I grew up with Bjorling and Merill and that was the "best", but Domingo and Milnes teach me that there is no "Best". God and nature give us many "bests".
This duet is always an arrow through my heart. My most humble suggestion is that all these wonderful artists have their own distinctive "signature " so that there is, perhaps, no "best" performance, afterall, but a matter of individual taste? After all, there are many superb chefs in New York and London ! A most pleasant dilemma. (Just having fun here. Don't really know if my main thought holds up under scrutiny or not)
Right. Tell this to the ladies waging an almost religious war on who was the one and only German lyrical tenor, Fritz Wunderlich or Rudolf Schock. They were both excellent singers, I adore them both, but I have no understanding for going for each other´s throat about the question who was the best. They both sang Nadir in German, each of them breathtaking in his own way. Best wishes from Northern Germany
Brianna08051919 What a great reply. Thank you. I have a great passion for the ballet, as well, and every ballerina has her own signature. Surely, this is something marvelous.
Of course your thoughts hold up - they are your own thoughts and as such no one can assail them! I agree that our tastes dictate who we prefer - and even the so-called experts disagree violently about which singers are 'best'. Vive our own opinions.
Milnes played Scarpia in the 1976 movie of Tosca filmed entirely on location in Rome. Raina Kaibavanska (sp?) was Tosca, and Domingo played Caravadossi. Milnes was the most arresting, dramatic, and musical Scarpia of all, his voice at its peak, his acting magnificent. The movie itself is exrtremely well directed, beautifully cast.. and beautifully produced. I can no longer get it on youtube, but if anyone else can, look for it.
The first time I heard this, it was Bjorling and Merrill, and I loved it - and still do. But Milnes and Domingo do a beautiful job of it - and no matter whether it's the one or the other, I am always in tears by some moments into the piece of music. I suppose that for me, as a native French speaker, it's as much WHAT they're singing about - the importance of being friends, and being faithful - that gets me. I just flat enjoy both of the versions, and so should we all. We are so lucky to have the means to remember these performances. What both sets of singers do is LISTEN to each other - and Milnes and Domingo, IMHO, are two of the absolute best "acting singers" that ever graced a stage. You can believe them.
This is wonderful, not just the singing but the acting as well. Find Milnes and Domingo in Tosca with Milnes as Scarpia and Domingo as Caravadossi. They played off each other well, with Domingo a strong Mario, unlike other tenors. I also love James Levine. Bravissimi.
Gracious, I remember this very duet (and Verdi´s no less beautiful "Don Carlos" duet) sung by these two singers on GDR TV. I was 15, came across Placido Domingo for the first time - and was enchanted forever.
Thanks, Wansob. The best videos. Milnes and Domigo. ¿What else? Brilliant. I started loving opera thanks to this singers, and that fantastic disc of duets they made years ago.. xx
Oh, I'm so jealous you got to see him live!! I never got that chance! But I did watch him on PBS every chance I got, and I was very happy to see him perform on PBS's recent airing of the tribute to Pavarotti. Milnes has aged gracefully, and his voice is still powerful. He sang in an aria from Boheme. What a delight to see him again, even if only on TV! But yes, his Iago is the best. I remember watching him as he sang "Credo in un Dio Crudel". Gave me boosebumps!
Wow... everytime i see two great singers singing together i see some kind of competition to outstand, but this duet... i love how the melted their voices together
To me, this duet with Milnes and Domingo, made the most "sense" because of the English translations provided! These two drop-dead gorgeous men were acting their parts in synchronicity with the music, not just singing a wonderful piece of music. I have listened to all the other versions mentioned here, and can distinguish where some voices may have more preferable characteristics that others don't, but keep returning to this because the visualization that these two fine artist/singers/actors provide makes the scene alive and real with emotional meaning. Of course, that was Domingo's forte: in movies and on television, making opera accessible to all. It was really a golden age as well.
In the 1970's I bought an LP in London with this duet, it still is a treasure, then few years later 2003, I attended a Placido's concert in USA, NW Florida's Gulf Coast, the Concert of a Lifetime, which indeed it was.
OMG Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! What a fantastic pair these guys are! They rival jussi an robert with this duet!!! I defy anyone to say different!!! You are Brill WANSOB!
Of the 3 Three Tenors I have always loved Domingo for his rich tones and expressiveness. We miss him at Washington National Opera as a performer and artistic director. He was as warm and charming as his voice having had the opportunity to have talk to him on several occasions at WNO!!! Mario Lanza is my other favorite tenor
Opera in the Outfield is at Nationals Stadium, for those who are interested, and it's free to all. The Mars company that makes M&Ms is the largest sponsor and there is lots of free chocolate. This past spring I saw The Magic Flute by Mozart which was done in English and was hilarious. It's a simulcast which is better than sitting in a stuffy opera house. The food is great ball park stuff!!!
One of the best arias ever, the duet of tenor and baritone is sublime ! I must say though, having been to the actual opera and unfortunately read the translations, I was disappointed.

I was privileged to see and meet Sherrill Milnes two month ago when he spent a weekend with the Asheville (NC, USA) Lyric Opera. There was a reception in his honor, then he came to the opera company's Gala later that evening. The next day he gave a master class to 6 young singers and we got to witness that event. We got autographs, pictures with him, and I got to chat with him both days. Great! And isn't this a great duet by two great stars - one now retired but the other still going strong!
1983, we are remembering the real operatic singing, which we are loving, most beautiful
Outstanding performance by all. In tears well before the end.
Their voices complement each other perfectly. A joy to listen to.
I grew up with Bjorling and Merill and that was the "best", but Domingo and Milnes teach me that there is no "Best". God and nature give us many "bests".
Блестящее выступление, спасибо!!!
Ditto on Bjorling and Merrill. Just hearing this go as I write. If had ovaries, they'd be popping.
Wise, true, open-minded, but rare
right you are!
So true
One of the most beautiful sounds ever
Magnifico duetto ❤️
I find myself getting out of breath as I listen to this. It is because I am holding my breath to be able to hear every note! Divine duet!
This is the best duet of the "Pearl Fisher" I have ever heard. These two voices are
perfect together, also in other operas. Absolutely wonderful!!!!
ALYSSA THEODOSSIOU Not only their voices, but their acting. Bravissimi. James Levine too.
This is great, but listen to Jerry Hadley with Alan Titus or some other... I love Domingo, but..
They both don't sing the notes...no, rather they both caress the notes....I agree with you.
You must be familiar with the Bjorling and Merrill. That's the one for me.
this duet is good, no doubts, but Kaufmann and Khvorostovski did it no less greatly:)
I was in heaven til an ad popped up half way through ! Beautiful rendition of perhaps the greatest duet in opera.
Magnificent clear voices Domingo and Sherril.
An old video, but what a strong voice Placido Domingo had!
このコンサート全曲を、現代の技術で画質、音質ともに修復して、是非商品化して欲しい。後世に残すべき素晴らしい演奏です。
Milner was a gorgeous hunk...sang wonderfully too! Young Placido's career did pretty well!
This duet is always an arrow through my heart. Incredible rendition of one of the most beautiful Tenor-Baritone-Duets in opera!!! Plácido is and will be forever... THE GREATEST!!!!
Perlų žvejai, labai gera opera ir geras duetas!
What a beautiful duet ! Two of the most beautiful voices of today !
Of today? I don't think Milnes sings in public any longer and Domingo is now close to 80 years old.
Breath taking performance. James Levine, Sherrill Milnes and the great Placido Domingo at their peak. Excellent! Thanks a million for the video.
Divine! One of my all-time favourites.

Sookey Capote , you can buy that TOSCA sung by KABAIVANSKA, DOMINGO and MILNES in the best MUSIC SHOPS and , I think, on AMAZON too !!

Ronald Duquette - These two made a wonderful Scarpia and Cavaradossi as well. And I just love James Levine.
two men with sensible musicality-just beautiful

This duet is one of my favorites.
Their voices are so beautiful together. Best tenor/baritone combo EVER!
I prefer the Tezier/Vargas version at Baden-Baden 2007.
pdfan33036 I am partial to terfel and alagna's version, but this is lovely as well.

Two of the BEST in their prime. Brava
