Moments from Local Hero: You can't eat scenery (It's red all over!)

- This is perhaps my favourite scene of the whole movie.
Victor tries to comfort Mac about his internal conflict over the sale of Ferness with the profound statement, "You can't eat scenery".
Mac then discovers one of the wonders of our universe - The Aurora Borealis. There is some fantastic drunk acting (assuming he was acting!) from Peter Riegert. His screams of "It's red all over!" always have me in stitches.
Great stuff you wont find in and Hollywood movie. Кино
Can you imagine living in a place where you can say "it's JUST the Northern Lights"?
"It's pretty technical. Nice though, isn't it?" xD
Yes, Winter is a bitch
Where else but Springfield?
Of all of the films that I have seen over the last forty years, every time someone has asked me what my favorite movie is, I tell them "Local Hero". The story, the scenery, Mark Knopfler's music, all of it, hit me hard. I was in a 60% travel job at the time and I could so relate to the feelings Mac was having and what he was going through. I was in a hotel room somewhere and wanted to be in that small town. I'll never forget how this movie made me feel.
I can't help but to get all sentimental and nostalgic. Every second of this film is priceless.
"Thank you for calling Knox Oil and Ga-ass." I answered the phone one day with this line. I almost lost my job...it was worth it.
Corporate accounts Nina speaking, just a moment
😂 classic
The line that gets me, for reasons I still can’t figure out, is near the end where the villager says, “Is that the yank away in that thing?”
“Aye”
“Bugger it. I meant to say cheerio”.
Or however it went. I kind of feel like there’s been too many moments in my life like that.
He’s just so casual about it, where to the yank in question this whole experience has been so life changing that it feels sad.
I really get that. ❤ Merry Chrimbo Mucker.
@@davecoalwood9487 Same to you, Dave. Have a good one.
Yes, agree. There is so much philosophy hidden in this film. Most scenes have a meaning if you think about it.
They start out in suits and ties, telex machines, lose the ties, the shoes, the wstches in the tide, snd end up in sweaters, barefoot and collecting seashells. Watches lost ...they watch the sea and sky instead. Found roots afterall.
"God! It just went red all over!"
That line always kills me. Damn fine movie.
I agree, some youtube clips will probably only spark a few more ppl to buy the DVD.
"No. I don't see that happening here. I don't see that at all." Best delivered line in a movie chalk full of brilliantly delivered lines. And I love the way she just appears, as if from out of the sea.
Selkie's have the gift of prophecy...and they are supposed to make excellent wives.
She’s a very magical character... though I’ve theorized that Danny is just imagining her. No one else interacts with her after her initial appearance in the lab.
@@henryhammond7393 Interesting...
Yes, she's the mermaid, in a sense. Magical, lovely and of the sea and sky, all knowing.
When Jenny Seagrove tells young Danny it's a command. With maybe a promise of a handjob.
33 years ago and Peter's voice has NOT changed.
“You’re my eyes and ears there.”
This film is very memorable, an indisputable classic.
Love love this film. It’s a film you put on when you feel the need to reconnect with your soul.
favorite movie of all time
the characters,the scenery!!!
This film brings me to tears every time. It's enters my soul in every good way.
Also, best use of a Curse Cut Short in movie history.
a perfect movie
The durge that's played in this clip always makes me well up inside.
HIGH ENERGY PROTONS SPILLING OVER INTO OUR ATMOSPHERE
i cannot watch this movie without my eyes stinging. The intangibles of Scotland's scenery are incredible. Not just the beauty of it bathed in the soft northern light, there's something else there embedded in the earth that seeps in to your body and your mind. This movie encapsulates all that. The move has as much magic and the place. It really is beautiful
Seeing a few of these clips reminds me of how I loved this movie so much . Lost 2 DVD’ so got a replacement. I cannot remember seeing a movie quite like it.
I love this film so much.
Victor, the Soviet, tries to comfort the capitalist! What a wonderful story.....
Though, said Soviet proves to be a capitalist himself.
It's a funny scene where they compare consumer goods. Great stuff here.
@@henryhammond7393 Not really, he's just making side money. He's not into the cutthroat world.
Usually, listening to this I get goose bumps.
Haahaa love this film. The music is Dire straits 'Going home', the soundtrack for the movie. It sounds beautiful played there on the tin whistle .
It’s still beautiful, I don’t care what you call it.
Great choice qarnos. GREAT choice. My favorite exchange from the movie has to be when Mac asks for more of that 42 year old scotch and, being told there is no more, quips, "well then give me 4-eight year olds and a 10-year old!!" This movie and Chariots of Fire (coincidence?) are my two favorite films all time.
One of my all-time favorite movies. Such a gentle film.
Such a great movie. I've seen it half a dozen times. Time to watch it again.
A wonderful movie! Jenny Seagrove is so pretty.
She is, indeed. Have you ever seen Sherlock Holmes' The Sign of Four with Jeremy Brett? It's wonderful and she's wonderful in it.
You speak a lot of sense for an oil man.
Beautiful Scottish Film. Great Actors/actress , Fantastic scenery, music and friendly locals. Today the Scenery remains but sadly Traitors ie Nicola Sturgeon are selling Your Heritage and Country out.
GREAT flick. Wish more people were able to have enjoyed it. His best role, after “Boon” of course.
The 12th Doctor needs a mermaid as a companion. :)
aaaahhh! it just went red all over!!!! this is my desert island movie.
One of the best scenes of the movie:)
great scene, thanks for posting
Darren Cubitt you are my local hero for posting this!
I saw this movie when it first came out- just after I moved to Houston. It's reviews made it sound a little quirky. I liked it. In the years since then I have seen it several more times and I just live it
best ad for scottish whiskey
and Scottish girls
Music - Mark Knopfler
Also, also btw, Urquet, is played by Dennis Lawson, who did the role of Wedge Antilles in Star Wars IV - VI, and happens also to be the maternal uncle of Ewan MacGregor.
URQUHART pronounced erket
peter looks SO good im in tears
High energy protons, spilling over into our atmosphere...
Also btw, the gawky teen playing the tin whistle (Jimmy) is Gordon Sinclair, the lead actor of Bill Forsyth's1981 film _Gregory's Girl_
Um, he was the drummer and the mad motorcyclist in this one.
0:42 I wish this version of the song could be purchased. It’s the best piece of music in this movie. I’m not surprised they used it in the film’s trailer.
They do have that version of the song on the local hero soundtrack. It’s shit though, a bunch of sound effects drown out the already quiet song.
On a side note, I also really like the shot at 1:01 . These two wildly different people separated by generations, fashion, and so much more, both loving the music.
@@JimmySteller Its a very thoughtful film. That scene at 1:01 speaks out for kids growing up in isolated places, having nowhere to express themselves.
Peter Capaldi seems to be everywhere at the moment
Sometimes the stairs a-line and magic happens.
BTW, Marina is a Selkie, NOT a mermaid.
ghost, spectre...same diff
@@NormAppleton that's like saying a lion and a leopard are no diff.
I have to say that this is the only film, and I'm not exaggerating that I think should not have clips on RUclips. Why? Because this film is so perfectly subtle, that one needs to have it wash over them, rather than be briefed by scenes or synopsis. Seeing this film is an experience. As much as I love seeing the clips, I cannot watch them for it dilutes the impact of being exposed to the film in its entirety. Those who haven't seen it, risk having the magic ruined by seeing clips. just saying.
Spot on, After seeing the movie, this is great, but have to see full movie first.
I think I have to agree with you. Just a beautiful little film. Simply heartbreaking.
Gives those who haven't seen it the chance to buy the DVD - no adverts - dark room - friends round - Scotch maybe...
I need tens Roddy!!
That’s still beautiful I don’t care what you call it...
words of a simpleton never sounded so deep...
the music is called like the film....
local hero (wild theme) and it's performed and written by dire straits mr knopfler
I’d love to find a cover of a band like this performing Going Home
Dire Straits?
@humbleradio thanks for that ! iv hadda look (bit of holmes fun) and you're right! cheers
"You see you? I'm gonnae trap yer wee f**kin' Gallifrey in a single f**kin' moment and leave it in a pocket f**kin' universe... right?!?... and get me a f**kin' Fanta and a curly wurly!"
Good points, but then again ... in school we (most) were introduced to Shakespeare plays via the Folger Shakespeare paperbacks, each act and scene preceded by a short summary of the action to follow. But (especially given, as here, the different dialect of English we're about to apprehend) it lets us more focus on the art. Overall, these clips whet one's lure to the film.
@TangerineTangerine I'm very interested in what you said. Can you tell me, why is it that you enjoy watching it on YT even though you have the DVD? My own theory is that we need to share these great moments with others, even strangers and preferably LIVE (being broadcast) rather than at our own isolated time and place, completely unconnected with others. I've been studying our recent media/culture transformation into 'On Demand' everything.
One of the mobile phone companies should take the clip of Mac speaking in phone booth to Felix Happer and have Gordon hand Mac a camera phone so Felix and view on his laptop. ( obvious anachronism )
Malcolm Tucker, before he became bitter and profane. ;)
This is a masterpiece. But I disagree with your description. You can find this in a Hollywood movie, just not one made nowadays. Ever see How Green Was My Valley? or The Quiet Man? There were many, many excellent films made in Hollywood's golden era.
morris u muppet
Forsyth couldn't just let any scene happen without another sub-plot. Whose baby was that, anyway?
n I put a bit colour in your cheeks darling lol in the lovley western highland accent so many great clips in this brilliant film the bury Lancaster bit in the office too with Maurice 😊😊
Pre cell phone, isn't it great.
Great film. I had only seen the terribly synchronized German version previously, but i always thought McIntyre would speak like an American, not a Scotsman.
This movie doesn't resonate with everyone I think but it sure does with me
@bittenof absolutly
i wonder what ever happened to the lady who played 'marina'.......ms seagrove!!??? is she still acting ???
Yep
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jenny_Seagrove
Amazing movie, could anyone recommend something similar? I also watched Withnail and I and loved it.
Gregory's Girl
Educating Rita.
Restless natives. Great soundtrack by Big Country...
I know where I'm going. Same place, sort of. Black and white, the makers' always regretted that. Old, make allowances for the actors' English accents. A lovely film. Tears before bedtime!!! Great filmmakers. Like Local Hero to me. slainte!
Truly Madly Deeply is totally different, but Sweet and has the Russian guy in it.... Playing a Pole! Also Rickman.
@andytubeism Look for her in The Sign of Four, Sherlock Holmes story made by Granada films. Jeremy Brett.
