  • This was a very VERY hard video to make, and I knew it would be, which is why it took me so long to make Rayman 2 Side by Side comparing Playstation 1, Playstation 2, Nintendo 64, Gameboy Color, Nintendo DS, 3DS, Dreamcast, Windows and the iOS. It was a journey to get here. Hope you enjoy this video.

If I remember what Michel Ancel said in an interview, they actually started development on the Dreamcast version first but had to restart development on the N64 after Ubisoft execs informed him of an exclusivity contract they had just signed with Nintendo which angered him because he was going to have to put the big beautiful version they had already started on onto a system with a smaller color palette and with less space to work with. To him, the DC version is the definitive version as he excludes any version he did not work on (PS1, PS2, DS, 3DS) and because he and his team put a lot more effort into that version than the others they made where the DC version was maybe 50% done when order came down. He's stated that Revolution is somewhat of a port of the DC version and that he somewhat liked what they attempted with expanding things but did not appreciate not being consulted on the many unnecessary additions and changes made to what he already considered a great game that didn't need any changes.

@@RookerVision, some of this is covered in a video series Tim Schafer (Psychonauts, Grim Fandango) did with the devs of various games that influenced Psychonauts and Psychonauts 2. Here is the Rayman 2 epsiode, and, full disclosure, its been since the video was uploaded since I last watched it so I may have misquoted some info as I didn't have time to fact check the video (and various articles I've read over the years) and my memory could be off to way off. Still, it's cool to hear this stuff from the source and Michel Ancel even did another episode for Beyond Good and Evil.

And if they waited ANY longer, we would've had a "Duke Nukem Forever/Last Guardian/Beyond Good and Evil 2" situation.
You do know that Rare only released one game on the Cube right, and it's one a lot of it's former members at the time disliked in how it turned out?
Also "too much on a cartridge"? Really? Because, that's more impressive than anything else. Resident Evil 2 on N64 was "too much for a cartridge", Star Wars: Battle for Naboo was "too much for a cartridge". Even the Switch with the likes of Doom 2016 and Witcher III are "too much for a cartridge".

PC version had unlocked framerate and since even low-end monitors worked in 85 Hz at their recommended resolution, many PC owners played this game at 85-120 FPS. Especially those who had PCs from 2000+. This game like many others on PC scaled really well for higher resolutions and framerates. I've played R2 in 2002 for the first time and I remember how super smooth it was.
Of course as with all PC games you experience might vary. Users on low-end or older hardware might got only 15 fps or even less.

Thanks for making this vid, and reminding us how awesome this game still is. I myself have played the PC and PS1 version and Revolution on the PS2.
A thing I had to say, was that the PS1 version also added the darktoons for some reason! You run into them a couple of times. It's pretty cool to have that throwback to Rayman 1 in the PS1 version, which only that one has.
I enjoyed Revolution the most and played again last year with my PS2 with HDMI converter for 480p. I think that version has the most to offer, because so many things like the hub world and the upgrades were added. Definitely my favourite version! Cheers man!

Definitely right. I have an dchdmi/DC Digital modded Sega Dreamcast and regularly play this game. I can confirm that the segment on the right is, in fact, DC - the high-resolution textures, texture filtering, particles, and colors just pop like no other version, especially if being played with that mod and using the 480p resolution - I also have the PS2 version and the textures are lower resolution and muddier than those found on DC. The textures on the PS2 conversion are reminiscent of those in the N64 version, but slightly better texture filtering and a bump in resolution.

The ps1 version will always have a special place in my heart as it’s the version I grew up with. It might not look the best and there were some things left out, but it’s the version I prefer because of the changes they made, like fighting Ninjaws in the sanctuary of stone and fire, the voice acting to this day still makes me chuckle despite it not being very good and the final boss is.... well, it’s different, it feels like Razorbeard is actually putting up more of a fight instead of either sending homing projectiles or raising the lava level.

It's a shame there is no "definitive" version of this game. Some platforms have the best controls, while others have the best visuals or added gameplay elements and features.
I played the N64 version first, but never got to beat it because I had borrowed it from a friend. Played the Windows version so much that the computer would overheat and it changed the color of my disc. When I bought the PSone version on PS3, I was surprised at how much of the levels' layouts were changed/removed from the N64 version.

I go back and play it every so often. However, the Dreamcast version is my favorite. It just looks stunning on Dreamcast and sounds gorgeous (again on an HDMI modded console).

    Nice video! Keep 'em comin'!
Back in the day i bought "Rayman 2: The Great Escape" for PC when it came out in 1999. There's was a chance to buy an N64 version as well but i bought it for my PC instead. The game felt great albeit there were some major problems with my system requirements due to a limited processor and other elements that i didn't thought of that time. In retrospect my first ever PC was awful but i used it over a decade before i finally bought a new PC. Anyway, the game's textures were blocking my view and because of this all i could see was cloudy skies everywhere and i had no idea where i was going! Somehow i managed to finish most of the game's levels until one bizarre bug occurred. This bug was a huge robot pirate skull blocking all the game's view while trying to say: "Please place another cd to play" or something like that. There was no "another" cd-rom around so i couldn't skip the skull which meant i couldn't finish the game. When i tried to quit via the main menu the bug didn't go away until i found the "quit game" text and pressed enter! Even today i think it was one of the most frustrating technical difficulty/gaming moments i have experienced...
Any similar experiences with someone else? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
