Have been testing a lot of remote for the camera and flashes over the years and totally agree with your comments. I never tested RFN4s, so I will order one today. Thank you for your information.
I bought one of these for my D850, having seen this post and have been extremely pleased with it. It works exactly as you say. Great recommendation, thanks.
What an absolutely superb, informative, no nonsense, no bullshit video.. If only all youtube 'tutorials' were as good as this.. you deserve far higher viewing figures...thanks for posting it
Ben, just got the RFN-4s. Attaches quickly to D850 and fires fast. Although 99% used for astro and Mup situations, my hunch was correct...when using BBAF, you'll need to engage the shutter release for focus and manually choose the focus points. It won't 'recall' the last focus setting, which kind of makes sense. Also, 'Live-View' works perfectly for face detection...which is nice to have when alone, so I have options. The shutter got stuck a few times and fired multiple times but I probably have to get used to the switch. Thanks for the tip. Having a manual wireless release is nice to have instead of the in-body timer mode. Lots of ways to skin a cat. Looks like the unit is identical to the Vello FWM-N.
Thanks James. In my experience snap bridge and the Wi-Fi connection can be a pain in the bum. My wireless remote has never failed me works faultlessly every time unlike the app snap bridge
Hello Ben, I have the same wireless remote you are showing with my Nikon D-810. In fact I purchased mine when I saw your videos when you where out photographing, and it is an excellent remote I enjoy using it and I have the receiver attached to my D-810 all the time. You are right if the receiver isn't turned off it will drain the camera battery, so after each sessions I make sure to turn it off. The hand-held device with the one AAA battery seems to last longer, and I also carry a spare battery for it just in case it drains. I haven't used it yet for long exposures and I am glad you have and you where able to explain it how it works. Thanks for the review. Cheers.
I wonder if you soak your remote with R/O water (reverse osmoses) then set it on top of some rice to dry if it would work any better? When they manufacture micro electronics they use R/O water to clean the circuit boards before they gold plate them. This process takes out the minerals in the water to make the electronic free of minerals. Seawater has minerals and salt in it that conducts electricity. If you have a "PUR" water filter pitcher they supposedly take out the minerals and they come with a meter to check for minerals. I use to work for a company that makes semiconductors. This is just a thought and if I were you I'd check more into it.
Nice review! I use one of these wireless shutters with my Nikon D500 and I just love it! The only issue i've been facing is that the shutter drains the battery really fast!
I use this on my d500 and love it. It's been super reliable for me, and won't go anywhere without it. I attach the transmitter to a Lanyard and it hides away under my coat.
I've been using the RFN4 on my D800 for about years without a problem mostly for landscapes. I shoot mirror up (click onCE) and then click again to trip shutter. When not in use, I detach it from the camera and remove the battery. I'm trying to seemed there is a model for a new Fuji GFX THAT SHOULD BE DELIVERED IN A FEW DAYS.
After shopping around (Amazon etc.), I ended up buying it direct from SMDV in Korea.I saved a few dollars on cost at approximately $90 Australian - which included fast delivery, .It works really well on my D300S and D810.
Hi Ben, Good review, only problem with this (SMDV RFN4s)is it does not have a timer so if you are shooting more than 30s with the D810 you need an extra timer which is normally a phone. The problem with this I found is in stead of concentrating on the shot you are looking at the timer in one hand and the remote in the other - far too much distraction. I now use the Phottix Aion for my D810. It has a timer which can be set for any number of exposure/times so once I set it, I fire the shot and I can forget about the timer and concentrate on my next shot. All that being said the SMDV RFN4s would be the best if it only had a timer or if you shoot below 30's.
No, it doesn't I am afraid. If you use your custom setup buttons you can have one setting for using the remote and then quickly switch to not using the remote.
@@On3legs Thanks for the quick reply! I’m not sure how I’d do it “quick” as I only know how to change it to/from the Back Focus Button via the internal Menu (which seems a bit fiddly). I hope im Just overlooking something obvious. Cheers!
I had been struggling trying to find a good shutter release. The one you use certainly looks promising. I have since done a bit of research and I will get one. And the carabiner with the strap will be a welcome addition to shutter Release. Thank you for the tips .
Good product but have broken two of them now because receiver connection pins keep breaking. I was getting about 10 months use before pins break. Also leave on camera always.
This is very cool and super minimalist compared to other solutions on the market. That would be my D4 sorted but I wish something like this existed for my D750. Thanks for exposing me to this :)
Hi Ben, I use it with the D810 as well, Great Job but but the only slight drawbacks I have found when you leave it on the camera all the time, is it hard to press the Bracket button behind it and the Tamron 24-70 AF button sticks and moves it but apart from that, it has never failed me. Maybe version 2 will take this into account.
I have the RFN-4 for my d7100, it works well, and I'm wondering about this version for my d700 with the 2.8 Tamron 24-70 and 15-30; they're both pretty fat-barrelled, clearance might be tight.
I bought it. Thanks for the tip. Nikon makes you think you have to pay such a ridiculous price for the same thing. I have the stupidest question though. How are you supposed to attach the wrist strap? I assume the pointy little tool on the end of the strap is to change the channels. But no matter how I attach the string the pointy tool doesn't have enough leash to reach the channel selector. What's the trick? I know...throw it out and get a carabiner strap...but now I really want to know what was intended with this strap.
I had 2 of these on my D810s and found them great but both stopped working after a while. I left them permanently attached and over time one of the connector pins broke off. Great shutter release but it remove before putting in your bag.
I just saw their website and it indicates NOT to use Tamron lenses with the trigger. Has anyone experienced errors when using this trigger with a Nikon body and Tamron lens?
Great review Ben, I used this model for years with my D800 before it eventually died. So I went back to using a wired shutter release. Maybe I should look at getting a new one!

Make sure that you have changed that setting in the menu to deactivate the regular shutter button for focus.
