easily the most exciting player i've ever seen. Feel sorry for those who didn't get to see him live TV didn't do justice to him. you had to see him navigate the field around him in a windy candlestick park. had no interest in baseball thought it was boring until i saw what he could in the field seemingly at will to delight of the fans.

Willie Mays was a great inspiration to me. In honor of him, I wore number 24 everywhere I played except in Japan. As a foreign baseball player, they gave me number 10. I was also a center fielder. I learned how to play the outfield as a kid by watching Willie Mays and Al Kaline. I never tried to make the basket catch. Only 1 player could ever do that with the grace and ease of Willie Mays!

    I am heartbroken.
I am not a Giants fan by any description. Willie Mays was one of the greatest to ever play the game. I never got to see him play, never met him, but stared at his baseball cards as if they were made of gold. I watched videos of him among others, in awe. They did something I so crazily tried to do. He had the talent and the drive, I just had the drive.
I am as sad today as the day my Father passed, and my Father would not be insulted by that.
I have a little shop with a few pictures on my brick wall, that show my customers that it is a store of comfort, warmth, and personality...and these are my favorite life things Willie's catch is one of them.
There are a few people that I hope have a very special place in wherever we go when we pass. I want Willie to be there, and I hope I am there too.
I know this was sentimental and selfish, but damn...

My first sports hero. I remember being eight years old, just discovering baseball and watching my first MLB all star game in the 1965 season. This one black player was introduced and the crowd immediately jumped to their feet with a rousing standing ovation that last a while. Growing up black in the Deep South during those years of segregation and racial tensions, l was amazed by the respect shown for that black man at that time in history amongst all that turmoil. This was still less than twenty years since Jackie Robinson was initially disrespected in every way possible. That player was Willie Mays. Back in those days we only had two (clear) television channels and one tv game a week, so whenever l saw Willie Mays (maybe once or twice a season) it was something special

When Willie Mays walked up to the Pearly Gates, a booming voice came from the other side that said, "Now starting in Center Field ..."
Tonight in heaven everyone's batting average just went down 50 points. The young Say Hey Kid now eternally patrols center field, running down every ball in the gaps with his easy speed, making those iconic basket catches and flashing that dazzling Willie Mays smile to let everyone know that he had the catch made as soon as the ball left the bat.
    Rest in Peace.

I was never one for stats and crunching numbers like how the players are judged now. One did stick out for me about Willie Mays in his 22 years he hit in only 54 DP's. Another story I found was the only time Mays faced Satchel Paige in the Negro Leagues Paige was looking for Mays told a teammate tell me when that kid comes up to bat. The catcher said here he is Satch to which Paige came off the mound and told Mays kid I am not going to trick you any I will throw 3 fastballs then you will sit down. Paige threw 3 fastballs and Mays sat down
