I honestly played the PSP version first. But I love both. This was my first video game I ever got. And as you can tell from my profile pic, I’m a huge fan. I miss the series.
@@leatherhidegaming I was fine with them. But I really want to play the original at some point to tell the difference. Tbh, when I heard about the original ps1 version and how it handled, I couldn’t believe that that was how the original played. Here are some difference I know of. On PSP, you only have 3 gadget slots, which leads to switching gadgets out more often. Jump was “X” on PSP. Most gadgets you use by just pushing or mashing the button assigned to its slot. Like the hoop dash thing would just me mash gadget button to use, instead of rotate the stick. For about half a second after you would hit “use gadget” like the net for instance. You could rotate the left analog stick to change its direction. Similar to how the right stick would choose the direction of gadgets sometimes. I’ve played the original Ape Escape 2 so I have a basic understanding for how the controls worked, and honestly, I like the PSP’s more. But I believe I 100% have bias and am just used to the PSP’s controls.
I like the original PS1 game since everything in that one was more detailed and the little sky boxes were very nice to look at(the game itself had a very unique cartooney art style and wacky character designs especially for all the characters like spike, the professor and the Pipo monkeys) I'll say this about the remake and that's their decent attempt at bringing back an old game with some good voice actors(like Richard Horvitz who voices the main character, Spike)but for a hand held console such as the PSP it doesn't work as well due to the game's gimmick being the analogue controls and not the directional pad unlike other PS1 games this one stood out when it came to control setups.
If I hated anything for my Vita AE OTL it’s the controls among anything else. Good freaking GOD I absolutely hate how they handled the controls. Just some examples. Capturing the monkey on the hammerhead, reaching the specter coin in thick jungle, hitting the Goliath’s chest for the final hit, the Sky flyer, and the log part of wabi Sabi wall are prime examples of me raging over my game
The art design of the psp version is noticeable that they threw it in the trash, in addition to the lighting, animations and control that looks more orthopedic and worst lol
if they had announced a remastered ver. of this ape escape for the ps5 I would have made it my priority to get a ps5 as soon as it came out. however, it seems as if Sony had forgotten of it. kind of like they also forget about Jak and Daxter. it's quite sad if you ask me.
@@MR._KAT The sad thing is… they didn‘t even forget. They have PS5 avatars for them. They‘re basically shoving us the middle finger in our faces. Why Sony??
It will come back eventually. Ape Escape is a very beloved franchise, especially in Japan. One great thing about Japan that unlike the west, is that the Japanese actually take great care of preserving their old classic series, and franchises; even if its something small, to keep memory of them alive in the imagination of people.
I really want to play this game with the PSP voices and graphics but with the PS1 controlls, details and lightings on a big screen. Best of both worlds!
So wild to think that Ape Escape 1 has four different English voice casts, given both the original and remake had different casting for the PAL and NTSC versions. The fact now both are on PS+ makes me BEYOND super happy. And I've gotta say, Tai Kamiya and Invader Zim as Jake and Spike really grew on me over time, goofy as it is.
Thinking about how they could have improved the controls on PSP: D-pad: Select Gadget Analog stick: Move R button: jump Face buttons: Use gadget L Button: switch to secondary mode (secondary mode) Face buttons: control camera (like in an N64 game) (secondary mode) R button: Crouch
On the ppsspp emulator you can map the d-pad to the right analog stick for full camera control. It's not the same as the playstation controls but it works.
Not to mention the psp has no analogue stick something that Ape Escape had been known for at the time since the entire game revolves around the analogue stick and pays no attention to the directional pad(the left analogue was meant for moving in any direction while the right analogue was meant for attacking, the buttons helped switch weapons, and the trigger button was your jump button)
That's cause he uses emulators in all these vids. The resolution makes a BIG difference as that's a major lacking component from PS1/N64 era. He should note his vids that they are emulated with higher rez.
@Brandon Piperjack 1 it's easier to get the PSP ver. on the vita, if you get the .iso file, you can also map the d-pad to the other analog stick on the vita. 2 the PSP remaster has lower resolution textures but has better character models. I think the reason why they went with those textures is that they were going for a more cartoony look. this style kind of stuck with the entire series instead of the more realistic look the were initially going for.
What would’ve made this game on par what the original is if they simply would’ve tried rerouting controls to have it just like the original for my Vita download version. This game feels a bit untested with shit like catching the hammerhead shark monkey or reaching the specter coin in thick jungle
To me Ape escape 1 looks better than 2 & 3. There's so much grimy dark textures that are well detailed it gives the game a tonne of charm where as the other games went way too minimalistic in how they looked.
This title, along with 20-40 other titles really should have been added to the Sony PS1 classic... although I am not complaining too much (Jumping Flash 1 and Intelligent Qube are rare puzzle video games that I have only recently discovered). 👍💪😒😨😮😊
I just wish the PlayStation classic had a better library of PS1 games cause they sure had a lot of original games and exclusive games they should have also added the analogue stick for games like Ape escape.
I honestly loved playing the PSP version. Yes, the resolution can be a bit improved, and the loading times can be definitely shortened, I have an absolute love for the game. Getting it for $7 was a great deal, and I wouldn't mind at all if I got it at $60!
60? Don’t have your standards too low pal. But yeah I got it for like 5 bucks and for having AE (bargain bin version even) on the go is nice to have , so it was worth it. The only thing I hate a lot about the loading times is that every time you enter a room the music resets, which is irritating on levels like crumbling castle as I have to wait in a room just to hear my favorite part
I just finished On the Loose for the first time ever, and grew up with the original. It was interesting to see that I feel like the original did just about everything better. OtL had technically better character models, but I thought the original's art style was better. Similarly, the voice actors are better actors in OtL, but I thought they were better overall in the original, not just in spite of their corniness, but because of it. Lighting was better in the OG, and the music seemed to take a downgrade too. I think the *one* thing I can give OtL is raft controls are far better. They were atrocious in the original.
facial expressions feel a lot more grave and fitting with what's happening on the screen. but the PAL versions are still THE most superior versions to play for Ape escape. Specter is far more menacing then the US version. PAL version actually makes them 10 year old children. not mid teenagers
Specter definitely looks more evil in the PS1 version which is better. Also, jumping looks better in PS1 in my opinion, not sure why they changed it. On the PSP it looks like as if he's struggling too much to jump.
Never played the remake but I appreciate how it looks/plays almost exact. But I can't play it. Spike to me in the first game is how he should sound. Like a late teen that went through puberty. The deep voice is what I was fond of, especially when he says "gotcha" 6:13
I think the new character models in the PSP game look really nice but I’m not big on the animation & lighting. It kinda makes everything look a little stiff/dull in comparison to the PS1 which I feel pops out more. :0
