RUclips suggested this. Turns out it's irrelevant to what I was searching, but I watched.... I hoped to find some timer remotes mentioned. some of my cameras have special capabilities that cannot be combined - hi res plus time lapse for example.
I use a Vello Freewave which is very similar to the Pixel 221 you describe. No issue (so far) with the battery cover falling off. Works like a charm and has multiple channels.
HI Jerry and thanks for your kind words. Yes it does, at first I couldn't work it out, but then I played around a bit and worked out if you hold the button for a longer period (maybe 2 to 3 seconds) and release it, it actually holds the shutter open until you press it again, this way you can use it on the bulb setting. Cheers, Ben
Awesome Ben!! I actually purchased the JYC after watching your video! I'm usually sceptical about buying non-branded products especially, when it's not Nikon but I'm softening up and after watching your video, which I must say was clear and recommending, I felt assured. The wireless would be my next purchase. Thanks for the advice and clarification Ben. p.s. the JYC wired shutter release was just as you suggested; for the price, you would think otherwise but its doing a great job.I have respect for reviews like yours!
Absolutely fantastic post. Getting ready for an extended vacation, and trying to muddle through all of the "Reviews" is a pain, because nobody can agree on a product. THANKS FOR A GREAT REVIEW OF THE PRODUCTS!
I just purchase a generic "Progo" shutter release for $5 so I can get good shots of fireworks and such. It's for my Rebel t3i (learning currently) do you think this was a good idea? Might get a better one as I learn more
Hi Ben, great info. Does the JYC have a model number or something, I'm having difficulty finding it online? Can you provide me with a link maybe to somewhere I can purchase? I have a D5200. Thanks.
Hi Barry and thanks for your comment. Usually with JYC they copy the manufacturer OEM model number. For example, the OEM model number for the Nikon remote is MC-30, if you google JYC MC-30 you will find their equivalent. I think the d5200 uses JYC MC-DC2 - I am not 100% sure so make sure you check that it is the right model for you. Also, since making this video it looks like JYC have re-designed their remotes to include more features, so I will buy one and check it out... then I can make a new video! I hope that helps you... cheers.
Really great review cobber! I like the tip about changing the frequency. Great to see a video review by someone that actually knows what they're talking about!!!
Hello Ben, great video!! very helpful I'm looking for a wireless remote for my Nikon D5300. But I would like it to do both single shots and bulb function (with lock mechanism). The last one you showed (RFN-4s) can it do both these? Thanks!!
+George Sinadinov Yes, you can absolutely use the Remote for video! I do it with my D800 all the time. All you need to do is go into the Custom Settings menu, select Movie, and assign the shutter button to Record Movies and Voila! Just make sure you switch to video mode before pressing the remote shutter. It will even autofocus when you press it halfway like the factory shutter release button. Works with both live view and viewfinder.
I own a D810 for two years and now I have a pixel 221 :) after I had watched your review. Pixel 221 was the cheapest on Amazon and I preferred it. But it is really very good. Thanks for your help :)
Ben Fewtrell TheHowToChannel I was able to get my RF4N to work for video on my D800...all you need to do is go into the CUSTOM SETTING MENU, select MOVIE, select ASSIGN SHUTTER BUTTON, then select RECORD MOVIES and there you go! Works like a charm!
Ben Fewtrell Hi Ben, After buying cheap wireless/wired remote to start video on my Nikon D5300 I contacted Nikon. The techie was great and tried the Nikon Wireless remote controllers: WR-1, WR-R10 on a test and confirmed the combo will start Remote Video recording. Problem is price for me but others might find it useful
well, Colin introduced me to your channel, will have to check you out but first let me hit sub button, keep up good work!!! Cheers from colorful Colorado, V!
You all make it sound so easy.. try holding a large fish that has just been caught, then taking a picture of yourself with a remote... you might be lucky if your in frame''' thats of cause if you can press the button at the same time ! ! !!
I had no problem whatsoever hearing what Ben was saying. But that being said, I don't see the necessity to run background music while someone is speaking during a tutorial. So, not thumbs up or down, but point well taken.

great to know
Hey Ben, great review! The only question is regarding the RFN-4s. Does it have a hold option on the shutter release for BULB exposures?

When will Nikon include bulb mode timer on the D810? it would make life so easy
does the RFN-4s Wireless Remote have a lock on the shutter button for if you're shooting in "BULB" ?
I also have the rfn remote, cannot get it to focus the camera while I have the d810 set for back button focusing. do you also have this problem?
Absolutely fantastic post. Getting ready for an extended vacation, and trying to muddle through all of the "Reviews" is a pain, because nobody can agree on a product. THANKS FOR A GREAT REVIEW OF THE PRODUCTS!
You're welcome! Glad I could help :D
I am not sure. Does it have the 10 pin socket for the remote like the D800?

Hi, great video very useful. Quick question, can i record video with one of these remote shutters or they are only for photos?
except having to change the shutter button to record instead of shoot.
George Sinadinov , I don't think this works for video. Cheers, Ben.

I had to give this thumbs down for that "music" that was making things difficult for me to hear you.
I had no problem whatsoever hearing what Ben was saying. But that being said, I don't see the necessity to run background music while someone is speaking during a tutorial. So, not thumbs up or down, but point well taken.
1) you talk to fast....;
2) all the new Nikon's don't have that remote plug/socket on them or a PC outlet..
You need to update your video
