  • This week we’re discussing a news series we're creating to become a better shot with a rifle but also how recreational shooters might contribute more money to conservation than hunters.
A few news stories from this week include the following.
In Alaska the Bureau of Land management has released their final supplemental environmental impact statement in regards to the construction of the Ambler Road where they have recommended "No Action".
News of chronic wasting disease potentially infecting humans has been spreading like wild fire in national news, but our friend Jim Heffelfinger has pointed out that the article that is often being cited, is NOT a scientific study, it is simply a short report of events.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife just released their draft black bear conservation plan that shows that bear populations are thriving in the state and there is more than enough room for hunter harvest.

I often shot 300 - 500 rounds per day, 5 days a week in the 1980's as a hunter trying to become a better shot. I improved from missing deer at 50 yards to hitting a dime 3 out of 4 times at 125 - 140 yards. Two guns, Savage model 99E and a Savage model 110L. I found it to be most enjoyable! The down side was that I stared recognizing bad shot opportunity's and no longer poked and hoped!

Just got into reloading myself after I bought a 7mm rem mag and the ammo is double what my .270 cost. Now I’ve spent about $2500 on reloading equipment and building a reloading bench for my bedroom. It leads you down a rabbit hole 😂. Nosler bullets are still the best hunting bullet in my opinion. All these eldx bullets are too thin in the jacket. I’ll take a partition or long range accubond anyday

Been tellin' you guys for two years! Get into the l.r.p. game to become better all 'round shooters and better hunters. Good on ya for jumping into it. (Whether or not I had anything to do with your decision at all!) It will make you better shooters and better hunters...not just on a flat range but also when shooting steep angles uphill or downhill which is where I seem to recall some of your misses occured on live game.
Also suggest you get your optic sponsor to provide first focal plane optics with milradian reticles and dump those BDC scopes that are limited to a specific cartridge to be effective. Not kiddin' either. Whoa! Now I stepped in it. Flame suit on! Seriously, I look forward to watching your growth and hopefully I'll learn a thing or two as well. Good luck guys.

Just heard 2 interesting facts: NSSF estimates that the average is 8 shots per dove and that there are right around 10 Million doves taken annually. So thats 80 MILLION shotgun shells just for chasing one critter.

Yes the recreational shooting sales definitely contributes far more do to quantity consumed, but everyone I know that shoots recreationally also hunts so it’s not like it’s different people. Yes people like my grandfather uses the same box of 30-30 for a decade, and some target shooters don’t hunt at all, but for most of us who enjoy firearms and the outdoors we enjoy all parts of it albeit in different portions in accordance with our tastes and finances.

Take a look at the Chargemaster Link to save a bunch of time. You just tell it how many grains of powder you want, tell it auto, and every time the powder pan gets set down, it trickles out the powder to 0.1gn. I just picked one up and it's SOOO much faster.

I hunt, fish, and shoot, but I shoot way more than anything else. The biggest thing that hunters can do to support the shooting community is to push for Using Pittman Robertson dollars to build good accessible shooting ranges for the general public.
If every Metropolitan area a shooting range with an hours drive That had pistol bays, rifle ranges out to 1000 yards, and a clay course, then it would Lead to a tide that would lift all ships. Like Hunters, the number one thing that precludes people from enjoying shooting sports is access. In this case, good safe ranges within reasonable distances to where people live, that are also large enough to handle the amount of people that want to shoot.
As an example, I shot a USPSA match this past weekend at a local range. There were 65 competitors, and people had to be turned away from competing because there was not enough shooting bays available to handle everyone that wanted to sign up. The average competitor shot 200 rounds of ammunition. So 13,000 rounds shot, times the average cost of one round of 9 mm, Equals about $360 in Pittman Robertson revenue from one 4 hour Saturday morning match Living in the south, I know most hunters do not spend the amount needed on PR items to raise that amount of revenue in a year, heck, maybe even three or four years.

Most hunters surely don’t on just hunting, but most of us are enjoying all of the above. Sure some target shoot more and other prefer to hunt more, but both are enjoyed. I do agree access to good shooting ranges would be great, unfortunately that’s a politics thing trying to get and keep a range open. Most ranges around me have slowly disappeared because of things like noise complaints because they build a house next to the range out in the woods and then complain about the noise.

Hope the series involves ARCA rails and tripods. Using a good shooting tripod for hunting is a complete gamechanger for basically everything.

Couldn't agree more! Each rifle does have a rail system and the guys go through each build, in depth. We're looking forward to sharing the videos and hope you'll tune in!
Last fall, Marcus made a video in which he mounted an ARCA rail to his rifle. Almost all of our camera rails and tripod receivers are ARCA, so makes sense for us to mount the same rail to our rifles. Here's a link to that video, check it out, if you haven't already! - Blake

@@Fresh_Tracks Just watched that one. One thing to mention to Marcus is possibly carrying a pint-size Gamechanger with Git-Lite fill. He doesn't appear to carry a rear bag (at least in that video) and the GC can be used for both front and rear support. I carry one when hunting.
Having said that, I'm sure his gear and setup have evolved since then.

Read the Long Range Shooting handbook by Ryan Cleckner.
Kind of drives me crazy, people just dont know how changing position can greatly change your outcome if not practiced.

“Influencer hunters “ , HOWL, etc did not think about the fact that sport shooters are the reason for the majority of Pitt and Robert’s fund when politicians were coming after ARs or any other type of gun control. It was literally crickets, hopefully next time they will speak up

Shot gunners can spend lotsa money on just shooting! A $10,000 trap gun is nothing! I've seen $100,000 shotguns in magazines before. Archery is also prolific but archery is a fraction of the cost of long range precision rifle.
