She does have a magnificent pair of lungs!

A great film, one of those you can watch multiple times and see new stuff every time. My claim to fame - I wrote the software that runs that wave basin where the scene takes place.

Marina, goddess of the sea; Stella, goddess of the sky. It's in their very names. I LOVE this film.

Ahhh, the good old days, when the received wisdom was that we were going to have another ice age.

You can tell a man directed this. No way I'd untie my hair to go in the water lol.

"The director (maybe possibly writer first even) has to be a guy for this scene - especially for the move of untying her hair BEFORE swimming (as women would know that's a very impractical thing and that you'd actually want it tied up to swim". At first that's EXACTLY what I thought too! 😁
EXCEPT - you WOULD do that particularly IF you were a mermaid spy naturally skilled in molding male humans to your will and whims through very skilled yet still subtle or not so subtle (whatever's necessary) means of .... SEDUCTION!!! 😂😁
In THAT case, she would TOTALLY not only untie her hair but "let her hair fall down" as she does here as part of her preparing to swim. 😜 But also, I think it's in a bun of sorts so maybe it really is in a style that might now hold up swimming underwater.
But either way, I think there's a very different interpretation to be had here: Marina is in control of the outcome of all of this "project" (or at least that would be our hope and her aim anyway) so everything she does is absolutely deliberate including just happening to show up here at this exact moment. 😁
She knows exactly what's going on - if she knows there's a dud component / sensor in the machinery under the water (or is that just a ruse to charm the dude visitors with her surprise suddenly "necessary", normal swim - related task? - did she damage the sensor herself even beforehand or even while underwater for an excuse to replace or remove it?), she is definitely aware of the model plans they've built of the coastline. In fact that's likely one of the reasons she's there at the institute in the first place - to be aware of those kinds of developments. She's definitely a spy for her sea environment and community!
And she's a mermaid, remember - human dudes are no challenge at all and putty mush in their hands.
She gets the two visitors (aka the dudes key to the deal) in the palm of her cute little webbed hand as soon as they see her cuz: so naturally pretty and all that in a setting where they wouldn't have even expected to run into a chick much less such a pretty and intriguing one. She does SO many little things here - intentionally - and so quickly that just entrance / seduce them immediately! 😂
Within literally SECONDS of their meeting her, she:
      1) shows up TOTALLY UNEXPECTED and so cute and pretty and smart in her lab coat and glases and tied back hair and makes very direct, and perfectly professional and brief and necessary (cuz they're right in front of her) but definite eye contact with them which, even though she doesn't even really say hi, and is all business at first, the two dudesare very happy for because yay! - acknowledgement that they exist from this sudden, unexpected and very pretty sea science labcoat lady! No, sea princess! No...mermaid even! Ha ha not really! (But of course, unbeknownst to them, actually really!)
      2) UNDRESSES in 3 different ways - the glasses, hair, and coat. While looking straight at them, while still totally and appropriately all business, she not only TAKES OFF HER GLASSES, undoes her hair and shakes it loose to fall to her shoulders (only women would generally be aware that untying your hair is not only unecessary but actually an encumbering thing for swimming but it IS a classic flirtatious / seduction move - like the doffing the glasses too - recognized by both sexes but cleverly disguised here as just necessary to the task at hand ha ha!),
      - takes OFF her cool and accomplished lab coat RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM to reveal omg - her cute and sexy yet still somehow totally professional self in - omg - a black swimsuit! HANDS HER LABCOAT (AKA HER ACTUAL CLOTHING SHE JUST STRIPPED OUT OF / UNDRESSED) TO PETER REIGERTS CHARACTER - accessing their sense of chivalry as they are now doing something of trust and helpfulness - a desired favor for her - they are probably not consciously aware that she could've just put her coat on the floor or given it to one of her colleagues (instead of floor cuz her glasses were in her pocket). 😂🤣😂 and cuz only one dude can hold it at once, now immediately causes a disparity / male rivalry for her favor) and she dives flawlessly almost noiselessly into the water (all the while her colleagues sing her praises professionally).
      3) she doesn't come up for air (those "great lungs" - ha ha - now her coworkers are practically doing her seduction work for her - demonstrated) the unintended / unconscious? double entendre plus she doesn't just look in great shape - cuz the actual lungs and long underwater swim, she IS in great shape! And of course there's water and swimming at all which is just universally s3xy to begin with.
Apart from something maybe no one's catching here even in the scene - how SHE SWIMS LIKE A MERMAID WOULD SWIM - a human would swim on the surface OVER to the site and THEN dive down or even WALK over and THEN get in. But she dives first and swims to the site, underwater the whole time! 😯😳 - there and back, never coming up for air. THAT'S not something you'd just do no matter what lung capacity you had! 🤔 That is, that's how a mermaid would swim AND a spy who wanted the colleagues to feel they were free to talk cuz she obviously couldn't hear the, cuz she's just a human of course and it would never occur to them seh could hear them the whole time or at all from underwater.
But I digress - basically, the effect she has on the two visitors is that she's totally pulling off a Bo Derek like moment in the movie "10" - only in a lab, with a lab coat, and aquarium tank! 😂
      4) causes a labcoat tug of war between our two visitors while she's submerged.
      5) when she comes back up, takes back the labcoat BUT WAITS UNTIL SHES WALKED AWAY LONG ENOUGH THAT THEY CAN CHECK HER OUT BEFORE PUTTING IT BACK ON! While it's still at the same time ambiguous enough / not obvious whether she MEANT to do that for their benefit or not - like um, they already saw her from that angle when she dove and swam, "is she flirting with us or not or what maybe she just wasn't in a hurry and it just wasn't significant or deliberate, oh heck we don't care as long we can just look at her" - type of confusion! Either way, she has them under her spell from the moment they first see her.
      6) think about it - it has to NOT even be a coincidence that she happens to show up right when they are there - while she does what seems like "just" a routine underwater maintenance task that just happens to require her to do it at that exact moment of their visit and just happens to require her to strip down to her bathing suit literally RIGHT in front of them!!! Did she REALLY have to do that task right there at that moment? Right when they were discussing the project, which of course she could hear about underwater (doing her spy work) not that she didn't already know what was going on - but those new guys are there so why not listen in.
That the two coworkers claim she doesn't know about the Furness Project is so great. She's THERE for the Furness Project! And she's listening as they speak! She has it well in webbed hand. 😂 I'll bet she's even very good friends (non romantically, or innocently or may BE romantically - but appropriately enough if so) - with beachcomber Ben and that he's fully aware of the mermaid community.
Oh, those mermaids! - never underestimate them! 😁🤗
Also, good call on choosing Capaldi as her paramour. He knows how to appreciate her! 🤗
