Downsizing is seriously such a great feeling! Even if it’s not just plants but other things in your home that don’t bring you joy. I am definitely the type that has a sentimental attetchment to almost everything I own so it’s soooo hard for me to get rid of things but I’ve been trying! And it’s helped me maintain my space a little better between two kids a husband a dog and a Guinea pig… and 350+ plants 😅

I put a few plants I no longer wanted out front in a box for someone to take, they were gone in under an hour, felt so good to remove the ones that were no longer bringing me joy
I water by room and not all on same day so I don’t feel as overwhelmed. I’ll do my cabinet more often as it’s warmer in there with smaller plants, so I always check them first. I’ll do living room in one go, bedroom, etc. instead of all plants in one round
Sometimes I’ll put cookie racks across the top of the sink and water a bunch of plants in a group, give a good soak then go back and remove them once they’re done dripping through. If I’m doing other things while waiting for them to drain, the watering doesn’t feel like it’s taking a long time!

I have 3 sections of my house with plants, so I have a small binder in each space with a page for each plant (watering, pest control, repots...). It's simple for me to just flip through as I'm walking around admiring my plants and see what needs to be done. I feel like it's probably the paper version of a plant app.

I'm definitely a tracker type person. I have monthly spreadsheets on my Mac with plants in the lines (organized by genus if I have multiple plants of that genus or by type of plants eg succulents) and days in columns. I have abbreviations or letters that I use to indicate what I did or what happened to that plant. Eg: x means watering, w (wash) means shower, PT means pest (thrips), PM means pest (mealybugs), I write "new" in the day that I received the plant or brought it home, LGL if I water the plant and fertilize it with liquid gold leaf and so on... At the end of the month you have basically an overview of the plant care of your entire month of your entire collection. The only time consuming part is writing down your very first plant list, other than that it's just typing short abbreviations and updating the list with new plants or plants you no longer have.

These tips are spot on!!!! It’s so easy to get overwhelmed but taking it day by day. A few plants at a time. It’s wayyy easier to manage and doesn’t seem like such a daunting task. I glance at my plants daily and will just do little by little whenever I feel I want to. Great video!!!!💚💚💚💚💚

Tracking is very helpful. I do this with watering and fertilizing. Ever since I tracked my watering. I have not had a root rot problem, and the reason I stared tracking was because I lost a beautiful ZZ Plant to overwatering. I made a note to track my watering to reduce the chance I don't make that mistake again. It has worked, now I know when to check to water, since I have the date of the last watering. My collection isn't too huge, so I can manage this tracking. It also reducing the stress of figuring out when I last watered, so recommend this for plant owners with small/medium size collections, like mine. It might be harder for 100+ plant owners.

An excel sheet definitely helps. I use it to keep track of my waterings, since I always under- or overwater (and nothing in between🙃) and can never remember when was the last time I watered them. It is color coded, which makes it more fun hahah.

The key to having a plant journal that you keep up with is having it close by when you're doing the chores and bulk of maintaining your plants. If it's easily accessed and you can see it your brain will recognize that you can use the journal since it's there. It can become a habit if you leave it where you can use it enough and see it. Object permanence is everything, for me at least.

I've been quite pleased with the Planta app. I use the free version. Can easily track watering, and keep notes and pictures regarding fertilizing, pests and repotting. It reminds me to check certain plants/rooms and reduces the mental running list of "plant things" to think about each day.

I know some people arnt fans of plant apps but i swear by the Planta app! I have 117 plants (probably more since i have alot of unknown cuttings and mixed pots on top of the 117 species pots), I work full time, im in grad school, i have several pets, and am always sooooo busy and forgetful! Ive been using the app since i started collecting and its so nice to just wake up in the morning and check the app to see what plant chores i need to do. And all of my plants are super healthy and thriving!

another thing i like to do for keeping track of what ive done is use a dry erase marker on my green house cabinet or glass shelves or use post it label tape on pots to write down the last date ive done something :)
and for pest prevention I hate using sprays and pesticides but i have noticed that bottom watering, useing fertilizer spikes or inorganic fertilizer instead of organic fertilizer, and using a chunky potting mix stops most outbreaks! especially the fungus gnats which are the hardest to get rid of

Great tips!!! As someone who loves travelling I've considered semi-hydro many times, but I'm also a serial overwaterer and like having drainage. My solution has been to keep most of my plants in a soilless aroid mix, made fairly water-retentive with extra coco peat and vermiculite. All of my plants can now last at minimum 7-8 days between waterings. If one starts drying out earlier than that, I up-pot it, and because the mix is chunky I haven't had any root rot issues doing that. I can at least go on week-long vacations now without worry-highly recommend!

I use a plant care app, you make a picture, give a name, set reminders for watering/fertilizing and ad notes (like when you had the last repot or when did you treat it for pests).
I check it every day ( i turned off notifications because i don't want to feel stressed) and then i will see what plants will need water . You can easily add a day or two, or reduce the number of days inbetween watering. At the moment i think i have about 125 plants and without the app i was checking on the same plants every day and others i was forgetting.
For pest management i used some systemic sticks (i live in Germany , i didn't find granules) .They are great if you have only a few plants to treat, but i did have the start of a thrip infestation and i imidiatly ordered beneficiary mites and released them in all my plants. The thrips dissapeared and after a few weeks also the beneficiary mites, they die once they don't find food anymore. A few weeks ago i noticed red spider mites in my alocasia corms propagations ,so i ordered some mites for them too. As far as i can see, it worked again.
The downsides to beneficiary bugs are the cost , you have to get them when you see the pests imidiatly (if it gets very bad , you might need multiple species in bigger numbers) ,and that it takes a bit of time until they stop the infestation.
But it beats having to treat over 100 plants and it was fun watching them patrol over the leaves :D

I travel for work so theres generally 4 days a week I can't do any plant care at all so many times I have to do big batch watering. However, for my thirstier plants I utilize self watering pots and these things I got on Amazon called "plant nannies." Its a clay spike you put in the soil and then you set a bottle of water on top, I use the 1L smart water bottles. My peace lily and my outdoor plants have done really well with them, which is great because my outdoor plants are in 90°F heat right now.
I dont have a greenhouse cabinet, but I do utilize a table top greenhouse tent for my more finicky plants or plants that can't dry out too much and it has worked so well. It stays around 90% humidity in there.

I am totally the same - if my kitchen is a mess when i need to do plant chores, I can’t do it! I have to clean the kitchen up then by the time I’m done my motivation is gone. Also, I def need a podcast, video, or show to watch while potting. I do all my chores on my kitchen floor with a big potting mat and just set all my stuff up around me, works better for me that way. Usually a cat or dog is with me too 🥹

I have about 70+ house plants and went through the stage when I really didn’t enjoy them anymore ( I lost my dog recently and it was one of the reasons I was down in general)
Anyhow .. I do agree on lots of your tips as watering whole plant collection in one go is nonsense. Plus I definitely try diluting my fertiliser and water every time. Fertilising is one of mine biggest nightmare😉

I'm someone who keeps several of Google docs on my collection: tracking my spending/sales, a spreadsheet of all the individual species/cultivars (with notes for things like parentage, or if/when the plant bloomed), and an unorganized word doc where I copy/paste descriptions that sellers provide so that I can word-search and reference them later on. I keep a lot of orchid seedlings and I've been pretty diligent about maintaining the info I have about them, so I think most people will find this level of documentation to be overkill! But one step to keeping track of some stuff (like dates purchased, or when you repotted, or whatever you like to track) could be to just open a Google doc and jot notes when you think of it. I just started tracking my spending this year because I wanted to keep myself somewhat accountable.

I also don't like having doubles in my collection but lately, I learned a lesson. 😅 Finally, my Verrucosum was growing so well pushing out new big leaves. I had 2 propagations that were also growing so well. I sold the propagations and then wanted to make my plant bushier by dividing it into two stems... I cut the plant and it totally hated me. 🤕 Now I don't have an established plant but only 2 wet sticks...😩 I am so sad and pray that the ones that are left survive so I can make a new Verrucosum plant for myself... So if I have a plant that I genuinely love, from now on, I will at least have a double just to be sure. Especially if I grow them through propagation. They are used to my space and tend to grow even better.

Great video Fern! I took one of your tips awhile back and made myself a list of plant to-do's. I find that much less overwhelming than walking around here daily and only making mental note of "that one needs a pole," etc. Now when I see those needed tasks that havent been completed yet I'm not overwhelmed because I know it's on my list and I'll get to it. I also water like you do, a small section or at least a few plants daily. I used to try the entire collection, or an entire room all at once....3 or 4 hours later..... I'd be drained. Having fewer in the sink or shower each time allows me to really inspect the leaves. And yes to downsizing the ones we can part with!!! I'm always looking to make plant lovers of my friends & family and now have a few who text/call me to ask for a few more....I love it! The only tip I would add here because our styles are already so similar, is to frequently move your plants around!!! This is a great way to find appreciation for certain plants, give them "prime real estate" (south/west windows) or just admire them from a different angle. I'm always moving around my jungle here.... for those with husbands or family that complain, "another new plant?" this is a great way to keep them guessing and blending in the old with the new, lol. "Oh that one? No, that one's been around forever" ; )

Great tips. I use a lot of the ones you brought up. My favorite ways to make my large collection not feel like a burden:
    1. You mentioned this -- I have been potting together "alike" plants -- like I had two monstera propagations that could be in the same (larger) pot, so I moved them in together. Same with two small spider plants. And I have three pilea and two peperomia hope I think I may make "roommates" in two pots (instead of 5) next.
    2. I like using the Planta app to make sure I remember to water/check on everything. BUT I don't water just based on the app. I check soil, leaves, weight of pot, etc. and "snooze" the ones that aren't ready.
    3. I agree with downsizing and also not re-buying plants that died that caused me a lot of stress (no matter how cool they looked).
    4. When I start to feel overwhelmed, I give myself a week when I just check on plants every other day (normally I like to do it every day). Which is sort of the opposite of your "water less plants more frequently" idea, but still works for me. :)
    * I like the shower idea, too, but usually I don't move them out of the room they're in, because it feels overwhelming to carry them too far.

Thanks so much for the tips. I know you didn’t mention this one today but THANKS for the orchid spray fertilizer tip for Hoyas! My babies are exploding with growth. I haven’t seen any blooms but they all are rather young and I’m not much into flowering.

I totally agree with how u water your plants, I have over 200 and I water a little bit every night and it's so much more manageable that way, if I watered them all at the same time it would take me all day lol so I break it up and do a little every night. I also lightly fertilize everytime I water rather then having to keep track of what has been and when.

After following the big pandemic plant obsession I have definitely slowed down and rarely buy plants now. I have what I love, know what I don’t love, and am accepting of my space restrictions

Try out Tyler Trashers “Grow A Damn” plant journal! There’s even a fold out section for gardening. Plus, it’s just a gorgeous journal in general. I love mine.

When you said watering your entire collection would be a procedure, I felt that in my soul 🙃

  • @Mandi_Hui

I have really down sized my plant collection have like 40 now compared to at the start and only keep what I truly love and also have more time with them now. I split my watering schedule as not all plants needs at the same time. For example Alocasia and plants needs constantly moist soil i do those once a week. Cacti and succulents and Sansevieria they can be like 3 weeks plants that don’t need so much water. Hoya’s every two weeks. These are like Summer and Spring months. Autumn and Winter once a month. Except plants that needs moist soil can concentrate those more.

I'd be interested to hear about semi-hydro. I started that on a couple of months ago and have recently discovered what looks like blue-green algae, which I think is the really bad kind & some black mold. So, I'm guessing I'm supposed to be taking the plants out and sterilizing the pumice? Maybe the pumice on top isn't supposed to be exposed to light? I am starting to switch all my ferns to self watering & will try my Calatheas next.
