I learned more in the first 10 minutes of this video than hours and hours and hours of watching other videos combined - on this lens. And this video was from 7 years ago. Thanks Jason!
Excellent presentation. Thanks for taking time to go over the lens options of Full, Portrait and Macro. I just bought it to keep my A7RIV company, they get along well. Your watch and model (gorgeous) crop and full image examples 'tell it all'. Awesome!
Hello when I put it in manual mode, I zoom perfectly from a distance, but when I shoot the zoom it disappears and the photo is seen from afar, what could it be?
I've been going through a rough time past few weeks and this really cheered me up. I learned and laughed. I needed this. Thanks for giving so much of your time to keep your fedoras and fedoraetts up to date.
Thank you! It actually warms my heart to know that more than anything, the video made you laugh and lifted your spirits....I'm so happy to hear that..:)
THANKS Jason, after watching this video I rented the 90mm for a (first time) wedding shoot of my sister in law. What a great combo with the A7riii. Even in dark environment still able to (slow) auto focus. The portraits (sunny weather) are beyond my expectations, so sharp and the colors and contrast looks very nice. Your video's and humor (and piano playing) are inspiring, well done.
You explained everything so well as many have pointed out. The 0.5 to infinity is best for portraiture and the 0.28-0.5 is for macro but what’s the best thing to use Full for?
Coming from Nikon to Sony has been quite a journey and I am leaning daily ...this lens is a beast and getting to know it has been a learning curve, BUT thanks to your great tutorials the learning has become so much easier, you convinced me to move over to Sony from my DSLR...once in a while just for comfort I leave the house with Nikon and I still love everything about it,time will decide for me ...great tutorial
You explained exactly and well on what to expect with that lens; you aren’t the only one to mention it is one or the best closed -up lens available now. You convinced me (again) about the Sony product; the first time you talk and test the Sony A6000, you sold me that camera is perfect for me, and still loved it! Thanks to still mention that lens is also a gem with A6000, A6300 and the A6500. You got me to that lens 😉. Thanks Jason.
The past few week I've been debating whether to get the Batis 85, G Master 85 or the 90 Macro and until I saw this video I was still completely undecided. Either be unable to buy another lens for a few years because of the cost of the G Master, get the batis and have a pretty great portrait lens or get this macro for a similar price, but also having it function really well for macro and comparatively very well for portraiture, so the macro it is. Your video really helped, Mr. Lanier and it could not have come at a better time! Thank you so much!
Thanks for the great tute - silly question but why would you use this marco lens as a portrait lens over another 90mm?- was he just explaining the fact that it is also a great portrait lens as well??
I have an old Ramron 90mm f/2.8 Macro wit its aperture jammed at f/2.8. However, it worls decently on my A6500 for portraits which I usally shoot wide open...
I can't stop saying that YOU ARE AMAZING! And to wonderful Brenda, she's magical. How you gather such Amazing Crew is really a thing of interest. Any tutorial on what to look out for in Building Your Team
I am on a budget and this is my portrait lens. Well the Tamron version of this. I scored the 90mm Tamron VR which is very similar quality to this lens if you can find it. They came out with a newer version which is almost identical. That being the case if you can find the right one... not the non-VR one... but the first VR one I got mine for $400 a $300 discount off the normal price.
Thank you for this video I have this lens and was thinking about getting rid of it as its not used much. I was going to get the Sony 85mm f1.8 but after this I think I will start using it more. I used it on full for most things except macro so now will try it again. Thanks :-)
Thanks for this man. Just deciding whether or not to go with the 90 mm macro or the 85mm 1.8. Think you've made up my mind. Awesome work you're doing Jason.
Neil Matthews I actually got both. 85/1.8 first, then the need for macro the 90/2.8. I like using the 85 for portraits coz of its lightness compared to the 90macro.
You probably found the answer since it’s been a year, lol but he meant that switch that says Full on it. When he says macro mode he means the switch being all the way back. And portrait mode is in between full and the back
Hi Jason, I got a query on MF! I know the FE 90 have a push pull to switch either Manual focus or Autofocus. Can you direct me on how do I Manually focus using FE 28mm or FE 55mm as these two lens does not have a push pull function, thanks in advanced!
I had a studio photoshoot with the same combo yesterday, and this lens is THE SHARPEST LENS EVER! No joke. I own about 16 lenses (mostly the sharpest lenses I could find), and this one tops them. It's quieter and faster than the 105mm f2.8 Micro-Nikkor (VR), and the Nikon version doesn't work with Sony a7R II (adapted, it's hunting focus, doesn't lock, just hunting).
I've recently purchased this lens with the A7iii . WHen I use the lens ring to zoom in, it zooms automatically to max and loses focus.WHen i try to take a photo the lens zooms out.WHats the problem?
Hi from Greece! Does this lens work effectively with Eye-AF? It is such a useful feature. Are there any native "full frame" or "APS-C" lenses that work or don't work with a specific body? As you suggested, DMF is very usefull, but it seems not wanting to cooperate with the a6000/SEL50F18 and DMF enabled...
Love this series. I would love to see a video on the Sony 16-35 f4 lens. This is such a versatile focal length for me. I own the Batis 25 but want wider (and wider than the Batis 18). From the reviews I'm seeing the Canon 16-35 f4 L IS is the top rated lens in this focal length. Why did you go with the Sony versus the Canon? Thanks for your great work.
Pratik Santani if you are looking for just 1 lens to use. I like the 18-105, but would recommend going with a set of primes to get a shallow depth of field in your shots. I don't zoom while filming for weddings so the zoom feature is only good in that you don't have to switch lenses but you sacrifice lower fstops. I would get the 35 and 50 for sure, 90mm macro for detail shots, 10-18 for venue and other wide shots, and 70-200 for getting close during the ceremony.
Pratik Santani sigma art lenses are also really nice and a good value. I also have a Tamron 90mm macro for canon and canon 10-18mm that I adapt to my a6000 to save money. the Tamron was only $280 but doesn't have image stabilization so you would definitely want to be on a tripod or at least a monopod
Pratik Santani I don't, I would suspect that your biggest issues are going to be no image stabilization and not being sharp enough for 4K, because it is wider, it will probably be OK on a monopod and I don't have personal experience with the lens but if it is not sharp enough wide open it would probably be sufficient stopped down a little
Hi Jason, please tell me i need help, what to choose? 5Mark III + Canon EF 85mm F1.2L ii or sony a7 ii + 85mm f/1.4 GM ?? I will be very glad you think
Air love your videos. I most definitely learned a lot by watching your RUclips channel. One of my favorite videos was the one you did in Honduras with the pretty birds. I will be getting the Sony a6500 and the Marco 90mm. Keep up the good work my brother. Peace and love to all...
can anyone help me please? I can either only buy the 24-70mm g master which is ($2200) or i can buy the sony 24-105 and the 90mm macro together ($2400). which do i buy?
I am extremely happy with my 24-105 and about to get the 90mm to do portraits and macro. Seems like a better choice than owning just the one, even if it is GM...
I just want to know if it's just my eyes or if anyone else feels like this: Do you not find it more difficult to see Red focus peaking instead of the other colors?
Good video Jason 👏 4 Years ood but always actual 👌😉 i have this lense for my new FX6 but I am still in testing phase 😂 best cinematic greetings from a little german YT filmmaker 🎞 #filmmakingismypassion
Zooming in on Nikon and canon is shit have you ever tried ever doing it? It's hard and slow and if you are doing a longish exposure it's so noisy you can't even tell!
thats the dumbest thing I ever heard , that you can't use a full frame lense on a crop body LOL , I do it all the time , you have not did any live wedding shoots lately
I learned more in the first 10 minutes of this video than hours and hours and hours of watching other videos combined - on this lens. And this video was from 7 years ago. Thanks Jason!

You are fantastic! Love your video! And your work is amazing! I love how down to earth you are. Keep it up!
You explained everything so well as many have pointed out. The 0.5 to infinity is best for portraiture and the 0.28-0.5 is for macro but what’s the best thing to use Full for?
Thank you! Full is just when you don’t wanna switch back and forth. It all work best in well lit situations
@@JasonLanierPhotography thanks for explaining and the quick response!
The best review on RUclips regarding this lens. Thank you so much.

Great video! Please share a video with the same lens on an a6000...
Hey Jason, thanks for your review. Question, do you have any experience with the new Sigma 105mm Macro for Sony E mount?
Thank you Jason and the lovely and funny Brenda.
Great presentation of a great lens. Very versatile.
Thank you! And yes, Brenda is a keeper...:)

This was really helpful, thanks!
You’re very welcome!
Just bought the a7r2 as my entry into photography combined it with this 90. This video makes me happy about my purchase
Jason the 30 mm Sony macro is it just mount and shoot or do I need to change settings
which lens should I buy 85mm 1.8 zeiss batis or this one? I do potraits but would also like the ability to do macro
Thanks for the great tute - silly question but why would you use this marco lens as a portrait lens over another 90mm?- was he just explaining the fact that it is also a great portrait lens as well??
Just got this lens loving it. The sharpest lens ever
I have an old Ramron 90mm f/2.8 Macro wit its aperture jammed at f/2.8. However, it worls decently on my A6500 for portraits which I usally shoot wide open...
Such a great, multi-purpose lens

Great review and beautiful model......Im definitly getting a Sony 90mm macro 2.8 lens. Its so versital.

Awesome review, great team, beautiful and funny Brenda
Maybe I missed it, but you refer to "macro mode" and "portrait mode". What is that? Range of focus perhaps?
You probably found the answer since it’s been a year, lol but he meant that switch that says Full on it. When he says macro mode he means the switch being all the way back. And portrait mode is in between full and the back
that 90 macro is a marvelous lens... with my old A7R they was a very great couple :)

One of the best videos yet! Combines the how to of the A7rii with a great lens. Thanks.
What in you re opinion is the sweet spot , the sharpest f Stop of this lens ?
Great review and Brenda is the best! Beautiful and a great personality!

Could you do a video on your editing process and style at some point?
He doesn't want to show his editing process. That's the key of his photos results.
It's like asking KFC for the fried chicken's recipe.
murd777 it's just chicken and grease isn't it?
Will John try it! 😜
Thank you for this Jason! Your videos are always a great watch and help a lot.
I have this lens and most time I shooting only with this lens. I just love it.
Did you have the electronic shutter off or on?
appreciate the video as always Jason. do you think this lens would work well with the a6000?
Love this series. I would love to see a video on the Sony 16-35 f4 lens. This is such a versatile focal length for me. I own the Batis 25 but want wider (and wider than the Batis 18). Nice Jason. DXOMark loved this versatile lens, and the 50 macro too. Have you tried the 50mm?
Hi Jason. Love your work alot.
could you please suggest a good lens for A6300 for wedding videography. Thanks in advance.
Pratik Santani if you are looking for just 1 lens to use. I like the 18-105, but would recommend going with a set of primes to get a shallow depth of field in your shots. Brad Faber I was looking for primes and I have 50mm in my mind. Thanks for the reply. :)
Pratik Santani sigma art lenses are also really nice and a good value. Brad Faber - Any idea how is Neewer 35mm f/1.7 manul lens?
Pratik Santani I don't, I would suspect that your biggest issues are going to be no image stabilization and not being sharp enough for 4K, because it is wider, it will probably be OK on a monopod and I don't have personal experience with the lens but if it is not sharp enough wide open it would probably be sufficient stopped down a little
Hello
Is this lens much better than Canon EF 100mm 2.8L USM for a7r 2 for macro? Used canon costs twice less than this Sony.
Hi Jason, please tell me i need help, what to choose? 5Mark III + Canon EF 85mm F1.2L ii or sony a7 ii + 85mm f/1.4 GM ??
I will be very glad you think
Сергей Сергеевич since you asked, I'd go for the Sony..:)
Air love your videos. I most definitely learned a lot by watching your RUclips channel. One of my favorite videos was the one you did in Honduras with the pretty birds. I will be getting the Sony a6500 and the Marco 90mm. Keep up the good work my brother. Peace and love to all...
Awesome review! I’m getting this lens! 🙂
When will you be coming back to SF
can anyone help me please? I can either only buy the 24-70mm g master which is ($2200) or i can buy the sony 24-105 and the 90mm macro together ($2400). which do i buy?
Steven Kim from all my research after getting my a7iii it seems that 24-105 + the 90mm macro is a much better choice than just the GM Lens.
I am extremely happy with my 24-105 and about to get the 90mm to do portraits and macro. Seems like a better choice than owning just the one, even if it is GM...
Ok buddy portrait and wedding and macro is perfect but Mate what about landscape is it good for it ?????
Yes. I've done some landscape with it. The 90mm produces great colors.
1st Your video is are great man,, thanks for sharing the wealth. 2nd So I'm hearing that this lens is slow to focus correct?
What focus tracking is that? I have the sony a7ii and I'm still trying to learn it! I'm a greenie mofo
Great lens Jason, and as allways another great video. And tell miss Brenda hello, she has such a good personality! Later.
Hi Jason, could u tell me, which ND filter did u use on these video?
Thanks ^_^
Manuel Deplano no ND filters used
Oh sorry I saw a filter On your lens, my mistake!
The best portrait lens from sony😍
so nice mecro shot Sir
Great video 👍
I love mine too, really great lens!
Thanks for doing this one. learned about DMF mode!!!! So stoked!
Does ir perform good with a sony a6000?
Loved this video, thank you Jason.
What camera was that?
Will it work on the a5100?
Thank you. Exactly the type of review I was looking for.
I own the 90 and I LOVE it!
I just want to know if it's just my eyes or if anyone else feels like this: Do you not find it more difficult to see Red focus peaking instead of the other colors?
Toasted Synapse Gaming I think Yellow shows up best.
I know,right
Nice video bro
Best review of this lens.
Great photos
That's a fantastic lens
Good video Jason 👏 4 Years ood but always actual 👌😉 i have this lense for my new FX6 but I am still in testing phase 😂 best cinematic greetings from a little german YT filmmaker 🎞 #filmmakingismypassion
YOU ARE FUCKING AMAZING THANK YOU JASON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i had no idea how to use this lens
i have it and is the sharpest lens out there, at least with other two.. maybe..
Thank You, Jason!
Thanks!
focus peaking is a thing of great beauty
Yes, yes it is...:)
Jason Lanier but all Canon and Nikon also are capable of digital zooming in .. in live view mode .. for focus peaking... what's so new??
V.K. Digital zoom doesn't hold a candle to focus peaking. And Sony has digital zoom (focus magnification) with focus peaking...:)
Zooming in on Nikon and canon is shit have you ever tried ever doing it? It's hard and slow and if you are doing a longish exposure it's so noisy you can't even tell!
does this work as well on the a7ii??
It's designed for the Sony full frame "A" camera bodies, so yes.
Hey Jason can I hang out with you guys?
Lol I meant to say I love your videos, not Air love your videos.
Lovin' your work!
Please do tutorial in spanish also thanks ...
Which is the best camera
Also on a crop sensor it would be a 135....SWEET,,
Is anyone else seeing the gobs of CA in the edges in that watchface?
Jason loves the latin culture!
Yes I do. Always have!
Jason Lanier Virgencita de Guadalupe!!!!
Any red blooded straight man will love Latinas.
You should send me that lens if your not using it 😅 help a starting photographer 😂 i subscribed
If you haven't created blooper videos yet, you should. Especially with the offensive stuff.
Holy crap I'm early!!!
You have a SEXY personality and I LOVED this video
the sky in this video is fake
How?
Background dancing 👍
Has he stopped wearing fedoras yet
Not one of your best, Jason.
I would be embarrassed to post something as badly made as this.
thats the dumbest thing I ever heard , that you can't use a full frame lense on a crop body LOL , I do it all the time , you have not did any live wedding shoots lately
David Williams lol what? Of course you can use crop sensor lenses on full frame bodies. I've been saying that for years...
hey Jason thats one thing you and Theoria Apophasis agree on LOL
David Williams yes it is. I'm sure we agree on many things but his hatred for Sony clouds his vision...lol
