Why isn't he "Sir Mark Knopfler?" The man has been supporting great causes all of his adult life. And he deserves to be recognised for all that he has done to help those in need.
He tells amazing stories through his music, it’s just a completely different level to anyone else. Completely agree on that too so many good causes over the years and never in the limelight about it.
Saw them when I was 15; my first live concert. I turned 55 a few weeks ago. Takes me back to simpler times and I think I appreciate the mastery more today then ever before. I was up in the nosebleeds, so I couldn't see Mark's face as he played, but the pure joy in his smile on this video says everything.
I have the feeling that MK feels lucky to have been able to live his dream, and tries to share that luck with others very often. For those kids he is a real local hero❤
I'm sitting in Balmain Australia as a 70+ year old thinking how great Dire Straits (especially Mark) were in "my day", then I come across this video - Mark you are a real legend twice over - firstly for the music and even more for your charity work, you are real LOCAL HERO

@@cormacbailey775 Thanks for your message, Balmain like most places has changed since the 1980's a very different demographic but we still have more pubs than any other suburb in Sydney.! Now the pubs are more food-orientated but still great pub culture. Unfortunately, the William Wallace (the last unrenovated in Balmain) has closed.

From Canada, Local Hero is one of my all time favourites, I even went out of my way to visit Pennan on a trip to Scotland in 2012. This Song never fails to move me. Can’t wait to hear this version
Mark is a truly unique person who has lived his life in a very measured and conscientious way. His own attitude towards living and learning every day has always been an example to me. His music lives inside of people´s minds and hearts. I have had the pleasure of hearing Mark play "Going Home" live many times. It would always be the last song of the concert and would always have a melancholy FEEL as you knew that this was IT. THE END of an incredible musical show in this supremely, talented man´s prescence. He embodies all that makes a full-bodied, fully-enriched person. Newcastle can be proud. As an English female, I am so very proud of this truly great man. I have signed posters of him on my lounge walls, a whole shelf dedicated to his music albums, all of which I listen to with great regularity. He has certainly made a "MARK" on my life and what a beautiful "MARK" it is. Everything he does is done with beautiful thoughts behind it which is why everything he does is a glittering success which millions of people will enjoy and be "ENRICHED" by. Just as the cancer patients and staff will have been so warmly touched by his visit. GREAT MAN!! Thanks for sharing.
For me, Mark never plays Going Home with enough "oomph" live, at least not compared to the studio version. I would, at best, call his live performances of the song as being a bit pedestrian, although his "pedestrian" is still a few levels above that of most other guitarists.

Dear Geordies, Hi from the Scottish Highlands. This song means a lot to us too. If you listen carefully, you can still hear the phone box ringing.... If you know, you know.
This song is so special to me. I played when I got home for the weekend at my parents farm, back in the 80s. I was so happy to be home! So I played this loud, the live version, I was home…. I was a student back then, I am 59 now. But this song still makes me feel 21 again, such a strong song. Didn’t know it was the anthem of Newcastle… sorry boys… maybe I will visit a game there one day.
What a wonderful, selfless thing to do for young people with cancer. It’s so awesome that musicians can join together and create a tribute that can go around the world benefiting those who are sick and need help.
