I flew Finnair Business Class from Edinburgh to NZ in Jan/Feb, 2020. 'Bought early and a very good price. I did not notice, until a few weeks before the flight, they issued the paperwork spelling my name with 'ili', instead of 'illi' (Wiliam/William). They wanted me to pay £1,000 to change and warned me, if my passport and tickets were different names, I would not be allowed aboard. After I had tried everything and Finnair remained rude and unyielding, Finnish friends phoned them and they did the name change for Euro30. They are trying to make Helsinki a European hub for flights to SE Asia, but their attitude might prevent their success. I will not use them again. The flights were nothing special and the Cathay and AirNZ sections were much better.
Well as a Finn I believe I eat Finnish food every day - believe me finnair has used some good judgement when making those menus by selecting the delicious options. There would some interesting options as well black sausage, klimppi soppa (clot soup?) or salmiakki to name few. Also a fun fact that due to COVID finnair has started make tv-dinners. You can go to you local supermarket and buy their business class meals for approximately 10 euros a piece. I tried two of them and they were actually pretty enjoyable.
Also like Finnair and agree Helsinki is a great airport....manageable size, attractive and modern facilties, and excellent location for making connections across Europe and beyond!
I was truly amazed at how friendly and nice the people of Norway, Sweden and Denmark were, and how well the countries were run. Have to one day get to Finland.
I like Finnair. They have a superb safety record. I like the Finns, love Finland, and Helsinki-Vantaa Airport is a great connection from Far East to Europe, even N. America.
I have flown with dozens of airlines. Every airline serve ice cream has the frozen ice cream problem besides Delta... At least Delta serve high quality ice cream unlike some other airlines.
All you need is a toilet under that throne seat and you'd be set. After all, why should a king have to use a commoners bathroom. Love that window by the toilet in the bathroom, for the aspiring exhibitionist. Great video and food. Thank you.
Thank you for this - when all the Covid problems are settled, we're planning to fly Montreal to Tokyo and the cost for Finnair Business Class (Mtl-NYC-HEL-TOK) isn't that much more than Premium Economy via Air Canada. You're giving us a preview!
@@PoliticalJamesNormally I'd agree (We've done the AC direct flight Tor/Nrt 12hr flight in the past.) But for some bizarre reason Finnair's business class - admittedly with those transfers - is only about Can$500 each way than AC's "backbreaker express" product. We're considering it as a chance to sample Finnair business class.
In the winter, it snows a bit in Helsinki. The Finns are not fazed by this and the airport runs completely on-time without delays. Don't worry about getting to the airport because the trains run on-time and all the roads are clear too.
A vicarious pleasure indeed. So lovely to see normality in travel. I haven't been on an aeroplane since March and miss it. This is the year I intend to retire and my desire is to have my retirement one of endless travel fueled partly with some of the ideas provided by you Paul and a few others. I love many things about the new world and many changes are long overdue but please - back to normal travel as soon as possible
Now I am convinced you are a true frequent flyer. I constantly fly international for work and I, too, occasionally book longer flights just to make sure I have enough time to sleep during the flight! Take off, landing and services can really really eat into rest time.
The fast free wifi at Helsinki airport is also to be commended plus the lack of bars on the seats makes it a comfortable place to spend a long layover. Another fantastic vid Paul!
We flew Finnair (and through Helsinki) on a trip to Russia from the US. Can confirm both business and economy class are top notch! I actually slept well in economy, a rare occurrence
Oh memories... My last "real" flight was in the same seat about a year ago, but it was PEK-HEL. Exactly like you said, not the most modern seats, but loads of space. A nice airline, with great blueberry juice! How much I miss long haul flights, hopefully soon we can go places again!
Been on that exact seat in that exact airframe, HEL-LHR. Love Finnair, especially business class - they don't fuss and fawn over you like some others, but they get the important stuff right. Short eastbound transatlantics may be miserable if you're in business class, but the last time I flew BOS-LHR in economy on a shagged-out BA 747, I was glad that a screaming tailwind reduced the misery to 5 hours. (Might've been 4.5 had we not been so early.) I find HEL to be great if I'm arriving or departing from there. If I'm connecting, I generally have either 4 hours to connect between two planes right beside Immigration, or 30 minutes to get a bus to one end of the airport, run clear to the other, and get the Naughty Bus to the second flight - and as for my hold baggage, well, let's just say that in my usual carry-on bag I have my home airport's claim form already filled out, minus the tag numbers.
Thanks Paul for this video. I have been waiting for you to do some Finnair flights. Those A330's are due for cabin rework but thanks to the pandemic I think it's postponed now. Can't wait for your thoughts on the A350 on your next leg. And some comparison of the service quality and the staff. Finnair has outsourced the Singapore flight staff to 3rd party and I'm not that happy about it.
As an Italian I remember well those days. The ""first"" Covid cases not imported were registered in the Codogno's hospital, and Codogno as well as other town in the southern-west Lombardy were put under quarantine, for a total of 150k people under quarantine. Some of my classmates at university are from Codogno, I remember they told me about desert road and empty plazas. At the time those seemed unrealistic images. In less than a mouth the entire country would have been under quarantine
I’ve been binging your videos for weeks now. You are one of my favourite vloggers. Your videos are informative and entertaining. And you are adorable. Love from 🇨🇦.
I recently discovered your channel and have been watching a lot of you videos to get me though lockdown. I was so pleased when the notification popped up.
Man, that emb-145 landing looked...firm, but the A330 one looked smooth as butter, lol! That throne seat looked so comfy. Thank you for another great video! Love your content!
If you get the chance and if they still exist after pandemic try the Admirals club showers at DFW. It includes a normal shower head and 6 wall sprayers at different heights. A truly great shower. If memory serves it was the club in Terminal A DFW.
Yup. They let us Sapphire plebs in there while they were building our new lounge, and it was very nice indeed. A bit poor on the ramp views, but you can't argue with a sauna.
I love the research you put into your video. Not sure if you've flown to Lourdes but I was presently surprised to see so many A330s and A340s stored there.
This is like looking at another world. 9 days before I was sent home from university and we soon realised what shit we were in with the pandemic. Great video, I loved Finnair & Marimekko (no I definitely didn't steal an extra amenity bag off my NRT HEL flight)
finnair is my local airline and apart from ryanair and norwegian i doubt ive ever flown anything else..... but i dont mind. the only longhaul flights ive ever done was on a Finnair A330-300 HEL-NGO-HEL and in economy class. the (asian variety) food was amazing and the staff was friendly and the seats were ok for 10h flights. Personally i like finnair.
IME the old A330 business to be a little dated, but comfortable enough, and it feels much more spacious if you're in a throne or one of the singles on the right hand side. The A350 reverse herringbone is very similar to other airlines, and works OK. ISTR that row 1 has a little more storage (I haven't flown anywhere since March 2020 due to the pandemic so it's been a while). For me the biggest let down for Finnair on longhaul is the catering, particularly the main courses, which just seem to be slopped out of a substandard work canteen. My favourite Finnair aspect is the gin bar at HEL in the Platinum Wing: while the food is again disappointing, the gin bar is a a very convivial way to encourage a hangover. I'd imagine many of the lounge facilities are currently closed though. Finnair longhaul fares are frequently competitive, and it's one of the reasons I fly them, although Qatar historically have offered superb business class deals out of Scandinavia via Doha if travelling east.
