Having Jon do softer vocals than Caleb in the verses is an interesting inversion of their usual dynamic, I love Caleb's harsh lines! Really awesome twist on a great song!
They've been inverting the dynamics quite a bit recently, with Jon doing the higher vocals sometimes, Caleb singing harsher.. it's nice to see

...so...I wanted to point something out, on my favorite version of this song...
...if anyone else has played Skyrim, and specifically the Dark Brotherhood questline...one of the DB quests is actually called "Whispers in the Dark". It's when the Keeper Cicero bemoans the lack of a Listener...at the precise moment the Night Mother speaks to the Dragonborn and _names them Listener_ ...
...so...due to my fondness of Cicero...I always imagine this song playing when the Listener is finally confirmed, and she vows to protect and adore the Keeper...

Honestly, I interpreted this song as a Wingman singing to his Flight Lead in a Night Fighter Squadron. "My love is a burning consuming fire" = Jet Engine Afterburners. "No, you'll never be alone" = Covering the Flight Lead. "When Darkness comes I'll light the night with stars" = Pinging out a bunch of enemies on the Radar on a night mission.
I actually find it to be romantic...but hey maybe that's just me.
