This is a fantastic list. I really appreciate that you have moved here and learnt as much about our culture and ethics as you have. One thing I would like to add that is very important is do not sit on tables. It is a big offense in Maori culture and most people will be irritated by it even non-Maori people as it is considered unhygienic. Sit in chairs or on the ground but never a place that is intended for the preparation or consumption of food.
I was horrified when my Aussie workmates would constantly sit on the table in the staff room. They got educated- One doesn’t eat off a toilet seat, so one doesn’t sit on a table where food is eaten. Disgusting 🤢
I love the way you pay in restaurants & cafes here. So much quicker than trying to grab a staff member’s eye for the bill and then again when you are ready to pay. I don’t know why they don’t do that back in the UK.

It is good, however it does have massive systemic issues with mental health, insatutional racism, not enough protection for lgbtqia+ youth and public transport. It's not perfect I have lived here all my life, I do love it here but it's not without fault. Glorifying any country has its issues and while I feel proud for the praise I need people to understand that just because it's better then other places does not mean it's good all the time.

Yeah as a Kiwi, I can definitely appreciate the athletism and skill involved with Rugby, but I've simply never cared for the sport really at all since being born and raised here lmao. In saying that I certainly wouldn't mind watching one of the major games at a pub if it happens to be on. Other than that it's simply not something I ever think about or follow at all.

The Māori have rules developed from thousands of years of common sense. Not putting ‘anything unhygienic’ on a surface used for eating is a rule WE ALL FOLLOW out of respect. Do not sit on tables, do not put your handbag on the table (hang it off yr chair) and NO HATS on tables either. The head is sacred in Māori tradition. Inside the home this is also a rule! don’t put your bag on the table, don’t put your hat on the kitchen bench where someone will make a sandwich later. Oh and cats are not allowed to jump up on the bench either! The exception is-if you live in an all-white household you might not have these rules to follow but as soon as one Maori person lives with you - these rules will be back for the entire household. It’s just about being respectful of other people‘s beliefs and they are absolutely right that I do not want my cat or your backpack sitting on a spot where I’m going to be putting my sandwich. This set of rules is called Tapu (sacred) it also includes not cutting your hair or cutting your nails after dark. Which sounds incredibly sensible if you’re living in a village in the middle of the bush with only starlight or fire light to see by- it prevents you from getting an awful haircut LOL Also no shoes inside and no using our huge sea shells as ashtrays. The shells are scared treasures gifted by the sea God Tangaroa, so we don’t desecrate ‘taonga’ (treasures or gifts) Lastly, before taking anything out of the bush or out of the sea, you say a prayer of thanks for the gift from the GOds. This ritual is optional these days- but it’s still cool to do.

#2 is also a problem to a degree in that a lot of NZers have never learnt to accept that it's ok to take pride in achievement and they conflate it with arrogance. Because of this we get the 'tall poppy syndrome' and the 'aw shucks bro' - it's also given NZ a bit of a cultural cringe when hearing an NZ accent overseas or why we bombard celebrity visitors with 'what do you think of NZ', fifteen seconds after arriving'. That being said, I agree with the general point in that we're not hugely heirachical and can spot someone trying to play 'common man' when they clearly don't have a clue [like the leader of the National Party, for example] :)
I've never had a restaurant bring me the bill in New Zealand, EVER, even at really fancy ones. I dont even understand the point of them bringing it to you.

Don't litter? go to one of the (too) many fast food outlets to see litter. Also a lot of fast food packaging can be seen being flung out of moving cars in NZ all too often!
A very big faux pas if your with Māori (less so with Pakeha) is to sit on a table. Basically, don’t put your bum on the same surface that you eat off of. And yes, tourists in general but freedom campers in particular, please pick up after yourselves. Nothing winds us up more than hearing stories of tourists leaving behind trash, food scraps and even dirty nappies after they leave. There’s plenty of bins around, don’t be a pig.
A thing to add to this, don't touch the tops of people's heads, generally the reason for this is because in Maori culture the top of the head is tapu (sacred, spiritual) and should not be touched by other people. Annother tapu thing is places where food goes, so sitting on tables or mats is a big no no.
I've been doing a little research about Aotearoa as I plan to move there, I actually never heard of tops of people's head being tapu, so cheers for teaching that!

Mainly correct, but many kiwis do brag about money as it's very materialistic here. also rugby, we have a great knowledge but more so on our own team, I found rugby fans around the world tend to have more of an international knowledge so in general that's better.
Also when overseas people meet us kiwis, Don't ask us what we do for a living that's like asking us for our age, it's none of their business. We just don't care. We are too chill to care what someone does for a living 😂😂

You are so welcome here... Thank you for noticing us, respecting us and choosing to enjoy you time here. Not all recent arrivals do. I hear a lot of moaning. If you are going to emigrate to NZ you need to accept that you are in a different country and a different culture. One colonial leftover is that we are like the UK 30 years ago. Can we put that misconcept to bed? A lot of us Kiwis are well aware of our shortcomings as a country and don't need them shoved in our faces every conversation. I understand homesickness. I lived in the UK myself and didn't absolutely love everything about it (especially not straight away) but I came to love the land, the culture, the history - Cambridge will always be home away from home to me - and I love and respect the many peoples of the land. All I ask people is if you choose to live here, at the bottom of the world, far away from everywhere, that they try to take on your mindset or they will always be miserable.

Just curious - I've seen a couple of these types of videos now (UK & American folks in NZ) and they have all included the not littering thing - does this mean that is generally acceptable to litter in their countries ?
It drives me insane to see someone litter. I don't know anyone personally who would be okay with it here in the south of England. But a lot of young people and teenagers will drop their litter everywhere. So annoying.

#2 is also a problem to a degree in that a lot of NZers have never learnt to accept that it's ok to take pride in achievement and they conflate it with arrogance.
Because of this we get the 'tall poppy syndrome' and the 'aw shucks bro' - it's also given NZ a bit of a cultural cringe when hearing an NZ accent overseas or why we bombard celebrity visitors with 'what do you think of NZ', fifteen seconds after arriving'.
That being said, I agree with the general point in that we're not hugely heirachical and can spot someone trying to play 'common man' when they clearly don't have a clue [like the leader of the National Party, for example] :)
And the ‘here’s some pineapple lumps, and L&p’ both taste like shite.

A very big faux pas if your with Māori (less so with Pakeha) is to sit on a table. Basically, don’t put your bum on the same surface that you eat off of.
And yes, tourists in general but freedom campers in particular, please pick up after yourselves. Nothing winds us up more than hearing stories of tourists leaving behind trash, food scraps and even dirty nappies after they leave. There’s plenty of bins around, don’t be a pig.
A thing to add to this, don't touch the tops of people's heads, generally the reason for this is because in Maori culture the top of the head is tapu (sacred, spiritual) and should not be touched by other people. Annother tapu thing is places where food goes, so sitting on tables or mats is a big no no.
I've been doing a little research about Aotearoa as I plan to move there, I actually never heard of tops of people's head being tapu, so cheers for teaching that!

Thank you for noticing us, respecting us and choosing to enjoy you time here. Not all recent arrivals do. I hear a lot of moaning. If you are going to emigrate to NZ you need to accept that you are in a different country and a different culture. One colonial leftover is that we are like the UK 30 years ago. Can we put that misconcept to bed?
A lot of us Kiwis are well aware of our shortcomings as a country and don't need them shoved in our faces every conversation.
I understand homesickness. I lived in the UK myself and didn't absolutely love everything about it (especially not straight away) but I came to love the land, the culture, the history - Cambridge will always be home away from home to me - and I love and respect the many peoples of the land. All I ask people is if you choose to live here, at the bottom of the world, far away from everywhere, that they try to take on your mindset or they will always be miserable.

The First peoples in New Zealand were the Mori Ori a totally separate people with different DNA The Maori almost wiped the Mori Ori out in the Chatham Island massacre in the 1800's and captured the women and children as slaves
