I even tried picking him up and he still finds hard, also only barks at neighbours if our next door is out back even though he knows them and also anyone knocking on the door send him into a barking frenzy. What is best way to help Charlie? Thank you🐾🐶
In the beginning you were saying that it’s good to “manage” rather than train in those situations. What are some good tips for managing that wont take away from the training process? Meaning like should I turn him away and calm him or keep him there and continue to comfort as they pass ?
Lol I apologize I paused the video and asked that question but after I kept watching when the bikers came by and you didn’t have time create distance you answered my question! Lol thanks man!
I have a younger pitbull who I’m having trouble with getting excited on walks when she sees other people and dogs. She tends to do a lot of growling for the most part, and while I know she’s just excited and wants to play, when most people see a growling pitbull they assume the worst. Would you recommend anything different as far as the growling goes, or should I just continue trying to distract her as much as possible and get her to look to me for reassurance?
Dang over a year old and can't even do this. I been saying all this time u can't train her under high distractions. All those fancy tricks don't do u any good if u can't even walk next to a other dog or bike etc.
