I was wandering around central London with a friend late one Saturday back in 1976 and came by the Rock Garden in Covent Garden when we heard this wonderful music coming up the stair well. After listening a while we paid our money to get in and spent the rest of the evening watching this band called Dire Straights. I'd never heard of them until that night and what a great night it was. They've been my favourite band ever since and I've seen them several times.
Man, you were in for some great luck that night. You stumbling upon Dire Straits just like that. Wow. Must have become one of the beautiful memories of a lifetime.

My parents were at this concert only one week after my sister passed away. I was only little so I don’t remember much around her death but I have a vivid memory of sitting around the TV with my siblings watching the concert from home trying to spot my parents in the crowd. Whenever I listen to this song I remember my little sister who is so loved and still so missed 36 years since we lost her. Love you Katie. Till we meet again someday.

No longer can I listen to this amazing tune without crying my heart out for my brother loved MK and the boys so much that he practised playing this song until it was perfect and this is how his bands, would finish the night with him playing this song and everyone applauding them so Mk thanks for the memories and one day my brother we will meet again
I was at this concert. Queued for ages for a ticket on the night but they sold out when I was 4-5 people away from the box office. I was gutted. But then someone came by selling singles at face value - so I bought one! Awesome night!
This piece, played at different tempos, gave such feeling to the movie Local Hero. A gently-paced movie filled with surprises and quirky characters, it has a wrenching ending that is no more than a man returning to his deluxe condo in Houston. Worth a watch if you've never seen it. Or even if you have.
Back in the sixties i played with a band that did really well. We use to practice in a pub, and not so slowly it use to be full house ever night we practiced there, in the end we became resident there, as well as doing at least two other gigs, a night at other places, sometimes never finishing till the small hours of the morning, but boy was it fun! Looking back, i recall doing a gig and half way through we looked at the crowd on the dance floor and realized that it we were creating their enjoyment, i think from then on we all had a different view about what we were doing. I played lead guitar and lead singer, so being out front i became more aware, even with those knowing looks of joy i got from the other players.Its a great life and there are far better rewards than the money by far. I listen to Mark and think how much he has created purely by his own ability to understand what it is he is playing, and think that he too has that feeling of reward every time he finishes a number, something he really deserves, he really is one of the greats, and i know he will keep doing it for as long as he can, because it is addictive, very much so. I also look at him and think that the effort he put into his playing is something that many would be unaware of although greatful for, Truly one of the greatest players ever, and i wish him and his other players all the very best, you really have earnt the place you hold in peoples hearts and minds truly great music that will last for many many years.
There will never ever be another guitarist quite like Mark and a band like Dire Straits! Also what a gem of a movie Local Hero is! Simple yet so elegant!

This song is a source of joy because there is nothing like living in the country of one`s birth, and sadness because as the old saying goes ...you can never go home. I was 15 years old when my family migrated out of my native country, 60 years later ...going home is impossible , nothing stands still and awaits one to come home. But the beauty of this music is how it can be interpreted to mean ....going home is the safe feeling one feels when at day`s end we rejoin our families , wives , children , extended family , all are likely the best type of home we can all go home to. This was used as the kind of ‘going out’ of church song at my Mums funeral, and the pallbearers timed the lifting up of my Mum to with when the track KICKS IN. It was just my way of ‘a message’ of love to my Mum and how I felt it best to say goodbye to her. I’ve also been to St.James Park, Newcastle Utd’s ground, and had the pleasure of hearing this GREAT song there. It just captures, I don’t know, I can’t explain it. Just, wow.

Ideal closing song on the Brothers in Arms tour; I think John Illsley was the only member of the band who didn't play on the original recording, so it was essentially a Dire Straits track anyway.
