Simply hands down my favourite film of all time...saw it when it first came out while was I studying film in Southern Ca. it just went deep in my soul. It's a perfect film...on every level. There's not a single character from Lancaster down to every non speaking featured player that one doesn't care about. Just sublimely splendid.
It is so touching and remarkable on the numerous comments in several postings I see about this film, when people allude to this being "their favorite film", for there is something quite magical, enchanting, and spiritual about Local Hero, that leaves people in a state of grace. I have watched it, perhaps 50 or 60 times, and although the ending wasn't the originally intended by the director, and a compromise to please the distributors, even that worked in its favour, for it is the most touching, poetic, and subtle ending to a perfect film. I am, by no means a sentimental person, but that lonely phone box ringing touches my soul every time I watch this film.
@@GooseMcSwan I was seriously staring into the abyss as a young person when this film came out... and it shifted my view of the world completely... such a small, simple thing that shouldn't make that much difference, but it did... and as I moved away from that dark place I heard from a few folks who also had significant life changes after seeing this film... of course its just a simple, light comedy... but the worldview is so profoundly accepting and positive that it arms you... to deal with anything
@@AndrewWells Yes, it's simple, but quite profound as well. They type of film that is transforming. Same effect on me. Never the same after seeing this.
I'm not a huge Burt Lancaster fan, but I can't think of an actor who would have done a better job as Happer. It would have been quite easy to go past Happer's eccentricity into the realm of camp/slapstick but he never strayed.
Have you seen Visconti's The Leopard, and Malle's Atlantic City? Those two films together with Local Hero should change anyone's opinion on Lancaster. He was a unique actor
What a fine film this was and is. A wonderful, charming entertainment with some real skill and meaning behind it. You just don't see that a lot anymore, if at all.
They were recorded in the same studio(Power station New York) in the same period, so that is probably true(Local Hero in March, Love over Gold from march to june)
Local hero is an amazing movie. So glad I found it. Could you recommend something similar? With that kind of subtle atmosphere, amazing soundtrack, good humour and depth. Its so hard to find a good movie these days.
6:28 - Peter Riegert is there next to Bill Forsyth! He's not in that scene. Maybe they were filming some of his scenes with Burt Lancaster that same day or something? Or maybe he was just really into the film... 😊
Riegert, whom I had the great good fortune (and it WAS fortune) to meet and sit and have dinner with one night several years ago here in NYC, is a serious actor, and at the time was considering film directing and production. He was probably watching and learning the process as done by Forsythe.
@@LazlosPlane Great story - thanks for sharing. Riegert is amazing in the film. It´s quite a complex character arc he goes through, but he communicates it subtly, superbly.

One of my favourite films of all time so light hearted and really bits of funny sections, will never be outdated.

Graduation present from my family in 1983. Dinner at Japanese steak house and a viewing of 'Local Hero'. Where have all the good times gone?
This film saved my life in 1983...
How so?

Just a wonderful movie. I saw it when it first came out and loved it. Last night I watched it on TCM and almost forgot how great it is.
Thank you for sharing this. I am passionate for this film.
Local Hero has been one of my very favourite films for years, and I am happy to learn that this view is shared by so many others.
Personal favorite film. All-time.
There are so many levels to this film. Easily my favorite movie.
One of just a few films I vividly remember the experience of watching, even though it was over 30 years ago.

WOW! Many thanks for posting this.
I'd like to think Dire Straits were recording Love Over Gold and Local Hero at the same time!!

+George Ovcinikov you might like "my brilliant career" aussie flick with young judy davis.
Oh yes and another Aussie film 'The Castle'
Check out "Comfort and Joy" (1984). It's set in Scotland as well, and is a realistic but quirky comedy about ice cream.
Shakespeare in Love is another wonderful movie, highly recommended IMHO
Before you leave school kiddies you have to watch this movie
3:48 Cell phone circa 1983. LOL.
Good movie!!!
Thanks for

Riegert being the central character, it makes sense that he would have been there for all the shots unless he had some other commitment.

Why hasn't Bill Forsyth done anything the in last 20 years? Is it because he isn't that good?
Put off after last movie in 94.
Being human in 1994 was a huge bomb and the offers must have dried up
