Arghh I'm so indecisive between these two lenses! The 85 is cheaper, lighter and has a faster aperture. The 90 is sharper & more versatile. Do you think the oss in the 90 handling the pitch & yaw is enough to gain a stop of light through lowering shutter speed and compensate for the lower aperture?🤔
They're all such excellent options (Sony 85, Batis 85, and Sony 90). I keep a lean quiver, so I chose the 90 Macro. The Batis 85 was incredible, but the 90 is more versatile because it doubles as a macro. Between those, I think the difference is unnoticeable unless you're pixel-peeping the bokeh. I didn't try the Sony 85, but I think it only competes if you're really sensitive to price or only dabble in portraits. Otherwise, I'd definitely pay to upgrade to the Batis 85 for the OSS and Zeiss build.
I bought both. That 90mm is really really sharp but somewhat slow AF and only f2.8.... 85mm has faster AF than the 90mm and f1.8... I do however think the 90 is overall Sharper than the 85
I have been using 85mm f1.8 and lately I bought 90mm f2.8 macro, and I used these two lenses for taking photos of flowers and models at Seoul fashion week, but I decided to go on with all two of them.. 85mm f1.8 and 90mm f2.8 macro are completely valuable lenses in my opinion. thanks for the good review.
I use both, the issue with the 90mm is heavy, slow and noisy. It also hunts more often than I like. I wouldn’t recommend it to people who don’t need 1 to 1 macro. General purpose lens like 24-105 can focus very close at 105, good enough for shooting food at close up. Also, if you shoot macro indoor like a matchbox model car, take a look at the 50mm macro which is not as sharp as the 90mm but a lot cheaper and lighter so doesn’t require a heavy duty tripod to hold it in place. For occasional macro, macro tube is cheap and can fit on most lenses. I used one for a long time with the 85mm 1.8 and 55mm 1.8 before deciding liking macro enough to buy the 90mm and a 50mm macro lenses. 90mm has great focus ring, precise, right amount of travel and easy to switch on and off.
The 90mm Macro is one of the best lenses I have ever used. But the 85 also has a place in my bag, especially at the very reasonable price. I bring the 85 for street work (for which the 90 is large and conspicuous, where the 85 isn't) or low light photography where that extra aperture matters. And of course, the 90 Macro is the best macro lens for E-mount, truly outstanding, so it will have a place for that as well.
I have both for over a year. These are orange and apple different lenses. Unless you do macro, buy the lot cheaper and lighter, faster 85. For occasional macro need, add a $20 macro extension ring to your 85mm.
I have loved my Sony 85mm f/1.8 as a portrait lens on my Sony APSC bodies for a long time and absolutely love it when shooting models. Love that focus hold button reprogrammed for Eye-AF when I am shooting with a camera that doesn't have full time Eye AF. I am expecting delivery soon of a Sony A7iii which will even make the 85mm more versatile... If you want macro - sure get the macro lens. I don't need macro capability since close up shooting is covered very well my my Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens. If I "need" to get closer, I have a set of extension tubes, But, since I don't really do macro, I have seldom used these. A big capability of the 85mm f/1.8 is the ability to blow the BG OOF a focus a bit more than the 90mm f/2.8. This is especially true when I shoot outdoors.
Hey awesome ☺️ I want a lens that has no spherical distortion, and will capture equal sharpness from center to edges of a flat surface, like drawings and paintings. Is the 90mm perfect fit for it?
I love how the 85mm lists glass for CA correction. It has really bad CA at 1.8 but it’s completely correctable in post. I just want to know what it would look like without the correcting glass lol
Can Image Stabilization at 2.8 can beat that extra stop of light at 1.8? I mean, if we want to equal the amount of light into the sensor for one picture, can the 90mm 2.8 with a lower shutter speed and Image stabalization beat the 85mm F1.8 with a higher shutter speed?
You need to keep after these presentations. I liked the balance and truth. I love my 90mm. I did not know how good it was until after I had purchased it. Then I saw all of the reviews. When you are using it with A7iii set your ISO to Auto. Then you can concentrate on speed, and the exact amount of Bokeh you want. The low light capability of the body...helps when you are in close. Again..nice work with this video.
One very important thing is the balance of the lens. The 85mm feels heavier than the 90mm because the 85mm is very front heavy and at the same time it is too short to hold in the palm of your hand (like you would hold a long lens). The 90mm is excellent in this aspect and is therefore much more comfortable to use.
I have both. But I don't carry both, as it depends on what I expect to be shooting. I do wish the 90mm Macro didn't have the push/pull AF toggle, as there are times it is inconvenient. I have just recently switched to using the button on the lens to switch between AF & MF, but haven't tried if it works on the 90 Macro.
Was thinking of getting 85. As I don’t get much blur on my 24-70 when I am taking pictures of my baby. After I seen your clip. Will try to use my 90 macro 1st. As it’s used for my macro works.
I have the 85mm *f/1.4* GMaster - but for everything except nighttime environmental portraits I still reach for the 90mm G. The image sharpness is *insane*
While not example apples and oranges (more like oranges and tangerines) the two lenses are quite different and are meant for two different types of shooting....
@Mr. Kattan ive been thinking about getting the 85 1.8 you dont feel like having the 85 and 90 is too similar or do they give a big difference in look?
Hi, I got both. I like the 85 for portraits than the 90macro mainly becoz of its weight. And it’s quick focusing too. The 90macro is mainly for macro shots. Tnx.
The most important things when shooting are sharpness edge to edge, low chromatic aberration, and color rendering. Both seem fine. I was planning on using my 24-105 f4 next time I have to shoot art since it is quite sharp, I have to stop down anyway to make sure everything is in focus, I'd shoot from a distance, and it's versatile. (I don't have the 90mm.)
90mm is better as it is designed to be sharp across the whole picture. autofocus is significantely slower but doesnt matter if you photographing stills and also the etter bokeh of the 85 isnt necessary as you wont play with unsharpness on paintings.
Weather sealing is not the same as putting a rubber gasket along the mount. Most effort in weather sealing is making sure the lens is internally sealed - both from the outside as providing multiple isolated chambers on the inside. Arguably, it is much harder to get a trace of humidity out of the inside of the lens (causing condens, fungus etc), than it is getting it out of the mount, which you can easily open up and let dry.
yeah hes right the 85 gm adn 1.8 there no huge difrent at sharpnest, and u know what i think my 24mm way more sharp than 85 gm, thats why i keep the 85 1.8 . . .
I might add my two pennyworths. The 90mm macro's autofocus in low light is terrible. One would notice it only when using a Sony A7 camera. When I moved to A7iii the AF struggle is eliminated due to the body. But its sharpest lens in the world.
Just got my 90mm i went over and over each of those two lenses but i shoot weddings so i felt like the 90 added extra benefit when it comes to shooting rings and detAILS
if you shoot macro- get the macro- if you never shoot macro get the portrait. Its really simple that simple. The only thing is that the macro also happens to make a very good portrait lens.
if you mostly shot portraits go with the 85 and get extension tubes for the rare need of macro shots. the bokeh is much better on the 85 and it focuses noticable faster than the 90,

I have the Batis 85 1.8, which is very similar to the Sony 1.8 in terms of sharpness etc, but as much as I love the lens I am going to trade it in for the versatility of the 90 macro. There are cheaper macros like the Sigma 70 and the Tokina FiRIN 100 f2.8 but the Sony beats both in reliability of focus and the Sigma is too short. It really does appear to be the best macro available for E mount, and doubles as an excellent portrait lens as far as I can tell.

The reason Sony doesn't put on a little gasket, is that if they did you'd be taking it out in the rain, instantly ruining the lens, because all other joints aren't weather sealed.
